“Remember, they’ve only been at the FBS level in football for four years, and they’ve already played in the College Football Playoff.”
Tim Pernetti
American Conference Commissioner on the addition of James Madison to the league, speaking to the Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman and Rob Dauster
D1.dossiers... are ready for Air Force, Detroit Mercy, Duquesne, Incarnate Word, Iowa State, Louisiana, Michigan, Radford, Rice, Rider, South Carolina State, UAB and Western Illinois. Coming soon: Florida State, Jackson State and Sam Houston State. Just $349 for an entire year of access to all dossiers. (link)
American Commissioner Tim Pernetti talks about the addition of James Madison, telling Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman and Rob Dauster: “They meet the mark in a lot of what the DNA is of our league. It’s going to strengthen our conference. They’re investing, and that’s a really important thing. They have a brand that’s emerged. Remember, they’ve only been at the FBS level in football for four years, and they’ve already played in the College Football Playoff. … But in general, you’re looking for institutional alignment. Jim Schmidt, their president, and Matt Roan, their athletic director, have a vision.” Also of note from Pernetti…
➤ After two years of sending just one men’s team and one women’s team to March Madness, Pernetti notes that some might start to believe “that’s just what the American is. That’s not who we are. Historically, that’s not what we’ve been. But instead of trying to will it to happen, you actually have to take a step back and really have a critical look at yourself. And we did that. And what we evaluated right out of the gate was we’ve got to bet better in how we schedule. The challenge with scheduling is … there are less available games that are out there. Our coaches are trying to play. I tell every conference and every coach we’ll play anybody. We’ll get bought, we’ll go on the road, we don’t need a home-and-home. Line it up, we will play the games. The games are less available. … So we’re taking matters into our own hands. This Atlantic 10-American showcase is a small example of what we’re trying to do.” (link)
Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger adds this clarification about James Madison’s move to the American: “JMU’s full distribution from the American would kick in at the end of a 6-year integrated timeline similar to the other most recently added members. Full distribution is possible before that date depending on changes to the American’s media rights contract.” (link)
Another nugget from Dellenger as SEC presidents “tabled a vote on re-implementing the intraconference transfer policy that would require athletes moving within the league to sit a season. … Presidents approved a uniform NIL/rev-share contract that includes customizable components.” (link)
Incarnate Word’s AD search is down to five candidates, which CollegeAD reports will go through a second round of virtual interviews this week, adding: “From there, the expectation is that a final group of candidates will advance to in-person interviews.” (link)
Arctos Managing Partner Doc O'Connor and Raine Group Partner Colin Neville talked about the fundamentals driving sports franchise valuations during a panel discussion with MoffettNathanson analyst Michael Nathanson at Puck's In the Arena Conference. O'Connor on the lack of regulation in college athletics: "I worry about college sports. It's a mess. Institutional capital—even family capital—coming into that ecosystem has the potential to cause great damage, because there's no regulatory overlay. It seems to me the only path to a solution is some form of federal regulation, and they can't seem to walk and chew gum at the same time, so I don't have much hope anything will change." (link)
South Dakota AD Jon Schemmel joined host John Thayer to reflect on a record-setting Dakota Days homecoming crowd, review progress on major athletic facility projects, discuss conference stability and more. Here are some takeaways…
➤ Facility master planning and long-term fundraising goals: "This is not build the [Gassen Family Fieldhouse] and then we're happy. The whole idea for us is, at least generally speaking, we never let the contractors leave campus until the [DakotaDome’s] done and until softball's done. And I've been pretty bullish that we want to get all this done in the next five to seven years and I'm pretty confident we can do that."
