Over the past three years, Miami (OH) AD David Sayler has spearheaded a donor-backed effort to position the RedHawks as a potential realignment candidate in case the ACC, American or another higher-tier league comes calling, per The Athletic’s Cameron Teague Robinson. Supported by high-profile alumni, including Los Angeles Rams HC Sean McVay, Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol, Enterprise CEO Chrissy Taylor and more, Miami has managed to secure matching university scholarship funds, launched construction on a $281M basketball arena and built an estimated $6M football roster budget. Three years ago, Sayler stood up in an MAC ADs meeting in Cleveland and said: “I told everybody we’re coming and we’re going to elevate the MAC, I hope you all come with. It’s a rising tide lifts all boats theory. I can’t speak for what’s happening in other MAC schools, but we are not just OK. … You can’t be afraid to say what you want to do. Because then you got to live every day waking up thinking, how am I going to get there? I’ve got my name on it now. Like I told the public, this is where we’re going, and now I got to go do it.” (link)
Kansas State AD Gene Taylor sat down with KSNT News’ K Nation to discuss the rise of general manager roles across college athletics, benchmarking for success and more. D1.takeaways…
➤ On the emergence of GMs in college programs: “I think the general manager can come in, be a buffer between the head coach and the athlete and the agent and take that off the coach's plate. … It really takes the pressure off the coach and gives the coach the ability to focus. … Let the GM handle all the negotiations, behind the scenes stuff, and then he'll obviously make the final decision. As head coaches they've realized this is a valuable position for us to have.”
➤ On the football jersey patch partnership with local company, Purple Wave Auction: “As you go deep into the [College Football Playoffs], if you do a more national brand, you could have limitations for postseason because if you do a sponsor that has competition with a CFP playoff sponsor or a NCAA basketball playoff sponsor. So, we kind of focused on a local brand so we could carry it through the playoffs if they wanted [and] if we had that opportunity or postseason.”
➤ Evaluating the department's overall competitive benchmarks: “We always want to be successful. We always want to be in a position where we're at least in the middle of the Big 12. And if you're in the middle of the Big 12, no matter what that sport is, you're probably going to get in the postseason. ... Our conference is so difficult and competitive nationwide that If you're in the upper half of the Big 12, you're going to get in a postseason tournament. And then once you get in the postseason, you can make a deep run. ... If we can do that on a regular basis then I would say we’ve had a successful year.” (link)
The FCS Oversight Committee has joined its FBS peers in asking the DI Cabinet to amend a July Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee proposal to expand scouting restrictions to include FCS football. Originally designed to prevent men’s basketball staff members from attending other DI preseason, regular-season or conference tournament games, with limited exceptions, the revised measure would prohibit FCS football staff from scouting other DI contests in person, including those involving teams that aren’t future opponents. The proposal outlined exceptions for FCS football staff members that include: attending the FCS national championship game and the College Football Playoff national championship game; SWAC and MEAC members being permitted to attend the Celebration Bowl; and SWAC school members being allowed to attend the league’s championship game. The DI Cabinet must review and vote on the amended proposal during its October 6-7 meeting prior to it going into effect. The committee also voted to amend its out-of-season activities proposal to allow on-field practices and skill instruction to begin February 1 instead of January 1, as originally proposed, preventing overlap with football’s notification-of-transfer period and the start of the regular academic term following the conclusion of the season. Gonzaga inks a deal to have AI global trade network Altana serve as the official men’s basketball jersey patch partner for the 2026-27 season. The sponsorship was secured through Learfield’s Gonzaga Sports Properties. (link)
Mississippi Valley State men's basketball’s grueling stretch of 16 straight road games to christen the upcoming 2026-27 campaign is projected to bring in almost $1M in guarantee payments for the athletic department, per HBCU Gameday’s Wali Pitt, who underscores the challenge the team faces in earning those checks while trying to find its footing under new HC Mike Davis. The season-opening, 14-game non-conference road slate includes match-ups against high-major hosts Oklahoma, Arkansas, Michigan, UConn, Mississippi State, Ohio State, Texas Tech and Baylor. Guaranteed revenue from such contests is critical for the program as a Data Driven HBCU financial analysis indicated MVSU’s athletic department relied on $1.35M in guarantee payouts across all sports in FY25, representing 24.4% of its $5.6M in total revenue. Pitt adds: “National attention may follow Valley’s road results, especially against the biggest names on the schedule. Those scores will tell part of the story. They will not explain why the games were scheduled or what the Delta Devils are trying to build through them. ... The road trip helps fund the program’s present. What Davis and his players make of it will help determine its future." (link)
