Coming soon: Campbell, Jackson State, Michigan and UAB. Just $349 for an entire year of access to all dossiers. (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger indicates the SEC plans to comply with the state court order in Louisiana that would allow former pro players to return to the college gridiron & hardwood. More Dellenger: “However, it does not end litigation or necessarily mean the league won't in the future impose penalties through other legal mechanisms, such as a suit in federal court, or if the SEC wins in trial.” (link)

Meanwhile, Colorado AD Fernando Lovo: “We trust our commissioner and we have great legal counsel at the conference that really kind of thinks through all these different situations and scenarios. We’re hopeful that it is (enforceable). I guess what we’ve learned in this world is you can never say never. You never really know what could be coming around the corner. But we were very intentional about the way in which we discussed the rule. We never intended it to be more punitive than the NCAA would be. This is to supplement, to provide another level, another layer, of protection. We feel pretty good that it will be enforceable.” (link)

Troy AD Kyle George discussed the school’s new $2.1M Troy Bank & Trust jersey patch deal with The Messenger’s Josh Boutwell. Key takeaways…

George referenced the lucrative jersey patch sponsorship deal, a rarity among Group of Six programs, as “huge” for the Trojans in college sports’ new NIL/rev-share era. “They have been a great partner for us, not only Troy Athletics but Troy University at large, for years. We’ve both grown here in Troy and beyond. I think this is great to have the right partner on our jerseys and it further strengthens the entire community of Troy in taking them everywhere we go.”

With jersey patch deals becoming more prevalent in college athletics, gaudy patches that some programs don can become an eye sore. That’s a fact not lost on either George or Troy Bank & Trust. “Any time you do something like this, you want to make sure you do it right. There’s a lot of history with our jerseys and you have to make sure you respect that. We like to be different at times with our jerseys and how we show the different uniform combos but our color scheme remains the same. … I think Troy Bank & Trust was great to work with us in knowing that we want it to be a part of the jersey but not be an eyesore. We needed it to blend together and be the right components that make it a win for everybody.” (link)

Chicago State relaunched its football program yesterday & VP/AD Dr. Monique Carroll recently joined College.town's Anthony Grassi to discuss the university's transition into FCS football, the NEC and more. Here are some takeaways…

On shifting institutional culture and overcoming independent status: "What I inherited was a program where standards had been set over the years, but it just needed a little shock, a little AED to the program to just revive it. ... When I came in, we were independent, a culture of 'you're not competing for championships, what are you doing day-in, day-out?' ... I think the thing I'm most proud of, [with] almost completing four years, is the culture that we built, the coaches I've been able to hire, the staff I've been able to retain because they're great. … I showed them we can't make excuses. We have to figure this out."

As for donor support and facility updates ahead of launching FCS football: "Our donors showed up big for football. We would not have football if our donors, alumni, external stakeholders and corporations did not provide the funding. We have a variety of projects that are going on facility-wise on campus that we're managing. I'm getting updates every day. We have a weight room renovation that should be ready [soon]. It’s projects, just getting them to completion.”

Benefits of joining the NEC: "If I could sum it in one word, I would say stability. … Now we can talk about Commissioner Cup points. We can talk about championships every day, where [previously] that just wasn't the reality. We had a couple of sports that were in leagues as affiliate members, but the majority of the student-athletes weren't. I think it's brought stability to the coaching staff because they know they can compete for a championship.” (link)

Purdue AD Tommy McClelland goes over his initial priorities in a sitdown with the Big Ten Network, including his evaluation process across the major revenue sports, how he plans to protect the university's core educational mission and more. Here’s what he had to say…

Evaluating Football HC Barry Odom entering his second season: "They begin to make progress in year two. Last year with him coming in and you look at it and roster turnover that happened, they were competitive in many of the games, even the games that didn't go our way. I think you see a step forward this year. ... He's a proven coach and he's coaching in a major league like the Big Ten and has found a way to be successful. I think that if we come alongside him, partner with him and give him the resources needed, we're going to see Barry Odom be very successful."

