The 2026 State of AI in Sports Report from Teamworks and Front Office Sports reveals a gap: 90% of sports organizations expect their AI usage to grow, yet only 15% can prove measurable ROI today. Based on responses from leading professional teams, leagues, and collegiate athletic departments, the report shows what separates top performers from the rest. Deploying AI department by department yields virtually no return. Organizations with dedicated AI budgets, accountable leadership, and connected athlete records see ROI rates of up to 67%. “The big thing we need to do with respect to both the ESPN deal and the Skydance deal … is we need to start thinking about that now, because there are all kinds of deals that are coming up over the course of the next five years or so that involve all sorts of sports.”

NCAA President Charlie Baker appeared on The Hoops HQ Show with Seth Davis and Andy Katz to discuss legal battles over the five-in-five eligibility rule, upcoming TV negotiations and more. Key takeaways…

➤ Preparing early for upcoming media rights negotiations: “The big thing we need to do with respect to both the ESPN deal and the Skydance deal … is we need to start thinking about that now, because there are all kinds of deals that are coming up over the course of the next five years or so that involve all sorts of sports. The world associated with this is way bigger than it was when this thing was originally negotiated. ... I think you can expect us to probably put together a working group to start talking about how this should work certainly in the next 12 months, even though it's very far away.”

➤ Drawing audiences to Olympic championships and projecting record volleyball sales: “We had better attendance and better viewership across just about everything in the championship portfolio we've got, and not just in Division I, also in Division II and Division III. I think our fan database is helping with that. ... Our open rate on our emails to people about whether they'd be interested in buying tickets to one of our championships is 55%. That's pretty much unheard of. ... We've sold an extraordinary number of seats already for the volleyball championship, which is in San Antonio. … I think we're probably going to sell more than 30K tickets a night for that Final Four.”

➤ On the June timing of the age-based eligibility policy and subsequent lawsuits: “If you waited until now, there's no doubt in anybody's mind that we would've been sued long before now by people looking for an extra year, simply because the whole idea of an age-based eligibility system with five years of hard eligibility was going to get challenged in the court anyway. ... This idea that there was some magic time at which the membership should have made a decision to move forward on this, I think they probably did the right thing, which is they said, ‘We're probably going to get sued by somebody somewhere anyway for changing the rule. We should probably just make the decision at the point in time in which we decide we actually know what it looks like and how it's going to work and make sure that every class to the extent possible gets what they were promised when they started.’” (link, link)

The Big Ten is officially adopting a conference-level rule limiting member institution involvement in third-party NIL agreements in preparation for the Protect College Sports Act’s anticipated passage. Key details from Big Ten Council of Chancellors/Presidents Chair/Indiana President Pamela Whitten…

➤ “It is imperative our member institutions can begin to plan, budget and build their rosters approximating the act’s economic structure. … The Big Ten conference-level rule limits institutional involvement in arranging third-party NIL agreements to a maximum of $27.5M per member institution. Combined with institutional NIL payments permitted by the House settlement, the conference rule restricts institutional involvement in student-athlete NIL agreements to a total of $49M per institution, approximating the economic framework of the PCSA.”

➤ “The rule effectively requires Big Ten institutions to initiate the financial and operational mechanisms necessary to comply with PCSA limits in advance of upcoming signing and transfer portal windows. The rule is effective immediately and each institution and its lead athletics staff must attest their compliance with the rule. This policy applies to institutional action only as student-athletes remain free to pursue NIL opportunities with any entity (associated or non-associated) on their own. The Big Ten rule does not replace any existing rules or policies.” (link)

More on the Big Ten’s decision from Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger: “To be clear, the Big Ten isn't independently ‘raising’ the cap. It is permitting a certain amount of school-affiliated third-party NIL deals (~$27M), which must still pass through the CSC. It is penalizing schools for exceeding a set amount of school-affiliated third-party deals. … Attorney Jeff Kessler tells Yahoo Sports that he's drafting a letter to the Big Ten in regard to its new cap rule that penalizes schools for exceeding a cap on school-affiliated third-party NIL. If the bill doesn’t pass, the league is violating the House settlement, he says.” Kessler: “They can smoke all the dope they want. It won’t happen. If the legislation passes, they can do this. If not, they are violating the agreement. They’ll be getting a letter to this effect.” (link, link)

