NCAA President Charlie Baker pens an urgent call-to-action through USA Today asking for federal intervention via the Protect College Sports Act to halt the rapid legal erosion of traditional collegiate eligibility boundaries. Citing a surge of over 165 filed lawsuits since the start of 2025, Baker warns that court injunctions forcing the NCAA to reinstate former NFL and NBA professionals, alongside allowing multi-school transfers, are systematically crowding out incoming high school recruits and depleting scholarship opportunities for traditional student-athletes. “As rosters are increasingly packed with older adults and former professionals, the most obvious consequence is an unfair matchup on the field. But the longer-term impact falls on the next generation of young athletes who will be squeezed out of the system as a result. Sidelining incoming freshmen doesn’t just rob them of their roster spots or athletic scholarship opportunities — it also strips away their chance to experience the lifelong benefits of college sports. In addition, adding former professionals to rosters costs already-enrolled student-athletes valuable playing time and development opportunities during their precious years in college.” More. (link)
The student-athlete rev-share cap of $21.3M for 2026-27 has increased to $21.58M following an audit of power conference revenue, according to Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, who notes “there was an automatic 4% boost plus an additional, one-time increase,” allowing schools to spend an additional $131,438 during the 2026-27 season. Atlantic Hockey America Commissioner Michelle Morgan receives a four-year contract extension to continue leading the league through the 2029-30 campaign. (link)
Texas Chief of Staff/Executive Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Chris Plonsky plans to retire from her role at the conclusion of the 2026-27 academic year after 39 total years on the Forty Acres. (link)
The College Football Playoff enters its fourth consecutive season with structural changes, initiating a new six-year contract through 2031 that grants guaranteed automatic bids to the Power 4 conference champions, one bid to the highest-ranked Group of 6 team and an automatic spot to Notre Dame if listed in the top 12 of the final rankings. Negotiated in 2024 under implicit threats of a breakaway playoff, the new financial model drastically skews revenue distribution, per The Athletic’s Chris Vannini, who notes the SEC and Big Ten will each collect roughly 29% of the pool (over $21M per school), while the ACC will receive 17% ($13M), the Big 12 will take 15% ($12M), and the Group of 6 will collectively split 9% (around $1.8M per school, but more for Oregon State and Washington State). Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark reflected on the leverage wielded by the Big Ten and SEC during the initial revenue negotiations: "I’m a very different commissioner than I was (then), and I’m not sure I would have made the same decision." ESPN Senior Writer Heather Dinich sat down with The Golics this morning to share the latest on the CFP weighing in on pro-college eligibility. “The CFP Management Committee is having about a 90-minute Zoom meeting later today. They are absolutely expected to discuss a potential eligibility rule for the College Football Playoff. The Power 4 conference commissioners who will be on that call have all publicly come out against having former pro players join the college teams. Some have been more broad and said ‘you can’t do this in any sport.’ Some have been more narrow and said ‘just the NFL and NBA.’ Everyone has different nuances to it, but the bottom line is all these guys have already made rules in their respective leagues that say you can’t do this, so it seems natural that the next step is for the College Football Playoff to implement a similar rule and then in turn naturally be sued by any athletes who want to do this.” (link)
CBS’ Brandon Marcello reports UCLA AD Martin Jarmond’s dismissal came after three consecutive years of declining donor contributions and a cumulative $241.1M athletic department deficit since 2019. Despite a high-profile move from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten that boosted media rights revenue 88% to $77.3M, annual donor support plunged from $18.5M in FY22 to $13.5M in FY25 [ranking 14th out of 16 public Big Ten institutions] amid booster backlash over slow NIL adoption, poor administrative communication and a 42% two-year drop in corporate sponsorship revenue. The department's financial distress was further exacerbated by a $31.1M university campus subsidy required to offset operational losses and rising travel costs, alongside impending financial obligations that include the $20.5M annual rev-sharing cap, the second of three $10M payments owed to Cal, an eventual $5.9M Jarmond buyout and an ongoing $1B lease lawsuit filed by the Rose Bowl Operating Company. Tennessee has reportedly agreed to a new 10-year jersey patch deal with First Horizon Bank that’s valued at more than $120M, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel and Fox Sports’ Ben Portnoy. The agreement, which is separate from the Vols’ previously announced men’s & women’s basketball jersey patch deal with Axle Logistics, will feature the financial institution’s logo on UT’s football, soccer, golf, tennis, rowing, volleyball, track & field, cross country and swimming & diving uniforms. Portnoy adds: “[It’s] worth noting the agreement also includes a naming rights component for club spaces at Neyland Stadium and Lindsey Nelson Stadium (Baseball). Have seen a few other schools integrate naming rights into these kinds of corporate deals (Ohio State, Duke, etc.).” (link, link)
