“In the city of Memphis, there are three pillars that keep the city up and running: St. Jude [Children’s Hospital], FedEx, and the University of Memphis. Those three things mean more to this city than most of the other schools that I just described.”

Memphis AD on the Tigers “impact to market” compared to other schools also mentioned as P4 expansion candidates

The 30-day exclusive negotiating window ended on Friday, but the College Football Playoff yesterday said it would “continue to have ongoing discussions with ESPN” regarding the media rights for a potential 24-team playoff. From the CFP: “The dialogue throughout the window has been constructive, and we will carry these conversations forward with ESPN as we determine the path ahead.” ESPN’s Heather Dinich explains that unraveling the contracts for those conference championship games and determining their value has been a part of the negotiations (potentially $200M in value), as has determining the value of the additional games in an expanded field. Missouri Valley Conference/Missouri Valley Football Conference Commissioner Jeff Jackson covers several topics during an appearance on the WakeUpCall podcast…

➤ On managing athletic department departures within the conference ecosystem: "When presidents or chancellors tell me that they're having those conversations or they're genuinely thinking about it, I really don't begrudge them because those are decisions that they're making as presidents and chancellors with the support and the advice of their boards and things of that nature."

➤ The regional identity and community importance of Missouri Valley Conference member institutions: "We're geographically sensible... everybody bumps up to that state, we're not all over the place, but there's no doubt it's one of the stronger conferences right now in the non-Power Five space... All of our schools are extremely important to their community. Not just in terms of the athletics, but just the overall fabric of what that community is."

➤ Expanding the NCAA Tournament to 76 teams: "We’re certainly in favor of this. We know Indiana State two or three years ago is in the tournament if it's 76 teams. We know Belmont last year has every chance to be in the tournament if it's 76 teams. So for us, with the expectation that the same model of evaluation is going to be in play, we feel really confident that we're going to have teams that are going to be able to take advantage themselves of the fact that the tournament is expanding from 68 to 76 teams." (link)

Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey in the news once again with interesting comments to host Jay Tust on The Jeremiah Dickey Show…

➤ On exploring drastic structural reform options: "Someone tell me why wouldn't promotion/relegation work? … Outside of ego, outside of people being grandfathered in, outside of the history and tradition of some of these institutions, why couldn't it work? Why couldn't we create a structure where we have unity from the top? Maybe it lives in the CFP. ... My biggest fear is 10 years from now ... that we look back and say shoulda, coulda, woulda. Right now we're looking back and saying, shoulda, coulda, woulda. How do we stop that mentality? How do we define expectations and how do we create something that can live beyond us and truly represent something bigger than ourselves and the impacts that we're having?"

➤ Legislative momentum for the Protect College Sports Act: "I think we had 77 votes on that and that's awesome. You think about how far we’ve come. We keep making progress. Sometimes it's inches at a time, but those inches add up. ... My assumption is it's going to be, and we're being told [the House vote’s] going to be after the midterms, which makes sense. I would expect to have something hopefully by the end of this year. Then the question is, when is it implemented? ... I think this gives us a foundation to build off of." (link)

More from Memphis AD Dr. Ed Scott on the Bill Rhoden on Sports podcast…

➤ Supporting the "Lane Kiffin rule" in the PCSA to restrict in-season coaching departures: "It prevents coaches from leaving during the season. I actually like that because last year it happened to us. [Former HC Ryan Silverfield] had a wonderful opportunity to upgrade for himself and his family to go to Arkansas, but he left us before the bowl game and that put us in a really tough spot.”

➤ Managing a growing $100M budget at Memphis while operating with less institutional subsidy than Power 4 peers: "When I got here, we had a $67M budget. I've been able to grow that with an awesome team over the last two years to about $100M. ... We produce $78M of that $100M. We get a subsidy from the institution, about $22M. Of that $22M, we have to give back to the university over $10M in scholarships. So when you look at it, really, we're producing an inordinate amount of revenue that most of the Power 4’s on a percentage basis do not have to produce."

➤ Pushing back against market size criticisms in conference realignment evaluations: "When people say, 'Well, the market isn't big enough. South Florida has a bigger market in Tampa.' They do. 'Houston, the University of Houston is in a bigger market than Memphis.' Yes, I can’t deny that. ... Here's what people aren't talking about. … It's what I would call impact to market. The University of Houston does not mean to the city of Houston nearly as much as the University of Memphis means to the city of Memphis. ... In the city of Memphis, there are three pillars that keep the city up and running: St. Jude [Children’s Hospital], FedEx, and the University of Memphis. Those three things mean more to this city than most of the other schools that I just described." (link)

Cal State Northridge AD Ryan Swartwood sat down for a Q&A on the Journey Out West podcast to discuss his return to the university, elevating the CSUN brand in a crowded California market and more. Here’s what you need to know…

➤ Utilizing local demographics to differentiate the athletic department: "We're a Hispanic-serving institution and we're a Black-serving institution as well, which we're very proud of. … Just in the San Fernando Valley, which is where we're located on campus... there's, I believe, about 2M residents. ... We think focusing on the San Fernando Valley is an area of strength for us as we set ourselves apart in what is definitely a busy and crowded SoCal market."

