A bit more from Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark on the potential for a new tentpole football event with the coming elimination of league championship games. Yormark to CBS Sports Eye on College Basketball podcast host Gary Parrish: “We need to replace that and I'd like to replace it with some type of conference football moment. What that is today I can't speak to, but we have some ideas. ... That first Saturday in December is open. Presumably, if expansion happens and the champ game goes away, how do we replace it? It could be a basketball event. Who knows? I'm in the IP business. I want to create events. I want to be able to monetize those events. I want those events to help grow our profile and narrative, and I want to give great special opportunities to student-athletes." (link)

Kentucky AD J. Batt was the latest guest on CRO.ticker’s Margins of Victory podcast with host/LMU AD Craig Pintens. Batt sits down to discuss the financial mechanisms driving the athletic department, plans for a mixed-use entertainment district surrounding Kroger Field, how UK is capitalizing on the football team's 5-1 (at time of recording, now 6-1) start and more. Key takeaways…

➤ Converting game-day environments into revenue: "You can throw the best fundraising party ever, but if you don't call on the back end to make the ask, you wasted the party. And so, in some ways, when you throw a great big party in a stadium with 60K of your closest friends, you’ve got to make sure that you capitalize from a revenue perspective on the back end.”

➤ Financial agility provided by the Champions Blue LLC model: "The ability to take advantage of an opportunity, emerging space, and whether it's adding staff quickly, creating incentivized opportunities, all of those things are really important of how do you manage the business and excel through a period which, as we know, is continued in significant change in college athletics almost constantly."

➤ Evaluating the hidden costs of stadium renovations: "You've really got to be thoughtful about, ‘hey, what's it going to cost to build? What's the capital available to build it?’ … And then you've also got to be thoughtful about the operating expenses. And I think that's one that often gets forgotten about in that model." (link)

Purdue AD Tommy McClelland is focused on converting donor and fan enthusiasm into the financial resources required to compete in the Big Ten, according to Sports Business Journal’s Matt Fortuna. McClelland: "There’s a fabric of integrity at this place that is palatable. They want to win. They are super competitive, but they are proud to know that coaches like Matt Painter are doing it the right way, and that Barry Odom is doing it the right way, that Dave Shondell is doing it the right way, and so those are things that align with my values. I am competitive, I want to win, but I want to make sure I do it at a place that’s grounded in who they are and how they want to define success on and off the field." (link)

Temple AD Arthur Johnson pushed back against Villanova HC Kevin Willard’s claim that he was responsible for the Wildcats' exclusion from the Big 5’s return to a five-team round-robin schedule in 2027-28, telling OwlsDaily’s Shawn Pastor that Villanova's scheduling and revenue distribution demands alienated the rest of the city series. Under Villanova’s proposal to reduce its commitment from three games to two, the event would have used previous-year NET rankings to seed two three-team pods, ensuring the Wildcats would host every pod contest and only travel to the championship tripleheader at Xfinity Mobile Arena. Johnson: "We all benefit by playing Villanova. But we all don't benefit by going to Villanova's place every time, that every time we play them it's got to be on one of their home courts. ... The question that came up was, 'Will we go there two or three years in a row?' My people can't get tickets at their place. It's not like they have a bunch of tickets. Winning on the road is hard. So it's a huge advantage. And they wanted to get the game for free. And then you go to their second home. So they get two home games." (link)

Spartan Ventures President/CCO Jared Kozinn sat down with host Brendan Walsh on the Enthusiastic Life podcast to discuss the creation of Spartan Ventures, the technological evolution of the sports industry, positive aspects of NIL and more. Here are some takeaways…

➤ "There's nobody that works in college athletics that believes that this is sustainable as it is today. I think we're all in favor of reform in some way to have competitive balance, to have continuity, so many reasons. But yeah, there are opportunities for student-athletes to want to stay in school longer. They can make money as college athletes. They have more optionality. There are student-athletes that may not otherwise, if they didn't turn pro, wouldn't be able to provide for their family and they're able to do that at Michigan State and at great institutions across the country. That's an awesome thing to see."

➤ "You talk about corporate partnerships. When I got into the business, it was leading with signage, right? Hard static signage, and you'd have some digital, and now everything that we're doing, you're leading with digital and you're maybe supporting with traditional. I’ve seen that shift there. Our ability from a marketing standpoint to measure marketing success and to be able to track different campaigns and see what's working for us and what's not, I mean, the technology I think has been unbelievable. Sports is as much a tech business as it is anything else these days."

