“We're well over a million on just a reduction of expense because of where we're going".”
Sean Frazier
Northern Illinois AD to College.town’s Anthony Grassi regarding the financial savings of moving Olympic sports to the Horizon League
Featured Opportunity...
Vanderbilt AD Candice Storey Lee joined The Deal podcast with Bloomberg’s Jason Kelly and former MLB star Alex Rodriguez to discuss the athletic department's transformation since her becoming AD in 2020. Here’s what you need to know…
➤ "I think the most important thing is that we changed the narrative by first changing how we thought about ourselves internally. ... The reality is that as an institution, we had not always consistently invested in athletics here. ... I've always felt like if given a chance, we could thrive, but we had not given ourselves a chance. And so our new chancellor unlocks resources to give us a chance.”
➤ "We used to say come to Vanderbilt and instead of a four-year decision, make a 40-year decision. Well, now with the ability to transfer multiple places, you know, I tell our staff it might be a four-month decision but for that four months, we're going to show you why being a part of Vanderbilt is going to change the trajectory for you for years and years to come. ... It's hard to turn down a world-class degree and you're also getting NIL support, and you're also going to be a part of this network for life, like, and you have a chance to win a national championship."
➤ On the difficulty of securing donor investments without a regulated system: "The reality is that we're sort of mimicking professional sports in some ways and don't have the things that give the framework that you're talking about. ... If we don't insert some stability so I can show you real outcomes … then you're not going to want to give." (link)
Ohio State AD Ross Bjork understands what he’s up against in attempting to make the Schottenstein Center a better venue for basketball, per Lettermen Row’s Spencer Holbrook, who notes the effort starts by fixing attendance issues and addressing some cosmetic issues with the almost-30-year-old facility. Key notes…
➤ Bjork: “The Schottenstein Center was built as a multi-purpose building. So it’s not necessarily the best for basketball, but it’s not necessarily best when there’s 5K people in there. But, man, when there’s a big concert or a big game in there, it’s packed. And we need all those seats. It’s just the average that sort of brings the atmosphere to where people are like, ‘oh, this could be better.’ We have a better lighting system that we put in last year. We are putting in a new scoreboard, center-hung video board, new LED. We’ll be able to activate more. It’ll be a lot brighter in there. And then, look, we’ve just got to get more people in the building. Part of that’s winning, right? And I think people are going to see a better team.”
➤ As far as marketing the men’s program, the Buckeyes plan to utilize targeted ads online, the football season and other tools in hopes of yielding a better atmosphere inside the Schott in 2026-27. Bjork: “We’re using the teams better. We’re using more data analytics from a marketing standpoint where we have a lot more customer information about people that are interested in that. … So our data analytic piece is a lot more dialed in where hopefully that can mean better marketing and better attendance. Ticket packages that are going to be rolled out here in the next couple weeks or months ahead. Using the football stadium as a way to broadcast to the basketball, things like that. … So better lighting, better music, better atmosphere, better attendance.” More. (link)
NC State AD Boo Corrigan joined the Wolfpack Weekly Radio Show to discuss the athletic department's culture, the upcoming football season and the overarching necessity of revenue generation…
➤ On evaluating team culture and body language rather than specific play calls: "I'm sure everyone out here, when you run the ball, wishes they'd pass it. When you pass it, you wish they ran it. I'm not watching any of that, but what I am watching is how guys are and how they get up. ... When the other team scores, what's the interaction on the sidelines, right? ... You need people to stay up. You need people to feel optimistic about what's going on."
➤ Prioritizing donor relations and revenue generation amid the shifting collegiate landscape: "It's so much about revenue generation. I mean, that's what the name of the game is at this point, and it's not something to shy away from. ... Whether we like what it is or not. It's our reality. So if it's our reality, let's be the best that we can be."
