Fox Sports’ Ben Portnoy shares a memo circulated by the NCAA to membership on continued focus on the Protect College Sports Act. Notably: “It is important to keep the pressure on Senators before the final vote. Your voice is making a difference. Now is the time to contact your Senators and tell them to vote YES on the Project College Sports Act.” More. (link)

In his latest sitdown with Georgia Tech’s Helluva podcast, Yellow Jackets AD Ryan Alpert addressed the reseating process and renovations for Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field ahead of the 2027 season, the decision to freeze non-premium season ticket prices at $250, the football program's recent attendance metrics and more. Here’s what you need to know…

Football non-conference scheduling strategy: "When I think about how I can help our team be more successful and you look at scheduling, I'm looking at 2030, 2031, 2032 when we really start to have openings. We're one of three teams to open up the season with two Power Four opponents. When you have young players and the transfer portal with so much roster turnover, I want to help our program get a game to get their feet underneath them."

Ticket pricing continuity and donor priority deadlines: “The Tech Fund for the nonpremium seats will not have an increase. We'll keep the same prices from ‘26 to ‘27, but we'll be looking for folks to make their ticket commitment to be a part of the reseating process. And then we'll have a donor lock date of December 31. So folks that are considering capital gifts, folks that are considering, they could go ahead and pay off a portion or all of their Tech Fund, [and] they'd have the ability to make gifts that could impact their AT fund ranking.”

On the long-term perspective of the 2027 reseating process: "This decision is not, 'Do I want season tickets for 2027?' This is, 'Do I want my family to have season tickets in this location for the next several decades as we support Georgia Tech football?'" (link)

Oklahoma State AD Chad Weiberg joined the The Daily O’Collegian podcast to reflect on the football program's home victory over Oregon, discuss how the university is managing ongoing industry shifts and more. Here are some takeaways….

On the university branding and enrollment impact from hosting last weekend’s high-profile football win over Oregon: "It's a good indication of the value that we bring to Oklahoma State University. This is a big part of our brand and how we project our brand all over the country. I'm guessing that there's prospective students that were watching that game that saw and thought ‘that looks like it might be a fun place to go to school.’"

On managing through constant industry changes and administrative alignment: "We've seen probably more change in college athletics over the last five years than we saw in the previous 50 years. ... For us to be able to do what it is that we need to do, we've just got to get comfortable with change. … Just staying focused on controlling what we can control... Anytime that an organization has alignment in the leadership and the goals and the mission and all those things, it just works much better to get what it is you want to be." (link)

West Virginia AD Wren Baker sat down for a Q&A with the 3 Guys Before The Game podcast to outline the athletic department's financial roadmap, contract extensions for multiple head coaches, a neutral-site basketball event against Pittsburgh at PPG Arena designed to generate substantial NIL funding and, finally, how he survived a copperhead snake bite. Notes…

How the $156M press box project directly funds revenue sharing: "We will get the full $150M committed coming in over a five-year period. We may have to take out and come back to the board for kind of a short-term loan, but no long-term debt service. ... [It] will add an additional $5M at minimum, maybe more, to our annual budget. ... When you look at, hey, over the next couple of years, we'd like to grow our roster spend if there is a $48.8M cap, that's another 10-12 million bucks. And so, you know, to knock off almost half of that in one chunk would be massive for us."

Utilizing the neutral-site basketball matchup against Pitt to fund player compensation: "Both teams will get a significant opportunity … well into the six figures of NIL opportunities for student-athletes. So that's in this environment that's super important. That's probably what motivated Pitt to move a home game."

On the necessity of federal antitrust protection: "Everybody is really struggling. They're pulling from future revenues. They're moving money around. They're taking out lines of credit to try to win the day. And if we don't get a system in place eventually, there's no way that doesn't have a catastrophic impact."

