“So you can still solidify, I think, your mission and your values and those types of things. But you've got to be really nimble in your methods, because of the ever-changing environment.”

Beth Goetz

Iowa AD to the Des Moines Register’s Tyler Tachman in discussing her new contract extension through January 2032.

D1.dossiers... are ready for Air Force, Cal State Bakersfield, Duquesne, Incarnate Word, Iowa State, Louisiana, Old Dominion, Radford, Rice, Rider, South Carolina State, Western Illinois and Western Michigan. Coming soon: Campbell, Jackson State, Michigan and UAB. Just $349 for an entire year of access to all dossiers. (link)

After all the drama this week, late last night LSU decided not to roster NFL-back-to-college players Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris for today’s kick against Clemson. However, ESPN’s Pete Thamel notes: “They could potentially be added later in the year, as both are enrolled in school. LSU has 103 players on the roster submitted, and that leaves them two spots.” (link)

USA Today’s Mitchell Northam suggests Duke AD Nina King could be in the mix to replace WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, who is retiring at the end of the calendar year. (link)

Iowa AD Beth Goetz’s signing of a new contract extension through January 2032 signifies her long-term commitment to the Hawkeyes, per the Des Moines Register’s Tyler Tachman. Goetz: “There’s something different and unique about Iowa for me. The opportunity to be able to continue to lead this team and be a part of such a great community is something that was really exciting.” More…

Now planning to lead Iowa into the foreseeable future, Goetz will help guide major facility projects such as renovations to Carver-Hawkeye Arena and Finkbine Golf Course, while navigating the broader shift in modern collegiate sports around player eligibility and revenue sharing. On rethinking long-term planning in today's environment: “At least maybe for most of our lifetimes, those things (strategic plans) were like five, 10 years long, right? And now I think you can have sort of a strategic direction. … Where do you want to head? Because the how you’re going to get there is going to look a bit different. So you can still solidify, I think, your mission and your values and those types of things. But you've got to be really nimble in your methods, because of the ever-changing environment.”

As for her overarching vision for the future of Iowa Athletics: “I would say we want to create a competitive environment in a sustainable way that continues to serve both our student-athletes and allows us to develop meaningful relationships with our fans and community. How you do that’s going to be developed and nuanced over time as the landscape changes, and as what’s important in Iowa changes. But I think that’s really what the overall goal and focus is. From month-to-month, and sometimes day-to-day, the how you get to that point is going to look a little bit different.” (link

More from Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti, this time from an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show…

On leveraging the College Football Playoff structure for centralized governance: "The CFP is a good place for us to start to do more. ... To use the structure of the College Football Playoff to come together, to make rules, how we manage the game, competition committees. At least start with empowering that organization because we all compete for the championship in that organization."

As for the potential of Big Ten-SEC scheduling concepts: "The NFL does a really good job. The reason why you saw the [Tom] Brady [New England] Patriots and the [Peyton] Manning [Indianapolis] Colts play so often is because of where they finished in their division standings. There's something to learn from that. ... You don't necessarily have to schedule home-and-homes. You can say one year you're playing this SEC team and the next year you're on the road, but you’re going someplace different. ... Those are all great ideas that I think fans would lean into." (link)

Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua talks about financial pressures, the Protect College Sports Act, College Football Playoff expansion and more on the ND Loyal podcast. Most notably from Bevacqua…

The risk of maintaining a 12-team College Football Playoff: "If it stays at 12 teams, there's going to be a limited finite number of programs that can continue to make the College Football Playoff year after year. ... My fear is that universities will make the decision that you know what, it's just not worth it anymore. ... The unintended consequence of that is a super league. I think if we don't expand it in eight, 10 years, you're going to get 24 or so teams that just split off from the rest of college football."

The inevitable decline of conference championship games: "If Alabama hadn't made the CFP, I don't think you would have ever played an SEC championship game again. ... I think that conference championship games ultimately are going to run out of steam anyway."

