Today’s scheduled court hearing between the SEC and LSU has been continued and will be scheduled at a later date, per CBS Sports’ John Talty. Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger adds: “The hearing's continuance not only follows LSU's decision to finalize its football roster without pro players, but LSU President Wade Rousse and [SEC Commissioner] Greg Sankey held positive calls recently as the school makes efforts to de-escalate the situation. LSU expressed its intention to abide by SEC policy and finalized its football roster in an effort to prevent the addition of pro players. Some issues remain, including with the program's basketball roster, where RJ Luis - he played in three NBA games - is committed.” (link, link)
In an email to SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, LSU President Wade Rousse confirmed the school does not plan to roster pro football players as the roster is finalized and locked, per Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger. Rousse: “LSU complied with SEC rules. The issue is moot.” (link)
The SEC Presidents will no longer vote on expelling LSU from the league, as the item has been removed from tomorrow’s meeting agenda, per Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger. (link)
The College Sports Commission’s latest NIL Go Data Report from July 1 through August 31 shows 12,283 deals were cleared for a total value of $227.25M, while 484 deals weren’t cleared at a value of $67.08M. Of those totals, $188.64M (83%) from 7,089 cleared deals came from associated entities, while $38.61M (57%) from 5,194 deals came from non-associated entities. The CSC does note that “in instances where a deal would comply with NCAA bylaws even if the entity were to be designated as Associated, the CSC often will clear the deal without engaging in any inquiry about Associated status and without changing the entity’s designation in NIL Go, for the sake of efficiency. In other words, some portion of the deals identified here in this ‘Non-Associated’ column likely belong in the ‘Associated’ column.” Over the reported span, the CSC actioned an average of more than 200 NIL deals per day, up from 94 NIL deals per day during the initial year of the CSC’s existence (June 2025-June 2026). In addition, 68% of actioned deals were resolved within seven days following the population of all required fields in NIL Go. Full report. (link)
Fox Sports’ Ben Portnoy reports the College Football Playoff is “in the active process of creating policies around corporate jersey patches and their place in the playoff amid broader conversations about the organization's future structure.” The jersey patch situation has had ripe conversation around two key components: how to address partnerships that might overlap with CFP sponsors; and whether ESPN will have any involvement in the integration of the patches. Portnoy: “Notre Dame is likely the most logical school to face such a conversation in a college football context, given SoFi is a direct competitor of Capital One, one of the CFP’s corporate partners. It’s possible, though certainly not finalized, the Fighting Irish wouldn't be able to wear their corporate patch given the exclusivity Capital One has purchased in that advertising category. … Those schools that have corporate partners that don’t overlap with the CFP might also face their own fees related to integrating their season-long patches. It's likely activation fees that fluctuate in value depending on the round of the playoff that would be paid to ESPN would be included in any formalized policy.” (link)
With the Senate set to return to Washington for a three-week legislation window before departing until November, Politico’s Calen Razo, Kelsey Brugger and Jacob Wendler observe that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is about to step into a political minefield with the body preparing to take up the Protect College Sports Act as soon as next week – with perhaps as many reasons for his caucus to oppose it as support it. Schumer will need to decide if he wants to steer his members toward helping Republicans reach the 60-vote threshold. One Democratic Senate aide with knowledge of the negotiations believes there’s enough party opposition to tank the measure on the floor as a coalition of labor rights groups and the Congressional Black Caucus warn the bill is exploitative. “A good number of Democratic offices aren’t eager to tick off the AFL-CIO and NAACP, screw over college athletes and deliver Trump and Senate Republicans a major political win weeks before midterms. Bad policy. Terrible politics.” (link)
The UCF-South Florida “War on I-4” football series might be dead for good, barring a change in scheduling philosophy from either side, per On3’s Brett McMurphy, who notes the Knights won’t play a home-and-home series against a Group of 6 team and the Bulls won’t play at UCF without a return game in Tampa, so for now, the former league rivals are at an impasse. Here’s what the ADs have to say…
➤ UCF AD Terry Mohajir says the Knights’ financial model requires one P4 non-conference opponent alongside two non-P4 home games and the nine Big 12 games to guarantee seven home dates annually. “This has nothing to do with us snubbing our nose at another team in the state. It all has to do with our financial model. … I wish we could play a game, but it has to work financially.” Mohajir mentioned there’s one way the teams could restart their home/home series. “When USF gets into an autonomy conference it will be easier. That’s my game and I’d never have to leave the state to fulfill (the Big 12’s) Power 4 non-conference requirement. We’ll play USF every year.”
