With the Protect College Sports Act expected to begin what Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger says “could be a lengthy procedural vote process next week on Capitol Hill,” Dellenger shares the details on two Monday press conferences. Dellenger: “Busy Monday on Capitol Hill as dueling news conferences are scheduled with athletes and stakeholders over the Protect College Sports Act: one held by the bill’s authors/supporters, led by Sen. Ted Cruz; and another held by those opposing the legislation, led by Sen. Chris Murphy.” (link)

Georgia President Jere Morehead declined to comment directly on the SEC’s ongoing tension with LSU following a lengthy videoconference of league CEOs, citing two pending lawsuits. However, here’s what Morehead did have to say: "I remain a strong advocate of the Southeastern Conference creating its own rules and governing itself. I'm going to be a strong supporter of Commissioner [Greg] Sankey as he works to develop that model. … There's a lot of things happening now, but I do believe that the SEC setting rules and the league members following those rules is a path forward that we all should support." Meanwhile, Georgia AD Josh Brooks addressed fan backlash after the Dawgs posted game highlights behind a paywall on Glory Glory, its school-backed NIL subscription platform, following a 63-3 victory over Tennessee State last weekend. Subscriptions to the platform—which cost a minimum of $20 per month—increased 10% during the week to approach 2,000 total members after HC Kirby Smart promised the team would wear all-white uniforms against Western Kentucky if subscriber counts tripled (they did and they will). Brooks: "We'll continuously evaluate how we operate whether that's something that will live behind the paywall, whether it's something that is an exclusive window on one day and something that's open to everyone days later. ... I'll always try to keep an open ear to the reactions of our fans. I don't let Twitter drive everything I do because it can become an echo chamber, but at the same time I've talked to several fans since then. I've got a good group of individuals that I reach out to or reach out to me to gauge the temperature on issues like that." (link)
Over in Starkville, Mississippi State AD Zac Selmon spoke with The Commercial Dispatch about roster construction, NIL strategy, and his department's preparation for full-capacity revenue sharing under the House settlement. Selmon: "Whatever the maximum is, that’s where we’ll be. ... Our goal is to win championships, and to do that, you have to be at the top level of investment. We've built our financial model around hitting that cap from day one because if you're not fully invested, you're falling behind. ... In this new environment, every dollar matters, whether it's direct revenue sharing, donor support, or corporate partnerships. We are making sure our structure allows us to maximize every single avenue so our coaches have the resources to recruit and retain elite talent." (link)
Arizona State AD Graham Rossini joined JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous purveyor to discuss the program's strategic footprint in the Big 12 and more. D1.takeaways…
➤ On the value of playing non-conference football games in Texas, like today’s matchup at Texas A&M: "Bigger than just a single game, just that presence in Texas continues to be so important to us. And these games were booked many years ago. Obviously, now in the Big 12, Texas is a big part of our playbook with four schools in the conference in that state."
➤ ASU's status as a challenger brand: "We're going to punch above our weight class and that's really the mindset of we know that we are in a challenger brand. The Big 12 is a conference. We know that we've got this notion of ASU is a sleeping giant or this little sleepy department on the west coast that never seems to really put it together. Those are all motivating things to hear for competitive people in our space."
➤ As for the necessity of federal intervention to regulate the athlete representation market: "A major step forward would be getting control of the agents in our space that exists in any other line of sports where athletes are compensated. We should have that same ability in our space. ... Right now there's no certification. There's no registration for an agent that's representing a student athlete in this environment." (link)
Montana President Dr. Jeremiah Shinn joined 102.9 ESPN Missoula’s Tootell & Nuanez show to detail his vision for Griz athletics during his first months in office, addressing modern roster economics, institutional investment, and the alignment between athletic performance and overall university growth. Here’s what you need to know…
➤ "Athletics is the front porch of the university. When our sports programs are thriving, it elevates visibility, drives prospective student enrollment, and creates a sense of shared pride across the entire state of Montana."