On elevating women’s hoops: "They're optimistic this year. They feel like they've got some transfers and a few international students that can come in and really help lift this program to success. ... I look forward to working with coach on how do we build that program back and how do we get Mackey [Arena]  to a place where we can continue to have that cutting edge as it relates to women's basketball? This is a league that's really, really talented in women's basketball. And we know that Purdue should be at the top of that list."

As for separating the educational mission: "The things we need [are] core versus noncore. The core things are academic learning and athletic development and lifetime leadership. Then you have the peripheral things that are the deliverables towards the core. Those peripheral things are your scholarship or NIL revenue share, the transfer portal, uniforms, logos, music. ... But the one thing that cannot change is when a student-athlete comes to Purdue, we're going to make sure they have a world-class education from an incredible institution." (link)

In another edition of CBS Sports’ Candid Coaches feature, Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander surveyed nearly 100 Division I men’s basketball coaches to gather feedback on what effects they believe the newly expanded 76-team NCAA Tournament will have on coaching job security. Of those polled, 44% felt there would be less job security as a result, 37% responded there would be about the same amount and 19% believed there would actually be more. Notable anonymous quotes…

“If you don't make the field, you are very likely out. And if you make the field but get beat … you likely get fired too. Making it isn't enough for many programs and not making it is a death knell."

“Logically if you open the field up to MORE teams, then ADs should/would expect to be in the field more. On the contrary, if teams are spending all the money on players, is there enough to buy someone out? Who knows? But my guess says less security."

"We could probably name several coaches who would still have their jobs today if the field had been 76 teams instead of 68. A lot of coaches have been on the wrong side of the bubble, and those seasons are viewed very differently than a tournament appearance. Expanding the field lowers that threshold just enough that more coaches will benefit."

"I think it will be a similar level of job security. People will adjust to the new number quickly and making the tournament will still feel as good and being on the bubble will still feel shaky."

Many of the coaches who felt job security moving forward will be shakier, as opposed to more secure, also believe revenue-sharing and NIL will serve as a major factor. An anonymous coach: “I think there will be less job security -- especially now that revenue sharing is in full swing. I have a coaching friend at a prominent mid-major program. He told me that before a big game last February, the chancellor of the school came into the coaches' locker room and said to the entire staff, 'I did my job. Now it's time for you to do yours.' There will be more pressure and more expectations from administrators and boosters as investment dollars continue to rise." More. (link)

East Texas A&M AD Jim Curry joined the Inside Lion Athletics podcast to discuss the changing landscape of college athletics, ongoing and future facility upgrades and more. Notably on executing facility master planning with HOK for an indoor training facility and Memorial Stadium renovations: "We've signed a services contract with HOK. They have done some of the biggest college football programs in the country. The most recent program they did was the Denver Broncos training facility. So, it's nice to have them on board to look at how we can program this space. They're going to be in here next week to start the mapping exercise of the building and then we'll start the programming phase from there. ... We've talked about this idea where the field house turns into an indoor training facility with indoor turf and becomes the home of football as well as our other sports." (link)

Michigan has agreed to pay a total of $1.2M to settle allegations brought by a woman who accused former Wolverines Football GA LaTroy Lewis of rape. Per the Detroit Free Press’ Dave Boucher, news of the deal comes the same week Ann Arbor police confirmed they closed the case without asking prosecutors to bring criminal charges in the alleged 2024 sexual assault. Settlement details outline that U-M agreed to pay the woman $848K and her representation another $352K in order to release any claims against the school. While the woman’s attorney, Karen Truszkowski, said she couldn’t comment on the agreement due to its terms, she did say "there is not a correlation" between the settlement and the end of the city’s police investigation. The woman named in the settlement has the same name as a woman who obtained a personal protection order against Lewis earlier this year and in a 2025 police report indicating the woman and Lewis were in a romantic relationship. Both sides agreed to a confidentiality clause, indicating they won't discuss the specific details of the settlement and have agreed not to go public to disparage each other. (link

