Miami (FL) recently summoned three AD candidates for in-person meetings, per the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, who notes Executive VP for University Operations and External Affairs Rudy Fernandez and Miami Board of Trustees Chair Manny Kadre have been heavily involved in the process. Finalists will likely interview with UM President Joe Echevarria, but nothing is imminent over the next few days. Jackson adds: “In this new NIL era, UM continues to seek a non-traditional hire as opposed to a current college AD. The negative reaction to former [Florida] Panthers President Michael Yormark appears to have torpedoed his chances; he was a favorite before his name leaked many, many months ago.” (link)
NCAA Lead Outside Counsel Rakesh Kilaru visited with Tulane Sports Law Program Director Gabe Feldman on the SportsWise podcast. Here are some key takeaways…
➤ On why early antitrust challenges lost momentum in federal appellate courts: “Antitrust cases have evidentiary requirements and the plaintiffs really were not meeting those. ... There's this old line, it's a standard line of antitrust law, but antitrust law is about competition, not competitors. So, one competitor can't come in and say, ‘I'm being excluded from the market. I'm being harmed. That's an antitrust case.’ They have to show that something's happening market-wide. They have to show that wages are being suppressed. They have to show that there's not enough opportunities that we're holding back output or roster spots in the context of college sports.”
➤ As for the legal flaws of state-level breach of contract claims against the NCAA manual: “The theory is the NCAA manual is a contract with student-athletes. ... We don't think it's true. It's actually a membership agreement between schools and the NCAA about how they should conduct college sports from a membership organization perspective. … The theory is somehow that student-athletes who competed for four years under one version of the manual and got everything they got under that manual, that somehow the NCAA has breached their contract by having a new contract going forward, a new manual with a new rule. ... It is like going to a car dealership and buying a car, and then a month later the new model comes out and going back to the dealer and saying, 'Hey, you breached my contract. I want the new car.' ... If you have a contract and you get everything you thought you were going to get under the contract, you have received the benefits of the contract. You don't get to sue saying, ‘I want someone else's contract that I like better than mine.’" (link)
Sports business consultant/College Sports Council member Mark Ganis joined Puck Sports Media Correspondent John Ourand on The Varsity podcast to discuss federal college athletics legislation as he believes: “This desperately needs to get approved because if it does not, college sports may very well implode because of its own inabilities to be able to operate in a consistent manner with all of the great inconsistencies of court decisions being made in different jurisdictions around the country.” More from Ganis…
➤ On skyrocketing college spending draining university academic funds: “You've got the ultra important matter, which is the incredible amount of money that is being spent on college football and college basketball that is squeezing out all of the other sports, women's sports, non-revenue sports, Olympic sports. ... Many of the universities, the athletic departments, which used to make money for the academic and student affairs parts of universities are now actually draining and they have to increase student fees and take money from academics in order to be able to pay for the athletic departments. This is an untenable situation and cannot continue.”
➤ Does President Trump’s College Sports Council remain active? "It still exists. It's still vital. We had the one big meeting at the White House, but we've had many meetings via Zoom with people all around the country. … The focus right now, that all culminated in legislation that the Senate has before it, that has been endorsed by Democrats and Republicans alike.” (link)
Senate Democrats considering a bipartisan deal to pass the Protect College Sports Act find themselves in a tricky spot, per Semafor’s Burgess Everett, who notes fractures in the Democratic coalition raise questions about the legislation’s ability to clear the narrowly divided House even if it can pass the Senate. Expectations are for Senate Democrats to conduct a conversation about the bill sometime this month. Everett: “Democrats should not assume there will be another chance to address college sports next year and should weigh the bill on its merits. If the party’s senators block this bill, Republicans may not be in a mood to start from scratch in January should they lose the House or Senate. But the political calculus is complicated: [President Donald] Trump doesn’t have many bipartisan accomplishments to brag about. He soured on the housing bill before it even became law. Given his love for sports and spectacle, I would imagine he would tout this bill loudly if it passes. Democrats must decide whether that matters to them or whether Republicans would gain a real edge from the bill passing.” (link)

Bain Capital’s Private Credit Group has acted as lead lender and administrative agent for a $250M senior credit facility to Playfly Sports and Access Holdings to support Playfly’s continued growth. Bain Capital Credit VP Megan McKenzie: “Playfly has built a differentiated platform across sports media, sponsorship, and technology, helping rights holders and brands create greater value from highly engaged audiences. In a dynamic and increasingly complex sports landscape, we continue to see opportunities to invest in businesses that help bring together key participants across the industry.” (link)
Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard sat down with the Area Podcast to discuss his upcoming retirement, the development of the multi-phase CYTown mixed-use development, stadium concert economics and more. D1.takeaways…
➤ On the economic impact per stadium concert and top-line ticket revenue: “We did more ticket sales for that George Strait show, because $575 was the average ticket price, than a whole season of football. So, we can say a stadium show is like another home football game, that was almost like a whole other football season. The economic impact of one stadium show to central Iowa is in the $10M to $15M range. … We're going to do more shows. There'll be a big announcement in September about a big show for next year, which I think will probably be the biggest and best show we've ever had in Jack Trice Stadium. And then there are a couple other shows that are kind of tentatively holding dates for us in 2027. … Luke Combs, George Strait, we netted over $1M for the athletics department.”