➤ “What it really comes down for me still is relationships. There's a lot of different places for brands to advertise, but working with a partner who's going to bleed for your brand, who's going to make sure that your brand and your business objectives and your community impact strategy and the reasons why you're doing the partnerships are executed to the fullest, that still resonates as the most important thing to me.” (link)

Marwan Saidi’s recent experience attempting to renew his Seminole Boosters pledge and numbers showing a 17% decline in FY26 individual donors illustrate the hidden costs of losing supporters who have already committed money to Florida State, per Tomahawk Nation’s Jon Loesche. Saidi: “The kid who answered took my name and said that my ‘booster rep’ would call me back. I have never received a call back.” Here’s more…

➤ Seminole Boosters President/CEO Stephen Ponder acknowledged problems with communication, recordkeeping and follow-up: "We missed on this one for sure but are using it to remind the staff of importance of follow-up. ... We haven’t been able to maximize the number of recurring giving donors until recently. We launched this program this year."

➤ The donor decline coincides with a drop in football season ticket sales, which fell 18.3% from 34,060 sold in 2023 to 27,838 in 2026. While overall donor counts dropped, high-level giving grew, with former Noles AD Michael Alford reporting Coaches Club contributions rose from roughly $3M to $11.1M despite the group's donor base shrinking by approximately 23% to 1,349 in FY25. North Carolina has partnered with startup Roam Technologies to launch officially licensed drinkware that combines university licensing, sponsorship revenue, and athlete NIL opportunities into a single agreement, according to The News & Observer’s Michael McCleary. Heels Deputy AD/Chief Revenue Officer Rick Barakat notes the athletic department has executed roughly six hybrid licensing-sponsorship deals over the past year to show outside brands it can move quickly on commercial ventures: "That’s something that we can kind of flaunt in the market. 'Hey, we’ve got this figured out, we’re ready to go.' … We want to be one of your guinea pigs or pilot schools." (link)

Sportico’s Anthony Crupi opines it's not hard to see why ESPN was so eager to expand the College Football Playoff with the SEC having dominated early-season college football TV viewership to the tune of seven of the top 10 most-watched programs through the first seven weeks of the 2026 campaign, per Nielsen data. Texas leads the way with an overall average of 8.40M viewers per window, anchored by its Week 2 ABC matchup against Ohio State, which stands as the most-watched game of the 2026 campaign (13.99M viewers). In fact, ESPN’s “broadcast sibling” ABC accounts for eight of the top 10 overall game broadcasts, powered by its Saturday Night Football package averaging nearly 9M weekly viewers as linear TV's third-ranked primetime property behind only NBC’s Sunday Night Football (22.43M viewers) and ESPN/ABC’s Monday Night Football (19.27M). Fox captured two of the top-10 slots via Big Noon Saturday (Ohio State-Indiana at 10.38M and Oklahoma-Michigan at 8.22M). (link)

ESPN College GameDay set up back-to-back shows in the state of Utah, following a stop at BYU with a trip to Salt Lake City for Utah's matchup tonight against Houston, reports The Salt Lake Tribune’s Jason Batacao. The network announced the Provo broadcast for the Notre Dame game drew the largest audience of the season and ranked as the third-most-watched regular-season episode in the program's history. The 40-minute drive between campuses created a logistical reprieve for the production staff, while university officials in Salt Lake City actively sought ways to top their rival's television showing. Operations specialist Jake Daigle: "On a normal season, we’re going everywhere. Being able to stay in the state of Utah, specifically, has been amazing. An hour drive between Provo and Salt Lake makes life super, super easy. I will say, after the grind of the first half of the season that we’ve experienced, this was a welcome break for our drivers.” (link)

Michigan’s sidelining of former five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood is serving as a cautionary tale for college football front offices navigating roster valuation and NIL spending, writes FOX Sports’ Ben Portnoy. While the top-ranked passer in the 2025 class arrived in Ann Arbor on a deal valued into the tens of millions of dollars with assistance from mega-booster/Oracle founder Larry Ellison, personnel departments nationwide are pivoting resources away from high school prospects toward proven collegiate talent. Portnoy notes that transfers currently secure more than double the compensation of an average prep signee, with their share of total roster payroll jumping from 36% to 54% over the past year. An anonymous Power Four GM: "It highlights how strictly GMs will be evaluated moving forward. There's a real cost to having money on the sidelines. If you have too much of it, there will likely be consequences." (link)

On his personal Substack, ESPN’s David Hale examines how shifting payroll distribution has flattened the talent curve and created a "squishy middle" defined by parity across college football. Citing data on Power Four roster spending, Here’s his thesis…

➤ Hale notes that while nine programs invest over $40M and 13 spend between $30M and $40M, a dense tier of 45 teams sits between $14M and $28M, thinning the overall talent pool and reducing the weekly advantages historically enjoyed by blue bloods.