At yesterday’s DI Board of Directors meeting, a motion to overturn the men’s college soccer split-season calendar proposal was introduced but failed, per The Athletic’s Henry Bushnell, who adds: “That's a significant win for advocates/coaches. But this still has to survive the rescission process. Deadline is next Friday, Nov. 6, at 5 p.m.” (link)

American Commissioner Tim Pernetti appeared on Wake Up Call with Dan Tortora to discuss a number of topics. Pernetti’s perspectives…

➤ Utilizing quantitative media analysis in its process to invite James Madison into the league: "Following JMU's formal application to the American, we conducted a process that is very detail oriented and very data driven. ... It's focused in six primary areas. Institutional academic alignment is certainly one, competitive strength and trajectory is one. The institutional investment and what they're doing across the whole university, financial sustainability and member value, and then certainly brand and media value and their reach and geography and operational fit. We put all that stuff into a blender and it's a real process because we look at the data, we pull it apart, we go after more data. We used multiple sources of analysis on this, including quantitative media analysis and market dynamics. And at the end of the day, after completing the evaluation, we had a unanimous vote."

➤ Protecting current conference members from financial revenue dilution: "When I started as commissioner … one commitment we made was we won’t dilute the league financially. And while we had a lot of interest in new members coming to us, interested in the American, we won't entertain any conversations that require our current membership to be diluted financially. That doesn't make any sense. They've created all the value, so we're going to dilute the value that they've created for someone that hasn't created any value? That's sort of how the expansion circus goes. It has to be about new value. … We expect you to invest, we expect you to be competitively deep. We expect a high quality student-athlete experience." (link)

UTRGV SVP/AD Chasse Conque joined the Jim's Razorback Pizza Hotline to discuss launching the Vaqueros' football program, the school’s significant investment in athletic facilities and more. Here are some takeaways…

➤ Highlighting fan enthusiasm surrounding the football program: "We have 12K people on our season ticket wait list, which is hard to imagine. We've sold out all 10 home games that we've played at home at Vackar Stadium at this point. Everything that you want from when you start a program from scratch and as an institution, which you want football to bring to your university and to your community, we're getting to live and see that right now."

➤ Investing in department facilities: "Over the last four and a half, five years, we've built nearly $200M in new facilities for all of our sports. Obviously football is a big piece of that. We built a 45K-square-foot operation center for our football program. ... And then we purchased and renovated a stadium that's not very old. … We were blessed with a $20M gift that's now named for the Vackar family. And so we call it our one-two punch. We think [it’s] one of the nicest stadiums in the country, certainly at the FCS level, and then we have an operation center that’s first class in every manner."

➤ Football helping elevate attendance across non-revenue sports: "It has galvanized our region. It has helped all of our other programs across the board, basketball, baseball, volleyball. ... We're drawing 4, 5, 6K for baseball games on Friday, Saturday night. Seven years ago, that number was 500 people at those games. We finished 23rd or 24th in the country in Division I in baseball attendance this past year. The University of Oklahoma was maybe 34th and they won the national championship. And so to see our market come together, our region come together has been truly remarkable.” (link)

St. John’s VP/AD Ed Kull describes the early-October exits of university SVP/COO Joe Oliva, Deputy AD/COO John Diffley, Asst. AD for Ticket Operations Melissa Manno and additional employees as “tough” because of their institutional and personal connections to the university as alumni. “It’s challenging to try and fill those voids. It’s not easy or possible to do that, so how do we continue to pivot and try to lean on others?” Alongside university lay-offs affecting 55 staff and administrative positions in August driven by campus-wide enrollment struggles, The Torch’s Dean Koutouratsas notes the athletic department also absorbed budget cuts, headcount reductions and staffed fewer GA positions. More from Kull: “Change is never easily accepted, especially from a culture change. But, I think our folks are resilient and passionate. They’re gritty. We have to continue to lean on that. …I’m really proud of our team because many have taken on multiple jobs and responsibilities. I also want athletics, especially the basketball piece, to be a marketing driving force for the rest of the campus.” (link)

