John Anthony
On Location EVP to SBJ’s Matt Fortuna, talking about the prep work that went into tomorrow’s Eternal City Tip-Off

USA Today’s John Brice gets some feedback from leaders close to the Big 12 who offered anonymous perspectives on the characteristics and skills needed to replace outgoing Commissioner Brett Yormark. Here’s what you need to know…
➤ “The new leader has to find a way to close the gap between the P-2 (Big Ten, SEC) and the Big 12 in a meaningful way in this new era.”
➤ “(Yormark) will be difficult to replace. They need to find another forward-thinking leader and not a reactionary like most of the current power conference commissioners.”
➤ Potential candidates mentioned include Fox Sports EVP for Business Development & Media Jordan Bazant, a trio of SEC conference office brass - Deputy Commissioner/COO Charlie Hussey, Chief Legal Officer/General Counsel Jessica Presnall & Assoc. Commissioner/Head of Men’s Basketball Garth Glissman - as well as American Commissioner Tim Pernetti, Tennessee AD Danny White, Pitt AD Allen Greene & Alabama boss Greg Byrne. (link)
More on the Florida State Board of Trustees meeting yesterday and developments around the AD search in Tallahassee come from The Osceola's Bob Ferrante. BOT Chairman Peter Collins provided context on the speed of the search: “... it’s not happening according to some people’s timeline, their desired timeline. Sorry. I wish I could sit down with everybody out there and explain to them what we felt the problems were, what we felt needed to be changed. But there’s not enough time to do that.” More from Collins: “We underperform woefully on monetizing our brand. And as the cost in athletics go up, you have to go find that money.” (link)
Private equity investment in college athletics will remain limited until the industry establishes clearer legislative rules and predictable governance, according to an expert panel at the 15th annual University of Michigan Sport Business Conference reported by Front Office Sports' Ben Horney. Apollo Sports partner Sam Porter indicated that firms require clear legal boundaries around rights management before deploying major capital, while industry leaders eye the bipartisan Protect College Sports Act—which recently cleared the Senate—to double the revenue-sharing cap, regulate transfers and agents, and permit conferences to pool media rights. The ongoing uncertainty regarding student-athlete employment classification and potential collective bargaining presents another roadblock for institutional investors. American Commissioner Tim Pernetti: "College sports has become a multibillion-dollar industry built on the backs of college athletes who are in the spotlight all the time. ... Without it, conferences like his will keep getting raided for talent and coaches. [That is] not sustainable and kills the experience for college athletes." (link)
Forget “This is Sparta,” now it’s “This is the Pac-12” as the league unveils its new team trophy, featuring a “holdable shield” that's “built to be raised, carried and celebrated.” Check it out. (link)
The idea behind tomorrow's Eternal City Tip-Off men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader matching Villanova and Notre Dame in Rome to kickoff the new college basketball campaign resulted from the May 2025 election of Villanova grad Pope Leo XIV. Check it out…
➤ Per SBJ’s Matt Fortuna, Wildcats AD Eric Roedl “half-jokingly” fired off a quick text to On Location EVP and Notre Dame grad John Anthony about the idea. Then came the difficult part of trying to make it happen. Numerous hands were involved in putting the event together at the 11K-seat Palazzo dello Sport, starting with collaboration between On Location, Fox and Players Era.
➤ A near-sellout is anticipated, with roughly 7K U.S. fans expected to make the trip. Roedl said that Villanova has sold 6K ticket packages, and that doesn’t include the contingent of students currently studying abroad in Italy who may go to the game. He expects both schools to cover costs but not make much, if any, money directly off the game.
➤ Anthony: ”It’s been an extraordinarily heavy lift. Nothing that we’re doing was already in place. …Somebody said: ‘I bet you can’t wait to get to Nov. 2.’ I said, ‘No, I can’t wait to get to Oct. 30.’ There is no better feeling than what we do.”