On his refusal to leave for the hospital until the snake that bit him was dead: "She's like, 'Well, we need to go.' And I said, 'You're right, but first you got to bring me a shovel because I'm not leaving here until this snake pays a price.' ... On one leg, hobbling with flip-flops, I took out the snake and its bloodline." (link)

Complementing its offensive counterpart, Collegiate Sports Connect has released a new Coach Intel report benchmarking guaranteed compensation for DI football defensive coordinators. The findings reflect a massive premium for elite defensive architects, with the Power 4 median salary sitting just shy of seven figures at $987,500 and the 75th percentile surging to $1.5M. This reinforces a stark divide across the FBS, as the median autonomous league defensive play-caller earns nearly four times that of their Group of 6 peer ($260K). Meanwhile, the step from the FCS level ($112,184 median) to the Group of 6 represents more than a two-fold increase in guaranteed pay. Athletic departments can access the full database to review peer market rates, model competitive packages, and strategically budget for top defensive leadership. (link)

Michigan State Spartan Athletic Foundation VP of Development Michael Walker visited with College.town’s Kristen Eargle to discuss his career progression across the athletic development, the core principles driving successful major-gift fundraising, how to adapt to new leadership as a senior administrator and more. D1.takeaways…

On transitioning from coaching into athletic development during his time at SMU: "[Former AD Rick Hart] would sit down and walk me through, 'hey look, this is how fundraising works. This is how money flows in the department.' And once I heard that, then it was kind of an aha moment. It was like, all right, well, if I want to be able to truly continue to make an impact in the athletic department, then I need to understand aspects of this."

On targeting entry-level annual donors to build a sustainable donor pipeline: "I’ll start with my time at the Mustang Club. If our annual gift level started at $250, I think it was lower than that, but then I would really target those $75 donors, those $100 donors, those that are giving $50. Those letterwinners that have the potential to be doing more than what they are. ... I would reach out to them. And because of that work, [former SMU Senior Assoc. AD for Development] Matt Peters took a risk and gave me the opportunity to have a small portfolio and I did my best to try to grow that."

On evaluating institutional stability when considering new administrative roles: "Things that you want to be mindful of or who is currently at the institution? Does the institution have a strong reputation, a good brand, a strong donor base, a strong alumni base? Those factors play a role in ultimately identifying, are you going to have success there?" (link)

Cal Poly has launched The Stampede, which will serve as the official philanthropic giving program. Mustangs AD Carter Henderson: “The Stampede reflects what is possible when the Cal Poly community rallies behind our student-athletes. Our alumni, parents, fans and friends have always been an essential part of Mustang Athletics. Through The Stampede, they have a clear and meaningful way to invest in our young people—helping them pursue excellence in competition, in the classroom and in life.” (link)

The Mississippi Department of Public Safety (MDPS) plans to deploy the “largest presence” of officers it’s ever assigned to a college football gameday for LSU’s visit today to face Ole Miss, per Nola.com’s Reed Darcey, who notes the agency is assigning 65-70 state troopers and commercial transportation officers to the campus. The expected force is roughly three times the size of what’s typically deployed for UM home games as local officials prepare for more than 90K visitors attending LSU HC Lane Kiffin’s first return to Oxford since leaving the program. Mississippi Highway Patrol is activating its special operations group, air command and mobile command center starting Thursday, with Louisiana State Police to contribute 10-15 troopers to support the visiting team's security detail alongside additional mounted units from Mobile, Ala. MDPS Commissioner Sean Tindell: "Our priority is making sure everyone can enjoy the game and surrounding events safely. This enhanced presence is about being prepared, staying proactive and working together.” (link)

The NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports advanced two health and safety initiatives this week by supporting ongoing substance misuse work from the Prevention and Harm Reduction Advisory Group and approving the charter for the Cardiac Advisory Group. The Harm Reduction Advisory Group will finalize a unified policy framework addressing alcohol, cannabis, and sports betting this fall, while the newly chartered cardiac unit—featuring representatives from the American Heart Association and the Sports Cardiology Society—will convene in 2027 to overhaul cardiovascular care best practices. Additionally, committee members reviewed a recent partnership with the FBI to combat cyber-enabled crimes and "sextortion" targeting student-athletes. (link)