➤ Shinn indicated that the Grizz would explore a move to the FBS level only if college football undergoes a formal subdivision split that creates a distinct tier for Group of Six/FCS-tier programs with its own playoff system.
➤ Navigating the evolving collegiate athletics landscape: "College sports is changing rapidly, but our mission remains unchanged: positioning our student-athletes for success in competition and in the classroom while ensuring our programs operate with long-term financial sustainability."
➤ Maximizing donor support and community engagement: "We have an incredibly passionate fan base across Western Montana, and expanding private support and alignment from our supporters is critical as we build for the future." (link)
The West Virginia University Board of Governors has authorized continued construction and financing solicitation for the $150M “West Tower Project,” per The Daily Athenaeum’s Samantha Smith, who notes the first phase, which included premium seating at Milan Puskar Stadium, began back in November 2025. Mountaineers AD Wren Baker told the BOG the project is on schedule. Baker: “There was some concern as tariffs kicked in and stuff that could really mess us up. But we are regularly doing cost estimates with our partners, and we're on timeline.” Baker said the club seating includes 900 ticket holders and that some of the suites have already been sold. Funded through private donations, Baker also outlined that the commitment for the project is now at $112M of the total $156M price tag. “We still believe that we have a very good chance to raise all the money and not need any long-term financing for the project.” Demolition of the current West Tower is set to begin in December, with the project completed by the 2028 season. Auburn formally broke ground Thursday on the Jordan-Hare North project, the largest capital project in Auburn Athletics and Jordan-Hare Stadium history. From the release: “Scheduled for full completion in the spring of 2029, the seven-level, 300K-square-foot structure will add more than 3K new and expanded premium experiences to Jordan-Hare Stadium’s north end zone. A joint endeavor between Auburn Athletics and the Division of Student Affairs, the project will also feature versatile conference and event spaces, retail venues, student activity spaces, and meeting rooms for year-round use.” (link)
Only 50 of 138 FBS programs (~35%) kicked off the 2026 college football campaign with a starting quarterback signed directly out of high school, per a FootballScoop study examining roster construction across college athletics. According to author Zach Barnett, the reliance on transfer portal signees spans both tiers, with 26-of-68 Power 4 schools (~38%) starting homegrown products compared to 23-of-70 Group of 6 teams (~33%), while the American represents the most transfer-dependent league at 85%. Roster data reveals 80% of FBS starting signal-callers are third-, fourth-, or fifth-year veterans, with 72 starters holding three-star recruit ratings compared to 10 former five-stars. Additionally, 75 total starters originally signed with Power 4 programs out of high school, demonstrating that high school program pedigree remains a primary driver for starting opportunities across college football. UConn released its 2025-26 annual report, revealing that operating costs grew from $109.7M to $135.6M year-over-year—driven largely by the House settlement and revenue-sharing implementation—while institutional university support held mostly flat at $32.5M (up from $32.3M). Total donor commitments reached a record $52.7M from 9,067 supporters, doubling the $23.5M raised in FY22, while the overall "Because of UConn" campaign has generated $232.9M of its $316M athletics target. The report highlighted an internal study showing the department generates $286.9M in statewide economic output, crediting national media exposure from three basketball national titles across three years (men's in 2023, 2024; women's in 2025) for driving significant surges in university admissions applications, alumni engagement, and donor output. The department also added 15 total scholarships (two men's, 13 women's) in FY26 under new NCAA roster limits. (link)