The NCAA sent a memo to members yesterday evening with a schedule of notable upcoming multi-plaintiff hearings. Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter notes: “184 college athletes currently are entitled to a 5th season of D1 competition as a result of TROs/lawsuits granted in 5 in 5 lawsuits. 76% of those athletes are men’s basketball players (96) and football players (45).” (link)

College Football Playoff executives are “continuing discussion on implementing participation rules that would disqualify programs rostering certain athletes, including former professional football players,” per Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, who adds: “A meeting next week is expected to solidify a decision.” (link)

CBS’ Jon Rothstein with an update on the Big East’s position: “After two days of meeting with its member institutions, the Big East continues to work towards a more comprehensive policy for its eligibility protocols. Discussions will continue as the league inches closer to the start of the 2026-27 season.” (link)

Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey says the Broncos won’t add any “former student-athletes who participated in the NFL (camps, signed contracts, etc) and those who have done the same in the NBA.” (link)

Villanova quarterback Patriot McQuaide received a preliminary injunction yesterday in his eligibility case, allowing him to play in last night’s season opener against William & Mary, which the Tribe clinched in a late comeback, 35-32. (link)

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled yesterday in 3-0 fashion that states have oversight of regulating prediction marketplaces. Notable from the appeals panel: “The substance of the sports event contracts offered on Kalshi’s (exchange) is sports gambling, regardless of whether Kalshi calls them swaps. Kalshi’s attempts to distinguish its sports event contracts from sportsbooks betting are unpersuasive.” NCAA President Charlie Baker issued a statement in response to the ruling: “The NCAA has expressed its concerns about this in numerous forums, because it fractures competitive integrity and puts student-athletes at risk. The Federal Court of Appeals decision today that says states can regulate prediction markets the same way they regulate traditional sports betting is a win for student-athletes and the integrity of all sporting events.” As you might expect, Kalshi plans to appeal the ruling. Retiring Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman joins NYSE’s Taking Stock to reflect on the league’s evolution, its basketball-first identity and the traditions that have helped make it one of the most recognizable brands in college sports. Most notably, on maintaining conference cohesion amidst rapid national realignment: "Keeping that DNA intact over the last 13 years has really been practically job one for me. ... I think we've been able to do that. We've maintained our ties to big cities. We're sort of ensconced here in New York City. … I think there really is a sense of commonality among our schools that is helpful to have at a time when so much change is going on in college sports. … To be able to point to sort of stability and cohesion and a common sense of purpose, it's a gift. ... They're going to need it as college sports continues to face challenges in the years ahead." (link

Writing for Extra Points, KC Smurthwaite caught up with Metro Conference Commissioner Travis Tellitocci to discuss the league’s recent rebrand that eliminated its MAC-MAAC acronym issue. Tellitocci: “When I first started this project, somebody mentioned that brand refreshes are overrated. It’s a little bit of a blip, and you move on. My response was, we have a name problem. It’s not just a rebrand. We actually have a problem that we need to solve. … I think we almost went 10, 11 rounds before we got to where we were.” Now three years into his tenure, the conference has checked off much of the infrastructure work Tellitocci hoped to accomplish, including the strategic plan, media rights agreement, championship extensions, membership growth and the rebrand. “The cleanup is done. It’s time to continue to be more strategic in how we do things. We have great momentum as a league and need to keep building. … Now it’s time to put our foot on the gas.” (link)

Michigan AD Warde Manuel sat down for a wide-ranging conversation with TMI's Sam Webb yesterday. Of particular note: “I just want to make this clear: I don't sit in isolation and make decisions on my own. I consult with many people within the athletic department, within the university to help make decisions to move us forward, and how do we deal with them? And so this idea that Warde Manuel was the only one making decisions, even the great things that happen, I consult with other people. It's always a team approach. Ultimately, I have to make the final call many of the times. Sometimes I don't get to make the final call; it's made for me. So it's one of these things where if I look at the whole body of work, I'm proud. Are there things I could have done better? Absolutely. If any leader tells you they couldn't have done things better, they're just full of themselves. But I am very proud of the body of work and what we've done.” (link)