Pursuing the SoFi jersey patch to fund all 26 varsity programs without private equity: "We do not want to do a deal with private equity like some schools have done. That is not something Notre Dame wants to do. ... We want to have 26 – 13 men, 13 women's – programs remain healthy. ... Let's not bury our head in the sand, wake up two years from now and say, you know what, we need to do a patch deal. And all of the great patch deals are quite frankly spoken for." (link)

Texas AD Chris Del Conte agrees with Notre Dame boss Pete Bevacqua on College Football Playoff expansion in a conversation with Sports Illustrated’s Zion Trammel: “I want to play Ohio State. I want to play Michigan. I want to play Notre Dame. But I don't want it to be a detriment to the program. What the nation wants is big games, but if the playoff does not expand, you don't want to be punished. The playoffs have to expand.” (link)

Indiana HC Curt Cignetti leads the pack as the highest-paid coach in college football heading into the 2026 campaign after agreeing to an eight-year, $105.6M contract extension that carries a $13.2M AAV, following the Hoosiers' national championship run. Per Sportico’s Kurt Badenhausen, Cignetti's February deal, triggered by a contract clause that mandated an adjustment if IU reached the College Football Playoff semifinals, placed him ahead of Georgia's Kirby Smart ($13M) and LSU's Lane Kiffin ($13M) in a rapidly escalating market where seven FBS coaches now earn at least $12M annually. Other notables: Ohio State (Ryan Day, $12.5M), Alabama (Kalen DeBoer, $12.5M), Notre Dame (Marcus Freeman, $12M). (link)

The ACC Network’s ACC Huddle show was in Palo Alto last night for Miami (FL) at Stanford, will be in Berkeley today for UCLA at Cal, and Tallahassee for Monday’s tilt between Florida State and SMU. ACC Network Director of Programming Jeramy Michiaels: ”We went from covering one great game and realizing that we can also be at Cal the next day, and with the way the schedule played out, Florida State and SMU as a conference game on Monday night in an exclusive prime time window on ESPN. We thought it would be a great idea that hopscotching the continent for three games in four days would be the right move to kick off the season.” More on the logistics and personnel involved from Awful Announcing’s Sam Neumann. SBJ’s Irving Mejia-Hilario profiles Oregon's student-run sports marketing agency, the Oregon Accelerator, which has expanded to roughly 100 undergraduates managing creative, research, and PR for 114 Ducks student-athletes across 20 varsity sports. The agency's latest campaign features Oregon QB Dante Moore in a TV commercial for M. Jacobs Furniture scheduled to air more than 3,000 times per month during football season across the Eugene and Bend markets. A 22-person student team advised by alumni at Nike and Wieden+Kennedy coordinated storyboards, production logistics, and a custom Moore bobblehead sweepstakes for the retailer, and UO journalism professor Kelli Matthews recalls launching the initiative in 2021 as NIL regulations shifted: "A lot of the students [were] asking ‘What exactly will we be doing?’ [Business Professor] Craig [Leon] and I would just say we had no idea. We were going to build the plane as we fly it." (link)

Additionally, women’s basketball reached 2.9M impressions, and official athletics website KSUOwls.com logged 3.34M page views (up 16.4%), bolstered by a March postseason peak of 785,780 views. Legal Ledger…
Despite former North Carolina Football GM Michael Lombardi’s contract containing a buyout clause for voluntary termination, such as resigning by choice, he won’t have to pay the university for leaving before the expiration of his contract. The university, likewise, doesn’t owe Lombardi any additional money, according to WRAL News. (link)
Former Virginia Men’s Lacrosse HC Lars Tiffany’s breach of contract lawsuit against the Cavaliers can move forward after “Albemarle County Circuit Court Judge Cheryl Higgins denied two motions Friday by UVA attorneys to dismiss the case, saying that an offer from the school amounted to an extension of Tiffany’s existing contract. Higgins noted that the offer from UVA included all the ‘important economic terms,’ including salary and length of the deal. She also pointed out that, in 2021, Tiffany and the university agreed to an offer for a new deal in April, but did not formally sign that pact until December. … In an important note, Higgins also indicated that discussions between Tiffany and UVA about the possibility of adding another year to the extension did not negate the existing offer.” Tiffany filed a contract action civil lawsuit against the school on June 22. He is asking for just over $1.4M and requested a jury trial. (link)
Former Boston University Men’s Tennis HC Dejan Stankovic and AC Jesse Frieder were deemed to have committed ethical conduct violations during the 2024 campaign by arranging for an ineligible student-athlete, who had worked as a student manager and lacked NCAA Eligibility Center clearance, to fraudulently compete under the names of other eligible student-athletes across three competition dates. Resolved through summary disposition and negotiated resolution, the Committee on Infractions imposed Level II-aggravated penalties on Stankovic, who admitted to instructing players to provide false or misleading information before recanting, and Level II-standard penalties on Frieder. Although BU self-imposed a $25K fine, a vacation of records and a one-year ban on student managers for the 2025-26 academic year, the school unsuccessfully contested a mandatory probationary period, which the panel set at one year to highlight the necessity of formal oversight to match the severity of the institutional violations. Stankovic agreed to a two-year specific show-cause order that included a suspension from 30% of one season, while Frieder accepted a one-year show-cause order with a suspension from 10% of one season. The College Football Playoff has released a statement in support of the positions and rules of individual leagues concerning the return of athletes with professional draft, contract or roster ties to college. “These conference rules are intended to protect the needs, interests and integrity of the sport. The CFP believes that certain clear rules should be followed so that individual institutions fielding FBS football teams know what will be expected of them, and so that the public can have full confidence in the competitive integrity of the sport. Given the ongoing legal proceedings, we will not have further comments on the matter at this time." (link)

