The 2026 State of AI in Sports Report from Teamworks and Front Office Sports reveals a gap: 90% of sports organizations expect their AI usage to grow, yet only 15% can prove measurable ROI today. Based on responses from leading professional teams, leagues, and collegiate athletic departments, the report shows what separates top performers from the rest. Deploying AI department by department yields virtually no return. Organizations with dedicated AI budgets, accountable leadership, and connected athlete records see ROI rates of up to 67%. Internal communications and public records reveal that Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell’s advocacy group Saving College Sports (SCS) utilized a deep network of major conservative political figures, university leaders and conference commissioners to aggressively lobby for the Protect College Sports Act, per Front Office Sports’ Jon Loesche. Key details…

➤ Club for Growth President/Federalist Society Co-Founder David McIntosh and DraftKings Head of Corporate Development and Strategy/North Carolina Board of Trustees Chair/former Vanderbilt AD Malcolm Turner were among those invited by former Baylor Board Chair Dary Stone to an August 4 SCS strategy call with Sen. Eric Schmitt, (R-MO). The duo’s involvement in the effort to pass college sport legislation had previously gone unreported.

➤ Loesche: “Stone provided recipients with lobbying templates to send to senators, sent numerous campaign updates, and repeatedly pleaded with the mailing list recipients to contact university leaders and senators. … In late June, as Stone was rallying university leaders behind the bill, he and Campbell gave a combined $30K to Winning For America Fund, a joint fundraising committee for Schmitt. … Five weeks later, Schmitt headlined a strategy call to rally support for the bill.”

➤ With the PCSA facing an uncertain future in the Senate, Stone ramped up his urgency, sending a July 30 instruction: “There will be a vote amongst the Conferences on PCSA today. Please contact your Presidents.” He asked recipients to have them vote in favor, adding, “Very important. This is it.” More. (link)

➤ Campbell responds to Loesche’s reporting: “Lazy, sensationalist headline here. The ‘DraftKings executive’ is a board of trustees member at the University of North Carolina, and we spoke to him in that capacity - one of the hundreds of universities Saving College Sports has engaged with. And of course we have talked to ‘influential’ politicians.  How else would we help get the bill passed??” (link)

The future of bowl games will likely be among today’s talking points when eight bowl directors and Bowl Season Executive Director Nick Carparelli meet in Irving, Texas, to address the existential threats posed to non-playoff bowl games by the College Football Playoff's upcoming expansion to 24 teams, per On3’s Brett McMurphy. An anonymous bowl director: “This meeting is happening because we don’t want to be the band members playing on the deck as the ship sinks. Let’s try to get as many on the lifeboats. Let’s discuss the craziest solutions and let’s look at the least craziest solutions. Let’s put everything on the table.” More…

➤ With postseason expansion, the number of non-playoff bowls with P4 vs. P4 matchups is projected to shrink from 16 or 17 down to roughly six, as top brands opt out of lower-tier games and non-playoff bowl-eligible power league teams with winning records dwindle to around a dozen annually. An anonymous bowl source: “Can you make a business model consistently with teams like, say, Northwestern and Mississippi State instead of Miami (FL) or USC? You think a 6-6 Michigan or Tennessee would want to go to a bowl game? In today’s world they would be cleaning house, coaches, players, everybody.” Another anonymous bowl director adds: “The expanded College Football Playoff is killing the bowl system. The same bowl system that annually paid these conferences millions of dollars as long as anyone can remember.”

➤ The Group of Six bowls won’t suffer a similar fate, according to McMurphy. While guaranteed to lose at least one team to the 24-team playoff, and perhaps as many as three a year, they will have plenty of schools available. An anonymous G6 bowl director: “We all should be in a good place, but in this environment, nothing is guaranteed. The conference commissioners created this sandbox that won’t accommodate all the (35 non-playoff) bowls. Most of us will make it, but others may not.”

➤ Bowl directors said they would consider moving their games to remain relevant, but would schools that could play as many as 17 games, including four or five playoff games, want to add another non-playoff game before the season? An anonymous bowl source: “Do I think there will be a postseason other than the CFP? Yes, but no one knows what that will look like. Because the conferences don’t know. I appreciate they want to do something, but until the conferences commit to what they want to be — and they have no incentive to do something right now.” (link)

Billionaire mega boosters are reshaping the college athletics landscape by leveraging their wealth to directly fund roster budgets and accelerate administrative realignment, per The Athletic’s Justin Williams. Highlighted by Indiana securing transfer quarterback Fernando Mendoza via a Mark Cuban donation, which helped fuel a national championship run and drove IU's estimated 2026 roster budget to $36M–$40M, ultra-wealthy donors are shifting from traditional facility naming rights to direct player acquisition. Texas Tech booster Dusty Womble: “Donors have a lot more ownership of what’s going on in college sports these days.” Here’s what you need to know…

➤ At SMU, booster Bill Armstrong helped spearhead a group that financed a jump to the ACC, forfeiting upwards of $200M in broadcast payouts over nine years in the process. The resulting competitive success quickly drove a 56% increase in university applications. Armstrong: “I saw it as an opportunity for SMU to rise very quickly. If we did it the old-fashioned way where nobody gets paid, and it was the same old same old, it just would have taken us longer to establish ourselves.”