➤ Creating community events around Carter-Finley Stadium and the Lenovo Center: "The goal of athletics is to bring people together. We're doing this here, and you celebrate the university. Those are two great things. So we needed more space to do this.” (link)
Northern Illinois AD Sean Frazier joined College.town’s Anthony Grassi to discuss his approach to maintaining the university's academic mission amid an increasingly professional landscape, the necessity of exploring alternative revenue streams, including private equity, moving Olympic sports to the Horizon League and more. Here are the main points…
➤ Balancing academic standards with increasing commercialization: "We are quasi-professional. Okay. So we have professional components that we have adopted because of House and others. They need to have a commercial feel to it. We need to come up with a funding model that supports it but not to the downfall of higher education."
➤ "If we're going to have rev share and NIL opportunities and other types of things that need more revenue, we, one, should take a look at operations, private equity and private capital might be one. There's others that we would say, ‘Hey, we need to have innovation that drives revenue and it can't be strictly philanthropic.’ It has to be some engine that continues to feed the dragon."
➤ Financial savings of moving Olympic sports to the Horizon League: "We're well over a million on just a reduction of expense because of where we're going. We're not going to the great state of Massachusetts. We're not going to New York State, right? ... If you take a look at the Horizon footprint, they're in cities. They're in footprints where we're not the outlier anymore. We're part of that process. Our fan bases can travel via car and other to get to these competitions. It just changes the whole mentality." (link)
Louisville AD Josh Heird remarked earlier in the week that "in order for football programs to have success, yes, the financial component is an important one these days, but it's not the only one. You have players sitting at your tables, ask them. I think every one of them will tell you, yes, the financial component is important, but the other variable that's really, really important is knowing that they have coaches and people in the program that are going to ensure that they're successful. We have that, and that is why we want to keep (Football HC) Jeff Brohm here for a long time. As I wrote down here, I said, this man's not complicated. He's easy to describe. He's a great person, and he's a great football coach. And I know a few of you in this room realize that we, the two of us, had some disagreements this spring. But I think we learned both – I think we learned two things. One, both of us can be pretty stubborn. But we also learned that we are both fighting for this university and for this football program to be great, and I will never hold that against him or anybody else.” (link)
Dartmouth Executive Assoc. AD for Administration Taurian Houston joined College.town’s Kristen Eargle on The Career Hustle to discuss coach development, athletic compliance legislation, roster building within the Ivy League and more. Here are some takeaways…
➤ On leading the development and execution of quarterly recruiting summits to maximize institutional advantages against Ivy League peers: "We understand that we don't have the same institutional brand as a Harvard, Yale or Princeton. So, in order for us to be able to do things differently and still win at the level that we're expected to win, we have to be different. This was something that [AD Mike Harrity] brought to my work product and said, ‘hey, we need you to work on this.’ And so working with our coaches to say, ‘okay, what are the things that are preventing you from being able to attract, identify, or retain top talent?’ And so we go about getting feedback from them.”
➤ On evaluating head coaching candidates as program CEOs and educators: "We want our coaches to be the CEOs of their program. We understand being a head coach is more than just the X's and O's, more than just leading your team. ... There's donors, there's managing rosters, there's managing staff, there's managing other personnel. And so being the CEO means that you have that mindset of execution, you have that mindset of business. You have that mindset of, ‘you know what? This is my entity, this is my baby, and I want to make sure I'm leading it at a high level.’" More from Houston. (link)
As reported earlier in the week, Syracuse has struck a deal with Progressive Insurance that will place Progressive's logo on the field at the JMA Wireless Dome between the goal lines and 20-yard lines beginning this season. Now you can have a look. (link)
The Big 12-Monster Energy logo has been painted on the field at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. See for yourself. (link)
SwimSwam’s Braden Keith reports “Former University of Kentucky head swim coach Lars Jorgensen has settled a lawsuit accusing him of sexual harassment and sexual assault that was brought by two of his former swimmers in U.S. District Court. Terms of the agreement were not released, though it was dismissed with prejudice, meaning the plaintiffs cannot file the same lawsuit again. The settlement does not affect the claims against the other defendants in the case, which are the University of Kentucky, and former Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart. Former head swim coach Gary Conelly was dismissed as a defendant in 2024.” (link)

