The idea was taking the suite concept and putting it right down on the floor. When you look at every other NBA team, no one else is doing this. It's awesome to be at the forefront of this.”

UCLA parts ways with AD Martin Jarmond after six years, per the California Post’s Ben Bolch. Chancellor Julio Frenk in a message to campus: “UCLA must have an athletics model that leads — not just keeps pace. … UCLA Athletics currently carries a significant financial deficit, and its current path is not sustainable. Now is the moment to build a model for Athletics that protects the breadth of our program, creates new opportunities for student-athletes and coaches, and supports itself through the revenue it generates. I believe UCLA should help lead the transformation of intercollegiate athletics: our future must be shaped by purpose — not by pressure.” Jarmond will be owed the roughly $5.9M left on his contract. Former Los Angeles Lakers President of Business Operations Tim Harris will serve as Interim AD pro bono. (link

Miami (FL) President Joe Echevarria is expected to meet with AD candidates for in-person interviews as soon as this week, according to CollegeAD, which reports: “Sources say these meetings follow a series of interviews in which candidates met with other Miami executives who did not include Echevarria. … The belief among sources is that Miami continues to target ‘non-traditional’ candidates.” (link)

OVC Commissioner Matt Wilson joined the One-on-One with Greg Pogue podcast to go over his immediate priorities, which include a directive to stabilize membership between 10 and 12 schools to ensure viable non-conference scheduling. Here are the main points…

Restoring regional travel to combat soaring athletic department costs: "When you're spending so much revenue on, it sounds crass, but it's reality, player payroll, coaches' salaries, things like that, why would you spend $100K chartering your football team for a game in Texas … when you could put them on a bus, go play somebody two and a half hours away and know your fans are coming to watch it."

Navigating realignment among mid-majors: "There's only 32 Division I commissioners. It's a really exclusive club, and you're damaging your colleagues in some way anytime there's membership change. But you have to do it. That's the reality of it."

Benefits of expanding to 10 or 12 full members: "I hope we've got 10 to 12 full members so that our teams have very robust schedules because … there's 32 opportunities to play basketball in Division I now. We're only providing 16 conference games this year and it's a lot of games to go find." (link)

Freshly minted San Francisco AD Brent Blaylock outlined his initial priorities during his introductory press conference on the Hilltop, including the launch of the Director of Athletics Leadership Fund to generate agile, unrestricted revenue, confirmed the athletic department will hire a Chief Revenue Officer and an Assoc. AD for Communications and more. D1.takeaways…

"College athletics is experiencing extraordinary change right now. The world around us is evolving rapidly and no one has the luxury of standing still. ... Our responsibility is to be ready to meet the moment. I'm guided by a quote from General Eric Shinseki. It says, 'If you do not like change, you're going to like irrelevance even less.'"

"The idea with these unrestricted funds is to be able to allow us to adapt and evolve quickly to areas that we think need an investment, and that's over a variety of things whether that's investing in a student-athlete need and a retention need, a facility need. ... Sometimes we just need to have current use dollars that we're able to deploy however needed."

Defining his top three immediate priorities for the upcoming academic year: "One, let's all get in the boat together and start rowing together in whichever direction that we so choose. ... I think the next part is going through and working with either our coaches, our student-athletes, or our staff departments, and really finding out what do you need to be successful. ... And then the third part is just a larger assessment of where we are." (link)

USF initiated a comprehensive rebranding to eliminate the USF acronym across all digital platforms, uniforms, and broadcasting graphics and be referred to as South Florida, instead. Bulls’ AD Rob Higgins led the rebrand to establish national clarity and avoid frequent media confusion with UCF, the University of San Francisco, and the University of Sioux Falls. South Florida retains its traditional Bulls horns logo but now instructs television network announcers to exclusively use the full geographic name during live game broadcasts. Higgins: "I think when you look at really strong brands, it starts with consistency. And I think at times we've moved around in terms of what we've leaned into as an athletic program. And depending on the sport and across our 21 sports, we haven't had the consistency necessary to have a really strong brand identity. … You'll see that through social as well, and making sure we're building as much equity as we possibly can, especially when you think about all the momentum we have, as well as this overall athletic district really coming together in a profound way.” (link)

Appalachian State AD Doug Gillin was on the Mind Your Business podcast with Boone Area Chamber of Commerce President/CEO David Jackson…

Does the facilities arms race matter as much during the NIL and revenue-sharing era? "It still matters. I do think the percentage is probably lower. Now, the good news is we've kind of set ourselves up. You won't see a lot of new facilities at Appalachian. I think we're in a really good spot. Now we’ve got to focus on revenue generation opportunities, whether it's rev share, whether it's nutrition, other things, because everything matters.”

