“Kalshi’s attempts to distinguish its sports event contracts from sportsbooks betting are unpersuasive.”
Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals Panel
In its 3-0 ruling on Friday that states have oversight of regulating prediction marketplaces

Additional dossiers are ready for Air Force, Cal State Bakersfield, Duquesne, Incarnate Word, Iowa State, Louisiana, Old Dominion, Radford, Rice, Rider, South Carolina State and Western Illinois. Coming soon: Campbell, Jackson State, Michigan and UAB. Just $349 for an entire year of access to all dossiers. (link)
Iowa State is “expected to” partner with Parker Executive Search for its AD search, per CollegeAD. (link) For those interested in getting in the mix, make use of the D1.dossier for the opening in Ames. (link)
The NCAA sent a memo to members yesterday evening with a schedule of notable upcoming multi-plaintiff hearings. Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter notes: “184 college athletes currently are entitled to a 5th season of D1 competition as a result of TROs/lawsuits granted in 5 in 5 lawsuits. 76% of those athletes are men’s basketball players (96) and football players (45).” (link)
College Football Playoff executives are “continuing discussion on implementing participation rules that would disqualify programs rostering certain athletes, including former professional football players,” per Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, who adds: “A meeting next week is expected to solidify a decision.” (link)
CBS’ Jon Rothstein with an update on the Big East’s position: “After two days of meeting with its member institutions, the Big East continues to work towards a more comprehensive policy for its eligibility protocols. Discussions will continue as the league inches closer to the start of the 2026-27 season.” (link)
Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey says the Broncos won’t add any “former student-athletes who participated in the NFL (camps, signed contracts, etc) and those who have done the same in the NBA.” (link)
Villanova quarterback Patriot McQuaide received a preliminary injunction yesterday in his eligibility case, allowing him to play in last night’s season opener against William & Mary, which the Tribe clinched in a late comeback, 35-32. (link)
The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled yesterday in 3-0 fashion that states have oversight of regulating prediction marketplaces. Notable from the appeals panel: “The substance of the sports event contracts offered on Kalshi’s (exchange) is sports gambling, regardless of whether Kalshi calls them swaps. Kalshi’s attempts to distinguish its sports event contracts from sportsbooks betting are unpersuasive.” NCAA President Charlie Baker issued a statement in response to the ruling: “The NCAA has expressed its concerns about this in numerous forums, because it fractures competitive integrity and puts student-athletes at risk. The Federal Court of Appeals decision today that says states can regulate prediction markets the same way they regulate traditional sports betting is a win for student-athletes and the integrity of all sporting events.” As you might expect, Kalshi plans to appeal the ruling. Retiring Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman joins NYSE’s Taking Stock to reflect on the league’s evolution, its basketball-first identity and the traditions that have helped make it one of the most recognizable brands in college sports. Most notably, on maintaining conference cohesion amidst rapid national realignment: "Keeping that DNA intact over the last 13 years has really been practically job one for me. ... I think we've been able to do that. We've maintained our ties to big cities. We're sort of ensconced here in New York City. … I think there really is a sense of commonality among our schools that is helpful to have at a time when so much change is going on in college sports. … To be able to point to sort of stability and cohesion and a common sense of purpose, it's a gift. ... They're going to need it as college sports continues to face challenges in the years ahead." (link)
Writing for Extra Points, KC Smurthwaite caught up with Metro Conference Commissioner Travis Tellitocci to discuss the league’s recent rebrand that eliminated its MAC-MAAC acronym issue. Tellitocci: “When I first started this project, somebody mentioned that brand refreshes are overrated. It’s a little bit of a blip, and you move on. My response was, we have a name problem. It’s not just a rebrand. We actually have a problem that we need to solve. … I think we almost went 10, 11 rounds before we got to where we were.” Now three years into his tenure, the conference has checked off much of the infrastructure work Tellitocci hoped to accomplish, including the strategic plan, media rights agreement, championship extensions, membership growth and the rebrand. “The cleanup is done. It’s time to continue to be more strategic in how we do things. We have great momentum as a league and need to keep building. … Now it’s time to put our foot on the gas.” (link)