➤ Upcoming changes to Southern Miss baseball’s Pete Taylor Park are still pending approval, but could include a redesigned grand entrance, a new indoor practice facility, a clearer walking path around the perimeter of the stadium, a “Roost Rugrat Stadium” beyond the outfield for the youngest fans, additional seating down the third base line and shade covers above several areas. ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports the recent five-year contract extension for Fresno State AD Garrett Klassy is worth a total salary of $2.9M with an average of $577K per year. Thamel calls the agreement “among the largest guaranteed deals for an AD outside the Power Four.” (link)
More AD comp as CollegeAD has deal details for new Cal State Fullerton boss Shondell Reed: Three-year pact at base pay of $315K, relocation reimbursement of $15K, $700 per month in a car stipend, nearly a dozen incentive opportunities range from $1K to $5K per year. No buyout or payout terms disclosed. (link)
More from Oklahoma AD Roger Denny, this time breaking down his department's concerted push to elevate the men's and women's basketball rosters to ensure both programs are highly competitive before the university opens its new arena in the Rock Creek Entertainment District during the 2028-29 season. Denny: “... two years from now when we go out to market to sell that arena we’ve got to have those two programs humming. We can’t expect that we’re going to wait until two years from now and make a bunch of investment and get those things rolling." OU expects to finalize a facility operator in the coming weeks and Denny points out the Sooners are prioritizing community alignment over strict revenue maximization when selecting a corporate partner: "Where I’ve seen those things go bad is where the economics are bifurcated as such that the operator is making decisions in certain areas on the arena that benefit them more than the owner or vice versa. ... We’ve got to find the right partner that understands that and is willing from time to time to lose a few pennies because it makes more sense from a broad perspective." (link)
Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey on Bronco Nation News Live talked about balancing an $18M athletic deficit alongside future revenue-sharing obligations: "If you look … at our deficit and you look at our rev share, it's pretty much dollar for dollar. ... Since the day I got here, unfortunately we had reserves, but we also had a lot of challenges. ... Deferred maintenance to things that we needed to do … that had just sat for way too long that we inherited. ... We are trying to maximize the house settlement. That is the goal." As for student-athlete movement and eligibility lawsuits: "I've struggled with it. I'm supportive of the five-for-five and I've been a proponent and very vocal. ... We need hard lines in the sand that we can hold each other accountable to. ... I'm so over attorneys and others and agents and even national media to a certain extent. ... I'm tired of hearing that it isn't chaos. ... When you start having professional athletes coming back to school that have their degrees, that wasn't the intent and that's not the purpose of what we represent." (link)
Oregon AD Rob Mullens joined the BFT Unfiltered podcast with JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher to discuss the construction of a new indoor practice facility, navigating modern roster maintenance, managing the department's transition into the Big Ten and more. Here are some takeaways…
➤ On constructing a new indoor practice facility to support sports during air quality events: "Now that we have 20 sports with more year-round training, with the non-traditional seasons and needing more access to it, this became a priority. It's a great addition off of the [Hatfield Dowlin Complex]. It'll have some features that we didn't provide in the Moshofsky Center, [the] ability to punt and kick without interruption from the roof. ... This indoor facility will have an HVAC system so that when we have an [Air Quality Index] in an unhealthy range that we can really move inside and completely control the air."
➤ On maintaining Autzen Stadium's capacity while expanding surrounding revenue opportunities: "For us, it's about filling the stadium, maintaining the intimacy and the unique noise that Autzen creates. And right now, I think that 60K has been a sweet spot for us. ... What we're really going to start to do is look at where there are premium opportunities in and around outside the stadium. Because the way that we've seen our fans engage in the full weekend starting Friday night all the way through Sunday morning, we want to be able to see where there's opportunities." (link)
North Dakota State AD Matt Larsen joined the Insiders on Bison 1660 to discuss the athletic department's final preparations ahead of its FBS debut against Jacksonville State & more. Key notes…
➤ Immediate exposure boost at Mountain West media days: "The amount of eyeballs and the visibility now at the FBS level is just different and it's exponentially different. ... I think there was 122 media members there. ... It helps reaffirm the decision we made to do this for all the right reasons."