On approaching $1M in annual licensing revenue: "It's a significant revenue stream for us approaching seven figures and that has been a build every year. … Licensing can continue to grow here. We've got a great brand, great color scheme, good marks. Those all matter. We just need to continue to market it."

On navigating rising expenses amidst department budget growth: "Twelve years ago, our budget's $23M. We've grown that significantly, but the expenses have grown significantly as well. Scholarships, now five-for-five, that means not only are you gonna have undergrads, but then you're gonna have grad school, and right now grad school costs more than undergrads. When you start looking at the math, it's more expensive for that fifth year. So, there's a lot of things that you don't think about until you look at the economics of it. That's the most challenging part.” (link)

Sports marketing executives expect the SEC and Big Ten to eventually command nine-figure annual valuations for conference-wide jersey patch sponsorships, according to Sport & State's Mark J. Burns. Here’s what you need to know…

Professional Sports Partners CEO Jason Kohll projected the two leagues could seek $100M per year, significantly outpacing the Big 12's recent $20M annual deal with Monster Energy and putting the conferences on par with the Premier League

Oak View Group President of Global Partnerships Dan Griffis warns, however, that the high-dollar deals limit the number of potential partners: “I don’t think it’s out of the ordinary to ask for that much money or to think that it could be worth that. It just shrinks the pool of companies that could actually do it.”

While a leaguewide deal for either conference has yet to materialize, SEC Deputy Commissioner/COO Charlie Hussey confirms Creative Artists Agency Sports recently presented uniform patch valuations to the conference's athletic director working group, though he says the league remains unready to finalize a deal.

Navigate VP of Consulting Charles Rolston on the timeline for the SEC and Big Ten: "They’re really going to have to get some type of Godfather offer. ... Maybe our math might say that it’s worth, let’s say, 3x more than what the Big 12 sold their deal for if it was the exact same package. ... We might see a 4x number or 5x number because they’re able to drive that scarcity with the brand. The flip side is, how many brands can really afford a $60M or $80M check every single year for a sponsorship?" (link)

Utah State will rename its football stadium as Jim Laub Family Stadium on January 1, 2027. Aggies AD Cameron Walker: "Jim and Carol have been instrumental in supporting Utah State throughout the years and have a clear vision for where Aggie Athletics can go, while helping our university make an impact on the national stage. Their unwavering loyalty, leadership and investment have been critical to the success and growth of the athletics department. This is a fitting tribute to all they have done, continue to do and will do for the future of Aggie Athletics." (link); Here’s a video showing off the new signage. (link)

San Diego State has agreed to a football jersey patch sponsorship with Palomar Insurance. Financial details of the three-year agreement were not revealed, per the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Kirk Kenney. (link)

The family of hospitalized Arizona State men’s hockey student-athlete Matthew Mayich has hired former Arizona Deputy Chief Attorney General Rob Carey to evaluate the athletic department's internal review of an August workout. According to The Athletic’s Katie Strang, Nathan Fenno and Adam Kilgore, Carey demanded administrators place the men's hockey coaching staff on administrative leave after Mayich collapsed during a 45-minute military-style session led by former Green Beret Tim Ziesel. ASU has confirmed that SVP James Rund is conducting an internal review of the circumstances, and Sun Devils AD Graham Rossini last week emphasized that it was “a really, really important distinction” to note the school was not investigating what happened but rather conducting a review. ESPN has launched a digital scavenger hunt to expand fan engagement ahead of the 500th episode of College GameDay, set to air from Baton Rouge before a matchup between LSU and Clemson this Saturday. Fans can access a dedicated microsite to complete daily trivia challenges and locate campus landmarks like the Mike the Tiger habitat. ESPN, which partnered with Assembli and Flowcode to build the mobile platform, will randomly select 15 weekly winners to receive premium front-row access for the Saturday morning broadcast. ESPN Director of Sports Marketing Maggie Lewin designed the project to draw casual local audiences into the broader television ecosystem and says: "We’ve been doing this for now 40 seasons, but it’s also this crown jewel within the larger ESPN ecosystem and a way for people to come in and be like, ‘I don’t maybe watch ESPN or know a lot about ESPN, but I do know that ESPN College GameDay came to my campus and that was really cool.’ ... So, it’s kind of this vehicle into the rest of the four letters." (link)

Feeding athletes doesn’t end when the order is placed. Orderers also have to manage budgets, receipts, reimbursements, and tax-exempt purchasing across trips.

ezCater streamlines the administrative side of team meals by keeping ordering, receipts, reporting, and tax-exempt information in one place. Tax-exempt details can be uploaded once and automatically applied to eligible orders, reducing paperwork and cutting out manual follow-up.

