“If we get to another football portal window and the marker increases another 50%, 60%, 70%, like we’ve been seeing every year, you’re going to be looking at (rosters costing between $80M and $90M) for football. Only one team can win the National Championship. How much do you want to pay to have a shot of doing that every year?”

Semafor’s Burgess Everett with the latest from the Senate as the Protect College Sports Act pushes on: “The price for Senate Republicans to finish the college sports bill quickly this week might be a roll call vote on allowing NCAA athletes to organize. It could take all week for the Senate to process the bipartisan college sports bill. To speed things up, Democrats want amendment votes, most notably one that would allow college athletes to collectively bargain. The amendment, from Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), would replace a portion of the bill that is neutral on employment status with Murphy’s College Athlete Right to Organize Act. … Murphy also has amendments that would subject coaches to the same transfer portal restrictions as athletes and protect athletes who report physical or sexual misconduct.” (link)
Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger refers to Sen. Chris Murphy’s (D-CT) amendment to replace a portion of the PCSA with his College Athlete Right to Organize Act as “an interesting proposal,” but notes “there are few if any bill changes expected. The last motion got 77 votes - 17 more than needed for passage, which is expected by Friday. There is little reason to compromise as expediting a vote isn't necessary. Context here matters. Because of the high procedural support - 77+ right now - detractors hold little leverage to push lawmakers to adopt or even vote on amendments. Time is the only real leverage point: Detractors can slow down the process to possibly push a final vote into early next week.” (link)
The Overby Center for Southern Journalism and Politics recently hosted an athletics panel discussion titled “College Athletics: It’s a Whole New Ballgame,” featuring Ole Miss AD Keith Carter, Yahoo Sports Senior Writer Ross Dellenger, and Mississippi Today Sports Columnist Rick Cleveland. The discussion centered on rising football roster costs, featured updates on the Protect College Sports Act and more. Key takeaways…
➤ Carter on balancing revenue sharing with market stability: “If we get to another football portal window and the marker increases another 50%, 60%, 70%, like we’ve been seeing every year, you’re going to be looking at (rosters costing between $80M and $90M) for football. Only one team can win the National Championship. How much do you want to pay to have a shot of doing that every year? … I think that there's definitely some change that is needed, some guardrails that are needed. I am a big advocate for paying the players. I think they deserve part of the revenue we earn. At the same time, you know, if we can get some of the toothpaste back in the tube and try to get stability in the marketplace, that would be huge.”
➤ Dellenger on where things stand with the PCSA: “So this bill will pass the Senate next week, but then it goes to the House. They like to call it, on the hill, a circus, and it's just kind of an unruly chamber of various cliques. And it's sort of hard to predict how people are going to vote, no matter their party in the House, especially with a bill that is so specific.” (link, link)
Athletic departments and conference offices are scrambling to restructure their 2027 nonconference football slates after the NCAA's approval of a permanent 14-week regular season schedule, per The Athletic's Scott Dochterman, as the calendar shift has moved next year’s kickoff to August 28, 2027 (Week 0). Here’s what you need to know…
➤ SEC Asst. Commissioner for Network Relations Matt Evans: “That’s all kind of a giant puzzle to try to solve. The biggest thing from my perspective is those first few weeks of the season, we want to try to get what I would call even. So, an even number of teams that need matchups, because the last thing we would want to do is to give one of our teams a bye week on Labor Day weekend.”
➤ The new schedule has prompted leagues such as the SEC, Big Ten, ACC and Big 12 to insert early-season conference matchups in Weeks 2 and 3 to avoid early September idle weeks and ensure appealing TV slates. Some Power 4 teams still don’t have a nonconference P4 opponent locked in for 2027, but that could change if the College Football Playoff were to expand for the 2027 season.