Pepperdine secured more than $17.2M in donor commitments during FY26 - including $7.2M directly for athletics programs and nearly $10M for the upcoming arena, known as The Mountain - marking the highest total donor count (1,688) and total funds received ($5.8M) in department history. The Waves set records with $3.7M raised in current-use funds (a 118% increase year-over-year) and more than $1.1M raised for the Waves Excellence Fund, driven by major gifts such as $1M commitments from Robert and Tisha Walton and the Zeile family. While rival media executives question Pat McAfee's boundary-pushing on-air decorum, ESPN continues to view his presence as a vital engine for capturing younger demographics across linear and digital channels, according to Puck's John Ourand. McAfee helped propel College GameDay to record ratings last season—featuring a 35% jump among viewers under 25 and a 34% surge among women—while growing his social footprint by 12% to add over 1M followers. Industry insiders note that McAfee's insistence on maintaining his YouTube distribution helps him to reach digital-native audiences, while his ability to book and connect with top league leaders like NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell adds strategic value for network leadership. Furthermore, talent agents analyze the deal as emblematic of a broader media landscape shift toward talent owning their intellectual property. One agent tells Ourand: "They all want to own their own IP. In this case, it’s a win for McAfee because he gets full ownership of the show and a distribution platform. And the network gets a soup-to-nuts, fully baked show that already has an audience." (link)
SBJ’s Josh Carpenter goes inside the viral digital comedy series “SEC Shorts,” the brainchild of creators Josh Snead and Robert Clay that often spoofs the biggest games or storylines from around the SEC. Running Monday mornings during college football season, the series has garnered widespread acclaim, drawing millions of views across its various platforms. The duo, who got started by providing fan submissions to SEC Network and talk show host Paul Finebaum back in 2014 while working full-time jobs editing medical lecture videos, eventually built an independent brand across YouTube, X and Instagram. Clay and Snead oversee storyboarding, shooting and production, while enlisting area friends to participate in the shorts. They watch games together on Saturdays before fully fleshing out ideas Sunday morning. Snead: "It really leaves us with about 15 hours to come up with an idea, write a script, get actors, make props, build costumes, find a location, shoot it and edit it." When you’re feeding athletes and staff, reliability matters. Food needs to arrive on time, at the right location, and exactly as ordered to keep athletes fueled and schedules running smoothly.
ezCater helps teams stay on top of meal logistics by centralizing ordering in one place, making it easy to schedule deliveries in advance, enter detailed delivery information, and get confirmation that orders are on track. That means less time spent calling restaurants, checking on orders, and managing meal details manually.
For Northeastern University, that reliability helps Lauren Tebsherany, Director of Basketball Operations, manage more than 20 meals each month for 14 basketball players and 11 staff members during the season.
With ezCater, she can place an order with confidence, knowing the food will arrive when and where the team needs it.
“I like that I can place an order on ezCater and know that it’s going to arrive when it says it will. And I’m not going to have to worry about it in the process.”
– Lauren Tebsherany, Director of Basketball Operations, Northeastern University

NCAA Chief Legal Officer Scott Bearby provides an update on the association's ongoing eligibility cases. Takeaways from his statement…
➤ “Today, in Wisne, the NCAA will be filing its reply brief in the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals, asking the court, consistent with its decision to stay the preliminary injunction pending appeal, to vacate the district court's injunction. … In the meantime, individuals who previously received relief under the Wisne injunction remain ineligible to compete while that injunction remains stayed.”
➤ “On Wednesday, the Georgia Court of Appeals granted the NCAA's emergency motion to stay the trial court's preliminary injunction pending appeal in Godfrey, a multi-plaintiff case involving more than 30 former student-athletes. This continues an important trend. Every appellate court to consider these issues to date, including the Tenth Circuit and appellate courts in Ohio, Tennessee, and Georgia, has recognized both the strength of the NCAA's legal arguments and the substantial harm that results when ineligible athletes are permitted to compete while appeals are pending. State trial courts have likewise increasingly rejected requests for temporary restraining orders and preliminary injunctions.”