For Jacksonville State, that means less time spent dealing with expense reporting and fewer headaches after the meal is over.

“I don’t like to hold on to paper receipts and get in trouble for not turning them in. ezCater has e-receipts, and having that PDF is way better than a crumpled receipt.”
– Matthew Boone, Head Coach of Track & Field, Jacksonville State University

High-ranking SEC university executives are reportedly exploring legal and internal channels with the intention of addressing LSU’s plans to add former pro athletes to its rosters, per Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, who notes possible extreme measures include boycotting competition against the Tigers; sanctioning the school with probation or even expulsion; and/or filing a federal legal challenge. One school staff member with knowledge of the discussions on the potential penalties the Bayou Bengals could face: “The risk is enormous for LSU.” More…

Over the last 36-48 hours, increasing conversations among 15 school executives – without LSU – have signaled a certain aggressive approach. Those discussions are being described as "not league driven, but membership led,” and what avenues the conference or its members might ultimately pursue remain unclear. For some, the answer is the conference's ultimate and unprecedented penalty: expulsion or a membership probation with one anonymous league stakeholder remarking: “It is fair to say we are discussing multiple options, including that. Enough is enough. This is ridiculous.” Another high-ranking SEC school leader took it a step further: "There are plenty of other schools that would take [LSU's] place."

Other options under consideration include individual institutions refusing to play a program that "rosters an ineligible player based on SEC rules," described one person with knowledge of the talks. "We can't make anyone play them." At the center of the debate among the league’s presidents is the status of their "sovereign immunity," a right under the Eleventh Amendment that provides public universities with legal protections. The approach is seen as the first test of a potential self-governance framework, and while the concept, in theory, may limit legal challenges, permitting a school to break a league-wide rule, such as the pro-player ban, without repercussions would shatter any hope in such a model in the future. Reconvening after a five-week recess, House GOP leaders are weighing an early exit ahead of November’s mid-term elections, with Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) prioritizing a fast-track vote on a Senate-passed stopgap spending bill to avert a September 30 government shutdown. Supported by President Donald Trump and key congressional Democrats, the proposed 10-week funding patch would extend government operations through Dec. 11, effectively deferring major legislative battles, including a party-line budget reconciliation package, Russian sanctions and farm bill negotiations, to the post-election lame-duck session. While Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) plans to focus the upper chamber's brief September session on judicial nominations, cryptocurrency regulation via the Clarity Act and a multi-university college athletics overhaul, the House's stalled legislative agenda and internal procedural gridlock have fueled speculation that lawmakers will depart well before their scheduled Oct. 1 recess target. Rep. Morgan Griffith (R-VA): "So many people are having to run back and forth to campaign. I think we can get some other things done [beyond the spending stopgap], but the big bills will probably have to wait until after the election." (link)

North Dakota State’s 33-7 victory over Jacksonville State on Saturday at the soldout Fargodome capped a whirlwind transition to FBS that saw the Bison’s athletic department raise $25M from four initial donor meetings to fund entry costs, vastly improve football operations and boost roster compensation. Beyond the competitive leap, NDSU AD Matt Larsen highlighted the program's strong regional brand, national fan draw and explosive potential for enrollment and institutional visibility following the move: "I’ve always said, if North Dakota State were located in the South, we would have been FBS probably seven or eight years ago. I think the Mountain West if you talk to them, they realize it’s less about TV markets and all that stuff, but the brand is really important. They recognized that in us and it’s not just a flash in the pan here. What we did in 15 years [in the FCS], I don’t think will ever be duplicated at any level. … Our fan base, they feel as if we have something to prove, like we belong here [in FBS] and we’re a good football program. I’m excited for our team, but really excited for our fan base because they’ve been side-by-side throughout this whole thing." (link)

Cincinnati AD John Cunningham joined the BCJ Podcast to detail game-day operational updates at Nippert Stadium, the financial transition into the Big 12 and more. Here are some takeaways….

