The 2026 State of AI in Sports Report from Teamworks and Front Office Sports reveals a gap: 90% of sports organizations expect their AI usage to grow, yet only 15% can prove measurable ROI today. Based on responses from leading professional teams, leagues, and collegiate athletic departments, the report shows what separates top performers from the rest. Deploying AI department by department yields virtually no return. Organizations with dedicated AI budgets, accountable leadership, and connected athlete records see ROI rates of up to 67%. Democrats capturing House and Senate majorities during Tuesday's midterm elections have reduced the odds the Protect College Sports Act passes during the lame-duck Congressional session to between 5% and 10%, according to Colorado State FAR/Sacred Cow BBQ publisher Kyle Saunders. More…

➤ Projections showing House Democrats securing at least 258 seats leave incoming leadership with minimal incentive to advance the Senate-passed bill or accept a compromise before January, when incoming committee chairs such as Rep. Frank Pallone (D-NJ), who previously labeled the 2025 SCORE Act “nothing more than a major giveaway” to the NCAA and the conferences, take control of markups.

➤ Outgoing House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) faces internal math challenges given a 218-member majority, compounded by at least 21 House Republicans who formally requested alterations to the bill's 20-member conference cap and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise's (R-LA) push to add an explicit ban on classifying student-athletes as employees. Amending the text would force a return to the Senate, where staff warned the legislation was “a final product” and threatened counter-amendments capping coach, AD and president salaries if conference realignment restrictions were altered.

➤ More Saunders: "When Congress can’t act collectively, the people who need rules tend to write their own, and the courts write the rest. ... So if the bill dies on January 3, college sports absolutely still gets governed in 2027. Conference commissioners, a settlement judge, state courts and a few governors will do it, one rule and one injunction at a time, and the next Congress starts over with House committees led by people who called the last version 'a giveaway.'" More takeaways following last night’s election results…

➤ Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has told staff he won’t run for House GOP leader, per Colorado State FAR/Sacred Cow BBQ publisher Kyle Saunders, who notes “the Speaker who’d have to whip the college sports bill in the lame duck has no leadership future to whip for. And its House sponsor, Michael Baumgartner (R-WA), is in a race too close to call.” (link)

➤ Punchbowl News’ Jake Sherman observes it’s “going to be REALLY hard for House Republican leadership to get people back to Washington for the lame duck.” (link)

➤ In the aftermath of Texas’ election of Democrat Gina Hinojosa to replace current Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, Sports Illustrated’s Bryan Fischer points out that higher ed board regents are appointed by the state’s governor. Texas’ Kevin Eltife, Texas A&M’s Robert Albritton and Texas Tech’s Cody Campbell, all board chairmen heavily involved in college athletics, have terms that end in February 2027. (link)

Texas Tech has tabled plans to launch a new for-profit collective designed to secure above-the-cap NIL deals for student-athletes across its athletic programs, per the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal's Don Williams. When the subject was discussed back in the spring, Red Raiders AD Kirby Hocutt talked openly about the need to develop more above-the-cap revenue, while noting such a collective would have to be for-profit, with a product for sale to the general public that could engage student-athletes through NIL deals that would pass muster with the College Sports Commission. Hocutt: “I think it was just ultimately as you looked at the totality of the landscape and exactly what deliverables there would have to be with a collective, it just didn't fit at this particular time for Texas Tech athletics. … I wouldn't say in the future we've taken it off the table, but it's not been something we've activated on since we talked about it last spring." (link)

Texas AD Chris Del Conte joined host John Mitchell on the Learning From Experts podcast to discuss department standards and more. Here are some takeaways…

➤ Establishing a national program standard: "The standard is that we have a top-five athletic program. Every program is funded [as a] top-five program in the country. There's no stair-stepping at Texas. Every single student-athlete at the University of Texas is on a full ride starting this coming year. If we fund, we support, and we give you all the tools necessary, that's our expectation. It doesn’t happen every year. It’s called sport, but that's our expectations and our goals. We know that we may fall short and some years we may win it, but you’ve got to have a standard to shoot for."