The Wolverine’s Chris Balas reports that candidates for the Michigan AD opening include Vanderbilt AD Candice Lee, who previously worked with U-M President-elect C. Cybele Raver at Vandy, DePaul SVP for Advancement and External Relations Katie Fraumann, who is a former Michigan Assoc. AD and basketball alumna, and Iowa Deputy/former Colorado State AD Joe Parker, who is also a former Michigan swimming student-athlete. (link)

Rice is expected to formally begin its search for a new AD “in the next few weeks,” per CollegeAD, which reports: “Sources say the process is expected to kick off the week of November 9 with the initial round of virtual interviews. From there, sources say the school will narrow the candidate pool and move to in-person interviews for the next round. The goal, sources familiar with the process told us, is for Rice to have a new AD in place by Thanksgiving break.” (link)

D1.dossiers are available for both Michigan & Rice for those of you looking for an edge in the interview & hiring process to lead the Wolverines or Owls. Akron AD Andrew Goodrich: “I used the D1.dossier. It helped me a ton because … I’ve got a day job and I want to do some pretty in-depth research. I’m sorry, shameless plug because it works. It’s really effective. I was able to evaluate all of the sports programs. I was able to evaluate their budgets and just get a sense of where they were so I can understand the challenges that may lie ahead.” (link - Michigan, link - Rice)

Big Ten presidents and chancellors will meet today to discuss and potentially adopt cap rules that align with the framework of the Protect College Sports Act, per Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who adds: “The conference remains fully supportive of the bill. These new rules permit schools to begin operating within the bill’s framework, which increases the athlete cap from $21.6M to about $49M while featuring a league-wide financial penalty structure for those exceeding the cap.” (link)

Colgate suspended its men’s lacrosse program from all athletic and social activities pending an investigation into electronic communications among team members. Raiders AD Yariv Amir and VP/Dean of the College Paul J. McLoughlin II announced the indefinite offseason suspension after administrators learned of potential student conduct violations the previous day and wrote: “As with all student conduct investigations, the University does not predetermine any findings of responsibility or of outcomes.” (link)

More from Samford AD/DI Men’s Basketball Committee Chair Martin Newton on the growth of the March Madness field…

➤ Preserving the tournament product while expanding access: "What we've been able to do is increase access without changing the core product. The opening round will obviously look different because you're going to have 24 teams in the opening round now. It's going to be a combination of at-large teams, automatic qualifiers, and you've got eight new at-large teams that will be added to that field. … Once we get into that field of 64, I think it's going to look very similar and feel very similar to what it has in the past."

➤ Does tournament expansion potentially open more bid opportunities for mid-major leagues? "I think it helps all leagues. ... [The SoCon is] a one-bid league. We have been a one-bid league. So, could that help a second team? I know when we went back and looked at data from the previous five, six years, there were several times that the SoCon, had we expanded, would've had that second team in. ... The expansion and the growth of the Power 4 leagues has made it more challenging obviously for the mid-majors because those leagues are so big now and we don't have as many opportunities to get those Quad 1 or Quad 2 games, especially on neutral sites or at home." (link)

Indiana continues to drive significant television ratings and economic value for the Big Ten following its national championship, according to SBJ’s Matt Fortuna, who notes the nation's largest living alumni base helped the program average 6.033M viewers per game through seven weeks this season, a stark contrast to the 1.43M average in 2022. Fox has broadcast Big Noon Kickoff from seven regular-season Indiana games since HC Curt Cignetti's arrival—trailing only Ohio State and Michigan. Internally, IU estimates the per-game economic impact on Bloomington grew from $5.5M before 2024 to $9M in 2025, and Fortuna notes that for the Hoosiers’ recent matchup against Ohio State, the local airport handled 119 private flights—nearly double the typical home weekend volume. Hoosiers AD Scott Dolson: “It’s really, really hard to quantify because it’s really just so incredibly high all over the place, and not just the pure numbers in terms of what you could just see the influx of dollars to the economy and to the university, but really just the energy, the confidence that people have, and just the pure enthusiasm. It’s exactly what we always wanted.” (link)