On athletic budget growth and internal revenue generation since entering the Big 12: "It is a challenge every day. This is a world we were not in four years ago. We have taken our budget from $74M to $131M. That's an 80% increase in four years. There's real money going into our program and I'm really proud of the work that we've done. ... We had to build a marketing team that was more robust. We had to build a fundraising team that was more robust. And then we brought our sponsorship in-house, which has been a big revenue boost for us, multiple millions of dollars. That risk has paid off in a huge way and we'll continue to as we connect to our businesses locally to generate more money.”

As for the decision to move the Victory Bell rivalry game against Miami (OH) to TQL Stadium [home of MLS’ FC Cincinnati]: "We were contacted by TQL. They're looking to do more football and they've got some plans to have some future football games. …  So they came to us with a really unique proposal. We went to Miami, talked to Miami, and as we kind of crunched the numbers, we wanted to make sure that we could take care of our fan base. But as we crunched the numbers, we realized it would make a lot of sense. If you've been in there, obviously the amenities are fantastic, the premium spaces are great, and every seat in TQL is going to feel like you're right on top of a football game. It's going to be really unique.” (link)

Also from Cincy, the Bearcats inked a multi-year deal with the Jeff Wyler Automotive Family to serve as the official jersey patch partner of Bearcats football and men's basketball. The dealership group’s patch will debut Saturday during UC’s season opener at Nippert Stadium against Boston College. (link)

Duke is set to announce a four-year sponsorship deal to add Edward Jones’ logos to the floor at Cameron Indoor Stadium, per Fox Sports’ Ben Portnoy. The agreement will also designate the financial services company as a Champion Partner of Duke Athletics and the presenting sponsor of the Duke Champions Club. Duke AD Nina King: “What we have available and the changing economic realities of running a big-time [Division I] college sports program, we realized if we could find a great partner that fit us and who we are, then let's go ahead and create a partnership.” The efforts to add branding to the facility have largely played out over the last six months in conjunction with multimedia rights partner Learfield, while conversations were also conducted with former Blue Devils Men’s Basketball HC Mike Krzyzewski, in order to receive his blessing on any corporate logos that would adorn the court that bears his name. King adds: “It’s balancing our needs with the history and tradition, evolving with the current landscape and figuring out what is right to do here. I'm just really excited by how this looks. It's not like, ‘Oh my goodness we turned into NASCAR.’" (link)

As part of a larger institutional partnership with the U.S. Navy’s Submarine Industrial Base (SIB) Program Office, Auburn will add the BuildSubmarines.com logo on the court at Neville Arena. (link)

The NCAA Women’s Ice Hockey Committee has approved a change of dates for the 2027 Women’s Frozen Four at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth, MN. Originally scheduled for March 19 & 21, the semifinals will now take place on March 21 with the championship match-up set to follow on March 23. Committee members’ rationale for making the change was to have all three games of the Women’s Frozen Four broadcast on ESPN’s linear channels. Committee Chair/Boston U. Senior Assoc. AD & Chief of Staff Brittany Kane: “This is a valuable opportunity to further elevate and grow the sport of women’s ice hockey, and we thank all at ESPN for their continued efforts to do so.” (link)

The College Football Playoff, in conjunction with flag football events company iFlag, plans to host the CFP Flag Football Showcase over January 22-24 at CFP Fan Central inside the West Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center as part of CFP National Championship-week festivities. The showcase will feature men’s and women’s teams in both youth and adult teams in various divisions, with each participant guaranteed three games, including pool play and a single elimination tournament. Per the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Mick Akers, in addition to the flag football event, CFP Fan Central is slated to include games, clinics, pep rallies, guest appearances, autograph signings and college football exhibits that will be free and open to the public. Former Missouri Men’s Basketball student-athlete Mark Mitchell, who announced plans to transfer to Kentucky after receiving a TRO granting him a fifth season of college eligibility, has instead decided to re-enroll at Mizzou and remain with the Tigers’ program, per WDRB’s Eric Crawford. The decision represents a significant change for UK and eliminates, at least for now, the potential for a direct confrontation between the school and the SEC over the league's intraconference transfer rules. The move does not resolve the larger eligibility question, however, as Mitchell still requires the protection of Jefferson County Circuit Court (KY) Judge Brian Edwards’ order to return to the hardwood for a fifth season.