➤ On the unique elements of the university's branding: "I think being the Matadors is a unique mascot. And then I think also we're the only school in the Big West Conference with the color red as well. ... [We] have a beautiful Matador statue in the heart of our campus right by the library. And that statue gets involved in a lot of campus traditions. After students graduate, they'll place a rose on the Matador statue." (link)

Colorado State professor Kyle Saunders has mapped out where more than 1,550 universities stand comparatively based on institutional resilience, post-college market position and artificial intelligence exposure. Institutional resilience is based on the question: “Can this institution absorb financial and enrollment shocks?” Meanwhile, the post-college market position is based on the question: “How well does this institution position graduates for the labor market ahead?” The data has now been refreshed with the latest IPEDS and College Scorecard releases, and the enrollment trend now covers 2019-20 to 2024-25. See where your institution stands, both on its own and relative to others. (link)

College.town has compiled a list of the FBS football intro videos for this season, analyzing their similarities and differences. Common threads: voiceovers + radio calls; city /region are the heroes; history, legacy and anniversaries; storms, lighting and fire; mascots and logos; traditions still carry the moment. Texas Tech has the shortest run time (0:47) while East Carolina has the longest (2:26), with the average run time at 1:19. Watch the 32 we’ve collected, and if yours is missing, send it our way. North Texas Deputy AD for Revenue Generation/CRO Charley Thrash highlights the athletic department's fundraising momentum across its capital projects, NIL initiatives, and annual events during an appearance on The Greenprint podcast. Key notes…

➤ Athletic center expansion: "Phase 2 is going to be just as important as Phase 1. Brand new academic center. ... It'll be unbelievable what we can do from a recovery standpoint once we get that square footage. I think it almost triples in size within the sports medicine [area]. And then our football locker room … we haven't touched that space since the building was built … over 20 years."

➤ Capitalizing on community support to establish a distinct home-field advantage: "If we could just continue to mobilize our alumni base, like we can really do some special things. ... There's going to be a day where we all talk about South Florida, the crowd at South Florida, and eventually I want us to – it'll be fun when that's the norm and we’re not going ‘we’ve got to be like that game against South Florida’. That’s just the norm. And I think our fans with what we're doing as a department and where we're continuing to go, that will be the norm." (link)

TD Garden and parent company Delaware North unveiled the first phase of a $100M hospitality transformation ahead of the Boston Bruins' 2026-27 home opener on Sept. 29. The two-year arena renovation encompasses all 83 Boston Garden Society Suites—with the initial 24 redesigned spaces featuring culinary programs from Patina Group—ahead of a planned 2027 event-level club makeover in partnership with the Boston Celtics and Rockwell Group. TD Garden President and Bruins EVP/COO Glen Thornborough: "The debut of our newly transformed suites marks the first visible milestone in TD Garden’s $100M investment and offers a glimpse of the next generation of premium experiences still to come, including our Level 3 event-level clubs. As one of the industry’s leading sports and entertainment venues, we remain focused on setting new standards through innovative amenities, elevated culinary offerings and exceptional fan experiences that continue to raise the bar – and this season is no exception." A rep for Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) released a statement to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger in connection to North Carolina, Clemson, Florida State & Miami (FL) pushing to change the conference expansion language in the Protect College Sports Act: “This is a binary choice for these schools: they can’t have it both ways. They expect everyone else to bend but they refuse to budge, even after concessions have already been made on this section to appease them. Compromise is not a one-way street. We hope these four schools stop prioritizing their own selfish, unrealistic desires at the expense of student athletes as there’s no ‘I’ in team.” (link)

In a much longer entry on potential high-profile football head coaching changes, ESPN’s Pete Thamel had this to say about Florida State’s open AD chair: “... the industry expectation was for a quick AD search and then a decision on (Mike) Norvell by the end of the year. But as of now, Florida State hasn't been seriously engaged with any major search firms and there's an expectation that board chairman Peter Collins, whose tenure has coincided with FSU falling into a crater, will try to handle all the high-leverage decisions with university president Richard McCullough. … With boosters always having a big voice and campus leadership hovering, the question at FSU has long been simple: How much power will the AD really have?” Thamel goes on to note the Seminoles football roster spending “is at least $15M behind Miami’s.” (link)

CollegeAD reports Iowa State held virtual interviews over the past two days with AD candidates. The process is expected to narrow to three finalists for in-person conversations next week. (link)

Michigan State AD Dan Bartholomae spoke with The State News about several topics, including defining Spartan Ventures, managing long-term donor commitments, overhauling the gameday experience at Spartan Stadium and more. D1.takeaways…

➤ On the need for clearer communication regarding Spartan Ventures: "We have not done a good enough job explaining what Spartan Ventures is, explaining what it isn't and then letting everybody get on board with it so that they can explain it. … As I've sort of assessed where the challenges are here, I've put them into three buckets: transparency, consistency and competitiveness. The Spartan Ventures piece fits into the transparency bucket."