In advance of the 2026-27 athletic campaign, Georgia Tech AD Ryan Alpert provides more details to season-ticket holders of what will serve as the first Bobby Dodd Stadium reseating since 2003. The $70M renovation of the facility, which is expected to be completed prior to the 2027 season, will “include the addition of 12,500 chairback seats, the widening of aisles, the installation of handrails and a full overhaul of premium areas, which will affect the stadium’s seating manifest.” Alpert adds: “All season ticket members (with the very limited exceptions of those located in the Renasant Deck, Genesis Goal Line Club or ADA seating areas) will be a part of the reseating process. While the original design for the upcoming stadium renovation included reducing stadium capacity to around 42K seats, the new design will keep capacity at right around 50K seats. Therefore, most season ticket members will have the ability to remain in or near their current seats in this reseating process. In addition, 2027 season ticket prices and TECH Fund commitments for all bowl seating areas (non-premium) will not increase from 2026.” More. (link)
Georgia Tech also taps Veritiv as football’s first-ever jersey patch sponsor as well as the Official Sustainability Partner of Georgia Tech Athletics. The multi-year strategic partnership offers the specialty packaging, facility and print solutions company the opportunity to collaborate with Tech student-athletes in NIL activities, while working with the school to achieve three main sustainability goals – reducing waste and advancing circularity; making procurement more sustainable; and using data and innovation to improve resource efficiency. UTEP agrees to a deal to have The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) serve as a jersey patch partner for the Miner football program this fall. The Van Wagner-brokered agreement will see the labor union's logo join the GECU mark on all UTEP football uniforms, making the school the first in the Mountain West to feature two jersey patches for the sport. Elon inks a jersey patch partnership with Onrise to put the athlete-focused mental health provider’s logo on the Phoenix’s men’s and women’s soccer uniforms throughout the 2026 season. The deal was developed in collaboration with Learfield’s Elon Sports Properties. (link)
Dealing with the downstream financial effects of college sports’ new revenue sharing era was the major topic at a recent Louisiana Board of Regents NIL symposium held at Grambling State. Per the Louisiana Illuminator’s Piper Hutchinson, mid-major programs facing a tight donor pool in a state ranking next-to-last in median household income, with player budgets ranging from low-six to low-seven figures, are reallocating general fundraising gifts away from facility upgrades to keep rosters intact. Beyond financial strain, athletic leaders from LSU and Louisiana Tech highlighted issues such as unmanageable student-athlete expectations and unfulfilled contract obligations, while praising Louisiana's pioneering state law requiring background checks and mandatory registration for all NIL agents. LSU Senior Deputy AD Heath Schroyer emphasized the non-negotiable value of maintaining competitive sports programs despite the financial pressures: “No one has endless money, whether you’re at LSU or at McNeese, we’re all fighting the boogeyman, if you will. Everyone’s got more, right? ... I don’t know if you can put a monetary value on what successful athletics can do to market your university. If you take athletics away from all of the institutions in this state, all those schools, they can’t survive.” (link)
Delaware unveils a refreshed version of its Fightin' Blue Hen D mark, featuring bolder outlines and strokes along with the school’s current blue and gold colors. The UnvaulteD design will be featured during designated throwback games across multiple varsity programs throughout the 2026-27 athletics year, with participating teams incorporating the logo into exclusive coaches' sideline apparel. Football plans to spotlight the mark during its homecoming matchup against FIU on November 14. (link)

The Ohio State University Senior Vice President and Wolfe Foundation-Eugene Smith Endowed Athletics Director, Ross Bjork, joins Excel Search and Advisory President, Chad Biagini, on the Excellent Leadership Podcast for a high-energy look inside one of college sports’ biggest jobs. The $325M, 36-sport enterprise with 966 student-athletes and 600+ staff is a global brand under constant scrutiny. Bjork is candid on succeeding Gene Smith, protecting an iconic culture and modernizing fast enough to compete, urging leaders to “leave it better than you found it” and “honor tradition, but don’t think traditionally.” He leans into football as the “economic engine,” why “every word matters,” and why “if you maintain, you fall behind.” For rising ADs, Bjork offers a cutting-edge playbook on transition discipline, org design, revenue creativity, talent judgment, truth-telling and aligning priorities with purpose.

