“Looking back, I would have established a general manager-type position earlier. … We are trying to build an Arkansas football program that can compete year after year, not chase one season.”
Hunter Yurachek
Arkansas AD to On3’s Brett McMurphy on the modernized football front-office model in Fayetteville

House Republicans currently have no plans to return to D.C. prior to the mid-term elections to take up a permitting bill should one pass the Senate, per Punchbowl News’ Jake Sherman. “They don't see it as a viable option to bring the chamber back at this point in the cycle. House Rs would be also wary of rubberstamping a Senate permitting bill. And with a three-vote margin, it would be very difficult to get it through. Plus, attendance issues. Could things change? Sure. But at this point, they are extraordinarily bearish about coming back.” (link)
U.S. Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) has filed an amendment to the Protect College Sports Act that would cap coaching salaries at $5M a year. Noting it’s one of 35-plus amendments filed to the bill, Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger adds: “Most of them have little chance of being accepted.” (link)
Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek addressed fan frustration and defended the department's newly modernized football front-office model in a conversation with On3’s Brett McMurphy, believing that he should have started sooner on rebuilding the program’s machinery prior to the arrival of Ryan Silverfield. “Are we where we want to be? Absolutely not. I’m not going to make excuses for that.” More takeaways…
➤ Yurachek adds: “Looking back, I would have established a general manager-type position earlier. College football changed incredibly quickly with NIL, the transfer portal and now revenue sharing. We were asking the head coach and his staff to manage responsibilities that increasingly require an entirely different level of specialization … We are trying to build an Arkansas football program that can compete year after year, not chase one season. The (ultimate) goal is to give our coaches better information, better support and a much stronger system for building and retaining talent and competing to win in the toughest conference in the country.”
➤ Despite the business side of athletics exhibiting growth with self-generated revenue up 78%, ticket sales having jumped 91% and over $235M in total fundraising over the past five years, Yurachek understands the fan frustration and the spotlight on football’s struggles. “I am frustrated as well, but at the same time, I think any fair evaluation has to include what is actually happening inside the program. That work began last year and is happening every single day. Where I think we have fallen short is making the work inside the building more visible so our fans, our community, understands the changes we’ve made, significant changes, to build a modernized, successful and sustainable program.” (link)
Alabama AD Greg Byrne visited with Front Office Sports’ Kennington Smith III to discuss pressing issues for ADs. Here are some of his most notable comments…
➤ What’s the single most crucial issue facing athletic directors today? “There’s a lot of different issues: trying to find a sustainable model as our market has changed dramatically, trying to slow down all the litigation we continue to face. … I think there are a lot of football programs now that are losing money. The expectation level is to continue to provide support to our student-athletes academically, athletically, socially, medically, nutrition at a really high level, … but then also have compensation that goes along with that. For some, it absolutely makes business sense, but for many others, it doesn’t. And so you’re starting to see the discussion at a more high level about what’s the structure going forward to give you a chance to make this work.”
➤ What's the challenge of balancing equal investment of all sports versus cutting back on certain sports to save or re-purpose money? “It’s very challenging. Our coaches, our staff, we pour our heart and soul into the young people in our program, and I just think it’s critical that we continue to have an ethical and moral responsibility to support our young people, and if we lose sight of that, then shame on us. That doesn’t mean every kid will have the perfect experience. That doesn’t happen. There will be challenges with it, but there still is a lot of good at what takes place here, and and and we can’t ever lose sight of making sure that we have the young people on the front of mind in the decisions that we’re making.” (link)
Queens Charlotte will carry forward through its merger with Elon as Queens College, with athletics set to continue competing under the Royals moniker. “The Queens name, the Royals tradition, the residential experience and the institution’s historic commitment to service will remain central to the campus’ future. A vibrant undergraduate community will remain at the heart of the campus, with students studying across the arts and sciences and professional fields, living and learning together, participating in campus traditions and competing as the Royals. Athletics will remain an important part of the undergraduate experience and Queens tradition as the broader merger advances.” (link)