Michigan AD Warde Manuel sat down for a wide-ranging conversation with TMI's Sam Webb yesterday. Of particular note: “I just want to make this clear: I don't sit in isolation and make decisions on my own. I consult with many people within the athletic department, within the university to help make decisions to move us forward, and how do we deal with them? And so this idea that Warde Manuel was the only one making decisions, even the great things that happen, I consult with other people. It's always a team approach. Ultimately, I have to make the final call many of the times. Sometimes I don't get to make the final call; it's made for me. So it's one of these things where if I look at the whole body of work, I'm proud. Are there things I could have done better? Absolutely. If any leader tells you they couldn't have done things better, they're just full of themselves. But I am very proud of the body of work and what we've done.” (link)
LSU AD Verge Ausberry reflected on the impact late Tigers AD/Baseball HC Skip Bertman had on his career during an interview with WAFB-TV’s “Jacques Talk”: “He taught me how to deal with coaches and players. Great mentor. Skip was one of the best at how you pull a team together in the athletic department to one goal. … He took what he did as a coach and transcended that into us in the athletic administration. He put the structures in place that we have now. He started the Tradition Fund. He built facilities – the Football Operations Center, the basketball practice facility, the new baseball stadium and softball stadium, the Academic Center. That was Skip. He did a lot that most athletic directors wouldn’t do or couldn’t do.” (link)
Nebraska women’s volleyball is in the middle of on an unprecedented early-season stretch over the next 11 days, headlined by Thursday’s Spikes Under the Lights exhibition at AT&T Stadium that featured a $1M overall NIL purse and a $400K winner’s share - the Huskers won both matches. The high-profile slate continues with the Players Era Volleyball Showcase at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday and a September 6 matchup against Missouri at Wrigley Field as part of the Big Ten/SEC Challenge, reflecting a concerted effort by media rights holders and collegiate leaders to capitalize on surging sport-wide viewership. Huskers HC Dani Busboom Kelly embraced the rigorous road show to challenge her roster early, while AD Troy Dannen backed the aggressive scheduling amid an ongoing ticketing reseat and capacity expansion at NU’s Devaney Center, for a program that led the nation by generating $5.65M in revenue in FY25. (link)
Following its report on head coaches, Collegiate Sports Connect has released a complementary Coach Intel snapshot benchmarking guaranteed compensation for Division I Women's Volleyball assistant coaches. The data highlights a distinct Power 4 premium, where the overall median assistant salary of $85K represents a 63% increase over the Group of 6 median ($52K). Within the autonomous leagues, the Big Ten sets the market for median pay ($95K), while the SEC features the highest ceiling, with its 75th percentile reaching $114K for top-tier bench talent. Outside the Power 4, compensation remains tightly clustered, as the Group of 6 median sits less than $5K above the FCS/DI-AAA baseline ($47,112). Lots more in the full report, take a look on Connect. Cal announced a five-year agreement with Dialpad earlier this summer, which includes jersey patches and is worth roughly $16M over the life of the contract. According to Golden Bear Report’s Thomas Dunn, “Cal is the only school to have an all-sport deal, with the AI company sponsoring all 30 of Cal’s teams along with some club sports. The deal was negotiated by Cal Bears Sports Properties, Learfield’s Berkeley chapter, with Dialpad also supporting student-athlete’s NIL efforts.” Of note, Dialpad has an opt out clause after the 2028-29 season. (link)
Missouri has more than doubled its athletic sponsorship revenue in less than three years, per SBJ’s Jesse Gordon, who notes growth has exceeded 130%, while the department has worked to expand its commercial portfolio and NIL resources through longtime multimedia rights partner Learfield. MU reports its average sponsorship deal size has grown nearly 140% since 2025 with the school having expanded relationships with both Missouri-based businesses and national brands. Several corporate partners have increased their investments to join Missouri’s Diamond Club, the department’s premier partner program. (link) The Tigers have also announced a jersey patch sponsorship with Ambetter Health, whereby the Centene Corporation-owned company’s logo will appear on all football and Olympic sports teams uniforms. Per St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Eli Hoff, “hoops will be a separate deal.” (link)
