“The truth is that college athletics is now subject to genuine market forces, but schools have barely begun the sorts of investments that will be required to adapt, let alone win.”
Chris Park
Echo Group Holdings Co-Founder/CEO and advisor to the Big Ten on its attempted $2.4B deal with UC Investments and lessons for college athletics leaders

The DI Cabinet has approved a proposal that would move men's soccer to a two-semester playing season. Because it passed with less than 75% of the vote, the proposal will now move to a 30-day rescission period, during which eligible DI schools or conferences can submit a vote to defeat the new rule. If two-thirds of the eligible members do not vote to defeat it, it will subsequently take effect. The Cabinet's vote is not final until its meeting concludes later today. (link)
Echo Group Holdings Co-Founder/CEO and advisor to the Big Ten Chris Park, who led the conference’s attempt at a $2.4B investment from UC Investments, pens an op-ed for Fortune on changes needed in college athletics. “Everyone agrees the sport is in crisis. Most are wrong about why. The turmoil doesn’t stem from a shortage of money or rules. It stems from the fact that universities haven’t learned how to run their most valuable franchises.” Notable comments from Park…
➤ “University leaders sprinting to Capitol Hill should heed the warning of McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc, who famously eschewed government intervention: if we have to bring in ‘government to beat our competition, then we deserve to go broke.’ The truth is that college athletics is now subject to genuine market forces, but schools have barely begun the sorts of investments that will be required to adapt, let alone win.”
➤ Park points to professional sports as a direction for those investments. “‘Moneyball’ is now standard operating procedure across pro sports. The strongest NFL organizations invest relentlessly in the competitive infrastructure that players and coaches don’t control: player development, capital allocation, data analytics, and sports science that buoy an organization even as its talent comes and goes. College programs neglect that groundwork, and it shows. The Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks employ nearly three times as many non-uniform football operations personnel as the College Football Playoff champion Indiana Hoosiers.”
➤ “The most storied coaches in college sports were institution builders whose regional, relationship-driven networks of high school coaches functioned as proprietary talent pipelines decades before teams used spreadsheets. As recruiting migrates from Friday Night Lights to the transfer portal, that old infrastructure has crumbled. No one in higher education has built its modern replacement.”
➤ “Modernizing raises two harder questions. First, who is leading our schools? NFL general managers have the owner’s ear; university presidential tenure has declined for two decades. As power migrates from the head coach’s office, universities must relocate it —to the president, elsewhere in the athletics department, or the board. Second, what is the point of a college education? As public trust collapses and Washington moves to fund the individual scientist over legacy institutions, universities would be wise not to assume that exceptional students need them—whether they wear lab coats or shoulder pads. … With or without Congress, the fix isn’t more politics. It’s college leaders who start competing and investing, like the pro owners who do this for a living.” (link)
SMU AD Damon Evans argues in SBJ that college football needs to ditch its “flawed and biased” preseason rankings and delay national poll releases until at least eight weeks into the year. Evans: “Preseason polls set us up to grade the paper before we’re done reading it. … Assumptions made before a single down has been played inevitably contaminate later evaluations. Wins over preseason ranked teams are immediately considered ‘quality wins.’ Losses to unranked teams, no matter how good they may truly be, are bad losses. And as we’ve seen, even wins over unranked teams can result in a drop in the rankings. All because of a collection of largely unsubstantiated opinions rendered before final rosters have even been determined. … Every athletics administrator and head coach already recognizes how ridiculous this system is. This year, the College Football Playoff will not release its initial rankings until Nov. 3, nine weeks after the start of the season, smartly reasoning that -- gasp! -- actual game results should determine those rankings. … Let’s stop pretending we had the answer in August. The time has come to let the teams settle it on the field.” (link)
Summit League Commissioner Josh Fenton joined the Happy Hour with John Gaskins from the conference’s hoops media day to discuss league stability, detail the league’s competitive achievements across multiple sports and more. Here are some takeaways…
➤ On navigating realignment and membership strategy: "Membership is in my mind every day. ... I sat with [our ADs] for an hour [two weeks ago], all eight of them and went through our membership discussions, our membership strategy, the conversations that we've had, how we can continue to build, the importance of being committed as a group of eight because membership always starts with your existing group. That's how you can be successful in attracting others. And we had a really healthy and good conversation to the extent of the group kind of collectively saying to me, ‘Josh, if you need us, the eight of us going and sitting down with a potential member that we think would be a good fit, we're in.’"