➤ Cultivating an internal David mentality within a Goliath brand: "In society, if you believe in David and Goliath, Texas is never going to be David. You're always going to be Goliath, but you’ve got to have David principles in your core to make sure that you are successful. If you always think you're Goliath and your ego is there, someone's going to take you down. I think our coaches and student-athletes understand that yes, we're going to get their best shot, but we have the fortitude, the understanding, the leadership, the coaching in that mix that allows them to compete at the highest level. Outside of our walls, you’re never David." (link)

Louisville AD Josh Heird addressed the rising expectations surrounding the Cards’ football program after Football HC Jeff Brohm received an eight-year, $64M contract extension back in April. “The amount of pressure to win now has ratcheted up so significantly because the investment level has increased so significantly. And that’s what’s happened here.” Estimates published by The Athletic place the 2026 UofL football roster budget between $22M and $25M, ranking somewhere between 35th to 40th nationally. Heird to WDRB’s Eric Crawford: “Yes, there is a sense of urgency, and I’m not saying there wasn’t one before, but that pressure gets even greater when that investment level is at certain levels. And I can promise you, there’s other coaches on this campus that feel that same pressure.” (link)

UMass inks an eight-year deal making Under Armour the official outfitter and supplier of uniforms, apparel, footwear and accessories for all 21 varsity sport programs and athletics staff, starting July 1, 2027. (link)

Arizona’s men's and women’s basketball jersey patch sponsorship deal with Carvana is reportedly worth a total of $12.75M over four seasons, per Tucson.com’s Bruce Pascoe, who notes UA is set to receive $3M this season and next, $3.25M in 2028-29 and $3.5M in 2029-30. The Wildcats are now expected to reap about $1M as its share of the Big 12's Monster Energy deal, an average of about $1.85M from Alkeme for naming rights to McKale Center and an average value of $3.19M over the next four seasons from the Carvana deal. VCU is continuing its collaboration with VCU Health, reaffirming the brand as the official healthcare partner of Rams Athletics. In addition, the academic medical and health system will become the school’s first jersey patch partner for all varsity programs and the initial partner with on-court logos inside the Stuart C. Siegel Center, beginning this fall. (link)

CBS Sports’ David Cobb reports that while non-conference rematches will still be avoided in the NCAA Tournament Opening and First Rounds, with expansion to 76 teams, language around avoiding them in the Second Round is no longer part of official NCAA guidance. (link)

A Celebration of Life for college athletics leader Doug Woolard will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2026, from 2-4 p.m., at the Clearwater Beach Sheraton Resort on Sand Key in Clearwater Beach, Fla. (link)

Chalk North Dakota State’s successful “NDSU Giving Day,” that brought in just over $500K in 24 hours from 261 donors, to the FBS/Mountain West moves and to a more accepting attitude of NIL and the Green and Gold Fund, per InForum’s Jeff Kolpack. NDSU Deputy AD Derrick Lang: “I absolutely do believe that. … Hopefully we’ve done a better job of the messaging on how those dollars are being used. Our kids are earning those opportunities through playing time, doing the right thing in the classroom, doing the right thing in the community so it was new for us too. We have a long way to go but we’re seeing people come around on it.” If NDSU’s move to FBS required its fan base to help pay for it, it appears that is happening as the giving day success comes on the heels of a “701 Day” that raised over $10.1M in early August, with over $29M having been collected toward a $50M “Climb the Mountain” campaign goal. The idea behind college sports memorabilia startup CollectU was born out of the scheduled demolition of Northwestern’s old Ryan Field, per SBJ’s Matt Fortuna. In the facility to secure some small artifacts for the Ryan family, founder Jay Sharman asked a worker on-site what would happen to everything in the stadium. When told it was getting bulldozed, he asked if he could take it. “I don’t see why not,” the worker told him. CollectU launched three months later in partnership with former TrueNU collective leader Jacob Schmidt. The company now has 10 school clients, a full-time staff, a retail store with plans for more, heavyweight investors and advisors that include former Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany. “This is university-owned property that is either going to be in a dump or in a warehouse, and it’s monetizing that in an organized way to add value at a time when everybody’s seeking added value. So I think it’s a good, simple concept where execution is really important, and I think they have demonstrated the ability to execute.” (link)