➤ Conference realignment rumors and commitment to the Summit League: "It was less than two weeks ago, the Joint Council of the Summit League met in person. ... I see the rumors too. If there are schools and people that are standing up in that room and saying, ‘we're committed to this,’ and then walking out of there and going and dancing with someone else, I guess I don't know what that says or does. I'll never blame anyone for looking out for what's best for their institution, but I feel like there are ways to better communicate and be upfront about what your intentions are, what your realities are, what challenges you're facing.” (link)
Virginia Tech Deputy AD/Chief Strategy Officer Ryan Gottlieb Q&As with Tech Talk Live about his mandate to accelerate commercial growth and generate new revenue streams for the athletic department and the Invest to Win initiative in Blacksburg. Aligning commercial resources with on-field success: "My job is to grow our athletics resources and help us get more resources and, frankly, more money in the bank for Virginia Tech athletics. There’s never been a time in college athletics where resources have dictated on-field success and the trajectory of a college athletics program more than now. You look at the teams that have been in the College Football Playoff every year, and they’re the ones with the biggest budgets." As for leveraging Lane Stadium to host live music events: "The coolest thing about stadium concerts is having 40K, 50K or 60K people coming to one location, and everybody is rooting for the same outcome — to have a great time. You don’t have visiting-team fans. ... The concert business is great. We’re actively pursuing things here. It’s definitely part of our roadmap." (link)
The success of this year’s inaugural Spikes Under the Lights volleyball showcase, which brought Nebraska, Florida, Penn State, and SMU to AT&T Stadium to compete in front of 40K fans for their share of the largest prize pool in the history of women’s college sports ($1M), provided yet another example of how interest in the sport has spiked, per Bloomberg’s Lauren Larson. Former Cleveland State volleyball student-athlete Nickole Tara, Chief Business Officer at Full Day Productions, which organized the event along with sports and entertainment marketing firm GSE Worldwide: “The amounts of money are phenomenal. It’s interesting now, so many years later, to see volleyball really become part of the zeitgeist. I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh, I was born in the wrong era.’” SMU HC Sam Erger encourages her players to take full advantage of the opportunities before them. “Getting $5K to post a photo of you holding a box of Wheaties? I didn’t get $5K to live on for the whole semester.” Larson adds: “There’s no bitterness when former players talk about volleyball’s ascendance — just thrilled awe.” (link)
The latest edition of D1.ticker’s 2026 FBS Attendance Trends has been released. Northwestern (170.98%) tops a contingent of 31 schools that have achieved a stadium capacity percentage of 100% or higher through Week 6 of the college football campaign. Comparing average attendance change YoY from 2025 to 2026, Sam Houston (172%), Northwestern (78.01%), Northern Illinois (76.56%), UMass (65.36%) and Temple (56.21%) currently represent the top five for largest percentage increase. Cal has opened an on-campus Twitch studio through livestreaming network StreamU to expand NIL opportunities for its student-athletes. Equipped with Sony and Canon cameras, professional lighting and audio, a Blackmagic Design video switcher to produce streams with multiple camera views, a PlayStation 5 gaming lounge for gaming sessions with teammates and a portable Sony FX3 camera and LiveU encoder to let student-athletes take streams on the go, the facility already has a content calendar in place for 10 hours of weekly programming, including workouts, teammate challenges, cooking contests and campus tours, watch parties and game-day coverage. TheLinkU will support the network by managing contracts, fund distribution and reporting. Additional StreamU studios are scheduled to open in the coming weeks at Arkansas, Texas A&M, Baylor and Houston. (link)

Trading on platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket drove combined weekly prediction market volume to a record $22.2B during recent NFL and NCAA weekends, according to Bloomberg's Maria Paula Mijares Torres. Sports accounted for over 80% of Kalshi's September volume, helping push the company to a $40B valuation ahead of a potential IPO. Torres notes the platforms are heavily leaning into parlay-style combo trades, which constituted 65% of Kalshi's total volume and 53% of Polymarket's U.S. volume, with heavy football days generating $1.36B in daily combos compared to just $900M across the entire previous NFL regular season. The NFL recently joined states to push for Supreme Court intervention against the Commodity Futures Trading Commission's current regulatory framework, prompting Indiana associate business law professor John Holden to posit: "If prediction markets are successful at the Supreme Court, then basically the sports betting regulatory regime as it exists could basically cease to exist." ➤ WHSV’s Connor Burgan notes that a clause in James Madison Football HC Billy Napier's contract specifies that if JMU joins a new conference, Napier and the university "shall engage in a➤ good-faith review and negotiation" on Napier's annual compensation structure, staff salary pool, operating budget and NIL amounts to be commensurate with peer institutions within the new conference. Student-athletes need meals that support performance and recovery. But on the road, food choices often come down to whatever is nearby — with limited variety and few options that align with nutrition goals.
ezCater gives teams access to a broader range of restaurants and caterers, making it easier to provide balanced meals, more variety, and options athletes will actually want to eat.