In the latest Protect College Sports Act developments, New York Yankees President/College Sports Council member Randy Levine, who is leading executive branch congressional efforts regarding the legislation for President Donald Trump, has strongly encouraged Republican Florida Sens. Ashley Moody and Rick Scott to support the bill as their constituent schools "have nowhere else to go,” with SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey and Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti having publicly confirmed they are satisfied with their current membership. On Thursday, the senators voted against the second of three procedural motions with two of their most prominent state universities (Florida State and Miami FL) having raised issues with the legislation. Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger: “Officials from at least five ACC schools — Clemson, North Carolina and Stanford, too — have expressed concerns to lawmakers over the provision.” It could also pose a problem in the House of Representatives, where states such as Florida, California and North and South Carolina hold more than 100 delegates. One Congressional official added: “The schools are already working their House members against it.” (link)

Bama247’s Mike Rodak highlights a notable change to the eligibility wording in the latest PCSA draft, which now includes, "serious athletic injury or medical condition" as possible exceptions to the five-year eligibility rule -- if adopted by NCAA rule. Rodak: “The previous version of the text from August did not include that clause. The NCAA's 5-for-5 rule change specifically eliminated medical (or illness) waivers that were commonplace for years. But that has been targeted already in at least one federal lawsuit. The revised text still uses the term ‘calendar year’ to define eligibility, which is commonly defined as January 1-December 31 and not aligned with ‘academic year.’ By the letter of the law as written, that would be problematic for spring sports athletes in their fifth academic year but sixth calendar year since enrollment.” (link)

The Arkansas Board of Trustees today passed a resolution, proposed by Trustee Ashley Caldwell and seconded by Trustee Steve Cox, directing UA System President Jay B. Silveria to lead a review of the state of competitiveness of Razorback Athletics, including steps to improve football program resources. Trustee Kevin Crass: “It’s going to take a collective effort to put the university in a position where we can have the level of success that our fans so desperately want. It’s a challenge that’s daunting, but I think we have the people and the fans to meet the challenge. … I appreciate the resolution and the effort that is reflected, and hope that we’ll all work together to accomplish what it’s meant to accomplish.” Cox added: “Failure is not an option. This has to succeed and I believe it will.” (link

Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark views Saturday’s Union Jack Classic between Kansas and Arizona State at London’s Wembley Stadium as a promotional vehicle on the global stage, per The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman. D1.takeaways…

The league sees global expansion as a catalyst to boost international student-athlete recruitment (which currently sits at 14% in the Big 12), drive university enrollment and expand international campus footprints. Yormark: “There’s a multitude of reasons why I think going global will help this conference, both short-term and long-term. Becoming more relevant in markets across the globe as it relates to our content, I think also puts us in a better position when we go into the media marketplace as free agents in January of ’30.”

The Union Jack Classic is the brainchild of Brian Dubiski, a global marketer and former Texas Tech football player who saw how the World Cup, Premier League and other European sports had piqued Americans’ interest. “We just kept questioning why no one had taken a game over to London yet, specifically because the NFL’s been there for multiple decades. Before this, I don’t know that the Europeans were really ready for American football outside of just the NFL, because the NFL is the pinnacle of our sport. … I just think that expansion of cross-global sports, the timing was right, and so we just took advantage of it.” (link)

UCLA AD Tim Harris sits down for an exclusive interview with the California Post’s Ben Bolch to discuss ticket sales, professionalizing the department's operations and more. Here are some of Harris’ key comments…

What needs to be done to remove capacity tarps? "The only way we're going to get there is we start with more season ticket holders. ... If you're at [54K] and whatever, and your season ticket base is [10K], to need 44K every game, that’s hard. … That's a lift. If you can get your season ticket base to 20K, 25K and now you're trying to individualize your way up, okay, that's doable. … Then you're adding things such as how your team is doing, then you're adding what the opponent's like, how well the opponent travels, day of the week, all those other intangibles, but it starts with a really healthy season ticket base. We've got to get there.”

