“Let's get back to valuing what a scholarship means instead of devaluing it and saying, 'Hey, I just need some NIL money so I can tell my friends that I'm getting NIL somewhere.’”
Jared Sumsion
Utah Valley AD in an appearance on the Journey Out West podcast

Utah Valley AD Jared Sumsion sat down with the Journey Out West podcast to discuss the university's impending move to the Big West and the financial realities of adding new sports to an institution with 48K students. Key takeaways…
➤ On the financial barrier to starting a collegiate football program: "I've been asked a question twice just this morning about when we're starting football and I tell them we're about $500M to a billion dollars away from starting football and once that's endowed I'm in."
➤ The need for mid-major programs to organize and demand representation alongside the Power 4: "[We] know that we don't have the power but yet there's 300 mid majors and 65 P4 programs and so why aren't we standing up together? College sports is fun because of mid-majors. It's not just the P4s that are running the show and yet that's what's happening right now."
➤ Maintaining the value of a traditional athletic scholarship amid the rise of NIL compensation: "[We] do give out NIL. It's not a lot. It's not to a lot of people, but you come here to compete in the classroom and you come here to compete in competition and in the community and in life. ... Let's get back to valuing what a scholarship means instead of devaluing it and saying, 'Hey, I just need some NIL money so I can tell my friends that I'm getting NIL somewhere.'" (link)
Harvard Kennedy School professor Todd Rogers, Harvard doctoral candidate Audrey Feldman, and Fox Sports EVP Ben Valenta published findings from a series of national surveys of 50,674 Americans examining political diversity across sports fan bases in the New York Times. The research revealed that every MLB, NFL, and top college football fan base remains politically diverse, noting that the NFL's most conservative fan bases (Tennessee Titans and Jacksonville Jaguars) still retain a 1:2 Democrat-to-Republican ratio, while its most progressive fan bases (Los Angeles Chargers and New York Giants) feature the exact inverse. The authors highlighted that 76% of American adults consider themselves sports fans—with two-thirds calling fandom central to their identity—helping drive live sports to account for 96 of the top 100 most-watched television broadcasts last year. In experiments pairing political adversaries, learning a rival supported the same team increased personal warmth as effectively as sharing a religion and significantly increased willingness to interact in real life, emphasizing the role of sports as a rare cross-partisan cultural institution ahead of peak fall programming. North Dakota State collaborated with Under Armour and Athletics Admin to create a custom, one-game collector’s edition uniform worn for yesterday’s Battle of the Basins Trophy match-up against Wyoming, per Mountain West Connection’s Mike Wittman. Preceding and during the game, the jerseys were auctioned to fans, with proceeds supporting NDSU Athletics’ "Climb the Mountain" campaign and the continued transition into the Mountain West. Bison Assoc. AD for Marketing and Fan Engagement Cam Bastian: “Our goal is always to give our fans a unique and ‘different’ game day experience, whether it’s someone’s first time or 1,000th. These jerseys, still rooted in tradition, are unique and a landmark for something special that Bison Nation has been waiting for years — the move to the FBS. It also fulfills one of our other goals, which is to provide new access to our teams and ways to interact with them.” Senior Assoc. AD for External Operations & Strategic Revenue Troy Goergen adds: “Knowing the jerseys are one-of-one and will be auctioned off to support our ‘Climb the Mountain’ campaign adds another layer of excitement and meaning.” (link); Have a look at the jerseys. NJ.com’s Adam Zagoria caught up with Big East Men’s Basketball HCs to get a sense of NIL budgets needed to compete at the top of the sport. As a range, “multiple coaches confirmed the league average is in the $12-15M range, with the top-tier teams spending around $20M or more.” Here are key comments…
➤ UConn’s Danny Hurley: “I look at it like it’s a poker game, there’s a certain amount that you probably need to have to get in the game. Is that number $14M? Is it $18M to get to a Final Four. I mean, I don’t know exactly what that number is, but there’s certainly a going rate at certain positions if you want to be put together an elite roster.”