➤ Leveraging CYTown to generate new non-tuition revenue streams for the university: “CYTown is a university project. … This is an opportunity for the university to diversify. If the university wants to be successful going forward, it can't just be tuition, fundraising, and research dollars, they've got to find other ways to generate revenues. And CYTown is an amazing opportunity for them. … [The new McFarland Clinic] brings almost a thousand unique patrons on a daily basis, between 150 employees and almost 750 to 800 appointments a day, Monday through Friday. That's a thousand people coming to that space that aren't coming there today.” (link)
Sponsorship deals with Duke, North Carolina and Oregon will see Edward Jones pay Learfield a combined total of almost $34M over a four-year term, per On SI’s Bri Amaranthus, who notes the agreements cover Duke and UNC men’s and women’s basketball and UO football, men’s and women’s basketball and Olympic sports. As part of its pact, Oregon will place the financial services company’s logo on each of Autzen Stadium’s 25-yard lines this season, according to SBJ’s Irving Mejia-Hilario, who notes Edward Jones will also have in-stadium signage, videoboard spots, PA mentions and rally towels for the home opener. In addition, the facility’s suite level will carry the company’s name, among other activations. The entire package will provide the company with a collection of promotional and sponsorship benefits, including use of university trademarks and logos; financial-literacy event opportunities; certain student-athlete NIL activation rights; and more. UMass inks an expanded, multi-year partnership with Baystate Health to feature the healthcare system’s logo on both 25-yard lines at McGuirk Alumni Stadium, starting with the 2026 football campaign. Learfield’s UMass Sports Properties collaborated on the deal. (link)

Saturday’s Nebraska-UNLV contest scored 430K viewers on FS1, rating as the network’s most watched volleyball broadcast on record and up 214% over FS1’s 2025 average viewership for the sport. (link)

The SEC Executive Committee will enforce conference regulations barring former NFL players from returning to college despite ongoing eligibility litigation involving LSU, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel. Tennessee Chancellor/SEC Executive Committee Chair Donde Plowman confirmed conference presidents voted to empower Commissioner Greg Sankey with the ability to impose penalties on non-compliant programs, including half-season head coach suspensions and the forfeiture of 50% of a sport's annual budget. Georgia President Jere Morehead added that maintaining eligibility standards serves as a critical test of the 16-member league's authority to self-govern. Plowman: "We have a responsibility to try and lead the best we can in this time of chaos. Our group is united on this. This is not a rule we will budge on. … It's not a new rule. We didn't just cook up a rule. ... We are a voluntary membership organization, and we have a right to set and enforce our rules. ... This is about -- if you signed a contract, you signed a contract. That's always been the bottom line. You don't get to unsign it and come back." (link)
Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports former Alabama Football HC Nick Saban “will be the subject of a TV commercial airing during college football’s opening weekend that is supportive of the Protect College Sports Act, he told participants today on a call of more than 200 college sports stakeholders and congressional lawmakers. The call with commissioners, presidents and university board members featured Saban, Randy Levine, Cody Campbell and Sens. Eric Schmitt and Maria Cantwell. Lawmakers updated stakeholders on the legislation ahead of a possible vote when Congress returns Sept. 15. The bill is not expected to undergo dramatic changes, lawmakers said. Congressional staff members have identified at least three issues for possible revisions to address opposition: transgender athletes, conference expansion and pending litigation.” (link)
Pac-12 Commissioner Teresa Gould joined JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher on the BFT Unfiltered podcast to outline the league's football strategy, non-conference scheduling parameters, the role of athletics in driving higher education enrollment and more. Here are some takeaways…
➤ On athletic success driving enrollment for member institutions: "What has transpired with realignment and all the change in our industry is not just related to athletics, but what's happening in higher education. And when you look at enrollment trends and recruitment of general students and support for these universities, athletics really matters because athletics is the marketing vehicle of most of these institutions. I think what happens in our industry with realignment and economically what happens with athletics in our institutions is really about attracting students and the health and viability of these universities."