➤ Power 4 programs now feature roster budget ranges reaching as high as $55M, with mega boosters operating as the critical differentiators in talent retention despite concerns over long-term financial sustainability. Armstrong: “It’s absolutely a non-sustainable business model and everybody knows it. But nobody can control themselves. Because nobody wants to be left behind.”

➤ What’s the payoff? Williams: “It’s their passion. Their escape. [Booster Cody] Campbell cried tears of joy on the trophy stage when Texas Tech won the Big 12 title. … Their return on investment is winning, whether for rivalry bragging rights or giving back to their alma mater. What’s the point of having all that money if you’re gonna sit on the sidelines?” Armstrong: “That’s a cost we’re willing to pay.” (link)

Huddle Up’s Joe Pompliano analyzes the NFL’s partnership with private equity firm General Atlantic—which manages $130B in assets—to launch a new investment fund that expands upon the league's internal venture arm, 32 Equity. Pompliano notes the league's 32 owners have allocated a total of $256M ($8M per owner) into the fund since 2013, generating substantial returns through equity stakes in companies like Fanatics, On Location, CLEAR, and NOBULL. Pompliano: "Partnering with General Atlantic feels like a good mix of risk and reward. Not only will General Atlantic potentially contribute hundreds of millions in new capital to the joint venture, but the private equity giant’s resources, deal flow, and operational expertise will reduce the risk of failure. And that’s without mentioning the most important part: team owners don’t have to share any of this money with players. That’s because, unlike media rights, ticket sales, concessions, sponsorships, and licensing deals, which are split roughly 50/50 between the league and its players, the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement excludes investments made by 32 Equity from revenue sharing." (link)

Maryland Football HC Mike Locksley has reportedly been dismissed, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel, who notes he’s owed $9.75M through his contract. “There's no offset or mitigation on the deal, which means Maryland will pay all of it even if Locksley lands another job.” (link, link)

Per the deal approved today by the UConn Board of Trustees, the facility will be renamed as M&T Bank Center at Gampel Pavilion. The agreement will also help UConn expand educational opportunities, invest in student achievement and strengthen the University's impact across Connecticut and New England, while including investments in Connecticut-focused, co-branded activations and community engagements, which includes retail bank promotions, paid advertising, digital media inclusion, and other initiatives. CollegeAD reports the process to find Louisiana’s next AD is “finally underway,” adding: “At the beginning of October, Louisiana officially posted the role, redefining and relabeling the position as the Ragin' Cajuns seek a CEO of Athletics. Sources say Louisiana has formed a small search committee that has quietly met with several candidates about the opportunity. While a timeline is not clear, it's our understanding that the search could be wrapped up in the coming weeks. The Ragin' Cajuns are operating without the assistance of a search firm.” (link); Dozens & dozens of sitting ADs have used a D1.dossier to prepare for their interview. You can do the same. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey covers a multitude of topics on The Assist podcast with Kyle Tucker and CBS Sports…

➤ On the primary threat to the overall health of college athletics: "To have a Final Four and a true national championship you have to have national standards by which teams and people compete and you have to have clarity around who's recruited, who's eligible to play, not court by court, state by state, waiver by waiver."

➤ The sudden implementation of the five-year eligibility rule causing roster confusion: "What happens around us affects us directly. And what I mean by that is the five-year rule changing midstream, which we did not support the immediate effective date. I do think there's value in the age-based eligibility five-year model, but not the way it was implemented. … I think there are questions that haven’t been answered, like the access points for young people.”

➤ Why March Madness prevents a major conference breakaway from the NCAA: "I do think American culture expects March Madness to take place as it has. ... I do think one of the impediments to this departure idea is the expectation that big and small, north, south, east, west, public, private, liberal arts, public research, all come together with basketball teams and have what is really a Hoosiers type moment." (link)

MAC Commissioner Dr. Jon Steinbrecher tells Field of 68’s Rob Dauster and Jeff Goodman the NCAA “needs some limited antitrust protection from Congress” to resolve the current legal issues facing college sports. “The challenges right now where you have student-athletes challenging the fairly newly enacted age-based eligibility proposal, they’re making the case that they missed out, they were unfairly treated when, in fact, the student-athletes were given and provided everything that they had been guaranteed. Didn’t really matter where you drew the line. There was going to be a group that only had four years of eligibility and now moving forward with this new rule, we’re going to have a group that can play up to five years if they want to. … We need to get back to enforcing and having educationally sound transfer rules. I’ve spent seven years writing the rule that we enacted and actually had in place for three years. And it unified all the sports’ eligibility rules into one rule. And it really came down to you were provided with one opportunity to transfer without having to sit out a year in residence. … It’s a sound rule.” (link)