An $8M advance payment from Nike is helping North Carolina cover its 2027 expenses, per WRAL News’ Brian Murphy, who notes the university invested the pre-paid funds from the final two years of its 2018 Nike agreement into a “quasi-endowment fund,” growing the principal to $14.2M. Pending UNC Board of Trustees approval, the athletic department will utilize $9M of that money to “address increasing operational demands and support the athletics financial plan” after posting a $15M deficit last year that was covered through reserves. NC State is also pursuing new revenue streams by seeking trustee approval to approve a $2M naming rights proposal for a renovated dining hall and recreation room in the Wendell H. Murphy Football Center. UNC Board of Governors Budget Committee Chair Kirk Bradley: “Athletics matter to who we are. The question this board will wrestle with is never whether athletics matter, it's how we sustain what matters on a sound financial footing.” (link)
Southern Miss extended its partnership with Forrest through Learfield’s Southern Miss Sports Properties to serve as the initial jersey patch partner of Golden Eagles football. The regional health system’s “for life” patch debuted on the program’s uniforms back during USM’s season opener against Alcorn State (Sept. 5). (link)
Hawai’i and the Bank of Hawai’i have agreed to a seven-year extension of their naming rights agreement for the Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center, ensuring the moniker will remain on the facility through June 30, 2037. The extension supports the "Our Team, Hawai'i's Team Fund,” while continuing to provide programmatic, operational, administrative and educational support to the athletics program. (link)
San José State has generated more than $5.5M in fundraising support to complete the baseball stadium transformation at Excite Ballpark, part of $19M in combined philanthropic and community support brought in by SJSU Athletics since July 1. The project is set to include a dedicated clubhouse and coaches’ offices, along with access to a new weight room and indoor and outdoor hitting and pitching tunnels. The project will also celebrate the program’s history by naming the field in honor of former HC Sam Piraro, who led the Spartans to the 2000 Men’s College World Series. (link)
Nebraska has unveiled details for a two-phase Memorial Stadium re-seat tied to a $600M renovation of the south and west bowls, per The Athletic’s Mitch Sherman. The process will happen for the 2027 season, when capacity dips to 65K, and again for 2028 and beyond as seating rebounds to 80K. The Huskers decided to discontinue its legacy priority seating program, which requires all season-ticket donors and applicants, including 24K grandfathered seats, to select new ticket locations for ‘27 and ‘28. Deputy AD/CCO Kortne Gosha. “There are going to be some that don’t like anything you say, because it’s change. And there’s going to be a lot that see the upside and the opportunity, (when) they get in this thing and experience how efficient it is, how their experience dramatically changes.” NU doesn’t expect to displace any season-ticket holders and in two years, when the project is done, the get-in price for a season ticket will drop from $420 to $299. The department also projects the venue upgrades will boost annual game-day revenue from $67M to $95M. Gosha adds: “Everybody thinks they’re getting priced out of the stadium. It’s not the case. There is something for everyone. There is an option for everyone.” (link)
Tulsa collaborates with Playfly Sports to expand its premium seating offerings in advance of 2026-27 basketball season through the addition of four luxury suites at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. The suites will contain 16 seats; a TV and an opportunity for private catering and drinks. Playfly, which has served as the Golden Hurricane’s ticket sales, service and donor-relationship management partner since 2021, will provide the upfront capital for the renovation. (link)
Central Michigan has broken ground on the university's new 40-acre, men's and women's golf practice facility, located immediately west of Theunissen Stadium. The project will provide indoor and outdoor practice facilities, including putting and short-range practice areas; multiple hitting bays with golf simulators; locker rooms; a fitness area; and other amenities. University of Illinois x Daktronics
The University of Illinois is redefining the college football game-day experience with a massive display installation at Gies Memorial Stadium. This project includes the largest video display in college football - no small task. It's a Daktronics LED board spanning more than 17,300 square feet in the south end zone. It is part of a larger network of 16 LED displays throughout the venue, totaling more than 26,750 square feet and delivering nearly 30 million pixels of digital canvas.
The main video display is nearly twice the size of the next-largest display in college sports, creating a huge canvas for live video, replays, statistics, game presentation elements and fan engagement moments. Debuting for the 2026 season, the new technology enhances every aspect of the in-stadium experience, helping immerse fans in the action while providing the flexibility to create memorable moments on game day. From pregame introductions to big plays on the field, Illinois now has the visual platform to engage and energize Illini fans like never before.