➤ Tracking the narrow margin for error in the ACC, Hale finds that adjusting results by a single touchdown swings Boston College from its current standing to 0-6, while Louisville could sit at 7-0 with just three additional points per game.

➤ "Now, all of those teams spending money are helping to thin out the overall talent pool, so even the ones spending at the top don’t have as much of an advantage as the blue bloods of years past had. But also, the marginal difference in wins between spending, say, $17M and $23M is probably negligible from week to week. Over the course of a full season, spending more probably helps a great deal because it buys you depth and margin of error. But in a sample size of one, a distribution that looks like this can create all kinds of wonky outcomes." (link)

Le Moyne is officially leaving the NEC to join the Metro Conference for the 2027-28 academic year, per Mid-Major Madness’ Sam Federman, who notes the move keeps the league’s membership steady at 13 schools. Here’s what you need to know…

➤ AD Phil Brown said Le Moyne will earn a full financial share immediately after joining the league. The Metro distributed between $350K and $825K to its members in 2024, the most recent tax documents available.

➤ Brown says finding a new conference home for Le Moyne wasn’t on his “bingo card” when he accepted the job, instead keeping his focus on completing the school’s transition to full Division-I member status. The Metro reportedly reached out in late summer, following Fairfield's departure to the CAA, before extending an official offer in September, citing geographic proximity, shared faith-based identities and a basketball-centric focus as primary drivers.

➤ Brown: "They didn’t really give a strong pitch, per se. It was a very nice slide deck reminding us what schools are involved, and a map that showed me geographically where they fit. And for us, it was just a little self-reflection. The geography: everybody’s pretty close. The Catholic identity: we’ll be the 10th school that’s a Catholic school, and so that resonates and matters to us. … I was happy in the NEC. They were great colleagues. We’re all playing tremendous basketball here in the northeast. The NEC does have to focus on football, and for me, the Metro is a basketball league. Clearly, we’re a basketball-only institution, so it seems like a more natural fit for us." (link, link)

UCLA AD Tim Harris joined ESPN LA's Mason & Ireland Show to discuss navigating the financial landscape in Westwood, transitioning the athletic department into a modern sports enterprise, building fan engagement during football's unbeaten start and more. Key takeaways…

➤ Shifting away from the traditional amateur college athletics model: "College athletics is in this transformative period. How you used to view college athletics as an amateur program is no longer. NIL is a part of our life now. The reality is every university has to stop thinking of themselves as an administrative-first program, but more think of themselves as a sports and entertainment conglomerate whose product is college athletics."

➤ Boosting revenue growth through core sports business practices: "We now took back control of our marks. That's something that a college athletic program should do. That's something that a sports and entertainment company should do. We're in the process of working with the university to have a greater role in running the facilities that are on our campus where our teams play. We think there's an opportunity there to untap some revenue that hasn't been available before. And then it's really just leaning into the blocking and tackling of what I had done in my past life, ticket sales, sponsorships, ancillary revenue, content. That's what hasn't really been taking place across all universities, and so I'm challenging our folks to view us in a different way than we've been viewing ourselves before."

➤ Driving ticket sales and eliminating end zone tarps at the Rose Bowl: "I get asked a lot, ‘tell us your thinking around the students being free.’ And that was very easy for me because to me, a Rose Bowl full of students is what big time college football looks like. And so if we're going to have a big-time college football team at UCLA, we're going to need support. We're going to need support from ticket buyers. We're going to need season ticket support. We're going to need donor support. … It is an imperative that we're rolling those tarps away for [the USC game]." (link)