The College Football Playoff Selection Committee released the first set of rankings for this season. Miami (FL) tops the pack, followed by Georgia, Utah, Indiana, Alabama, Kentucky, Texas, UCLA, BYU, Ole Miss, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Tennessee, LSU, Texas Tech, Wake Forest, Houston, Missouri, Iowa, USC, South Carolina, Arizona, Oregon, Florida and Boise State. (link); Here’s everything Arkansas AD/Committee Chair Hunter Yurachek had to say about the rankings. (link)

Democrats won back control of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives in last night’s midterm elections, securing an estimated 255 seats in the House, well beyond the 218 needed to become the majority party, according to NBC’s Scott Wong. (link); As for what it means for college sports, former Fox Sports President Bob Thompson offers one perspective: “[The Protect College Sports Act] had House issues before today. Those issues just got a whole lot worse today.” (link); Also of note, former Texas Tech/Auburn/Ole Miss Football HC Tommy Tuberville was elected as the new Governor of Alabama. (link)

Florida State Seminole Boosters CEO Stephen Ponder explains in a video to fans that “we’re continuing expansion into new areas of business development, corporate partnerships, media and fan engagement. And we’re bringing all of those efforts together under one plan. We have a strong foundation. And we’re committed to doing our part to help Florida State win championships. Now, as the university prepares to welcome its next head football coach, roster success remains a priority. We’re excited to partner with The Battle’s End on the work they are doing. Today, every alum and fan has an opportunity to be a part of the future of FSU football by supporting The Battle’s End. You will hear more about an expanded partnership between Seminole Boosters and The Battle’s End as our work continues.” (link)

Bruin Capital CEO George Pyne appeared on the Varsity podcast with Puck’s John Ourand to analyze the shifting media landscape, soaring franchise valuations, and the fragmented state of collegiate athletics, among other topics. Here’s what’s most important for you…

➤ How would Pyne fix college sports? “You’d want to be able to restrict a player’s movement, so you either get an exemption from Congress or you collectively bargain. You need a thoughtful approach to the geographic distribution of the product. The Pac-12 was the Conference of Champions for 110 years, and it no longer exists. … You’re heading toward consolidation, and a lot of great schools will be left out. You need a thoughtful approach to the teams, the players, the coaches. And you have to remember that players are there to get an education, so I would keep the integrity of that. The Protect College Sports Act isn’t perfect, but it’s a good approach.

➤ On why private equity continues to invest in sports teams despite high entry costs: "When you survey the world, people who make these investments have determined this is a very safe and durable place to put their money over a 30- or 40-year period. ... Credit to the U.S. leagues, they have very conservative debt rules, so the capitalization of sports from a league perspective is very safe. Nobody’s over-leveraged; you’re not going to see teams going bankrupt."

➤ On the streaming platform showing the most momentum for future media rights deals: "I don’t know whether one’s better than the other. But you feel momentum for YouTube and YouTube TV. If I were a league entering a long-term contract, I’d really have to consider my strategy with that particular platform, because user-generated content keeps building momentum.” (link)

TCU AD Mike Buddie visited the Competitive Kindness Podcast with Dr. Rob Clark to discuss leadership philosophies, navigating roster revenue sharing, the connection between athletic success, university enrollment and more. Here are some takeaways…

➤ Athletics serving as a primary university enrollment driver: "I'm really fortunate to be on a team led by a chancellor who clearly understands the value of athletics, so much so that athletics is identified as one of the four key pillars to our strategic plan called LEAD ON, where between now and 2035, we want to grow enrollment and the key driver to successful enrollment increase is success in athletics. You could argue that the TCU chancellor is my biggest donor and a great partner in communicating to faculty and staff and trustees that the most successful way to get us to achieve our goals is to allow our revenue sports to flourish and put us on the map."