Highlighting the premium placed on dynamic passing attacks, Collegiate Sports Connect has released a new Coach Intel report benchmarking guaranteed compensation for Division I football wide receivers coaches. The data underscores a massive financial priority for the Power 4, where the median salary hits $462,500 and top-tier assistants command coordinator-level pay between $800K and $850K. Within the autonomous leagues, the SEC leads the charge in investment with a median of $662,500, notably outpacing the Big Ten ($450K) and nearly doubling the Big 12 ($357,500). This top-heavy investment creates a monumental divide across the FBS landscape, as the Power 4 baseline is nearly four times that of their Group of 6 counterparts ($120K median) and dwarfs the FCS median of $61,800. Athletic departments can utilize the full database to review individual contracts, evaluate conference benchmarks, and strategically budget to secure elite perimeter leadership. Take a look at the full report. (link)
Former Auburn football player personnel scouting assistant David Rudolph Jenrath turned himself in to authorities on Monday, after warrants were issued for his arrest on charges of theft of trade secrets and computer tampering, which are both felonies. Per ESPN’s Mark Schlabach and Alex Scarborough, the charges stem from an incident near the university’s football and baseball stadiums – where a "business reported that sensitive information was stolen from the business and distributed to their competitors. The business reported that one of their competitors received the information and turned it over to them." Jenrath allegedly sent material related to AU’s recruiting evaluations to multiple schools, but didn’t include material related to Auburn's NIL, revenue sharing distributions or its playbooks. He’s also accused of "disclosing, using, controlling or taking computer programs and data with the intent to harass Auburn University Athletics by disclosing trade secrets and transmitted those secrets without the owners' consent." While a police report failed to identify the schools that allegedly received the stolen information from Jenrath, a complaint alleges the incident occurred on July 19 at the Auburn Athletics Complex. Eighth Judicial Circuit Court of Florida Judge George Wright has awarded Florida men’s basketball student-athlete Denzel Aberdeen a temporary injunction, granting him immediate eligibility to play for the Gators during the 2026-27 campaign. Per Sandberg Phoenix Sports Law Team Lead Neil W. Blackmon, “Judge Wright found that Aberdeen is a third-party beneficiary under the 2026-27 Manual, which is a contract. Under the plain, unambiguous text of the contract and NCAA bylaw 12.6, Aberdeen is eligible to play.” Boise State Assoc. Professor Sam Ehrlich calls Judge Wright’s not granting a “mandatory injunction,” but instead finding that the status quo based on the plain text of the rule is that Aberdeen is eligible, a “massive finding.” (link, link)

PCSA Passage…
➤ The Protect College Sports Act has passed the Senate by a vote of 77-22. During last night’s proceedings, the body adopted a number of amendments including increasing the cap on Power 4 conference membership from 19 to 20 members, limiting the scope of federal preemption to allow for personal injury claims and disclosure of funding from persons “relating to intercollegiate athletics from a foreign government, a foreign adversary, a state-owned enterprise, or a sovereign wealth fund” in excess of $600. (link)
➤ Will it pass the House? “That bill is dead,” one Democratic House member tells Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who notes the bill faces significant opposition in the lower chamber, where leaders maintain no plans exist to consider the legislation before the November 3 midterms. Still, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) expressed confidence that House Speaker Mike Johnson could take up the measure prior to the election or during the five-week lame-duck session from Nov. 9 to Dec. 17, but House staff members contend the bill will not advance.
➤ A congressional expert explains why: “The House doesn't just take bills because they have passed the Senate. This is personal. Ted Cruz is holding up several House bills in the Senate." Dellenger adds: “It’s personal for another reason: House lawmakers poured years and resources into a separate college sports bill, the House-authored SCORE Act, which failed to gain the necessary votes in the chamber twice last fall and again this past spring. The SCORE Act, friendlier to the NCAA and authored by Republicans, did not even garner enough Republican support. (link)
➤ The passage occurred after several amendments were voted on, including one from Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ), whose amendment would’ve placed restrictions on coaches that mirror the bill's athlete limitations, including, per Dellenger: “(1) requiring them to sit a season for 2nd job move; (2) subjecting their NIL deals to NIL Go; (3) salary cap of $5M; (4) buyout cap of 1 year salary.” (link)
➤ Dellenger also notes that Senator Ashley Moody's (R-FL) amendment to “move the power conference cap from 19 to 20 schools is adopted by voice vote.” (link)
America East Commissioner Brad Walker joined the Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman and Rob Dauster to discuss his role as chair of the 20-member NCAA Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee and the conference's strategies for navigating the modern college basketball ecosystem. Here are the goods…
➤ Upside of expanding the NCAA Tournament for mid-majors: "It cuts both ways. I mean it's a great opportunity for us to win a game if we're having a year where we're going to be in that 15, 16 range. That's always great for the league. ... But the opportunity for revenue and then [to] win a game and just kind of get some momentum going for future years, the expansion is definitely helpful in that way for leagues like ours."
➤ Maintaining a campus-hosted conference tournament: "My membership is feeling the same way. As you can imagine, If you know only one bid's likely coming out of your league, the opportunity to tie your regular season performance to who gets to host the first and the quarterfinals and then the semifinals based on your seed – it's a great feeling to know you're going to play in front of your home fans if you've earned it during the regular season."