➤ EverWonder Studio - which owns the Players Era - CEO Ian Orefice: “It’s one of one. It’s really hard to compare this to anything else.” (link)
Big Sky Deputy Commissioner Dan Satter talks about the logistics behind the conference's 2027 football schedule release, which officially shifts the league from eight to nine conference matchups, thereby alleviating non-conference scheduling challenges for western FCS programs while taking advantage of new NCAA rules permitting 12-game regular seasons and Week 0 starts…
➤ "You know, quite frankly, with only one FCS program west of the Dakotas in Texas that's not in the Big Sky, our teams have to travel a fair distance or ask other teams to do the same. Between the distance that schools have to navigate as well as how strong our league is, we do struggle to get non-conference games."
➤ "Furthermore, as we looked at when and how to do that, starting the season in Week 0, which also this year in ‘26 became permissible for all FCS teams, what made the most sense was to plug in the ninth conference game to open the season. Therefore, we don't have to ask our teams to reschedule the non-conference games they already had contracted in what were the first three weeks of the ‘26, ‘27, and ‘28 seasons." (link)
Continuing its analysis of athletic department structures, Collegiate Sports Connect has released a new Talent Benchmarking report evaluating senior administration pay across 90 public FCS and I-AAA institutions. The data reveals that non-football departments operate with a notably heavier investment in executive leadership, sending 14.8% of their total payroll to senior administrators (averaging $386K per department) compared to just 11.4% in the FCS ($260K). At the individual level, I-AAA median senior salaries ($123K) are highly competitive with the FBS Group of 6 ($128K), while the typical FCS senior administrator commands significantly less ($104K). However, the report emphasizes that leadership structures shrink rapidly outside the FBS, as the average FCS or I-AAA department utilizes two to three senior administrators while roughly half of all FCS programs operate entirely without a Deputy AD. ➤ WRAL’s Brian Murphy reports that North Carolina will pay Turnkey ZRG $40K for its Football GM search plus $60K for “football consulting, including participation in prospect meetings, retention strategy discussions and roster construction activities through Dec. 14.” (link)
➤ Auburn Men’s Basketball will not hire a replacement general manager this season after parting ways with GM Brian Kloman a week before the opener, according to 247Sports’ Nathan King. The program dismissed Kloman following the collapse of a lawsuit filed by signee Mantas Rubstavicius against the NCAA, after reports revealed Kloman withheld information regarding the 24-year-old Lithuanian wing's previous European college enrollment. To handle roster management, contracts, and NIL strategy, Tigers HC Steven Pearl plans to divide front-office duties across his remaining staff while leaning on athletic administration, including Exec. Senior Assoc. AD/former On To Victory executive director Brett Whiteside. (link)
Today’s Oklahoma State-Iowa State football match-up at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames, Iowa, will “turn Halloween into a real treat,” per The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman, who notes the Cyclones will don black-and-white uniforms, black helmets and revive the “Cynado” logo from the 1990s and early 2000s, while the visiting Cowboys will be clad in orange “from their helmets to the Swoosh on their Nike Skeleton cleats.” ISU had hoped to wear all-black uniforms if the Big 12’s media partners chose to broadcast the game at night. When it was announced as a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff, it “all made sense,” according to Iowa State Asst. AD for Communications Matt Shoultz. The concept gained traction on social media after the league announced the schedule last winter, prompting equipment staffs to seek sign-off from HCs and the conference. The uniform combination was finalized earlier this week. Shoultz and OSU Director of Football Communications Sean Maguire in a joint statement: “They thought it was a great way to take advantage of a unique opportunity.” (link)
The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio has denied former Cincinnati/Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby’s motion to dismiss UC’s breach of contract against him, per Boise State professor Sam Ehrlich, who notes the case now heads toward discovery and a trial. (link)