➤ Plans to upgrade Spartan Stadium: "What I'd like to see for the stadium is a complete renovation of that east side. Really some more innovative thinking as it relates to premium products. I think we've got a fan base here that likes those products, and frankly, we've got a stadium that we need to energize a little bit."

➤ On the broader impact of student engagement on ticket sales and campus retention: "I think our fans get energized by the students. I think we sell more tickets if the students are having fun. I think we have more students and we retain more students on this campus if the students are having fun. … The fan experience is going to get built around the students for sure.” (link, link)

Power Four programs have won 73 of 76 matchups against Group of Six opponents this season—including 27 victories by 35 points or more and 10 shutouts—highlighting a widening competitive divide driven by NIL, revenue sharing, and roster poaching, according to Yahoo Sports' Dan Wolken. Unfettered transfer portal movement, Wolken contends, has effectively turned non-power schools into a developmental farm system, while Power Four programs are increasingly trimming non-conference slates and avoiding elite Group of Six contenders like UNLV and Boise State to minimize postseason risks. Although upsets still yield substantial institutional value—such as UMass generating $40M in publicity value from a Week 1 win over Rutgers, per Minutemen AD Ryan Bamford—non-power athletic departments face a structural financial disadvantage when attempting to retain top players against power-conference payrolls. Bamford: "The power conference schools are paying backups what we're paying starters. That's a reality. Anytime you've got guys that are all-league or putting stuff on tape consistently week in and week out, anyone who's saying that isn't in the back of their mind isn't being truthful. … It's only going to get harder because the talent disparity is so great." (link)

Meanwhile, over the past three seasons, Power 4 college football teams are 169-0 against the FCS, leading The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman to question if such games are still worth it. While P4 teams defeated FCS opponents by an average score of 48.6-13.3 during the 2018 season, that margin has now widened in 2026 to an average of 53.5-7.2. MVC Commissioner Jeff Jackson: “Is there possibly a little bit more of a chasm when you’re looking at those really top programs in the (Power 4)? Yeah, I wouldn’t push back too hard on that. But when you start talking about scores, you’ve got to remember these schools are being self-selective in terms of who they play and why they play them. So, I would look at some of those scores with a grain of salt.” Northern Iowa AD Megan Franklin says the positives come from playing in front of a massive crowd: "It’s a way in which you find the opportunity from it. You can tell that’s our point of view on it. It’s the reality we live in, and, no, our revenues are not nearly the same. It’s a revenue source that we’ve long been doing." (link)

The Athletic’s Mitch Sherman examines how Nebraska became the epicenter for Fox’s initial football-volleyball, over-the-air doubleheader from the same campus, with Indiana-Nebraska football set for today’s Noon ET window and Wisconsin-Nebraska volleyball slated to follow later at 7 p.m. ET. The network reportedly tabbed the volleyball match, featuring two of the nation’s top teams, for broadcast back in early August, while the Huskers’ September football success, paired with a match-up against the defending national champion Hoosiers, helped Fox make the event a reality. Fox Sports SVP for College Sports Derek Crocker: “We see volleyball in a growth trajectory, something that we saw a few years ago with women’s basketball. We want to help the sport grow. We think there’s a lot of momentum behind it right now. And the conferences we cover, especially the Big Ten, are leading in terms of driving that growth. … It’s a unique day. When we were planning it out, we saw this could be a great opportunity. And it came to fruition.” (link)

More from Lincoln with Nebraska’s Memorial Stadium slated to undergo its “Big Red Rebuild” by the 2028 season, the university is selling facility pieces that fans can purchase after the football team’s home slate ends in late November. Notable details…

➤ Stainless steel water fountain troughs for $2,500 and even urinal troughs for $3K as the school makes way for new ones. Per The Athletic’s Larry Holder, the BuyGBR sales page notes the 72- to 96-inch-long, 300-pound troughs are original to the 103-year-old stadium, but have been cleaned.

➤ Rare Goods Co-Founder Joe DiPietro, the company assisting NU with the sales campaign, said that seven of the 30 total urinals had been sold as of this past Monday. With a limited supply of urinals remaining, several variations of stadium restroom signs have sold out already with DiPietro saying signage — not just for bathrooms — has been selling out within minutes of each batch going up for sale.