Fox Sports’ Ben Portnoy reports Group of Six leaders have been quietly pushing for an additional guaranteed spot in a potential 24-team College Football Playoff. American Commissioner Tim Pernetti: “We're supportive of an expanded playoff so long as it provides more access for every conference. ... I feel strongly that it should double in size for everyone, including the Group of Six.” Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez adds: “If you're not playing for something, you're not playing for anything. Having that access point has always been a priority, and, if the field expands, I would 100% favor more access for the Group of Six.” (link)

More from Portnoy as he chats with Group of Six leaders to understand how they are pushing to compete in the revenue-sharing era with rapidly escalating payroll disparities compared to the Power 4. He points to average G6 NIL spending spiking from $1.9M to $7.5M over the past two years in an effort to combat talent poaching by better funded P4 programs. More…

Tulsa AD Justin Moore contextualized the financial reality facing non-power athletic departments: "The team with the most money doesn't guarantee you that you will win or doesn't guarantee that you will get all the players. But not being in the ballpark guarantees that you won't."

G6 stalwarts like Boise State have become staunch outliers in their ability to retain and recruit talent, while mitigating outside factors that have made retention an outsized and unfortunate lesson in capitalism. AD Jeramiah Dickey: “We're choosing to be here. You burn the boats, right? We’re all in on this, and it's worth fighting for these kids, what our industry represents, and, specifically, what our brand and department represents." Broncos Football HC Spencer Danielson adds: “Do we have what everybody else has? No, but I do know we have more than enough. … We play Oregon. We play Washington. We play Penn State, Notre Dame. On paper, do they have more resources? Probably. But, in those games, there's still 11 dudes on the field. We’ve got 11. They’ve got 11 — and there’s not going to be any excuses made from us."

Memphis has been among those non-P4 programs that have pushed beyond preconceived financial restraints, believed to be among the biggest G6 spenders with plans to grow its football revenue share allocation to $10M by 2027. The school is slated to open a roughly $225M Liberty Bowl renovation; has seen an uptick in fundraising from $20M+ to $35.3M in 2025; and is on pace to bring in around $100M in revenue this year. Tigers’ AD Ed Scott: “$78M of that comes from revenue that we create personally. That's better than a lot of Power Four schools, right? … If I had another $40M — I'm not even talking SEC, Big Ten numbers — we’d become extremely formidable right away." (link)

Clemson officials through general counsel Chip Hood sent a Friday e-mail to LSU’s general counsel making it clear that while the school intends to travel to Baton Rouge and play in Saturday's season opener, the participation of former pro football players for the Tigers may breach "contractual obligations between the two parties." Per Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, Clemson administrators and legal counsel have spent the last several days pouring over the game contract, which includes an article prohibiting the participation of ineligible players. The university isn’t “seeking financial damages or in no way suggests filing legally against LSU. However, Clemson emphasizes that it ‘supports the position of the NCAA and our conferences regarding the eligibility of professional athletes returning to play college sports.’" South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, who expressed strong feelings toward any pro athletes taking the field against his state school on Thursday, declined comment on Clemson's examination of the game contract as he had not reviewed it himself. “That said, he believes the SEC, as a private organization, should be allowed to govern itself and enforce its rules, especially a bylaw approved by all 16 university presidents.” More. (link)