Here’s the latest on the Protect College Sports Act…
➤ From the Senate Press Gallery: “By a vote of 70-21, the Senate invoked cloture on the Cruz-Cantwell substitute amendment #6776, to S. 4668. Senators not voting: Cassidy, Coons, Gallego, Kim, Murphy, Schatz, Tillis, Tuberville, and Whitehouse. Senators voting no: Alsobrooks, Blumenthal, Blunt Rochester, Booker, Duckworth, Durbin, Gillibrand, Kaine, Kelly, Markey, Merkley, Moody (R), Paul (R), Reed, Sanders, Schiff, Schumer, Scott-FL (R), Van Hollen, Warnock, and Warren.” (link)
➤ Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich notes Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) flipped his note from yes to no on advancing the bill. (link)
➤ From Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger: “Sen. Maria Cantwell, speaking on the US Senate floor, says more than 35 amendments have been filed on the Protect College Sports Act and lawmakers will “continue to work with our colleagues on” possible revisions. The third procedural vote on the PCSA is expected soon. … Earlier today, Senate leaders sent to Republicans a request for unanimous consent to expedite a final vote on the PCSA and bypass procedural steps/time constraints. It failed (expected). There will likely be more attempts made over the coming days to bypass the constraints. Changes made last week to bill language (expansion provision, etc.) come with additional procedural voting steps, extending the timeline for a final vote to the end of this week (when most expect it) or even early next week. Without consent to waive procedural steps/time constraints, a (1) mandatory 30-hour wait follows [last night’s] vote; then (2) there is another procedural vote; then (3) a vote on cloture of the bill; then (4) more mandatory wait time; and then (5) a final vote. Brace yourselves.” (link)
➤ Here is a full list of the proposed amendments. There are now 36 in all. (link)
The Pac-12 is being removed as a defendant from the Patterson v. NCAA antitrust lawsuit that challenges the five-year eligibility rule. JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher notes that plaintiffs’ attorneys initially grouped the conference alongside the SEC, Big Ten, ACC, and Big 12 as part of the Power Five and adds: "The legacy Pac-12 was named in the early lawsuits, justifiably so. But this new iteration of the Pac-12 is only 16.7% (2/12ths) of what it once was. ... The SEC and Big Ten are different animals. Those two conferences collect 58% of the College Football Playoff revenue. They command and enjoy an outsized share of the overall college athletics TV revenue. I keep thinking that the lawyers will eventually figure out they should be suing those two giant conferences and using the others as expert witnesses." (link)
Wake Forest is nearing the halfway point of the first phase of its 100-acre sports-adjacent mixed-use real estate project, The Grounds. Development partners Carter and Front Street Capital will operate a retail village on a ground lease from the university, which currently attracts 1.1M annual visitors to its athletics complex encompassing the football stadium, arena, baseball stadium, and tennis center, according to SBJ’s Bret McCormick, who notes the initial phase features a five-story office building for university employees, an apartment complex and a revitalized Silas Creek greenway. Deacs’ AD John Currie on the primary goal driving the project: "Let’s figure out how we can serve our community better and how we can serve the university better and how we can create jobs and how we can create tax revenue for the community and how we can create a better place for people to go and quality of life and attraction. And so money results from all that, but the ‘why’ part is not just for money. I’m as capitalist as anybody, but the ‘why’ part is really how do we serve our community better?" The article includes updated photos and video of the progress in Winston-Salem. (link)
Learfield CEO Cole Gahagan explains to Sportico’s Justin Birnbaum that having a single private equity owner allows the company to be “a bit more efficient in the boardroom. … TPG as the majority owner really helps to make things a bit more efficient in strategy and planning and decision-making, so I think that’s the biggest thing that’s different and advantageous now relative to where we’ve been in the past.” (link)
Nebraska AD Troy Dannen on his monthly radio show talked about the department's goal of reaching the top third of the Big Ten in roster spending across sports while generating internal revenue to support national championship contention. D1.takeaways…
➤ "If we’re in the top third, I believe we can coach and get our way to the top. You don’t have to spend the most to win the most but if you’re in the ballpark, I feel like we have the facilities and the fans and the coaches — everything that’s necessary to get more bang for your buck than other schools can get."