That’s made a difference for Crown Legacy FC, where Sports Dietitian Katie Best uses ezCater to spend less time coordinating meals and more time focusing on athlete nutrition.
“ezCater lets me be an actual sports dietician. It allows me to delegate almost all the logistical pieces of coordinating meals so that I can really just focus on the nutritional piece of writing the menus and making sure that athletes get what they need to perform.”

James Madison has been accepted into the American, with the Dukes to join no later than July 1, 2028. JMU Board of Visitors Rector Dave Rexrode: “The American Conference is the right home for James Madison University, academically, competitively, and geographically. This conference is where our academic peers compete, they have a shared vision for the future, it's where our alumni live and work, and where our student-athletes will thrive. The Madison Promise commits us to excellence and ambition, and this conference change reflects both.” (link) More details on the Dukes’ decision…
➤ ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports JMU will pay $23M to join the American and receive a media rights/NCAA revenue share “in line with the recent additions to the league. The entry fee and the expected $5M departure fee from Sun Belt is all privately raised money.” More: “The timing of this JMU move comes in part because the Sun Belt had been attempting to raise the exit fees. The league was meeting about that this week and voting later in the week, which sped up this process of the Sun Belt. … The American isn't adding anyone else imminently, per sources. They may add down the line, but this is not a pairing.” (link, link, link)
➤ Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger adds the “annual distribution to American Conference members will not decrease.” (link)
➤ Sun Belt Commissioner Keith Gill: “In an era of collegiate athletics marked by nationwide conference expansion, the Sun Belt has distinguished itself in its commitment to a geographic footprint and a divisional model that fosters regional rivalries, engages passionate fanbases and supports its member institutions’ pursuit of excellence in all sports at a reasonable cost. It just makes sense. With James Madison’s recent announcement of its planned departure, the conference leadership will examine and evaluate all opportunities as it continues its work to ensure the sustained rise of the Sun Belt Conference—the premier FBS non-autonomy conference in the country. The Sun Belt Conference is RISING, and our best days are ahead.” (link)
ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports that one potential change being discussed at meetings this week by SEC officials is a template for league-wide player contracts in which parts are standardized and parts are custom for the school. (link)
The Kansas Board of Regents approved adding language to its fiscal policies during a special meeting on October 9, per the Topeka Capital-Journal’s Bryan Richardson, mandating that institutions inform the board “before engaging in material discussions that are likely to lead to a proposed transaction, agreement, or arrangement,” with board approval required prior to final contract execution. Regents Chair Alysia Johnston: “We do have a lot of critical short-term financial issues in terms of athletics, but we want to make sure, of course, that does not jeopardize anything that we should do long term.” Refined following a September 24 draft review by university counsel, the provision explicitly excludes coaches' contracts, conference agreements, revenue-sharing and student-athlete NIL arrangements. The regulatory guardrail arrives with the Big 12, which includes Kansas and Kansas State, having explored private capital options this year, including a league-wide $30M line of credit per school through RedBird Capital Partners and Weatherford Capital. (link)
The CARE Consortium, a joint NCAA-Department of Defense concussion research initiative launched back in 2014, is nearing the end of its current five-year, $42.65M grant phase, per Sportico’s Daniel Libit, who notes that while a new grant proposal is under review by the DOD, the NCAA is “engaged in ongoing discussions regarding the next steps,” but would not directly answer whether that includes providing money after its $10M contribution to the consortium’s most recent grant.” A source familiar with the situation confirmed the NCAA is not involved in current funding discussions, which are focused squarely on the Pentagon. At the start of this year, Congress reduced the Defense Department’s basic research funding by 4.9%. Now named the Department of War under President Donald Trump, the department has since shifted its scientific research budget to focus on military capabilities, at the exclusion of non-defense fields. Over its 12-year existence, CARE has secured over $105M in total funding (including at least $23M from the NCAA) and studied 53K college athletes and service academy members. (link)