Michigan State AD Dan Bartholomae joined The Drive with Jack to outline the athletic department's plan to push the football program into the upper third of Big Ten roster spending. The financial roadmap relies heavily on a $401M commitment from Greg and Dawn Williams—including $290M for the FOR SPARTA initiative and $100M for Spartan Ventures—alongside a recent $10M pledge from Joe and Julie Serra toward the broader $1B fundraising campaign. Bartholomae also provided updates on a $500M renovation to Spartan Stadium, which is currently 95% designed with construction slated to begin in 2027 and finish in 2029. Bartholomae also emphasized the need to build a sustainable payroll foundation: "Certainly, as you can imagine, we've got some resources on hand to jumpstart the roster, and a lot of that is going to come from that gift. We're not just looking at next year. We're looking five to ten years down the road as well. ... And once you're in the top third, I do believe that that gives you the best chance." (link)

Outgoing Old Dominion AD Wood Selig expressed concern about the expanded College Football Playoff, noting it could threaten conference championship games that drive significant media value for Group of Six leagues. He tells local ESPN host Scott Jackson the Sun Belt derives 40% of its television contract value with ESPN from its title game; therefore, the conference would have to explore alternative scheduling options if the playoff calendar expands. As for the potential for a standalone Group of Six postseason tournament: "I definitely think if there's money to be made if the G6 were to play a playoff among themselves, I think you'd get a number of schools who would listen to whatever proposals there may be. ... It really may make more sense for the G6 ultimately to go their our own way and do something on a national basis that would be among us." (link)

It’s Personnel…

➤ NACDA has named Summit Racing Equipment Search and Discovery Engineer Eddie Mitchell as VP, effective November 9. Mitchell will be working primarily in the database, membership and event registration space, eventually replacing 31-year NACDA veteran Brian Horning, who announced plans to retire following the convention in June. Temple Football HC KC Keeler responded to recent speculation that the Owls are not adequately resourced in comparison to their American Conference foes: “That is not the case at all. … We have the biggest recruiting department in this conference. Our salaries, our medical, our strength training, our academics, they’re all at least in the middle of the pack. Rev share we’re guessing we’re around half. So this is a KC Keeler problem. This is not a [Temple President] John Fry or an [AD] Arthur Johnson problem.” (link)

ABC's broadcast of Ole Miss-Texas led all college football viewership for the weekend with 8.1M viewers, according to The Athletic's Stewart Mandel. Fox captured 7M viewers for Indiana's matchup with Michigan, followed by Texas A&M-Alabama on ABC with 5.9M. Other top broadcasts included BYU-UCF on Fox (4.7M), LSU-Auburn on ABC (3.5M), and Tennessee-South Carolina on ESPN (3M). All other games drew fewer than 2M viewers. (link)

Howard has signed a men’s basketball jersey patch sponsorship with luxury stroller and carseat brand Nuna worth “well into six figures,” according to Front Office Sports’ Ellyn Briggs, who notes Nuna has been a sponsor at the Bison's Burr Gymnasium for the past four years. The deal also includes an additional year of on-court presence for Nuna. (link)

United States Attorney David Metcalf announced that Roderick Winkler pleaded guilty to bribery and wire fraud for his role as a fixer in a point-shaving scheme that targeted Division I men's basketball games. After a successful scheme involving the Chinese Basketball Association, Winkler and his co-conspirators shifted their focus to collegiate athletics between 2023 and 2025, offering underdog players $10K to $30K per game to underperform and miss point spreads. The fixers specifically targeted athletes whose potential illicit earnings would significantly exceed their legitimate NIL compensation opportunities. The conspiracy ultimately involved more than 39 players across 17 NCAA programs who attempted to fix over 29 games, generating more than $3M in fraudulent wagers and $1.1M in losses for domestic sportsbooks. Winkler faces a maximum of 45 years in prison. (link)