Appalachian State AD Doug Gillin reacts to James Madison’s departure for the American: “An interesting step in realignment. The American’s a great conference. [Mountaineers Senior Assoc. AD for Strategic Communications] Joey Jones is here – what’s our record against the American? 11-0. So, we haven’t lost to an American football program since we’ve been in the Sun Belt. James Madison going to the American is interesting. I think there’s different ways to look at it. If you read what’s reported, whether it’s $23M to get in, $5M to get out, that’s a $28M decision, let’s say. What we really want to focus on – and certainly we’re having conversations with everybody too – what’s the best position for Appalachian? And what’s the best funding model for Appalachian? … We need to raise more money. We need to have more assets to invest in our programs, and then if we do, where is the best place to invest those? And that’s what we’re really taking a look at right now. How can we continue to grow our programs by using those resources, which are limited at times, into our programs directly, not necessarily in any other avenue.” (link)

The American Conference has agreed to a deal to make Ecore Athletic the league’s preferred flooring provider. The deal was facilitated with RISE Ventures, and Commissioner Tim Pernetti says: “What those guys have done — [RISE Ventures CCO] Bryan [Calka] and [Director of Partnership Solutions] Julieanne DiMattia, who actually worked for me at IMG, and [Senior Director/Partnership Marketing] Kelli Sargenti, who worked for the Jets — is they’ve come in and created a revenue strategy around the league, with everything from conference naming rights, which we have in the market, to licensing and sponsorship. And in this case, as they looked at community-based organizations and also organizations that quite frankly are pretty well spread across our business. Court sports is a high-demand business, and they’re sort of across the board with their technology in college sports. RISE sourced it and brought it together.” (link)

Texas AD Chris Del Conte says UT has permanently banned a fan from its football stadium after a video of the fan giving the middle finger and shouting obscenities at Florida players on the field went viral. Del Conte: "We pride ourselves on sportsmanship and treating our opponents with respect. This individual's actions did not reflect those values or meet our standards and will not be tolerated. The matter has been addressed internally, and I want to personally apologize to the University of Florida and its entire football program. Having access to our field comes with a responsibility to represent Texas with class and respect. This individual failed to uphold that responsibility and has been permanently banned from Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium." (link)

South Carolina has sold out all 54 of the Williams-Brice Stadium Reimagination Project suites, including 30 luxury suites, 12 Founders’ Suites and 12 loge suites. Limited inventory remains for the 100 Level Club. Gamecocks AD Jeremiah Donati: “The Williams-Brice Stadium Reimagination Project has remained on schedule and on budget while achieving every goal established to date. This project represents a strategic investment in the future of Gamecock football, elevating Williams-Brice Stadium as a premier venue in college athletics and delivering an enhanced game-day experience for our student-athletes, fans and supporters. We are executing this vision with a clear focus on results, positioning the program and the stadium for sustained success.” (link)

St. Bonaventure generated a record-setting $3.4M in total fundraising during the 2025-26 academic year, surpassing its prior benchmark by over $1M, according to the athletic department's annual report. The Bonnies Athletic Fund hit its targeted milestone by generating $1.3M ($1,301,332) across a record 2,279 donors, and the annual Athletics Giving Day campaign raised $749,290 from 1,988 donors. Meanwhile, support for NIL totaled nearly $1.5M for the Men’s Basketball Excellence Fund and $60K for the Women’s Basketball Excellence Fund. Operationally, the Sixth Man Club delivered $599,200 from 40 donors to back men's basketball, and St. Bonaventure began acquiring Unfurl, LLC to consolidate its institutional NIL entity with its basketball excellence funds. Fox President of Insights and Analytics Mike Mulvihill: “More than halfway home in the CFB regular season and total viewing across all rated networks is +3%. For all the talk of chaos, real or manufactured, college football is on its way to yet another record-high season.” (link)

CBS’ Bud Elliott asks: “How much has the talent spread around in college football now that three or four teams can't hoard it all? This week, 92% of all games have a Vegas line of 2 scores or less. A decade ago, same week, that number was just 65%. That's an enormous jump.” (link)

Rockbeach Training has officially launched, giving ticket offices a place for new sales representatives to practice live phone calls with 175+ AI customers who respond in real voices, in real time, before they ever call a real fan. Rockbeach Training Founder/CEO/former Cincinnati Deputy AD/CRO Anthony Di Fino: “Make the call before you make the call. In this business, every new rep learns on real fans, because there’s nowhere else to practice. That’s the most expensive call in sports: a poorly trained intern or rep losing a fan. Now there’s somewhere else to practice.” (link)