➤ Georgetown’s Ed Cooley: “What teams were in the Final Four last year? (The answer is UConn, Michigan, Arizona and Illinois) To me, that’s what you gotta spend. I don’t know what anybody else’s household does, I’m concerned about Georgetown and Georgetown only.”
➤ Xavier’s Richard Pitino: “I think 20 is a great number, but I don’t think 365 teams have that number, it’s probably 20-30 or in that range. To me, as it pertains to Xavier, we’re always trying to close that gap as best we can. We’re very grateful for the support that we get, but you got to be aggressive. And I’m a Yankee fan, I love the Yankees. There’s a reason why they win. They invest.” (link)

Houston Asst. AD of Facilities & Event Management Operations Reid Johnson visited with College.town’s Kristen Eargle to discuss his career progression, helping launch Texas A&M-Texarkana's (DII) football program, key leadership principles in athletic administration and more. Here are some takeaways…
➤ Building the framework for Texas A&M-Texarkana's new football program: "Really drafted out about a 10-page [strategic] plan where I outlined all the different pieces. ... I knew exactly how much it was going to cost to start the program, and I was able to go line-by-line, which was really important to the president and the CFO. ... I built out the financial pieces, basically built out a profile for what I thought the ideal HC would be ... [and] built out that whole timeline."
➤ Evaluating leadership opportunities and institutional alignment: "When I assessed this opportunity at Houston, one of the biggest things I was looking for was some sense of balance. Was the city going to be a good fit for me? How was the leadership? Was there experience with my boss and with the athletic director, the president? And then I think resources. Resources are absolutely critical. ... Does the school have appropriate resources for the level that they’re at? … Is there appropriate staffing, funding, timeline, expectations for me to have some success when I plug into a new role?"
➤ On the necessity of organizational systems in athletic operations: "It's so important to stay organized. ... I think I’ve worked with six different football programs now. The ones that were organized succeeded, and the ones that weren't really struggled. ... I strongly believe that translates to the product you put on the field. It's hard to be disorganized in your office or your mind and then go have success on game day." (link)
South Carolina hired Matt Pepin as the first baseball general manager in the SEC, establishing a front-office model to manage player valuations in the rev-share era, according to Gamecock247's John Whittle. Arriving from Coastal Carolina, where he led the analytics department, Pepin has since expanded the Gamecocks' student analytics staff from five to 12 members and collaborated with former Wake Forest AC/current Gamecocks AHC Bill Cilento to process over 9M rows of pitch data for roster construction. Pepin explains how financial shifts in college athletics necessitated a quantitative valuation process to manage multi-million dollar roster budgets: "With the way college baseball is going, especially in the SEC with finances, you need someone to manage that money and the information behind the money. My job is not only placing value to players and talking to agents, players and our staff – how do we value them, but also how do we figure out a player's worth in the future. I've built models, used data and analytics to take what the coaches are saying, and really put a price towards it." Full profile. (link)
Ohio State's recent $100M settlement with 279 victims of former sports medicine doctor Richard Strauss could trigger millions of dollars in additional payments to a prior class of survivors, according to Sportico's Daniel Libit. A special master will now determine how to divide the latest agreement among those plaintiffs. If distributed equally, it would come to approximately $358K per claimant, and Libit points out “that adds up to a substantially higher figure than the roughly $61M Ohio State paid out to 317 earlier plaintiffs between March 2020 and February 2026.” The university established a $252,551 average recovery benchmark in a 2020 master services agreement with 152 of those prior claimants, agreeing to engage a mediator to determine additional compensation if future global settlements surpassed that per-claimant threshold. Libit notes that the original figure adjusts to roughly $323K today when accounting for inflation, adding: “It is unclear how many claimants would qualify for an adjustment, as the specific amounts paid to each have not been publicly disclosed. An Ohio State spokesperson declined to comment, citing the confidentiality requirements of an ongoing mediation process.” (link)