The SEC took an “aggressive step” Thursday to combat the issue of member schools and coaches urging and incentivizing ineligible players to sue for court orders blocking NCAA and league eligibility rule enforcement by filing a federal lawsuit against LSU, university leadership and Football HC Lane Kiffin in an Alabama federal court. Per Sportico’s Michael McCann, the league is seeking an injunction to stop the school from engaging in conduct contrary to the conference’s “purpose and mission.” The SEC contends LSU's deliberate campaign to roster former pro players who exhausted their four-year eligibility window violates the conference's First Amendment right of expressive association by forcing it to connect its brand and media rights with conduct contrary to its mission. “Expect [attorneys for LSU] to argue that while the SEC claims it has authority as a private conference to set and enforce rules, it is asking a court to intervene in what LSU could characterize as a dispute involving a school within that private conference.” The case has been assigned to U.S. District Judge Annemarie Carney Axon, who presided over former Alabama Men’s Basketball student-athlete Kai Spears’ recent trial court victory against The New York Times. Florida has inked a multi-year deal with blockchain solutions provider Ripple to feature the XRP cryptocurrency logo on the field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, starting with the 2026 football season. Per Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, the agreement is expected to generate $5M annually for the Gators, believed to be among the most lucrative pacts in college football. In addition, Ripple will also support financial and technology education for UF student-athletes and the campus community, covering both traditional finance and digital assets. (link, link)

Kentucky taps UK Invests to serve as the Official Jersey Patch Partner of Kentucky Football, with the financial wellness program’s logo set to debut on Wildcat gridiron jerseys during tomorrow’s season opener against Youngstown State. Kentucky Sports Radio’s Jack Pilgrim reports the one-year deal will earn UK “just under $5M.” (link, link

Florida State secures a multi-year partnership with Kin to place the direct-to-consumer provider of insurance and home finance solutions for homeowners on the jerseys of all FSU varsity student-athletes for the next four years, starting with the 2026-27 season. The deal was facilitated in collaboration with Legends Global. (link)

CBS’ Brandon Marcello adds more details on the LSU and South Carolina block trades on Kalshi that he reported on earlier this week. For the Gamecocks, they have denied any relationship with “Game Point Capital or any other third-party insurer related to coaching bonuses.” The four block trades, totaling $41,300, would pay out $230K should South Carolina make the playoff ($130K) and win eight or more games ($100K). As for the $662,050 in LSU trades, Marcello: “In the playoff market, 837,500 of the day's 837,735 contracts were that single trade on LSU making the playoff, according to data CBS Sports reviewed. More eye-opening, according to trade data CBS Sports reviewed, was that the risk priced at $343,375 for LSU to reach the playoffs was the largest on the entire Kalshi market that day. It also happened off the exchange because the public couldn't absorb a large trade block of 837,500 contracts at that moment, so it found a private counterparty, a Kalshi spokesperson told CBS Sports. Kalshi doesn't pair the sides, the Kalshi spokesperson said. Firms solicit bids and let market makers find the other side willing to participate.” More. (link)

San Diego State and Oak View Group reportedly paid an undisclosed $900K settlement to the San Diego Wave FC after the NWSL women’s pro soccer club shifted a home game from SDSU-owned Snapdragon Stadium to Louisville back in November 2024 citing field conditions it said did not meet “the standards required for a safe playing environment.” Per The San Diego Union-Tribune’s Mark Zeigler, the penalty was reached through internal mediation and not as part of a civil court case. According to the settlement’s terms: “the university, as owner of the stadium, [was] responsible for $400K. (Oak View Group), in its capacity as stadium manager and a related party, separately agreed to pay $500K, which [was] borne entirely by OVG and not charged to or reimbursed by the stadium.” Full sod replacement has become a regular occurrence at the 32K-seat facility, sometimes as often as two or three times a year, while representing an expanding part of the annual operations budget. Stadium financial documents note $2.5M was spent on “sod replacement” over the first four years, with another $1M budgeted for the 2026-27 fiscal year. Reached this week, Wave officials declined comment about the settlement or current field conditions. More. (link)

The average diesel price in the U.S. reached an all-time high of $5.85 per gallon on Friday, driven by Middle East supply disruptions and the ongoing conflict with Iran that has bottlenecked shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and pushed Brent crude above $95 a barrel. Per the AP’s Wyatte Grantham-Philips, the record fuel cost is rippling across the economy by raising freight and transportation expenses for everyday consumer goods, with shipping surcharges already added by companies such as Amazon, FedEx, UPS and the USPS, and grocery aisle prices rising for perishable foods, produce and meat. Diesel is now up close to 56% from its pre-war price of $3.76. Michigan State Professor David Ortega: "Early on, much of the cost increase gets absorbed along the supply chain through existing freight contracts and retailer margins. But as contracts reprice and fuel surcharges take hold, more of that cost makes its way to the grocery store." For those that don’t drive a diesel vehicle, AAA reports the national gas price average has surged to $4.14 per gallon, surpassing the previous Labor Day holiday record of $3.82 established back in 2012.