➤ “At the same time, additional lawsuits continue to be filed. To date, nearly 77 lawsuits involving 612 former student-athletes have challenged the Division I age-based eligibility rules. While those figures continue to evolve, only 326 individuals currently have some form of active relief, while 286 do not. The largest groups receiving relief remain former men's basketball (132) and football (110) athletes.” Full statement. (link)
Semafor’s Burgess Everett posits it’s a good moment in time for an experienced politician to be leading the NCAA with President Charlie Baker and the association on the precipice of a Protect College Sports Act vote that could stabilize college sports. While Baker feels “pretty good” about the legislation’s prospects for passage through the Senate, whether it eventually ends up on President Trump’s desk for a signature this year remains unclear. Baker: “One of the things that you know I learned from my 16 years in state government is: This is a one-bite-at-a-time type business. I’m hopeful that if the Senate can get something done here, that the House will find a way to make this part of what they deal with [after the election] … We do have some very fundamental issues that would make a big difference, for certainty purposes around rules and around eligibility and around money and around transfers. Those things would help sort of settle down a lot of the uncertainty that exists now.” (link)
Vanderbilt AD Candice Storey Lee and New York Yankees President/College Sports Council member Randy Levine sat down with Bloomberg's Janet Lorin at Bloomberg Power Players 2026 to discuss regulatory challenges facing collegiate athletics, the Protect College Sports Act and more. Here are some takeaways…
➤ Levine on the impending institutional financial collapse without federal legislation: "The facts are that if [the PCSA] isn't passed, the system is going to collapse. Every day you read about each university. [Storey Lee] will be able to tell you losing $100M, UCLA, Maryland losing $100M, Rutgers. And where are they getting the money? They're getting the money from their endowments, which should be going to education. They're getting the money by raising fees on their students and there are not enough donors to sustain this system.”
➤ Lee on Vanderbilt's internal corporate model for revenue generation: "We approach it at Vanderbilt [by establishing] an entity ... Vanderbilt Enterprises, which is the commercial arm for our university and is focused. We have a CEO, Markus Schreyer … and he's focused on generating revenue across the board, including in athletics. … If you're going to share revenue, you have to financially supply. You have to make sure that the money is there to share and to cover all of the decisions that we've made. So you're seeing many institutions, every institution has some type of revenue generating arm.”
➤ Levine on collective bargaining: "Collective bargaining is illegal, cannot happen in college sports except for a very small, very tiny point of private unions. … It could happen at Vanderbilt with a very small 15, 20% of universities, Division I’s that are private, but it's a phony issue. So people put it out there. It's basically put out there by these agent groups knowing that it's illegal, but it's a way to distract from the problem so they can protect their situation where they're ripping off these kids.” (link)
Former NFL Players Association Executive Director DeMaurice Smith and former National Basketball Players Association Executive Director Michele Roberts have been working with a small group of lawyers and labor advocates to lobby against the Protect College Sports Act, per The Washington Sun’s Jesse Dougherty. On the other side of recess, they plan to continue contacting politicians in both chambers, particularly focusing on those who could be swayed by what Roberts and Smith described as labor and race issues with the PCSA. Roberts: “What I find astounding is that all of this is being done without athletes. Beyond it being horrific legislation, it’s even being done without the participation of the labor that’s bringing in all the wealth.” Smith adds: “Take it out of sports and put it into another context. Let’s make the constitutional amendment say there is nothing under the Constitution which would bar or prevent a state from recognizing Black people as citizens. Are you f*****g happy with that? No, no, we actually created the 14th Amendment to identify them as citizens. … So why don’t we just say this the other way?” (link)
The Michigan State Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve the five-year contract of new Spartans AD Dan Bartholomae which runs through June 2031. Per News 10’s Kyle Beery, Bartholomae is set to earn $1.3M in base compensation, with annual raises of $75K that will eventually top out his salary in year five at $1.6M, and performance bonuses of up to 25% of his yearly base. In addition, he will be provided with a vehicle for business and personal use, or elect to receive a $700 monthly stipend; a variety of complimentary tickets; and more. If Bartholomae’s deal were to be terminated without cause, the university would owe liquidated damages in an amount equal to 80% of the base salary for the remaining term. If he were to depart prior to the end of the contract for another role, he would owe MSU 80% of the base salary for the remaining term. (link)
Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek visited with the WholeHogSports podcast to discuss the financial state of Razorback athletics, facility investments, the impact of the proposed Protect College Sports Act and more. D1.takeaways…
➤ Boosting Razorback football funding: "Based on what people invested last year, we feel like we've gone from the bottom of the league to closer to the middle of the league. And that's in what we're spending on our assistant coaches staff, our support staff, what we're spending on recruiting, how we travel. ... We invested about $3M in a new light package, a new sound system, smoke and fireworks. … It's just a part of the attention to detail that we have in our football program right now. And when you have that attention to detail off the field, it is going to show on the field as well."