AL.com’s Matt Stahl examines the impact extreme weather and rising temperatures are having on college football for Extra Points, noting it's more likely that more fans keep suffering medical issues in perpetuity, even as some schools do all they can to keep people cool. Per Stahl, the overwhelmingly easy solution to the heat issue, that would cause the least disruption to schedules, would just be to play all the games at night. That’s not how ESPN fills its inventory windows, however, with former American Commissioner Mike Aresco observing league requirements limit early-season window adjustments. “You had limited leverage. Because if you didn’t play those games, you hardly have a TV deal.” For North Alabama AD Josh Looney, his school largely gets to pick its kickoff time because its TV deal in the United Athletic Conference isn’t on linear television, but UNA also makes orders of magnitude less money in the FCS than even the poorest Power 4 schools. Stahl: “Like it or not (I don’t), TV money pays the bills. Schools aren’t giving it up because fans are too hot in the bleachers.” (link)
Memphis Men’s Basketball HC Penny Hardaway on balancing building a competitive roster with a lack of NIL/rev share: “We had $5M and then I had to put $2.6M of my own money in [for 2026-27] to try to build the roster up to be able to be competitive enough to get to a Sweet 16, because you’ve still got to go through conference, win a conference championship. … It’s so different, you know what I mean? The old Memphis was before NIL where you could go out and recruit the top guys. I had two number one recruiting classes in the first four years, over Duke, over Kansas, over Kentucky. … Now that the money value is there, it’s a big difference, but we’re still shooting for the same thing.” (link)

UAB signs a five-year deal to feature the UAB Medicine logo on its primary game jerseys for both men's and women's basketball. In addition, the academic medical center’s branding will appear on Blazer football helmet bumpers as well as on baseball and softball helmets. Learfield’s Blazer Sports Properties helped facilitate the agreement. (link)
Western Kentucky inks a multi-year partnership expansion naming Franklin Bank & Trust as the Official Bank of Hilltopper Baseball and Softball. As a byproduct of the deal facilitated by Learfield’s Hilltopper Sports Properties, the financial institution will receive jersey patch placement on WKU’s baseball and softball uniforms as well as high-visibility signage on the on-deck circles and outfield walls of Nick Denes Field and the WKU Softball Complex. UT Arlington agrees to a partnership establishing 44 Farms as the Official Beef and McClaren Farms as the Official Smokehouse of Maverick Athletics. Through the deal, McClaren Farms will also serve as the inaugural jersey patch sponsor for UTA Basketball, with its logo set to appear on all men's and women's basketball uniforms, beginning with the 2026-27 season. (link)
Texas has sold out of its women’s basketball season-ticket allotment for the first time in program history, ahead of the 2026-27 campaign. The milestone comes after a NCAA Women’s Final Four campaign that saw the Longhorns rank seventh in attendance in Division I during 2025-26 by drawing an average of 9,258 fans to the Moody Center. Jacksonville signs a new multi-year deal with Nike and BSN Sports to continue serving as the exclusive outfitter and supplier of all uniforms, apparel, footwear, accessories and sports team equipment. The partnership was secured and cultivated in conjunction with Van Wagner. (link)

➤ Arizona State is reportedly finalizing a deal to hire former North Dakota HC/current Colorado Avalanche AC Dave Hakstol to lead its men’s ice hockey program. Per College Hockey Insider’s Mike McMahon, it’s not immediately clear whether Hakstol would join the Sun Devils as interim or full-time HC. Sources noted that interviewing and negotiating with a coach currently under contract and embroiled in an ongoing NHL season have stretched out ASU’s hiring timeline. (link)