➤ Autonomy designations versus operational investment: "We've been very clear that we're going to control what we can control. … The autonomy legislation is a legislative designation. That's it. It's not based on how much you spend. It's not based on how many games you win. It's not based on your institutional investment. It's an arbitrary bylaw that the NCAA set over a decade ago that hasn't been defined. The power moniker is a kind of PR thing that was put on those conferences. We don't control any of that. … What we're going to control is how much we invest, how we compete, how we build our brand, what we do on the playing field." (link)
West Virginia AD Wren Baker covered a bunch of ground in a sitdown with the All ‘Eers podcast. Here’s what you need to know…
➤ Navigating the proposed $48.5M revenue-sharing cap in the Protect College Sports Act: "That's more than we're spending right now and it would probably take us at least a couple years to get to that cap. ... But at least I could build a three-year plan and say, 'Here's how we're going to get to the cap max’ and we go to work on it."
➤ Generating immediate ROI through new premium seating inside the Coliseum: "We're adding some loge and even some kind of open-air, suite-type seating. We've sold out of that already. ... The project cost us about a million-five, I think. And so in five years, that project will pay for itself."
➤ Financial strategy behind the West Tower project at Milan Puskar Stadium: "Probably the first thing it does for the average fan is it keeps us from having to raise the price of their tickets. ... By getting those premium spaces ... the revenue that those generates gives us additional resources to invest in our program."
➤ Long-term aspirations for mixed-use development: "We're also looking both in the coliseum footprint and around the stadium. Is there any kind of entertainment district-type projects that could be done? Boutique hotels, shops and restaurants … to make our venues not just usable for seven, eight football games a year, but truly 365 day a year facility use opportunities." (link)
The FCS Oversight Committee adopted a proposal to alter the offseason calendar, transfer windows, and recruiting regulations for FCS programs. If approved by the DI Cabinet in October, the new model will grant programs a 21-practice out-of-season window, permit joint spring practices with other four-year institutions, and shrink the January transfer portal window from 15 to 10 days. Further modifications include reducing the 2027 preseason practice window to 27 calendar days and allowing up to 17 total staff members to conduct off-campus recruiting. (link)
Missouri AD Laird Veatch addressed the media as the Tigers unveiled their newly constructed north end zone facilities at Memorial Stadium. Veatch talked about how MU prioritized premium seating and fan experience over raw capacity, confirming the stadium now holds 63,609 fans, and addressed the integration of a new uniform patch sponsorship with Centene Company's Ambetter Health as well as the specialized premium sections backed by local corporate partners Equipment Share and Farmer Company. More from Veatch…
➤ Hospitality over capacity: "The difference is really attributable to the smaller number of seats on the hill … and obviously the addition of all the premium seats here in the north end. And I will remind you that this has really never been about capacity. It's been about elevating a quality elite experience for our fans."
➤ Establishing a baseline for uniform sponsorships while holding back the basketball inventory for future negotiations: "We are really excited about the unprecedented growth in our corporate sponsorships … led by St. Louis based Centene Company and, in particular, their Ambetter Health brand, to be our uniform patch partner for football and all other sports except men's and women's basketball. ... We've intentionally held back men's and women's basketball to pitch that separately."
➤ Partnering with Sodexo Live to overhaul stadium concessions and integrate local brands like Shakespeare's Pizza: "New food and beverage concepts are going to be available throughout the stadium. Some of our concession stands have been converted to grab-and-go. ... A lot more local flavor and variety throughout the stadium." (link)
Arizona AD Desireé Reed-Francois & UCF boss Terry Mohajir were both recently on Big 12 Radio. D1.takeaways…
➤ Reed-Francois : "[We] are up 20% in our football season tickets. … I think we are one of only 10 or 11 FBS programs to have retained both our head football coach, our offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, and our starting quarterback. So, that continuity is also very important to us.” (link)
➤ Mohajir on restructuring the football front office to isolate coaches from NIL negotiations: "Our GM does not report to our head football coach. Our GM reports to our administration. And we do that intentionally and designed so our head coach doesn't have to talk money with the players. And I think that also is great for culture. … The agents will say, ‘I want x more dollars’ or whatever. I don't ever want to put our head coach, our position coaches or the coordinators in that position and talk money with players because that becomes really personal. ... There's a clear demarcation line between the head football coach and the GM to discuss money."