Leadership from Florida State, Miami (FL), Clemson, and North Carolina sent a joint letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson, Majority Leader Steve Scalise, and Majority Whip Tom Emmer requesting key changes to the Protect College Sports Act, according to Tomahawk Nation's Jon Loesche. Obtained via a FOIA request, the document reveals that while the coalition supports the overarching bill, it is seeking two specific adjustments: raising the power conference membership cap from 20 to 22 institutions and removing the three-year independence requirement for schools transferring between covered leagues. The four institutions argue that forced independence imposes an unnecessary penalty on departing programs that have already negotiated exit fees with their former conferences, coming after Florida Senators Ashley Moody and Rick Scott previously opposed procedural votes over realignment restrictions. The coalition outlines its stance on modifying institutional transfer rules: "The three-year independence requirement would impose a significant additional consequence on an institution seeking to change conferences, particularly when conferences and their members have already negotiated the financial terms surrounding an exit." Expanded postseason formats across American sports are manufacturing television inventory by prioritizing late-season relevance over competitive excellence, according to The Athletic's Jason Lloyd. The trend spans every major league, with the NFL expanding its playoff field to 14 teams, the NBA involving 20 franchises via the play-in tournament, MLB admitting 12 teams—including the 81-81 Houston Astros securing a division title—and the College Football Playoff jumping to 12. While the inaugural 12-team CFP produced lopsided first-round results, Lloyd notes the underlying business strategy relies on keeping up to 25 programs in contention deep into November to drive viewership and ticket sales. Here’s more…
➤ Ohio State AD Ross Bjork sees it like this: "Nobody can argue this. What’s wrong with more high-level football? What’s wrong with more postseason content? What’s wrong with keeping the postseason alive for as many teams as possible?"
➤ Lloyd consequently concludes: “We can ask why a 10th-place NBA team still has a heartbeat, or whether the 12th-best college football team has any business playing for a championship. But ‘deserve’ is fading from the conversation. The leagues found something more profitable than rewarding greatness. They learned how to sell possibility. A great team can captivate a city. Hope can hold 20 of them hostage and make every one of them grateful for it.” (link)
Fox has removed Barstool Sports personality Dave Portnoy and his colleagues from its Big Noon Kickoff college football pregame show, according to The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand. Portnoy claimed Ohio State and head coach Ryan Day pressed Fox executives to drop him after OSU threatened to pull talent access, though university officials referred all comments to Fox, which declined to comment. While Fox had brought on Portnoy and Dan "Big Cat" Katz a year ago to rival ESPN’s Pat McAfee, sources cited the ongoing friction of pairing Barstool’s aggressive persona with Fox's traditional broadcast desk—led by Urban Meyer, Matt Leinart, Brady Quinn, Mark Ingram II, and Rob Stone—as unsustainable. Portnoy: "Ohio State has relentlessly complained to Fox... The juice wasn’t worth the squeeze." (link)
Miami (OH) was prepared to spend roughly $30M to move to the American, according to Extra Points publisher Matt Brown, who notes: “Miami is different from most other MAC schools. While some of its conference peers struggle with declining enrollment, lackluster fan support and declining local economies, Miami has always reached a different audience. When I was growing up in Ohio, the school had a reputation as ‘J Crew U,’ the public university home for the affluent who wanted a more academically elite experience. The school’s donor profile (more national, more corporate) really does have more in common with many ACC or other power league schools than it does with half of the MAC.” Brown goes on to report the newly rebranded Metro Conference is targeting NEC members Stonehill and Le Moyne to fortify its membership inventory against potential DI reclassification withdrawals. Brown adds: “Beyond the Northeast, I’m told conversations between leagues and new members are happening from the Midwest to the Great Plains, West Coast and beyond.” (link)

While Miami (FL) Football student-athlete Darian Mensah’s multimillion-dollar settlement with Duke served as one of the first real tests of whether a college football player contract could hold up, On3’s Pete Nakos opines it certainly won’t be the last as Power 4 GMs, administrators and agents report buyout clauses and exit penalties are becoming standard practice to deter early departures. Here’s what you need to know…
➤ An SEC front office operator: “Half the people think the buyouts aren’t legally enforceable. The other half don’t report them. The other half fight them. If you really need a player bad enough, you’re not going to let a buyout hold you back. … The buyouts have some teeth, but do they stop a guy from leaving you? No.”