➤ South Florida AD Rob Higgins says dissolving the rivalry costs both schools financially: “We’re both leaving a tremendous amount of money and media value on the table, which is a shame especially in the current landscape. … Both schools’ fan bases, budgets and brands deserve a consistent annual series. It’s definitely possible, even with current conference scheduling principles in play, but it has to start with a willingness to be creative, to collaborate and to compete. It appears that only one of the two parties is willing to do any of those three things.” (link)
Prairie View A&M AD Anton Goff appeared on HBCU Coaches Corner to discuss program alignment with Football HC Tremaine Jackson, capital investments, brand growth strategies, revenue generation through modern media distribution and more. Here are some takeaways…
➤ On capital investments in athletic facilities and corporate partnerships: "We just put a brand new $1M-plus turf down on the field. Instead of the rubber chunks, we put wood chip fill in there so we can practice more. … Video board last year. … We're going to continue to grow the brand and continue to invest more in our program as we’re successful. ... I'm going to bring in more corporate sponsors. I'm looking at trying to get somebody to name our stadium. Our facilities are great, but almost all of them are called Panther this, Panther Stadium, Panther Baseball Field, Panther Soccer Field, all that stuff. So, I'm looking at trying to do some things with our third-party naming rights people."
➤ As for expanding the university's geographic brand and media reach: "Growing the brand is huge for me. Everybody knows Prairie View in the Houston area, most of Texas, some other Southwest states, but I took us to Michigan State to play [football] because I wanted our brand to grow in that Chicago area, in the Michigan area. I took our baseball team to play at Wrigley Field, because I wanted our brand to grow in the Midwest. I want our brand to be nationwide. ... In order to do that, you’ve got to have a media team, you’ve got to have success, and you’ve got to be able to talk about your success and your story." (link)
ESPN plans to extend its “Women’s Sports Sundays” initiative into the fall by adding college volleyball (10 matches), college basketball, WTGL [the new tech driven women’s golf league] and MVPW boxing. The 11-week slate kicks off this Sunday with a volleyball doubleheader, including the championship round of the Paradise Invitational and a UCLA-Utah match. While the summer series’ goal wasn’t to reach ESPN’s 2025 “Sunday Night Baseball” average viewership mark of 1.83M, some WNBA games within “Women’s Sports Sunday” approached that figure with a July 5 Indiana Fever-Las Vegas Aces matchup and an August 16 Portland Fire-Phoenix Mercury contest drawing 1.6M and 1.4M viewers, respectively. The four NWSL matches shown over the summer through the initiative averaged 255K viewers, which was 106% better than the league’s 2025 regular-season average on ESPN. More, including the fall lineup. Rutgers Men’s Basketball HC Steve Pikiell has released a letter sharing the unfortunate news of his recent cancer diagnosis. From the statement, in part: “A couple of months ago, after not feeling 100%, I visited a team of doctors at RWJBarnabas Health. After undergoing various tests, I received the difficult news that I have cancer. … After a successful surgery, my doctors and I have a kick-ass game plan to finish treatment. I will still be involved with the team to the best of my ability as I navigate the challenges of the season through treatment. I have great confidence in [AHC Brandin] Knight, the rest of the talented staff, and our exceptional student-athletes. I know they will do an amazing job leading our program when I'm not able to. Just as I ask my team to fight and embrace challenges head-on, I'm going to attack cancer the same way. With the support of my doctors, my family, and now Rutgers Nation, I am confident we will be victorious.” (link)

LSU has locked its football roster without adding former NFL players Dae'Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris. Yahoo’s Teddy Ricketson notes that “at this time, it has not been reported whether Thursday's scheduled meeting to ‘decide whether to terminate [LSU] as an SEC member institution’ has been canceled or if it will still be held.” In light of the news, Louisiana plaintiffs attorney Ryan Downton says "players are reviewing legal options." Tigers HC Lane Kiffin: "That wasn't easy. As much as I feel for the players, and I believe that you fight for what you believe in, and I believe that, you know, these kids have an opportunity to play, just like all of the other kids around the country that are winning court cases and being put on rosters. But at the same time, I'm the head coach at LSU and I had to make a decision that is for the big picture of LSU and the LSU football program, with the uncertainties of what potentially could've come by adding them to the roster." (link, link)