➤ ACC SVP of Football Michael Strickland: “If the format goes to 24 (teams), that should mean that there’s less pressure to get to 10 or 11 wins to be in the field. I would think across the board for all conferences, all teams, that they would feel more comfortable with that plus-one scheduling requirement to 10 Power 4 games.” (link)

In addition, the AI-powered pickleball training and player-development platform will serve as a jersey patch partner of FIU tennis and golf, with its branding featured on competition uniforms throughout their respective seasons. MIT (DIII) claimed the No. 1 spot among national universities in the U.S. News & World Report 2027 Best Colleges rankings, dethroning Princeton, which fell to No. 2. Harvard rated third and Yale was fourth, while Cal Tech (DIII) and Stanford deadlocked in fifth. Public university stalwarts Cal and UCLA tied for the No. 1 public school spot, with Michigan, Virginia and North Carolina rounding out the top five, respectively. Overall survey participation among ranked institutions dropped to 73% (down from 79% last year), though data was returned by 99 of the top 100 national universities and 98 of the top 100 national liberal arts colleges. A major category overhaul driven by the 2025 Carnegie Classification update shifted multiple institutions and allowed newly eligible specialized schools to enter the rankings. The set of ranking factors for this year’s edition had one alteration with postgraduate earnings by major replaced graduate indebtedness at 5% of the overall ranking formula. (link)
UTEP registered its second consecutive record fundraising year by bringing in more than $12M in revenue during FY26 to surpass its previous best mark (FY25) by over $4K. Spearheaded by the Miner Athletic Club, all-time highs were established in the number of gifts (9,917, a 45.9% increase) and donors (3,247, 20.7% increase), while major gifts of $25K-or-more climbed to a record 63. Overall, there were 16 commitments of $100K or more, including major gifts from Paul and Alejandra de la Vega Foster ($2.5M), Bob McFadden ($1M), Frank Sloan ($1M) and Tropicana Homes ($500K). Helping fuel the fundraising success were campaigns for Reach The Peak (Mountain West readiness and competitive success) and the Memorial Gym Renovation Project. (link)

Made possible through a $100K donation from Tracy and John Sellers, all participating programs are eligible to receive allocations, ensuring equal access to incentives regardless of conference affiliation or 2026 performance. In addition to the tournament champion receiving $50K, there are more targeted incentives totaling $50K that will be distributed across three distinct award tracks: “Innovate” – rewards team statistical leaders (two offense & two defense); “Inspire” – presented to the program which best embodies sportsmanship, integrity and the mission of the NFCA; and “Coach” – presented in recognition of outstanding coaching performance, strategic execution and overall team leadership. While the Protect College Sports Act appears set to clear the Senate this week, questions remain about whether the House will return from its early recess to take up the legislation, and one lobbyist who worked on the PCSA tells The Hill’s Dominick Mastrangelo: “We remain pretty optimistic the House is going to make this a priority when they come back. The only reason you wouldn’t do that is because of sour grapes. They owe it to the American people, and especially for Republicans, to the expectations of the president on top of that.” If the lower chamber does come back, work remains to convince Congress members on both sides, including Chip Roy (R-TX), who says: “Ted’s got some good things in the bill and I’ve got some things that are concerning. We’ve got to do something, but it has to be sufficient enough. But right now, the last thing we need to do is campaign on sports when we need to do the SAVE [America] Act and cut spending.” (link)
The Senate Judiciary Committee has scheduled for tomorrow a hearing titled "Hearings To Examine Standing Up For Women In Sports, Focusing On Ensuring Opportunity, Fairness And Safety For Female Athletes." The hearing currently lists no witnesses, per Legis1, which also reports: “Fox Corp. filed a lobbying disclosure for Q4 2025 reporting $1.49M in lobbying activity and listed the Student Athlete Fairness and Enforcement Act (S2932) as legislation lobbied on, and filed a lobbying disclosure for Q3 2025 reporting $1.09M in lobbying activity and listed the Student Athlete Fairness and Enforcement Act (S2932) as legislation lobbied on; Fox Corp. lobbied on issues related to online sports betting in Q4 2025. American Gaming Association filed a lobbying disclosure for Q1 2026 reporting $730K in lobbying activity and lobbied on issues related to the PROTECT Student Athletes Act (H.R. 1552) in Q1 2026. American Gaming Association filed a lobbying disclosure for Q2 2026 reporting $660K in lobbying expenditures and lists the PROTECT Student Athletes Act (H.R. 1552) as a specific issue lobbied.” (link)
Freshly minted Old Dominion AD Tim House says he believes his “background is more impactful here than in the Big Ten because there’s so much TV money at that level. Whereas, my ability to come in and just be the best version of me and do what I’ve done well in terms of donor relationships, revenue-generation relationships, multi-media partnerships, I think if I can take a lot of what I learned at that level, it actually makes a greater impact here. You find an extra, $3M, $4M, $5M a year in fundraising dollars here, you’re talking about winning the Sun Belt in everything. You’re putting yourself in position. You still have to have the culture, still have to have the coaches, but those resources make a greater impact here.” He adds: “All the bones are here … but I think we can take it to the next level.” (link)
As Utah State AD Cameron Walker approaches his one-year anniversary in the role, he talks with The Utah Statesman’s Mark Greenwood about his experience so far and his plans for moving forward. Key takeaways…
➤ Prioritizing athlete feedback during coaching searches: "You have to get it right for the student-athletes, and so you start and you end with the student-athletes. … I don’t ask them for names — I ask them for qualities. ... We want to win right away, but the key is how do we build this program and create a sustainable one, and how do we have someone that will mesh with what they’re wanting?"