➤ While the transfer portal doesn’t officially open until January, programs expect roster retention negotiations to begin within the next two-to-four weeks. Per Nakos, the Big Ten remains the only conference that has a revenue-sharing contract template used across the league. The SEC still operates without one, which has brought its share of pluses and minuses.
➤ Another SEC administrator: “Right now, I can put really strong language in, but they’re just gonna be like, ‘I’m not going to sign that.’ They will say, ‘This other school wouldn’t do that.’ But if I can get an SEC contract, I can say, ‘Hey, man, my hands are tied. This is the contract everybody in our league uses is what I have to go with.'” (link)
North Dakota State’s unbeaten start to the 2026 football campaign in its initial year playing at the FBS level has resulted in the national exposure the school desired. However, that visibility can cut both ways, per ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura, who notes “NDSU's dynasty was built around finding players bigger programs missed and developing them. … That model is harder to sustain now. NDSU's best players will have more exposure against FBS competition, they can transfer without sitting out and staying in Fargo could mean turning down significant money elsewhere once they prove themselves.” And the better North Dakota State performs overall, the more complicated that issue could become. Bison Football HC Tim Polasek: “Unfortunately now the college game is about who can win the race to maturity year by year and who can win the race to maturity the fastest. Where we used to just be -- we still are -- we used to just be an engine of development ... and that's being challenged daily in college athletics." Bonagura adds: “NDSU outgrew the FCS. Now it is time to find out if the model that got it there can evolve fast enough to keep pace with an ever-changing FBS.” (link)
North Carolina Football HC Bill Belichick prematurely signed a liability waiver alongside his five-year, $50M contract that could limit his legal recourse if fired, according to Sportico’s Daniel Libit. While the first three years of the deal are fully guaranteed—requiring UNC to pay roughly $20M if terminated without cause before December 31, 2027—the executed release form waives claims against the university upon termination. Heels Senior Director of Communications Kevin Best noted that coaches are not intended to sign the form at hiring, stating: "Though coaches are generally instructed that Exhibit A is not supposed to be signed at the time of their hiring, it sometimes is inadvertently signed at that time." Most of Belichick’s staff also signed the waiver. (link)
Arizona State has retained former Arizona Supreme Court Chief Justice Scott Bales to lead an independent investigation into the Men’s Hockey team workout that left 21-year-old sophomore student-athlete Matthew Mayich hospitalized on life support with nonresponsive exertional heat stroke, according to The Athletic’s Katie Strang, Nathan Fenno, and Adam Kilgore. Also of note: “According to the school’s release, Bales also is expected to make recommendations on planning, staffing and response relating to outdoor athletic activities, as well as the “use of outside consultants in the planning and delivery of strength and conditioning and practice activities.” The independent review is expected to conclude by December. The 2026 MAC Women’s Soccer Championship will be conducted at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field, home of the MLS’s Columbus Crew, following its relocation from Historic Crew Stadium due to scheduled turf maintenance. This will mark the second consecutive year the event has been held at a neutral site. (link)
The Summit League is teaming up with Athletics Admin to “better understand the league’s current use of AI, identify opportunities to enhance existing workflows and develop thoughtful strategies for using emerging technology to support its staff and member institutions.” (link)
Georgia Tech has received a $500K gift commitment from the Shoob family to support the Full Steam Ahead initiative. (link)
Fairfield expanded its partnership with Yale New Haven Health, naming the healthcare provider its official jersey patch sponsor in a deal brokered by Van Wagner. The logo will feature on home and away uniforms across seven Stags programs—basketball, lacrosse, soccer, volleyball, baseball, softball and field hockey. (link)
UC Irvine is enhancing its broadcast set-up and launching international streaming access for select home events, beginning this year. The expansion builds upon UCI's existing ESPN+ broadcast operation and extends the department's live-event coverage to audiences across the globe. International distribution will vary by location, with fans throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, Canada and other eligible territories able to watch participating events live and on demand through BigWest.org/Watch. Latin America and the Caribbean will continue to receive coverage through Disney+ International, while domestic U.S. broadcasts remain exclusively available through ESPN+. Fans can access broadcasts through annual $$129.99), monthly ($12.99) or 24-hour ($6.99) subscription plans. (link)