Meanwhile, SEC presidents and chancellors are still scheduled to vote Thursday on whether to expel LSU from the conference, according to Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger. As noted, the Tigers locked their 105-man football roster late Tuesday without adding the pro players, and Dellenger asks: “But will the SEC really do it? Will the SEC kick out of the league, in the middle of football season, one of its biggest brands in the sport? Will the league boot a football program that's won three national championships since 2003, a baseball team that claimed titles in two of the last four seasons, and women's basketball and gymnastics teams that won it all in 2023 and 2024, respectively? In all, the university has claimed 53 team national titles. Surely, the conference would not hit the eject button on this, right?” One conference administrator confirms to Dellenger that “this is real.” An SEC president adds: “It is time for everyone to follow SEC rules.” Meanwhile, U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) criticized the conference, noting: "The SEC is threatening LSU while the same conference allows athletes who spent YEARS competing professionally in foreign leagues to play immediately." (link)
NCAA Secretary-Rules Editor Matt Young is sending the following message to members regarding official game timing protocol: “Recognizing that replay technology and available broadcast resources may vary among institutions, conferences, and game sites, it is necessary to establish a standard timing protocol that ensures consistency in the administration of all college football games. The official time for all college football games is the time displayed on the in-stadium game clock. If the stadium clock becomes inoperable, the official time will be maintained on the field by a designated game official. When a replay review requires time to be restored or otherwise adjusted, the replay official's decision will be based on the embedded game clock contained within the program feed. If the broadcaster is unable to provide an embedded game clock, the replay official will use the game-clock graphic displayed as part of the broadcast feed. Moving forward, this timing protocol should be followed consistently at all institutions and game sites. (link)
The Big Ten released a statement in regards to the Michigan-Western Michigan ending: “The Big Ten stands by the statement released following the conclusion of the Western Michigan at Michigan game and the determination made by the replay officials. We will have no further comment on the matter.” (link)
Politico reporter Jacob Wendler via X: “[New York] Yankees President Randy Levine tells me he's feeling ‘good’ about the upcoming floor vote for [Protect College Sports Act], but he's ‘not overconfident’: ‘The game's not over till the scoreboard rings. The bill's not perfect,’ adding that it addresses around 80% of his concerns, but he says ‘it's a lot better than where we are.’ On the bill's critics: ‘There are reasons that people want to kill this bill for sure, and they're using excuses. There are people on the right who continue to try and muddle the water, saying that this bill will, in effect, overrule state laws that prohibit men from playing in women's sports, and that's just not true.’” (link)

Campbell President Dr. William Downs sat down with CSA Search and Consulting President Drew Turner to discuss the launch of the university's national search for its next AD, aligning athletics with the school’s strategic plan, competing in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) and more. Here’s what you need to know…
➤ Candidate experience profiles: "I'd like to see that experience at our level, at a peer institution or an aspirant peer institution. I think somebody who has not had that experience might get eaten alive. And then somebody on the other end of the spectrum, somebody who comes in from a P4, who's been a number two or a number three who might come to a place like Campbell with perhaps a savior complex and say, 'look, you guys don't have the resources.' And so there's instant frustration. We want to avoid that frustration. So. I think peers and aspirant peers with some experience would be a perfect match.”
➤ "The [AD], the [VP for Athletics] at Campbell University will be a member of my cabinet, the leadership team. Athletics touches everything at our university. And even if it doesn't touch it, that person is part of the team and is part of our decision-making process. No silos, no islands, no us versus them. I need somebody who is the consummate team player. I need accountability. I need transparency. I need a great communicator. … We have a voracious appetite for winning, just like everybody else, a voracious appetite for winning, but let's make it fun.”