Shifting from a traditional athletic department model to a proactive enterprise: "The current model struggles. And the current model doesn't just struggle at UCLA. … [It] doesn't consider NIL and doesn't consider the portal and unrestricted free agency every year. ... We have to act more like a professional team in terms of revenue generation. ... College athletic departments … what it used to be [was] order taking. The phone rings, you answer the phone, ‘would you like to buy some tickets?' We have to be much more forward leaning on that." (link)

Tennessee’s partnership with Arctos Partners, RVX Ventures and Magellan Development Group on the $285M 865 Neyland mixed-use entertainment project may offer a blueprint for programs leveraging public-private partnerships to build secondary revenue streams without selling athletic department equity. Built on land leased from the university for 99 years, the development will yield the Vols $1.5M in yearly ground rent plus a 3% cut of gross revenues exceeding $25M annually (in the first 30 years, that could rise to 4% or even 5% if revenue exceeds certain thresholds). The university also has the right of first offer if the developers ever decide to sell their equity, and options to purchase the entire project starting in 2068. Club Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams: “[This] seems like a great deal for some admins and leaders at Tennessee. They get to point to the flashy new buildings and outdoor plazas. They also get to tout that the project is ‘100% privately funded’ and toss out pixie dust numbers like $5B in ‘economic impact' over the next 30 years. That’s different, however, from this being a good deal for the university.” (link)

Murray State is officially moving forward with the formation of Racer Sports & Entertainment, LLC, a university-affiliated auxiliary enterprise designed to manage assets, develop new commercial capabilities and create long-term value for the institution. The new initiative will focus on strategic investments; revenue generation and licensing; real estate development, including private/public partnerships; premium hospitality; entertainment programming, including concerts and festivals; media; digital content; intellectual property commercialization; and innovative corporate partnerships, while building Murray State’s NIL infrastructure. It will also support Racer Entertainment Village, a live-work-play-cheer destination designed to serve the campus, community and visitors year-round and fuel regional economic growth. (link

West Georgia offers an update on its ongoing NCAA compliance review regarding a matter involving a prospective football student-athlete and the transfer portal, noting the university is awaiting the association’s interpretation determination. While that process continues, the university has independently suspended UWG Football HC Steve Englehart for the first three games of the season, with the suspension expected to remain in effect throughout the review. President Michael Johnson: “We take our responsibility as an NCAA Division I institution seriously. When we identified this issue, we reported it and took immediate action. We also believe it is important to allow the NCAA process to run its course before reaching conclusions about the matter. Our responsibility in the meantime is to act with integrity, cooperate fully and hold ourselves accountable.” During the process, AHC Jayson Martin will continue to serve as the program’s Interim HC. Nebraska brought in a combined $3.5M from hosting Zach Bryan and the Savannah Bananas at Memorial Stadium this summer, with those events netting $2.3M and $1.2M, respectively. CFO Seth Dorsey notes the Huskers will lean on other facilities to help generate revenue as the $600M renovation of Memorial Stadium will begin after this season. (link)

Utah State receives an anonymous $500K donation to support the Aggies’ Show Me Initiative. This marks the fifth gift of at least $500K since the beginning of the year. (link)

UConn teams with Newmark on an initiative to support Husky athletic programs and student-athletes by enabling university-affiliated companies or clients to allocate a share of transaction- and advisory-related fees generated by the commercial real estate firm toward athletics, academic and research initiatives or the university's general endowment. (link)

Rutgers strikes a deal with Verizon’s Visible for back-of-end-zone field branding at SHI Stadium, per SBJ’s Irving Mejia-Hilario, who notes the marks will debut Saturday when the Scarlet Knights host USC in what’s likely to be one of the program’s most visible national windows on this year’s football slate. Beyond in-venue signage, the partnership also extends to gameday activations at home games and integrations across the school’s official digital platforms. Learfield and Scarlet Knight Enterprises negotiated the agreement. (link)

Butler has engaged MSA Design as lead architect and designer of a multi-million dollar, 12-court, outdoor tennis facility project that’s scheduled to begin following the demolition of the university’s six west campus outdoor courts by construction partners at Shiel Sexton. In addition to donors who have provided backing, the USTA will supply a grant to support a portion of the effort. Hinkle Fieldhouse is also slated to debut its new Taraflex volleyball surface tonight when the Bulldogs host Duke in the opening match of the Butler Invitational. The new court became a reality for the program earlier this month through the generosity of a group of donors, most notably Nancy and Dr. Dennis '71 Lawton, whose lead gift championed the project.