LSU AD Verge Ausberry reflected on the impact late Tigers AD/Baseball HC Skip Bertman had on his career during an interview with WAFB-TV’s “Jacques Talk”: “He taught me how to deal with coaches and players. Great mentor. Skip was one of the best at how you pull a team together in the athletic department to one goal. … He took what he did as a coach and transcended that into us in the athletic administration. He put the structures in place that we have now. He started the Tradition Fund. He built facilities – the Football Operations Center, the basketball practice facility, the new baseball stadium and softball stadium, the Academic Center. That was Skip. He did a lot that most athletic directors wouldn’t do or couldn’t do.” (link)

Nebraska women’s volleyball is in the middle of on an unprecedented early-season stretch over the next 11 days, headlined by Thursday’s Spikes Under the Lights exhibition at AT&T Stadium that featured a $1M overall NIL purse and a $400K winner’s share - the Huskers won both matches. The high-profile slate continues with the Players Era Volleyball Showcase at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday and a September 6 matchup against Missouri at Wrigley Field as part of the Big Ten/SEC Challenge, reflecting a concerted effort by media rights holders and collegiate leaders to capitalize on surging sport-wide viewership. Huskers HC Dani Busboom Kelly embraced the rigorous road show to challenge her roster early, while AD Troy Dannen backed the aggressive scheduling amid an ongoing ticketing reseat and capacity expansion at NU’s Devaney Center, for a program that led the nation by generating $5.65M in revenue in FY25. (link)

Following its report on head coaches, Collegiate Sports Connect has released a complementary Coach Intel snapshot benchmarking guaranteed compensation for Division I Women's Volleyball assistant coaches. The data highlights a distinct Power 4 premium, where the overall median assistant salary of $85K represents a 63% increase over the Group of 6 median ($52K). Within the autonomous leagues, the Big Ten sets the market for median pay ($95K), while the SEC features the highest ceiling, with its 75th percentile reaching $114K for top-tier bench talent. Outside the Power 4, compensation remains tightly clustered, as the Group of 6 median sits less than $5K above the FCS/DI-AAA baseline ($47,112). Lots more in the full report, take a look on Connect. Cal announced a five-year agreement with Dialpad earlier this summer, which includes jersey patches and is worth roughly $16M over the life of the contract. According to Golden Bear Report’s Thomas Dunn, “Cal is the only school to have an all-sport deal, with the AI company sponsoring all 30 of Cal’s teams along with some club sports. The deal was negotiated by Cal Bears Sports Properties, Learfield’s Berkeley chapter, with Dialpad also supporting student-athlete’s NIL efforts.” Of note, Dialpad has an opt out clause after the 2028-29 season. (link)

Missouri has more than doubled its athletic sponsorship revenue in less than three years, per SBJ’s Jesse Gordon, who notes growth has exceeded 130%, while the department has worked to expand its commercial portfolio and NIL resources through longtime multimedia rights partner Learfield. MU reports its average sponsorship deal size has grown nearly 140% since 2025 with the school having expanded relationships with both Missouri-based businesses and national brands. Several corporate partners have increased their investments to join Missouri’s Diamond Club, the department’s premier partner program. (link) The Tigers have also announced a jersey patch sponsorship with Ambetter Health, whereby the Centene Corporation-owned company’s logo will appear on all football and Olympic sports teams uniforms. Per St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Eli Hoff, “hoops will be a separate deal.” (link)

Marshall will build the Ron & Susan DeTemple Basketball Operations Center adjacent to Scaggs Family Practice Facility in Gullickson Hall, providing a new home for the Herd’s men’s basketball program.