➤ Lessons he’s learned on delegating internal execution: "I will say one of the most valuable lessons I had came from my time at [Army] West Point. … I got to know Marty Dempsey, who was the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and a legendary four-star general. I asked him about ‘how does he empower people,’ and he said the three Ds, because everything in the army has an initial and some sort of abbreviation. I said, 'What are the three Ds?' And he said, 'Decide, delegate, and disappear.' So as a leader, you have to make the decision. And so for me, the decision might be, 'Hey, we're going to distribute $21M of rev share and then delegate it to someone whom I trust and that will get the job done and then disappear.'” (link)

Despite marketing the planned $288M 865 Neyland entertainment district as "100% privately funded," Tennessee is financing the project's $83M garage through state school bonds, according to Sportico's Daniel Libit. The development calls for a 24-story condo-hotel anchored by the garage, with UT assuming full debt obligations via the Tennessee State School Bond Authority—amounting to an estimated $7.3M in annual debt service at an assumed 7.85% interest rate, or $5.4M at 5%. While Vols President Randy Boyd and AD Danny White maintained the project relies strictly on private capital, agreements for future ground rents—projected to deliver $1.5M in combined annual base rent plus at least 3% of revenues over $25M—remain non-binding, leaving the university liable for the debt even if the district stalls or gets canceled. Addressing the financing before the board of trustees executive committee, UT System CFO David Miller: "It is very important to note that while the university has no money in the hotel or entertainment district, we will be financing with state school bonds. ... so there is no university tuition, taxpayer dollars or other campus funds supporting the parking." The Big 12 will evaluate its officiating program this week following multiple admitted errors during BYU victories over Notre Dame and Arizona State, according to The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner. The conference acknowledged prematurely ending the Cougars' 28-24 win over the Irish when the stadium clock still showed 0:01, and later confirmed a replay review incorrectly awarded a first-quarter touchdown against the Sun Devils. On3’s Daniel Hager notes the scrutiny coincides with the league's recent decision to build a new Replay Operations Center in Irving, Texas, ahead of the 2027 season to modernize game management and provide live broadcast audio feeds during reviews. Abilene Christian and Tarleton State’s 106-year-old football rivalry will officially be known as “The Hundred-Mile Showdown," starting with this Saturday’s match-up in Stephenville, Texas. Tarleton State AD Steve Uryasz: “Every good rivalry has a strong name. The sometimes-used former name, the I-20 Rivalry, created confusion geographically, and both institutions wanted to adopt a name that is comprehensive – unique, catchy, and logical. The Hundred-Mile Showdown encapsulates all of that." (link)

Versant, the NBCUniversal spinoff vehicle housing linear cable networks such as USA Network, Golf Channel, CNBC and MS NOW, reported declines across pay-TV distribution revenue (down 5.8% to $935M) and advertising (down 5.3%) in its quarterly earnings report, per Awful Announcing’s Drew Lerner. While the company's Platforms segment, which includes digital assets like Fandango and GolfNow, increased revenue by 9.6% to $245M, TV segments still drive roughly 85% of the company’s total income. Versant CEO Mark Lazarus told investors in an earnings call that he sees “opportunity” ahead to capitalize on other networks’ austerity when it comes to sports rights. Lerner: "Networks looking to secure the NFL are positioning themselves to save money elsewhere, likely by downsizing other areas of their sports portfolios. Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch, for instance, has already said his company plans to ‘rebalance’ its sports rights portfolio to afford the expected NFL increase. ... Versant is well positioned to bid on rights that other networks and streamers decide they can do without. That said, don’t expect the company to compete at the top end of the sports rights market." TikTok is expanding beyond shoulder programming and alt feeds by serving full, primary event broadcasts directly within users' algorithmic feeds. JohnWallStreet notes that with the success of Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) broadcast of its August 21 card featuring Amanda Serrano, billed as the first championship boxing production to air live on TikTok, it’s believed the experience will prompt the social media platform to add more live sporting events and that other social discovery platforms could follow suit, potentially creating several new distributional channels for rights owners. Here’s more…

➤ MVP Chief Strategy Officer Mitch Glaser: “The same algorithmic feed that created countless new celebrities & consumer businesses is now coming for live content. This is beyond disruptive. We gave them the full show––the main event, everything. [And] it performed incredibly well because the TikTok community discovered our broadcast by simply scrolling their main feed. Over 100M impressions and incredible engagement amongst a demo that was 68% under the age of 35.”

➤ For the first time, someone on the platform “will be scrolling like normal and land in a live sports broadcast,” Glaser said. “This changes streaming [on] social platforms from easy to access and free to view to easy to access, free to view and highly discoverable. … Eventually, I would expect that Instagram, X and YouTube will lean in more as well.” (link)