➤ Different items hit the site in waves by design and whether it’s an item such as an ‘N’-logoed cabinet door pull, a urinal, an overhead section sign or a “credential checkpoint ahead” gate, all items will receive a certificate of authenticity from the university stating where each item was located within Memorial Stadium. The most popular items have been the stadium seats ($25), because fans can look up and claim the actual spot they sat in, while benches built from the facility’s reclaimed wood ($429) have also been in-demand. (link)

“Based on the information that was brought to me, I made the only decision I felt that could be made at the time.” That’s Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal in regards to his decision to part ways with Volleyball HC Tony Graystone last month. Here’s more…

➤ At the center of Graystone's firing is an Aug. 10 practice during which he threw a volleyball at a student-athlete. For his part, Graystone says the team was participating in a drill in which coaches spiked balls at players and one player in particular made a comment that Graystone says was “egging me on.”

➤ Graystone says there is video from that same practice of Graystone apologizing to the player, “And her first reaction was, 'What are you talking about?’ She hadn't, didn't even remember it, and I reminded her what happened. And she was, 'Oh, yeah. That? Don't worry about it.' And we didn’t. We forgot about it. It was never brought up again. … until Sept. 13."

➤ An additional allegation about racial comments surfaced in early September and an email to Hocutt referenced medical malpractice and felony battery. Volleyball team parents who spoke to USA Today: “This was not battery. This was not. This was hard coaching, perhaps. Will Tony tell you he shouldn’t have thrown the ball? Probably, yes.” (link)

Huddle Up publisher Joe Pompliano unpacks Cal’s football field naming rights deal with Databricks that is worth up to $22.8M over 10 years, noting the agreement includes a mix of cash and company equity alongside field naming rights, helmet decals, premium hospitality, venue LED signage, and enterprise technology integrations for analytics and scouting. For Databricks, an enterprise software company founded on Cal's campus that now has over $7B in annualized revenue, the $2.28M annual commitment represents less than 0.1% of its income and functions as a pre-IPO marketing engine, regional recruitment tool, and client hospitality venue rather than a direct customer acquisition funnel. For the Bears, Pompliano explains: "Unlike its crypto deal with FTX, Cal won’t be worried about the equity it received disappearing overnight because Databricks is a legitimate company with billions in annual revenue and a market cap that will soon exceed $200B. Cal could always sell its shares through a secondary transaction if the Databricks IPO gets delayed, but if the company does follow through on its projected timing, it’s also easy to see a world where the equity is worth more next year than it is today." Baseball/softball analytics and scouting company Rule42 is acquiring college baseball/softball transfer portal data platform 64 Analytics for an undisclosed sum. Per SBJ’s Rob Schaefer, the deal, negotiated directly between the two entities, integrates 64 Analytics' real-time player database, performance metrics and transfer portal tracking into Rule42’s tech stack, which recently expanded via an acquisition of Softball America and an AUSL investment. As part of the transaction, 64 Analytics Founder Jason Ratcliff will join Rule42 as Director of Amateur Baseball Analytics. Rule42 EVP for Baseball Jed Lowrie: "When I’ve talked to people in the college coaching industry, there are random assistants being assigned the ‘GM’ role now — the idea being that they’re getting time taken away from them actually coaching. Outside of the Power Four conferences, they don’t have the budget to go and hire somebody else to do this. But they still have to manage NIL, they still have to manage the transfer portal. [64 Analytics] is the tool that helps those teams stay competitive." (link)

Ohio expands its partnership with Athens-based and alumni-founded Jackie O's Brewery through the joint release of Rufus, a craft beer named in honor of the Bobcat mascot. The arrangement is managed through Learfield’s Ohio Sports Properties and Collegiate Licensing Company. (link)

The NFL has filed an amicus brief before the Supreme Court in support of New Jersey regulators, arguing that sports prediction markets constitute gambling rather than financial swaps and should remain regulated by individual states rather than exclusively by the CFTC. In the filing, the league noted football accounted for more than half of the total [$1.8B] prediction trading volume on the initial Sunday of the 2026 season, while raising concerns over prop-style contracts susceptible to insider manipulation and Kalshi’s 18-year-old minimum age limit instead of the state-mandated minimum age of 21 for bettors. While leagues such as the NHL, MLB, MLS and UFC have all secured various commercial partnerships with Kalshi and Polymarket, the NBA, PGA Tour and NFL haven’t, with the latter maintaining an advertising ban on such prediction platforms. Federal appeals courts have thus far issued split decisions over whether states can enforce their gambling laws and supersede CFTC federal regulation. (link, link)