➤ Balancing potential summer basketball schedules with student-athlete burnout: "There has to be some kind of break in there and something that makes sense for the student-athlete to where they're not being overly committed to anything during the summer where they may have different things that they want to do on top of this. But look, let's get this straight. When we're talking to student-athletes, they also want to play, they want to get better.” (link)
Virginia Tech AD Brian White announced a ticket price increase across football and basketball aimed at generating $20M in additional annual revenue and expanding the season-ticket holder base from 21K to 30K, according to The Virginian-Pilot's David Teel, who reports football season tickets will cost $350 each starting next season, with required "Invest to Win" seat commitments ranging from $95 to $3,910 per ticket—building on a $229.2M four-year campus support pledge approved by the Board of Visitors last September. Basketball season tickets will cost $250 to $850 with $25 to $350 seat commitments. Teel also reports White established an Investors Society requiring a $50K minimum gift. White: "Our vision is ambitious. Virginia Tech athletics will operate with a top-10 mentality. Success will not always come in a straight line, but our standard will remain the same: pursue championships, invest strategically and provide our student-athletes and coaches with the resources to compete at the highest level. A top-10 mentality requires top-10 resources. And top-10 resources require a financial model built to support them." (link)
James Madison updated its campus master plan request for proposal, increasing its target for new student housing to 3K additional beds by fall 2029, per the Daily News-Record’s Shane Mettlen, who notes that’s up from an initial target of 1K beds by fall 2028. Key athletic and infrastructure plan highlights include potential expansions to Bridgeforth Stadium; a new mixed-use entertainment district outside the facility; apartments and dorms; and the potential demolition of Godwin Hall, which currently houses the JMU natatorium, athletic offices and classroom space, to make way for a new University Park pool and tennis facility. Under the envisioned partnership, James Madison expects the private developer to bear the majority of cost, schedule and operating risk while creating new revenue-generating opportunities for the university. Seven anonymous Arizona State men’s hockey student-athletes submitted a 26-page letter to ASU President Michael Crow requesting that HC Greg Powers and his staff be placed on administrative leave following the August 20 workout that left teammate Matthew Mayich on life support, according to The Athletic's Katie Strang, Adam Kilgore, and Nathan Fenno. The players, who represent roughly a quarter of the roster, disputed some findings of an initial internal review conducted by ASU EVP James Rund, including the frequency with which they were allowed water and the timing of when Mayich first showed signs of struggle. In the letter, they urge ASU to refer its police investigation to an outside agency, request immunity from retaliation and suggest former Phoenix Coyotes star Shane Doan as a potential Interim HC. From the letter: "We should not have to choose between telling the truth about August 20 and keeping what we have worked our whole lives for." Strang, et al. also note that the players say additional teammates share their views but did not join the letter because they have similar concerns about reprisal. (link)

Houston AD Eddie Nuñez tells the Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte that the school worked with the Big 12 a year in advance about this Saturday’s game being at night to help accommodate a Hall of Honor event on Friday night. Despite that, the Cougars were given the 11 AM TV slot against UCF. Nuñez: “It’s unfortunate. I just want to make sure that our fans know that we will continue to work with the conference office and our television partners to get them to understand that, for us, it's important to not have every game be a day game. Our team has earned it. They are a top 20 program and they should have the opportunity to build for our fans to have night games, not just continual day games as we’ve seen here.” Duarte notes UH has played just one Saturday night conference home game since 2024. ESPN’s Jeff Borzello “received further clarification on what the Big Ten’s new rule could potentially mean for guys who played in the NBA Summer League. They’re classifying an NBA contract as an ‘Exhibit 10, a Two-Way Contract, or any agreement providing compensation above expenses and a per diem.’” (link)
Eastern Kentucky unveiled an updated look for its Colonel logo after a collaboration with Torch Creative. Colonels AD Kyle Moats: “Our new Colonel logo pays respect to the tradition that makes Eastern Kentucky University special, while giving us a strong, modern and unique identity that our student-athletes, alumni and fans can be proud of.” (link)

Marucci Sports is once again privately owned after Fox Factory Holding Corp. sold the baseball bat manufacturer to a group led by Marucci Founder/CEO Kurt Ainsworth for $225M, per Nola.com’s Timothy Boone, who notes the company plans to remain in Baton Rouge, with existing brands and leadership in place. In a statement, Ainsworth: “Having the opportunity to lead Marucci back into founder-led, private ownership is incredibly meaningful to me. Marucci started in my backyard in 2004 with a simple goal: to make the products players want and need to be successful. That same goal has guided us for more than twenty-two years, and it will remain at the center of everything we do.” Fox Factory acquired Marucci back in November 2023 for $572M, but began looking to sell in February after not bringing in the expected financial returns.