➤ Ways the Summit League needs to change to remain strong and keep institutions interested in staying: "I think re-imagining ourselves from a strategic standpoint, like the who we are, the foundational elements, things like mission, vision, core values, guiding principles, what are our goals? We're going through a process right now … to look at things like visual and verbal identity, marks, logos, colors. … The other thing that I think our members talk about a lot is how can we do better storytelling the successes? … And so whether it be our social media presence, engaging with people like you to get our stories out there and talk about the success of the Summit League are things that we need to do more of and we will continue to do more of in the future.” (link)
Michigan State AD Dan Bartholomae outlines three areas of immediate focus for the Spartans in an effort to “establish a blueprint for sustained department excellence: transparency, consistency and competitiveness.” More…
➤ “Buy-in from our community will only be achieved if we are clear about our vision and explain our decisions. Transparency will allow staff and fans to feel invested in our initiatives. From there, success will follow. The two most pressing areas that need more explanation are Spartan Ventures and FOR SPARTA. While both initiatives serve to benefit Spartan Athletics, there’s a great opportunity for more transparency, direction and clarity.”
➤ “There have been differing philosophies guiding decision making, and leadership transition naturally results in initiatives that are started, only to never be seen to fruition. Stops and starts are frustrating, something I’m well aware of given my own experience with leadership change. I recognize the hesitancy when in the past your commitment hasn’t always been reciprocated. That’s why transparency is so important. Earning your trust is a continual process, one that requires consistency and showing up. I’m fully committed to both for the long-term.”
➤ “Competitiveness and championship aspirations require support. And while it’s not required to spend the most to win, we must be competitive in providing resources to the programs we expect to compete for championships. This means resourcing those programs in the top 1/3 of the conference. I have three guideposts as I look to assign resources: creating the best student-athlete experience in the country; investing in programs with a demonstrated return on that investment; [and] opportunity for success.” (link)
Performance incentives and six-figure Heisman Trophy bonuses have become ubiquitous in college football player contracts during the second year of revenue sharing. According to The Athletic’s David Ubben and Matt Baker, it has also become a way for schools to stretch their budgets even further by taking out insurance policies on the incentives. Schools and collectives are partnering with specialized firms to purchase coverage that hedges against such incentive payouts. GamePoint Capital CEO Will Hall estimates that more than half of top college quarterbacks likely have Heisman bonuses in their deals, while adding that performance incentives for all-conference or All-America honors can serve as a "leveling ground" for Group of Six programs looking to offer bigger packages to players, while hedging them with insurance for a lower total cost the school is responsible for paying. Altius Sports President Andrew Donovan: "It’s picked up a ton in the last year. It was not prevalent pre-House because there was nothing to protect for the schools, specifically. But these (insurance) companies were still poking around at the collectives and saying, 'Hey, can we insure you?' But at that point in time, people were like, 'This is very confusing. Forget it.'" More from ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips as he joined the Field of 68 podcast from the 2026 ACC Tip Off. Here are the highlights…
➤ Managing roster compression: "It's hurting the high school student-athletes. When you have coaches in the country saying, 'I'm not recruiting a high school student-athlete anymore’ – I don't blame them – ‘my job's too important. I don't have a long time to win. I'm taking a 22- or 23-year-old … and I just can’t take an 18-year-old, that just can't be college athletics. … The proposal of your high school graduation or your 19th birthday, whatever comes first, triggers a five-year window, and if you get injured two of those years, really feel bad, still get a chance to play three … but you’re leaving because those high school kids are not getting the opportunities and college athletics was never meant to be a forever thing.”
➤ On the conference's financial growth despite a locked television contract: "We've generated 56% … revenue growth without a new television deal. It's unheard of. We're going to be near a billion dollars in distribution next year. We've won 36 championships over the last four-plus years. Now we need to win it in hoops. Men’s basketball.”
➤ Mitigating the revenue gap with the SEC and Big Ten: "I don't know that that gap's going to change anytime soon for us. We signed a 20-year agreement in 2016, so we don't get another bite of the apple here for … the next eight, nine years. ... It can't always be about the conference office though. I take it seriously that I and we are really the main distributor of the dollars that are going to our institutions but there has to be some institutional investment, whether it's facilities or some of the other resources." (link)
Newly appointed Cal State Bakersfield AD Andy Fiske addressed the university community during his introductory press conference, during which he outlined his vision to establish the program as the primary sports and entertainment destination in Kern County. D1.takeaways…
➤ Travel and competitive advantages of the Big West: "This is a winnable conference. We could win conference championships and make NCAA runs from this conference. The other thing I really like about this, to be candid, you look at Cal and Stanford, they're flying their volleyball team all the way back East. ... Our conference is ideal for short drives in and out. It lets them be truly student-athletes and have that balance of life that's needed."