Marshall will build the Ron & Susan DeTemple Basketball Operations Center adjacent to Scaggs Family Practice Facility in Gullickson Hall, providing a new home for the Herd’s men’s basketball program. This “substantial six-figure gift is the latest in a lifetime full of philanthropic giving from the DeTemple family,” per Marshall’s release. (link)
Murray State has officially broken ground on Phase 3 of its continued transformation of Johnny Reagan Field at Taylor Family Park, which is set to feature two new buildings, as well as new premium suites, a club space, concessions stand activation and on-site restroom facilities. The plaintiffs’ request for an amended TRO in Louisiana has been granted, adding the SEC and Commissioner Greg Sankey as defendants. From the show cause order: “The Declaration (in support of the NCAA’s eligibility position) provides definitive proof that the SEC is a person ‘acting in concert or participation with’ the NCAA on eligibility issues and participated in nationwide litigation on this topic on behalf of the NCAA. Then, a few hours later, the SEC announced an intention to enforce its interconference transfer rule – a rule purely derivation of the NCAA's transfer portal rules, which had already been enjoined this Court. Specifically, the SEC rule requires players to enter the transfer portal ‘during their sport's regular transfer window’ as set by NCAA rules. Of course, this Courts in enjoining the NCAA transfer rules for the Class of 2022, there would be no reason for a player to enter the transfer portal during the ‘regular transfer portal window’ when the NCAA had declared them ineligible at that time. Rather than telling the SEC, you must obey the Court order enjoining the unfair NCAA rules that you ‘were heavily involved in’ creating, the NCAA allowed the SEC to continue its attempt to improperly circumvent this Court's order.” The preliminary injunction hearing is set for Thursday. (link)
The NCAA has also been issued a show cause to be held in contempt of court, as a result of the SEC violating the court’s order, as an entity “acting in concert and/or participation with the NCAA.” This hearing is also set for Thursday. (link)
The FBS Oversight Committee has adopted major calendar reform proposals aimed at modernizing out-of-season activities, preseason structures and transfer windows. Developed in collaboration with the AFCA and led by Georgia AD/FBS Calendar Subgroup Chair Josh Brooks, the overhaul now moves to the DI Cabinet for final approval at its Oct. 6-7 meeting in order to take effect Jan. 1, 2027. Under the proposed out-of-season model, standard spring practice and summer activity rules would be replaced by two designated practice windows allowing up to 21 total on-field practices over a maximum combined timeline of seven weeks (with neither window exceeding five weeks). Programs must also enforce a minimum of nine discretionary/voluntary weeks with no required athletic activities. Effective for the 2027 season, the preseason practice window would drop from 25 practices over 31 calendar days to 21 practices across 27 days, while the January transfer portal window would shrink from a 15- to 10-day period, starting the first business day after January 1. Also beginning in 2027, the regular season schedule will officially kick off on the Thursday of Week 0 and conclude the Saturday after Thanksgiving. More. (link)
Florida State officials took their Protect College Sports Act concerns public during this morning’s FSU Board of Trustees meeting, with Seminoles’ AD Michael Alford, Chair Peter Collins and others expressing some support for the legislation overall but adding that major amendments are still needed — specifically when it comes to the proposed cap on the size of conferences and the five-year move to independent status that would be required for schools to change leagues. More…
➤ Collins: “There’s a lot of good stuff in this bill. Especially handling the [transfer] portal. … The anti-trust exemption … is really the key, as far as I’m concerned. Because every time the NCAA does something or a conference does something, somebody files a lawsuit, they find a judge, the judge says you can’t do that … it becomes almost impossible to police. That anti-trust exemption would, on a federal level, stop a lot of that.”