Baylor filed a lawsuit in Texas district court against former offensive lineman Sean Thompkins, alleging he breached a buyout contract on his NIL agreement after transferring to LSU, KWTX reports. The university claims Thompkins owes $85K plus legal fees and interest after failing to meet the terms of a May settlement agreement established when his December 2025 contract automatically terminated upon entering the transfer portal in January. A federal court indefinitely extended the stay on a Title IX lawsuit filed by three former Penn swimmers against the university and the NCAA regarding Lia Thomas' participation in the 2022 season. Plaintiffs Grace Estabrook, Margot Kaczorowski, and Ellen Holmquist originally filed the suit in February 2025, and The Daily Pennsylvanian's Lavanya Mani notes the court initially paused the case in July 2025 pending a decision in Gaines v. NCAA. Penn successfully petitioned to maintain the hold despite a judge dismissing the Gaines allegations last month. From the Quakers’ legal filing: "Penn respectfully submits that the stay should remain in place until the Gaines proceedings have run their course to spare this Court and the parties from duplicative litigation and a waste of private and judicial resources, and to prevent conflicting rulings on overlapping issues." Fairleigh Dickinson men’s basketball is bucking the trend of teams donning commercial jersey patches designed to make money by instead placing the National Down Syndrome Society logo on its uniforms, per NorthJersey.com’s Jerry Carino. Knights HC Jack Castleberry pitched AD Jason Young on dedicating the space to the nonprofit, whose mission is close to his heart after his two-year-old daughter, Avery, was born with Down syndrome, creating a first-of-its-kind awareness campaign that debuts Monday against Illinois on the Big Ten Network. Castleberry: “What if we found a cause and championed that cause? It would be an opportunity for us to do some good here. … I think there’s a lot of misunderstanding out there about what Down Syndrome actually is and what the lives are like for those who have Down Syndrome. It’s not this terrible thing that I believe most people think it is.” (link)

Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark will depart for an opportunity outside of college sports, effective January 31, 2027. Kansas Chancellor/Big 12 Board of Directors Chair Douglas Girod: “I think in all fairness, had he not joined us and convinced us to go early on re-doing our television deal, we all believe we could have ended up like the Pac-12 did, which was unable to get [a TV deal]. We certainly recognized that and believed it at the time. As it played out, it demonstrated it was the right move. His leadership and experience and network in the media world has continued to be extremely beneficial for us.” Girod to ESPN’s Pete Thamel on what the league needs in its next leader: “I'm going in very open-minded. I don't need a [Yormark] twin. I need someone who hopefully has some experience with campuses, and mostly is going to be an innovator and help us on that path of revenue diversification and thinking differently about how we conduct ourselves and be the tip of the spear in some of these changes.” (link)
Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark reportedly approached league leaders in recent weeks about a departure, citing multiple reasons from conference power dynamics to family reasons to new opportunities, per The Athletic’s Chris Vannini and Justin Williams. More details…
➤ Among other issues, Yormark had “grown increasingly frustrated by the imbalance of power between the Big Ten/SEC and everyone else.” That included the ongoing College Football Playoff-ESPN negotiations, which have been led by Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey and Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua. The full group conducted an October 15 call, hoping to mostly finalize the deal, but Yormark reportedly pushed back strongly, with that continuing into the ensuing days. He and others believed the entire group should be consulted more on the numbers and the possibility of taking the rights to market. While a handshake agreement with ESPN is “95 percent” done, finalization still hasn’t occurred.
➤ “[He] was among the commissioner group that granted overwhelming CFP power and revenue to the Big Ten and SEC in the spring of 2024, when the two leagues subtly threatened to make their own breakaway playoff on the heels of conference realignment as leverage. It was a move Yormark and others came to regret. … For someone who built a career on being aggressive and active with business, getting sidelined with diminishing power created a restlessness.” (link)
NCAA President Charlie Baker joined the SportsWise Podcast with Tulane Sports Law Director Gabe Feldman. Here are some takeaways…
➤ Benefits of raising the revenue-sharing cap under the PCSA: "The move to dramatically expand the school-based revenue share is a good thing. I think it will eliminate some of the, we'll call it games, but it'll create a lot more transparency for people around who's doing what, especially in which sport, which I think is really important. And there's no cap on traditional third-party NIL deals. People can generate as many of those as they want."
➤ Student-athlete revenue sharing forcing a rebalance in overall athletic spending: "If we get to the point where we do have schools spending plus-or-minus up to $48M in rev share on student-athletes, it's hard for me to see how that won't have some impact on what schools spend on everything else. It's a much more balanced distribution. [Arkansas Men’s Basketball HC] John Calipari, who takes great pride in the success that his former college basketball players have had, said point blank, ‘you're not going to have any teams playing in the top end of college basketball where the roster isn't going to cost a lot more than the coaching staff.’ And I don't think that's a bad thing, and I don't think he does either."