➤ On preserving accessible seating options during stadium renovations: "Frankly, it may be less expensive for some people for their seats next year than it even was this year, or in ’28 than it even was this year. But making sure the accessibility that exists today doesn’t change."
➤ Per the Omaha World-Herald’s Evan Bland, Dannen “said he’s not optimistic the Protect College Sports Act will pass through the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives by the time the next open transfer portal window arrives this winter, if at all. If it doesn’t, the status quo is ‘probably not the best option.’” (link)
Kentucky football season ticket sales increased roughly 3% YoY to 39,413 for HC Will Stein's first season. Despite the 1,116-ticket bump, the Lexington Herald-Leader's Jon Hale notes the total remains below the 40K-ticket threshold achieved in 2023 and 2024 under former HC Mark Stoops. Hale also points out UK maintained base ticket prices, but eliminated early renewal discounts and raised K Fund donation requirements for premium seating. With the SEC transitioning to a nine-game schedule that removes one home game in even-numbered years, Wildcats AD J Batt says he’s focused on enhancing the environment at Kroger Field to maximize home game attendance: "This is part of the listening and learning portion of the program. There’s certainly pieces of it, best practices that I bring from having been to a lot of different games at a lot of different stadiums all over the country. " (link)
Beemok Sports & Entertainment will host two outdoor college basketball events in tennis facilities this fall, beginning with the LinkU Invitational at Credit One Stadium in Charleston on September 27 and the CareSource Invitational at the Cincinnati Open site on October 7. SBJ's Irving Mejia-Hilario explains that to mitigate weather risks, organizers established indoor contingencies, limiting initial Charleston ticket sales to match the 4,500-to-5,000-seat capacity of backup venue TD Arena, while the Ohio event is using the 11K-seat Dayton Arena as a fallback. Beemok President Bob Moran says the Charleston event's 16 courtside suites sold out, and the Cincinnati event reached 88% capacity with suites 60% sold. Moran adds: "This is a year of testing. We measure our success in the experience that our fans have and the teams are going to have. We’re going to measure our success on hosting successful events where our fans are just having a great time and experiencing something they’ve never done before." (link)
We offer our deepest condolences to the ESPN community and the friends and family of college basketball analyst Chris Spatola, who passed away on Monday. (link)
ABC and ESPN swept the top five college football audiences of the weekend, led by LSU and Ole Miss drawing 10.9M viewers on ABC, according to Sports Media Watch's Jon Lewis. The matchup peaked at 13.7M viewers to rank as the second-most watched game of the season. The weather-delayed Florida State and Alabama broadcast delivered the weekend's second-largest audience with 7.01M viewers on ABC, while the conclusion shifted to ESPN2 and averaged 1.43M. Kentucky's victory over Texas A&M placed third, averaging 5.36M viewers across a full ESPN telecast and partial ABC simulcast. The noon window featured Georgia and Arkansas averaging 4.18M on ABC, followed by North Carolina and Clemson pulling 3.59M on ESPN. Fox secured its top audience on Friday night, averaging 3.03M viewers for Houston and Texas Tech, which surpassed ESPN's competing 2.34M for Miami (FL) and Wake Forest. (link); Full rundown. (link)
Ole Miss sold more than $900K in alcohol at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium during the Rebels’ win over LSU, according to Talk of Champions’ Brad Logan. (link)
With Total Mortgage Arena in Bridgeport, Conn., currently undergoing renovations and unable to host, the Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Oversight Committee has worked with local host Sacred Heart and facility management to move the 2027 NCAA Bridgeport Regional to the PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford, Conn., from March 25-28. (link)
The Kansas City Chiefs’ (NFL) Arrowhead Stadium is scheduled to host the Nebraska-Miami (OH) match-up to kickoff both teams’ 2027 college football slate, per SBJ’s Ben Fischer, who notes the game, originally slated for September 11 in Lincoln, was moved up to August 27 after the NCAA Football Bowl Division Oversight Committee began allowing schools to schedule games on Week 0. The Chiefs, who believe the current upheaval in collegiate sports is opening up new opportunities to host more frequent neutral-site games, are currently in talks with potential sponsors for the match-up. The facility last held a college game in 2025, when Cincinnati hosted Nebraska in the Battle Sports Kansas City Classic. (link)