➤ “We have 550 student-athletes right now. We have not fully maxed out our NCAA rosters, so there's still some room to grow under those caps. More importantly, successful athletic programs can excite non-athletes to choose your school. … We are in the NIL space. We know to be competitive, you have to be. ... In my view, we're looking to build successful athletic programs and we're not just looking to build temporary shells for rosters that attract mercenary student-athletes who chase a bag and leave after a single season.” (link)
Syracuse AD Bryan Blair joined host Dr. Rob Clark on the Competitive Kindness podcast to discuss leading a legacy brand, balancing accountability with authentic relationship building, the importance of decisive leadership and more. D1.takeaways…
➤ On restoring Syracuse Athletics' national prominence: "This is one of the last sleeping giants in college athletics. I think we've got one of the biggest, best brands. ... I would argue our ceiling and trying to get back to where historically we've experienced is incredibly high. We've been to and won national championships. I would say we're a basketball blue blood, but we're a basketball blue blood that hasn't made the tournament in five years if we're being realistic about where we sit. ... I'm just trying to get [people] to rethink and reimagine those feelings and memories you already had and say, 'hey, how do we do that but on a consistent basis?'"
➤ JMA Wireless Dome as a competitive advantage: "The dome is one of the, I called it the eighth wonder of the world earlier today. I mean, you can have 35K for a college basketball game. Nobody in the country is doing that on a regular basis. And then you flip that same atmosphere, host nation-leading lacrosse on both the men's and women's side, and then you get 45K, 50K for a football game and it's an indoor environment. ... You combine all of those factors with being in central New York, four hours away from New York City, which is our largest alumni base, the media and business capital of the world, all of that combined just creates a platform that allows us to do something really unique."
➤ Maintaining authenticity amidst the transactional nature of modern college athletics: "To coach and recruit for certain people, you got to pour your whole heart in that relationship. You got to give that young person everything you got. But when you have that happen and then they up and leave you at the end of the year for a couple of dollars, you can become really jaded or guarded. ... To get that job or to coach that student-athlete or lead in that way, you got to be authentic and you got to be all in or self-feeling or you'll never be the best version of yourself.” (link)
Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard and Tracks to Success podcast host Kraig Kann discuss leveraging marquee matchups to drive early season ticket growth: "I remember when we said for the Iowa game, you couldn't go to the Iowa game unless you bought a season ticket. There would be no single game sales and people initially had a meltdown like no one's going to be at that game. Well, we sold it out and so we went from in our first year in 2005, we had 22K season ticket holders. We now have 47K." More from Pollard, including how he’s gaining commercial real estate experience through the Cy-Town project: "I've learned so much from Cy-Town that's not a normal athletic director's responsibility. It is a university project, but the president gave it to the athletics director to lead and manage and run because of our entrepreneurial tendencies in college athletics. And so I've learned so much about development and third-party transactions, dealing with developers, contractors, real estate." (link)
The DI Men’s Ice Hockey Committee is evaluating a proposal from the Big Ten to increase the roster limit under the House settlement from 26 to 28 student-athletes. The NCAA Ice Hockey Rules Subcommittee decided to not approve a rule change that would change the rules around commercial trademarks or logos on uniforms or equipment, which will be under review by the DI Cabinet. Effective on September 1, Michigan Sport Administrator Josh Richelew will chair the Men’s Hockey Oversight Committee and Holy Cross HC Bill Riga will serve as vice chair. (link)
West Virginia has leveraged a $5M investment in baseball to construct a biomechanics performance center that not only helped propel the program to its first College World Series berth in 2026, it’s also drawn interest from MLB stars like Paul Skenes, James Wood, and Trey Lipscomb. The facility features doppler radars, motion-tracking cameras, and force plates to measure kinetic load, joint pressure, and release mechanics during pitches and swings. Analysts use those metrics to recommend physical adjustments that redirect energy away from vulnerable joints, increasing velocity while mitigating injury risks like Tommy John surgery. Mountaineers HC Steve Sabins pitched the lab as both a marketing tool and an academic partnership, and lead biochemist Courtney Semkewyc and School of Sport Sciences Director Dana Voelker structured the center so undergraduate students can analyze the data to optimize player mechanics and lower injury risks. Sabins explained how processing data sets the facility apart from rival programs: "Everyone can present data; not nearly as many people can tell you what it means. And we translate it for players better than anyone else. We have mad scientists." (link)
Sportico reports that Kalshi removed betting markets tied to athlete injury durations from its app on Tuesday. The prediction market company’s federal regulator, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), asked it to do so. “Kalshi has not said how it will resolve the injury markets it took down from its app that were already live. Precedent suggests the markets will pay out based on ‘fair market value,’ meaning the latest odds before the markets disappeared, though the company did not confirm this when Sportico reached out.” (link)