➤ On the high returns and drawbacks of the Baum-Walker Stadium baseball re-seating project: "Three weeks in, the baseball re-seating has already generated $8.8M in new revenue. ... $5.75M in positioning gifts for suites. … We have 42 Diamond Club members. They give $40K a year on a suite waiting list. ... I know that people don't like it, but generating revenue is really the name of the game in having a successful college athletics program. Unfortunately, generating revenue comes at the expense of your fan base."
➤ The practical reality of college athletics as a business model: "We have 19 sports programs and up until a few years ago, we had three that actually turned a profit. Now we have two that turn a profit and that's football and men's basketball. And the more we spend on NIL and football and men's basketball, the closer those sports are to being net neutral. College athletics has always been a bad business model, but we're having to run it more and more like a business because it's a professional organization and we've gotten a little outside of the higher education realm per se, where you were creating opportunities for young men and women and you didn't worry as much about losing money on those sports.” (link)
New Mexico State AD Joe Fields says last year’s new deals with Blocktickets and Adidas, its new Henson Excellence Fund fundraising arm and more contributed to $11.65M that’s helped drive an increase in student-athlete benefits. Per Albuquerque Business First’s Dylan Ortuno, the school couldn’t initially afford an increased scholarship allotment but Fields noted focusing on increasing player benefits represents the “the other part to building a successful program.” The school has provided 20 new scholarships across its men’s and women’s sports since Fields joined: eight to men’s sports and 12 to women’s sports. From a revenue-sharing perspective, NMSU has paid $3.1M to men's sports and $800K to women's sports since opting into the House settlement with student-athletes from across all of NMSU’s programs having reaped rev-sharing deals. Fields: "With the increased revenue that we’ve been able to generate, we’ve been able to provide our student-athletes with player benefits. … Almost $1M at all levels in women’s sports is tremendous. Those numbers are broken up between women’s basketball, softball and volleyball. … We signed 100 revenue sharing contracts across all of our programs, which is (around the) top of Conference USA.” (link)
The Rose Bowl unveiled its new $30M Field Club on Thursday, two days prior to its official opening for UCLA’s match-up against San Diego State. Per the California Post’s Ben Bolch, “from the dimly lit entrance that’s supposed to evoke a speakeasy to the horseshoe-shaped bar to a state-of-the-art video board that UCLA players will run past on their way from the locker room to the field, the just-completed club will be a new hot gathering spot before, during and after games.” Access will be limited to those who purchase 1K premium seats surrounding the club in the south end zone. New Bruins AD Tim Harris noted the Field Club could better position UCLA to bring in more revenue since the school gets to keep the money generated through premium-seat sales. More, including pics. Another week and diesel prices reached another record on Friday, moving past $6 per gallon as the U.S. war with Iran continues disrupting the global oil supply chain. The national average of nearly $6.06 is up 21 cents from last week and represents a 60% increase from the $3.76 mark prior to the start of the Middle East conflict back in February. Per the AP’s Wyatte Grantham-Philips, when adjusted for inflation, fuel prices have been higher in the past. “Ahead of the 2008 financial crisis, for example, diesel hit about $4.74 a gallon, equivalent to $7.20 in 2026. … And 2022’s then-record of nearly $5.82 — reached just months after Russia invaded Ukraine — would be about $6.56 this year when accounting for inflation.” Prices at the pump for regular gasoline reached $4.29 on average in the U.S. on Friday, up 15 cents from a week ago.