➤ Expanding the revenue and audience base for non-football championships: "Our database is everything but FBS football. Schools have lots of data on that, but we have tons of data on all the other sports. And I think there's a real opportunity here for us to work together to grow the game and the visibility associated with all those other sports. And to me, that's a big part of this conversation because if the football program is still the mechanism on which you support and pay for the deficits that are running so many of your other programs, I think it's a much more challenging argument to make. The goal here should be to raise the revenue base for many of those other sports." (link)
Florida State President Richard McCullough took about 10 minutes during today’s FSU Board of Trustees meeting to note the school is actively "looking at and benchmarking" peer institutions when planning for the future of the Seminoles athletic program, per the Tallahassee Democrat’s Liam Rooney. (link); More from Tallahassee…
➤ Per 247Sports’ Kolby Crawford, Board Chair Peter Collins affirmed the AD search “will begin next week, now that the position has been defined. He said the role is changing because of a ‘very rigorous review of the structure of athletics.’" (link)
➤ Noles247’s Chris Nee reports Florida State is expected to “create something along the lines of 'Seminole Ventures,’” similar to the corporate structures created at Clemson, Michigan State, Kentucky and others, with the ultimate goal of commercializing assets to the best of their ability. With such organizations guided by CEO-types, Nee opines that will likely be one of the new positions hired over the coming months, with that individual “generally someone with a professional sports background or familiarity with the college sports marketing and multimedia rights landscape.” That’s in addition to the upcoming AD search, with the goal for both hires to be finalized over the next 45-60 days. He also reports that Deputy AD/GM of Player Personnel John Garrett and members of his staff are expected back regardless if there’s a football coaching change or not. (link)
Sam Houston is accelerating its national AD search, with a nine-member search and screening committee, chaired by VP for Student Affairs Dr. Dannie Moore, set to immediately begin working with CSA Search & Consulting to recruit and screen candidates for the position. President Alisa White: “We are moving forward with a focused and expedited search process while remaining committed to selecting a leader who understands our university, supports our student-athletes and can guide our athletic programs into the future." The incoming AD will subsequently begin leading the search for the Bearkats’ next Football HC, with Bobby Williams expected to remain in charge of athletics until his spring retirement. (link)
The College Sports Commission has published aggregated and anonymized student-athlete compensation figures from the College Athlete Payment System (CAPS), which records rev-share payments from schools to student-athletes, and the NIL Go clearinghouse. During the first year of revenue sharing under the House settlement through June 30, 2026, the CSC recorded $1.77B in direct school-to-athlete payments in CAPS, while 46,478 NIL deals were cleared in NIL Go with an aggregate value of $582.49M through August 31, 2026. CSC CEO Bryan Seeley: “This is the first time compensation data of this kind has been published for college sports. The CSC is making this aggregated, anonymized information available to student-athletes, schools, and the public to help people make better informed decisions while preserving the confidentiality of individual agreements.” The report covers different ranges varying by sport and breaks down percentile-level institutional and non-institutional distributions across football position groups, men’s and women’s basketball and other varsity sports within the A4 leagues and for non-A4 institutions. Full NIL Go payment and school rev share compensation reports. (link, link)
With Jacksonville’s Everbank Stadium undergoing renovations over the next two years, the annual Florida-Georgia football rivalry’s move to Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium this season and Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium for 2027 came as a disappointment to some fans who hoped the game would be contested on campus sites. Key takeaways…
➤ Per The Athletic’s Seth Emerson, unlike a 1994-95 stadium renovation that shifted the series to home stadiums, such a move this time was never seriously discussed. Florida AD Scott Stricklin: “If we had a conversation about it, it was brief. The economics, along with the tradition of it being a neutral-site game, I think really drove the conversation.” Georgia AD Josh Brooks adds: “Obviously you always take everything into consideration, but when exploring this it was too good a situation to pass up.”
➤ While campus home games remain lucrative, both schools will receive $7.5M from Arthur M. Blank Sports and Entertainment for this year’s relocation plus $1.5M each from the city of Jacksonville as part of the deal to keep the game there. Stricklin: “There’s probably always going to be value in it financially, and so that will drive some schools to want to do that. And I know there are still cities out there, and sports councils, that want to host those kinds of games.” (link)