New Iowa State AD Jared Benko’s five-year contract, which runs through June 30, 2031, will start with a base salary of $900K, per the Des Moines Register’s Eugene Rapay, who notes that figure is on par with former AD/predecessor Jamie Pollard, who signed a 2025 extension that bumped his pay from $875K to $900K. Benko’s salary will increase each year, eventually maxing out at $1.15M in the final year of the contract. Should Benko terminate the deal in the first year, he would owe the university 100% of his remaining base compensation for the remainder of the agreement. If a buyout were activated during the second or third year, that percentage would drop to 75%. In the fourth year, it would fall to 50%, while in the fifth and final year, Benko would be required to pay 100% of the remaining salary. In turn, if Benko were fired without cause, the university would owe him identical percentages of the rest of the remaining base salary on the contract depending on which year the termination happens. Writing for Extra Points, Athletics Admin’s KC Smurthwaite posits that recently approved NCAA legislation allowing FCS programs to start their seasons during Week 0 and play 12 regular-season games annually, coupled with an upcoming early standardized start for FBS schedules beginning in 2027, has temporarily shifted scheduling leverage to FCS ADs. Being permitted to kickoff early has altered how administrators negotiate contracts, position bye weeks, construct home schedules and perhaps most importantly, generate revenue. It has also allowed them to charge six-figure "convenience fees" to adjust game dates. With 2026 FBS-versus-FCS game guarantees averaging $450K, programs are now utilizing the calendar flexibility to generate additional departmental revenue, such as North Alabama securing an extra $100K from North Carolina to move their 2027 matchup to Week 0. North Alabama AD Josh Looney: “When they opened up that opportunity, there was a scramble of schools looking for home-and-home agreements, neutral-site agreements and really moving other games to Week 0, which opened up better bye week scenarios and the ability to play 12 games. We’ve signed three amendments so far. The convenience fee really determines if we have a domino effect moving multiple opponents.” (link)

Texas and the McCombs School of Business are partnering with Google Cloud, Dell Technologies and SHI International to launch Bevo Lab, a 25K-square-foot sports analytics and AI hub in Austin's Innovation Tower. Per CBS Sports’ Brandon Marcello, the facility will utilize custom tools such as Football Scouting Intelligence and AI portal scouting models to streamline game preparation and manage revenue-sharing evaluations across all 21 varsity sports. Key details…

➤ Business of Sports Institute Executive Director Kirk Goldsberry noted early work through Google Public Sector had saved coaches over 15 hours per week in game preparation this season, with Google engineers helping rebuild how reports are produced by digging through what Goldsberry called "haystacks of data." Goldsberry: “They would come in Saturday night or Sunday morning and have their game planning reports ready for big meetings Sunday and Monday. That was a giant pain in the rear end. We were able to streamline some of that."

➤ AD Chris Del Conte expressed confidence that data-driven insights will shift traditional coaching strategies, while elevating performance across collegiate athletics: "It's not the boogeyman. Let's lean into this. Let's lean into analytics. ... [Bevo Lab] will become the global benchmark for innovation in sports AI and data analytics." Goldsberry adds: “The biggest mystery here is why did it take so, so freaking long for this to happen at a university?” (link, link, link)

UConn’s recently announced naming rights deal with M&T Bank to rename the Huskies’ on-campus basketball facility as M&T Bank Center at Gampel Pavilion is a 20-year agreement worth $32.5M, per the Hartford Courant's Kels Dayton. (link)

Per the Committee on Infractions, Ole Miss men’s basketball was found to have committed tampering violations when former AC Wes Flanigan knowingly engaged in 16 impermissible recruiting phone calls and 10 text messages with a known advisor to a student-athlete at another school who was not in the transfer portal. The student-athlete, who subsequently entered into the portal, did not visit the Rebels, did not receive an offer of an athletics scholarship and ultimately transferred to another school. The parties also agreed that HC Chris Beard was automatically responsible for the violations under HC responsibility legislation. He ultimately received no penalties after both parties noted Beard wasn’t personally involved in the violations, wasn’t aware of the impermissible contact and promoted an atmosphere for compliance. The violations were discovered during a broader review of the UM athletics department that stemmed from information garnered through outside legal proceedings, including the failure to disassociate a booster involved in the school’s 2017 infractions case. Level I-mitigated penalties include two years of probation; a $455K fine; a two-year re-disassociation of the booster; a one-year show-cause order and two-game suspension for Flanigan; and various recruiting communication and visit restrictions across 2024-25 and 2025-26. Speaking recently with Axios Media Correspondent Sara Fischer at Axios’ Media Trends Live Summit in New York City, Hearst President/CEO Steven Swartz says there’s no price that would result in Hearst selling its 18% equity stake in ESPN: “It’s a great business. [ESPN Chairman] Jimmy Pitaro is just a phenomenal executive and he has a great team under him. Disney are great partners. The NFL, they’re not only the best brand in sports, they may be the best brand in entertainment. To have them come in as partners, we’re very excited by it. No, no interest in selling.” (link)