➤ Prioritizing specific facility additions before overhauling the Fargo Dome: "We've had conversations about a wrestling practice facility. ... We've actually talked with Coach Mueller today about a combined hitting facility for baseball and softball. ... From a football perspective … being able to renovate the Fargo Dome offices. ... The Fargo Dome … has to get renovated. It's a 33-year-old building."
➤ Maintaining an eight-team Summit League and scheduling for hoops at-large bids: "We feel like this is an eight that belongs together from a regional standpoint. We're building rivalries. ... Let's not add just to add. Let's not make a knee-jerk reaction that maybe long-term isn't best for the league. ... That non-conference scheduling is really critical. ... If you truly want to try to say, 'Hey, if we don't win the league, we want to be an at-large,' here's what we have to do from a scheduling standpoint." (link)
North Texas AD Jared Mosley joined the Primetime North Texas podcast to discuss a number of key issues for the Mean Green…
➤ On Power 4 football opponents buying out of contracts: "There's two sides that have to agree to a contract and you've got to be reasonable. … For people to think like these guys are dictating to us they get the first game so they can then back out of the second, that's nonsense. I've never once had a conversation with a P4 AD that [indicated that] was a part of the mix. The other thing I would say around home-and-homes and this is they're going to get harder as conferences outside of the American – the SEC and others – start to play more conference games and they're weeding out a non-conference, there’s fewer opportunities.”
➤ Taking a deliberate approach to selling the program's inaugural jersey patch sponsor: "It's a new asset. And so when you go out the first time with a new asset, you certainly don't want to just give it away and you don't want to just rush and find whoever wants it first. … Next to your stadium naming rights, it's the largest asset that any of us will have."
➤ Activating the alumni base to drive long-term revenue: "Considering our alumni base, we have probably one of the least active donor and alumni bases when you look at sheer number of people that are in the boat with us. … Anybody who calls themselves a fan or alum, you know, 10 people, you need to be squeezing them every day to buy a ticket or write a check to the scholarship fund or get involved with a capital campaign." (link)
West Florida received a $1.7M commitment from PenAir Credit Union that includes naming the UWF Field House the PenAir Field House and the exclusive premium club space in the new Darrell Gooden Stadium the PenAir Champions Club. The investment will support the construction of the Darrell Gooden Stadium and establish a new endowed scholarship that will support future Argo student-athletes. As part of the agreement, PenAir will also become the "Official Credit Union of UWF Athletics." (link)
In FY26, the Huskers Athletic Fund set a record with $71,658,087 in total cash gifts from 16,815 donors. The record-breaking total marks the second consecutive year Nebraska Athletics has surpassed $70M in annual cash giving and five consecutive years with more than $57M in annual cash gifts. Additionally, more than 1,200 new members joined the HAF and the Nebraska Leadership Society grew from 379 members to 635. Sport-specific excellence funds saw a 411% jump, going from $3.9M in FY25 to $20.3M in FY26. Licensing royalties also saw a 27% increase to $6.56M, plus $35.6M in retail sales of officially licensed merchandise. (link)
Collegiate Sports Connect has released a new Coach Intel report benchmarking guaranteed compensation for Division I Men's Soccer head coaches. The data illustrates a significant financial premium at the highest level, with the Power 4 median salary ($227,500) sitting nearly $100,000 above the Group of 6 median ($130,625), while the 75th percentile of P4 coaches approaches the $300,000 mark ($287,500). In contrast to the women's soccer landscape, where mid-major salaries are tightly clustered, the men's game shows a clearer financial separation below the Power 4, as the Group of 6 median noticeably outpaces the overall D1 Non-FBS baseline ($90,000). Take a look at the full report. (link)