➤ More from Mohajir on maintaining a philosophy of evaluation, recruitment and development when building a roster: "I don't care how much money you have. If you don't have that as your rooted philosophy, you're gonna have a challenging time because you can't just you're gonna go overpay for people or you just can't outspend people. You have to have philosophy. We’ve seen it all over college football. … We’re going to be really disciplined, and that’s for all our sports.” (link)
Iowa AD Beth Goetz says the Hawkeyes have raised $44M toward the Carver-Hawkeye Arena renovation, per The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman, who also reports SLAM has been hired as the project’s architect while a construction firm will be hired soon. The process is expected to last two academic years, starting after 2027 spring graduation. (link)

Pittsburgh has launched The Gold Standard, a comprehensive three-year strategic plan built on five strategic pillars, including student-athlete experience, competitive excellence, revenue generation and resource acquisition, engagement and brand advancement, and operational excellence. Panthers’ AD Allen Greene: "Intercollegiate athletics is in the middle of the most significant transformation in its history. The decisions we make right now will shape Pitt Athletics for years to come. This plan is our commitment to meet that moment with clarity, purpose and flexibility." (link)
Utah and insurance firm ALKEME have agreed to a multiyear partnership that makes ALKEME the equipment sponsor for the Utes’ football program. The ALKEME name will be displayed across the bumpers on the back of Utah football players' helmets beginning this season in what is believed to be the first equipment-only partnership in the country. Utes AD Mark Harlan: "This partnership is a tremendous example of the impact that can be made when a partner that shares our values and our vision comes forward in a really creative way. It also speaks to the new opportunities that are emerging through the innovative approach of Crimson Brand Partners. Our student-athletes will benefit from the investment that ALKEME is making in our athletics programs, and the internship program will open doors for University of Utah students." (link)
Penn State has opened the Paterno Family Football Experience Room, a permanent museum experience celebrating more than a century of PSU’s football history. The room will also function as a multi-purpose engagement space for donor and alumni gatherings, Letterman events and special program celebrations. Non-eligibility Legal Ledger…
➤ Former Texas Tech football student-athlete Roy Alexander has filed a lawsuit against the NCAA alleging that his six-game suspension for gambling on sports is unjust and constitutes breach of contract. Alexander is seeking an injunction to allow him to return to the field earlier in his final season of eligibility, according to ESPN’s David Purdum, who adds: “The suit acknowledges that Alexander violated NCAA rules by betting on sports from 2023 to '25, but it states that he did not wager on any games involving his teams and therefore did not impact the integrity of the game. He played for Albany from 2021 to '24 and Incarnate Word in 2024-25, before transferring to Texas Tech. … According to the suit, Alexander placed small bets -- most of them under $12 and the largest $80 -- through an app from January 2023 to April 2025 while on the teams at Albany and Incarnate Word. He stopped betting after reading an ESPN article on the ‘perils of wagering’ on college sports, according to the filing.” (link)
➤ A former Cal softball student-athlete has filed a lawsuit alleging that former HC Chelsea Spencer coerced her into a sexual relationship and prematurely ended her softball career, according to Sports Illustrated's Paige Durrenberger, who adds, per the suit: “Jane Doe's playing time directly correlated with how quickly she responded to Spencer's advances. … In 2024, the relationship became sexual and lasted for about a year. The player alleges that the coach would visit her hotel room on away trips. The complaint outlines the sexual relationship as ‘mutual,’ but acknowledges the unfair power dynamic between the two. The player claimed Spencer instructed her to delete messages and keep the relationship a secret from everyone, including her teammates. As the relationship deepened during the softball season, the player decided to end the relationship before a game … in April 2025. According to the complaint, the player expressed that she would never speak to Spencer again, and Spencer responded, ‘You're not pitching.’” Also according to the complaint, the player went to Bears Assoc. AD for Sports Administration Gordon Bayne in May 2025 to tell the truth about the relationship. Following the meeting, the player was allegedly removed from the team. UC Berkeley Vice Chancellor for Communications and Public Affairs Dan Mogulof declined to comment. (link, link)