➤ Adapting to the modern landscape: "So, in this new world of college athletics with NIL, rev share, conference realignment, if you would have told me about this 10 years ago, I would have said, 'You're crazy. That's not college athletics.' But that's where we are. We're going to have to be creative. We're going to have to do things unique and different just like all the other universities out there. ... We might have to be a little bit disruptors to be successful."
➤ Establishing priorities for his first 90 to 100 days: "I think it's going to be important to take the first 90 to 100 days and listen, talk with our coaches, talk with our student-athletes, talk with our administration, talk with our partners on campus, and talk with stakeholders in the community. Where are our opportunities? Where are our challenges? What are we doing well? How do we grow upon that?" (link)
Northwestern AD Mark Jackson spoke with SBJ’s Matt Fortuna on the field ahead of the Wildcats' opening game at the newly constructed Ryan Field. On the three core objectives for the stadium: "No. 1, I want it to help us win football games. We want to get in the College Football Playoff and pursue a national championship. We know creating a home-field advantage has something to do with that. No. 2, we want to create a world-class fan experience for everybody that comes here. … And then thirdly, right, it has to work from a business model – to your point, and to what you cover. And the revenue that now gets created, unlike any time we’ve ever been able to before, it gets reinvested back into not only football but all 21 sports and all 500 athletes. So that’s got to make that work, too.” (link)
Maryland generated more than $1.6M in alcohol revenue across four athletic venues from July 1, 2025, through June 1, 2026, according to The Baltimore Sun's Michael Howes. The university's branded Testudo Lager produced the highest overall net sales at $238,969 on 21,823 units, plus another $13,014 in six-pack sales. Michelob Ultra led in total volume with 24,033 units for $203,328. Additional top sellers included Miller Lite (19,701 units for $167,464), Bud Light (16,108 units for $136,491), and Goose Island (9,791 units for $107,497). (link)
CBS secured its first weekend college football ratings win in nearly two years as Iowa and Ohio State averaged 5.966M viewers (peaking at 7M), according to Awful Announcing's Sean Keeley. Additional viewership figures include Fox's Michigan vs. Minnesota (4.1M) and Penn State vs. Northwestern (3.4M), ESPN's Auburn vs. Tennessee (3.02M) and Notre Dame vs. UNC (2.98M) and NBC’s Washington vs. USC (2.6M). Marshall recently secured a pair of legal victories against Pittsburgh regarding the canceled back half of a scheduled two-game football series in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, per MetroNews’ Daniel Woods. Following a Pennsylvania court's decision to dismiss Pitt's original lawsuit, a Cabell County (WV) Circuit Court jury then ruled in favor of Marshall, opening the door for the university to collect contractual damages. As for exact settlement figures, a Cabell County judge will determine the eventual amount. Marshall Chief Legal Officer Toney Stroud said the university is not inclined to negotiate a smaller number than the “clear value” outlined in the original contract. “When these games get cancelled, it is pretty difficult to determine an exact dollar amount, so most of the agreements contain a fixed amount, and under this agreement it was a million dollars." Pepperdine has urged the Ninth Circuit to revive its trademark suit over the usage of the “Waves” team name in the Netflix sports comedy series “Running Point,” starring Kate Hudson. U.S. District Judge Terrence Berg denied a motion to amend the dismissal of an antitrust and unjust enrichment lawsuit brought by former Michigan football standouts Denard Robinson, Braylon Edwards, Michael Martin, and Shawn Crable against the NCAA, the Big Ten, and the Big Ten Network. Sportico’s Michael McCann explains the former players sought back-pay for uncompensated NIL usage during their careers between 2001 and 2012, but Berg ruled that the claims fell well outside the four-year statute of limitations for federal antitrust violations and the six-year limit for unjust enrichment. Berg additionally rejected the argument that ongoing broadcasts constituted a continuing violation that reset the legal clock, ruling that the key to the players’ theory rests on signing away their rights to the NCAA. The latest that occurred was in 2012, which makes the lawsuit “grossly untimely.” McCann adds that while continued use after 2012 might increase potential damages, that use doesn’t serve as a “new and independent act that restarts the statute of limitations,” per Berg. Fourteen former softball student-athletes from Kent State and Saint Francis have accused former HC Jessica O’Donnell of physical and mental abuse, detailing what they call a pattern of intimidation and forced competition despite medical diagnoses, according to Sports Illustrated's Paige Durrenberger. O’Donnell resigned from Kent State in June after three seasons and recently emerged as a candidate for an assistant position at Maryland. According to Durrenberger, the student-athletes outlined allegations spanning from 2018 to 2026, which included a ban on recording devices in coaching offices, the implementation of a peer-informant system, and pressure to ignore doctor's orders for injuries including a fractured L3 vertebra and a grade 4 tibia stress fracture.