➤ Officials voiced frustration about measures designed to limit schools from hopping from one major conference to another, which would obviously be a major concern for FSU, given the fact the Seminoles sued the ACC to make it easier, and more affordable, for them to leave for another league. The bigger issue could be the requirement to be independent. Collins: “I don’t really understand the government’s desire to cap conference sizes. First of all, it’s an odd number. If you do an odd number, it makes it very hard to schedule teams. … You may not play somebody in your conference except every four years. … Nobody’s gonna schedule Florida State in their non-conference [for football]. Most of them are going to nine conference games, so that gives you three non-conference games. Not a lot of people are going to want to come to Tallahassee to play a non-conference game against Florida State.” (link)
➤ Alford says the Seminoles have sold 27,838 football season tickets so far for the 2026 campaign, about 3K less than where they finished last year. (link)
Colorado AD Fernando Lovo faces a high-stakes financial puzzle, having inherited a $27M projected FY26 deficit that was mostly blamed on revenue-sharing requirements from the House settlement. To navigate the department's fiscal gap, Lovo is executing a three-part revenue generation strategy centered on corporate partnerships, record fundraising and enhanced fan experience. CU recently secured a logo deal with Progressive for Folsom Field and will also receive roughly $1M annually from the Big 12’s agreement with Monster Energy. The Buffaloes have also expanded their NIL facilitation pipeline through Learfield and achieved a department-record $37.7M in total donations during FY26. As for the third part of his strategy, heading into the football season, Lovo is unveiling efforts that include revamping Folsom Field’s in-game programming and instituting a free tailgating event outside the stadium. Lovo: “We’ve got to create an environment, both outside of the stadium, that encourages folks to come here and join and come … then when you get in the stadium, the in-game experience has to be great.” (link)
Last night’s Spikes Under the Lights four-team exhibition event at AT&T Stadium set an indoor volleyball attendance record (40K fans), while staking its claim as the sport's late-summer tentpole event. Per SBJ’s Irving Mejia-Hilario, in-use premium areas, merchandise lines stretching through the concourse and a spotlight over the court that granted the event the feel of something considerably bigger than a preseason volleyball tournament were exactly the point for organizers GSE Worldwide and Full Day Productions in putting on the occasion to take advantage of the sport’s growing popularity and the dearth of must-see programming this time of year. GSE Productions EVP Jon Venison: “The intention is to make this the Super Bowl of the sport. Anyone who’s looking at today’s sports landscape needs to look at what they’re competing against. It’s very hard to find a window that you can actually own, and we think this is a potential for that.” GSE and Full Day are already committed to bringing Spikes Under the Lights back in 2027. Though they have not committed to returning to AT&T Stadium, Venison noted next year’s event will be held either at an NFL stadium or a large college facility. (link)
Tennessee’s The Volunteer Club collective is collaborating with Spyre Sports Group to expand its business model by launching a “first-of-its-kind,” nearly 800-square-foot brick-and-mortar merchandise store in Knoxville. Set to open ahead of the Vols' home opener, the venue will sell a mix of limited-edition apparel and memorabilia and offer exclusive player meet-and-greets for members subscribed through the collective's monthly tiers, ranging from $35 to $500 per month. Spyre Sports partner Brandon Spurlock: "We knew we could get a lot of people to do a little bit. We listened to the market. We started a membership subscription. We did a tailgate. We started selling merchandise which led to the store. Now, we're looking at our ecosystem to see how people cross-pollinate across everything we're doing." Co-Founder Hunter Baddour adds: "It may remain the wild, wild west for another three years, another five years, but we don't want to find ourselves in the situation Blockbuster found themselves in, where they ignored market trends and all of a sudden they're out of business. That's why we're constantly looking at what we're doing internally and trying to find different revenue streams. When the day comes that there are guardrails, we still have a profitable business." ➤ The ACC is expanding its enhanced replay process, providing viewers with an inside look at the full discussions and debates conducted in the league’s Charlotte replay center for significantly more games during the 2026 campaign. After an initial year that saw the ACC broadcast 27 total contests with the enhanced replay usage, ESPN’s David Hale reports the conference will have 27 enhanced replay games over just the first three weeks of the upcoming season. Commissioner Jim Phillips: “Innovation remains a hallmark of the ACC. … We will continue investing in technology that strengthen competitive integrity, improve operations and enhance the student-athlete and fan experience." The league also plans to add four new cameras in the game-day operations center to allow for more "over the shoulder" visibility of what replay center officials are seeing. (link)