➤ On facing backlash for displacing the student section to create courtside seating: "I had to make a tough call on changing some things, but it’s hard for me to go out and ask people for hard-earned money. It’s hard for me to go to the university and ask for help when there’s things within our power that we could do that had seven-figure consequences, and we weren’t willing to take those because I might get flak. Sometimes in leadership you have to make hard choices, and I think as we weighed the things, this was going to allow us to remain a competitive basketball team." (link)
The James Madison Board of Visitors reviewed athletic department updates and facility master plans at its latest meeting. The board also addressed data showing last season's College Football Playoff appearance against Oregon generated nearly $300M in earned-media value across 10K mentions and drew 4.1M viewers. The Daily News-Record’s Shane Mettlen notes the exposure arrives as the university targets an enrollment increase from its current 23,167 students to 30K by 2040. Additionally, Dukes AD Matt Roan confirmed the athletic department finished paying its share of the House settlement and outlined requests for proposals to redevelop the district surrounding Bridgeforth Stadium, which could feature a stadium expansion, an indoor practice facility, and the razing of Godwin Hall, the current home of the swimming and diving program. Board Athletics Committee Chair John Lynch also noted that football has sold out of season tickets for the fourth straight season. (link)
Mississippi Valley State AD Dr. Alecia Shields-Gadson has issued a statement through X apologizing for what she calls a “lackluster game day experience” during last weekend’s home football loss to Delta State at Rice-Totten Stadium that reads, in part: “We hold ourselves to a high standard, and this weekend we fell short of delivering the vibrant, seamless, and exciting environment that our loyal alumni, students, and community deserve. From operational delays to the overall stadium atmosphere, the experience did not reflect the true spirit of MVSU football. … We are already reviewing every aspect of our game day operations to ensure that our next home game provides the premier experience you expect and deserve. Thank you for your unmatched loyalty, your patience, and your continued support of our student-athletes. We are committed to getting this right, and we look forward to welcoming you back with a renewed energy and an improved atmosphere.” (link)
Major non-conference women’s college athletics showcases are growing into premier pro venues, capitalizing on surging television ratings, record venue crowds and new NIL revenue streams, per SBJ’s Rachel Axon. Event operators including Range Sports, Wild Horse Sports and ESPN Events are now expanding inventories across basketball, softball and gymnastics, with Players Era projecting mid-seven figures in NIL deals combined in its volleyball and women’s basketball events, with USC, Texas, Duke and South Carolina committed to the December basketball showcase. Players Era CEO Seth Berger: "What’s interesting is the number of quality teams in women’s sports has grown significantly in the last few years. So five years ago, a top-five versus top-20 women’s basketball game was not going to be close. Now these games are close. There are more really good players in women’s basketball and women’s volleyball. And so because of that, there’s more opportunity for event operators to create meaningful events." ESPN Events VP Clint Overby adds: “We have no shortage of teams looking for opportunities and we see no shortage of promoters out there looking to create opportunities.” (link)
North Carolina Baseball HC Scott Forbes has agreed to a six-year contract extension that will keep him in Chapel Hill through 2032. The Miami Marlins cut six of their 12 pro scouts as part of an industry-wide shift toward video and data analytics over in-person evaluation. The Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson notes MLB teams are increasingly utilizing TrackMan technology to evaluate players remotely through digital interfaces, and the Marlins join a growing list of franchises, including the Atlanta Braves, Washington Nationals, Houston Astros, and Minnesota Twins, that have reduced or eliminated traditional pro scouting departments in favor of a data-driven approach to big-league player evaluation. Colleges and universities remain deeply divided over the deployment of AI-detection software to combat automated academic dishonesty four years after the launch of ChatGPT, according to The Atlantic's Will Oremus, who notes Turnitin has sold its AI detection add-on to roughly 1,400 North American institutions—flagging AI writing in nearly half of all U.S. university submissions last academic year—while maintaining a claimed false-positive rate under 1% and a false-negative rate around 15%. Competitor Pangram reports an internal false-positive rate of 1 in 25K, yet major institutions like Vanderbilt, Indiana and Harvard have discouraged or banned automated detection due to concerns over false accusations, bias, and evasion tactics like "humanizer" tools. MIT teacher-education program director Eric Klopfer offers his solution: "We’re trying to think about how we approach the design of our education system in a way that should hopefully mitigate even the need for AI detectors. If it feels like what I’m doing is checking a box that says I’m going to get credit, then it’s understandable why students would want to take a shortcut." (link)
Genius Sports CEO Mark Locke expects prediction markets to remain a U.S. sports wagering fixture, while positioning the B2B data provider to monetize the expansion regardless of regulatory shifts, per Casino.org’s Todd Shriber. Genius recently secured event-contract settlement deals with Kalshi and Polymarket operators to provide official data, settlement, integrity services and real-time pricing feeds to exchange market makers, alongside user acquisition services via its media platforms. Texas Capital Analyst David Bain noted parallels between prediction markets’ current customer acquisition efforts and the post-2018 PASPA repeal customer acquisition "land grab" by online sportsbooks, highlighting that Genius had already secured agreements covering a substantial portion of active liquidity providers. Locke: “Demand can endure while access narrows, activity falls or customers move between products. The distinction is between confidence in the underlying appetite for sports wagering and confidence in any particular platform’s current business model. Genius does not need to make the second bet to benefit from the first. If prediction-market customers do not stick, the activity returns to the sportsbooks we already supply.” (link)