➤ The ACC Network has collaborated with creative agency Shadow Lion to officially launch ‘This Is Our House,’ a new brand platform set to include a network-wide brand anthem, sport-driven creative, school-specific executions and programming-focused spots to highlight the schools, sports, traditions, rivalries and stories that connect league fans throughout the 2026-27 academic year. (link)
➤ The league has also inked a new multi-year deal to have the Department of the Air Force serve as presenting sponsor of “ACC Huddle” Saturday programming on ACC Network, per SBJ’s Austin Karp. (link)
In their latest Candid Coaches feature, CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander surveyed nearly 100 Division I men's basketball coaches, inquiring if they’d ever seriously wondered (or known) if one of their players was compromised because of gambling. Overall, 73% of the respondents answered no, with one anonymous coach putting it succinctly: “No, but I probably should have.” More key insights…
➤ Parrish and Norlander’s main takeaway – almost 25% of coaches having seriously wondered if at least one of their players has been on the take is “an ALARMING ratio, and an honest return on something that should capture the attention of everyone across college basketball.” Approximately a dozen coaches the authors spoke with also “brought up something that's simultaneously obvious and yet still under-discussed: Eliminating the possibility of players fixing games or artificially adjusting their own stat lines to clear a bet needs to consistently be at the top of the priority list in college athletics. … If a sport does not carry true credibility of its competitions, then it has nothing. If the games are proven or presumed to be compromised due to crooked participants, everything falls apart.”
➤ “I'm cognizant of it, very cognizant of it, and if I thought it was going on, I would turn the player in. I think this should be on the top of the list of what we're concerned about. Guys who get caught speeding, it's not the only time they've ever sped. All this stuff's going on. If you add it up with the NBA and college the past two years, there's a lot of instances. So there's probably more that weren't reported."
➤ “Never in the moment. After the fact, once the Temple allegations from a few years ago surfaced, it was a retroactive wondering of what games were actually compromised. Being in the same league at the time and having conference tournament seedings based on those outcomes over the course of that season — and with careers being tied to results — makes for a lot of unanswered questions. Were they trying to win when we played them? Would they have been seeded that way in the conference tournament if they would have tried to win every game? Wild stuff." (link)
The Big Ten announces updates to the Football Availability Reporting Process for the upcoming 2026 season. Specifically, schools will submit four availability reports per week, beginning three days before a contest and concluding with a gameday report. Midweek status designations will identify student-athletes as Probable, Questionable, Doubtful, Out or Out (1st Half). Gameday availability reports will include three categories: Game Time Decision, Out, and Out (1st Half) on gameday. Student-athletes not listed on a report are considered Available. (link)
Sacramento State President Dr. Luke Wood announces plans to add a “brand new track immediately after football season,” with completion expected prior to the spring’s track events. Wood adds: “We will share more on cost, location, track type, coloring in a couple months.” (link, link)
Florida Men’s Basketball HC Todd Golden has agreed to a new six-year contract, per CBS’ Jon Rothstein, who notes the “deal will keep Golden … among the highest paid coaches in college basketball.” (link); Swamp247’s Graham Hall shares the particulars: “The six-year, $49.5M deal will pay him $7.5M starting with the 2026-27 season and will increase by $300K annually, reaching $9M in the final year of the deal, making Golden the highest-paid head coach in Florida's men's basketball program's history. Notably, Golden's buyout if he were to leave for another collegiate program increases back to $16M from $11M until March 31, 2027. The buyout for Golden to leave for the NBA is $3M until March 31, 2027, before dropping to $2M for each of the ensuing two seasons. And, in an interesting addition, the contract extension includes ties to Florida's athletic director, Scott Stricklin. If Stricklin is no longer the athletic director at Florida, Golden's buyout is reduced to $5M the next two seasons from $16M and $13M, respectively, and his NBA buyout will be $0 for the remainder of the contract.” (link)