UCLA parts ways with AD Martin Jarmond after six years, per the California Post’s Ben Bolch. Chancellor Julio Frenk in a message to campus: “UCLA must have an athletics model that leads — not just keeps pace. … UCLA Athletics currently carries a significant financial deficit, and its current path is not sustainable. Now is the moment to build a model for Athletics that protects the breadth of our program, creates new opportunities for student-athletes and coaches, and supports itself through the revenue it generates. I believe UCLA should help lead the transformation of intercollegiate athletics: our future must be shaped by purpose — not by pressure.” Jarmond will be owed the roughly $5.9M left on his contract. Former Los Angeles Lakers President of Business Operations Tim Harris will serve as Interim AD pro bono. (link)
Miami (FL) President Joe Echevarria is expected to meet with AD candidates for in-person interviews as soon as this week, according to CollegeAD, which reports: “Sources say these meetings follow a series of interviews in which candidates met with other Miami executives who did not include Echevarria. … The belief among sources is that Miami continues to target ‘non-traditional’ candidates.” (link)
OVC Commissioner Matt Wilson joined the One-on-One with Greg Pogue podcast to go over his immediate priorities, which include a directive to stabilize membership between 10 and 12 schools to ensure viable non-conference scheduling. Here are the main points…
➤ Restoring regional travel to combat soaring athletic department costs: "When you're spending so much revenue on, it sounds crass, but it's reality, player payroll, coaches' salaries, things like that, why would you spend $100K chartering your football team for a game in Texas … when you could put them on a bus, go play somebody two and a half hours away and know your fans are coming to watch it."
➤ Navigating realignment among mid-majors: "There's only 32 Division I commissioners. It's a really exclusive club, and you're damaging your colleagues in some way anytime there's membership change. But you have to do it. That's the reality of it."
➤ Benefits of expanding to 10 or 12 full members: "I hope we've got 10 to 12 full members so that our teams have very robust schedules because … there's 32 opportunities to play basketball in Division I now. We're only providing 16 conference games this year and it's a lot of games to go find." (link)
Freshly minted San Francisco AD Brent Blaylock outlined his initial priorities during his introductory press conference on the Hilltop, including the launch of the Director of Athletics Leadership Fund to generate agile, unrestricted revenue, confirmed the athletic department will hire a Chief Revenue Officer and an Assoc. AD for Communications and more. D1.takeaways…
➤ "College athletics is experiencing extraordinary change right now. The world around us is evolving rapidly and no one has the luxury of standing still. ... Our responsibility is to be ready to meet the moment. I'm guided by a quote from General Eric Shinseki. It says, 'If you do not like change, you're going to like irrelevance even less.'"
➤ "The idea with these unrestricted funds is to be able to allow us to adapt and evolve quickly to areas that we think need an investment, and that's over a variety of things whether that's investing in a student-athlete need and a retention need, a facility need. ... Sometimes we just need to have current use dollars that we're able to deploy however needed."
➤ Defining his top three immediate priorities for the upcoming academic year: "One, let's all get in the boat together and start rowing together in whichever direction that we so choose. ... I think the next part is going through and working with either our coaches, our student-athletes, or our staff departments, and really finding out what do you need to be successful. ... And then the third part is just a larger assessment of where we are." (link)
USF initiated a comprehensive rebranding to eliminate the USF acronym across all digital platforms, uniforms, and broadcasting graphics and be referred to as South Florida, instead. Bulls’ AD Rob Higgins led the rebrand to establish national clarity and avoid frequent media confusion with UCF, the University of San Francisco, and the University of Sioux Falls. South Florida retains its traditional Bulls horns logo but now instructs television network announcers to exclusively use the full geographic name during live game broadcasts. Higgins: "I think when you look at really strong brands, it starts with consistency. And I think at times we've moved around in terms of what we've leaned into as an athletic program. And depending on the sport and across our 21 sports, we haven't had the consistency necessary to have a really strong brand identity. … You'll see that through social as well, and making sure we're building as much equity as we possibly can, especially when you think about all the momentum we have, as well as this overall athletic district really coming together in a profound way.” (link)
Appalachian State AD Doug Gillin was on the Mind Your Business podcast with Boone Area Chamber of Commerce President/CEO David Jackson…
➤ Does the facilities arms race matter as much during the NIL and revenue-sharing era? "It still matters. I do think the percentage is probably lower. Now, the good news is we've kind of set ourselves up. You won't see a lot of new facilities at Appalachian. I think we're in a really good spot. Now we’ve got to focus on revenue generation opportunities, whether it's rev share, whether it's nutrition, other things, because everything matters.”
➤ On approaching $1M in annual licensing revenue: "It's a significant revenue stream for us approaching seven figures and that has been a build every year. … Licensing can continue to grow here. We've got a great brand, great color scheme, good marks. Those all matter. We just need to continue to market it."
➤ On navigating rising expenses amidst department budget growth: "Twelve years ago, our budget's $23M. We've grown that significantly, but the expenses have grown significantly as well. Scholarships, now five-for-five, that means not only are you gonna have undergrads, but then you're gonna have grad school, and right now grad school costs more than undergrads. When you start looking at the math, it's more expensive for that fifth year. So, there's a lot of things that you don't think about until you look at the economics of it. That's the most challenging part.” (link)
Sports marketing executives expect the SEC and Big Ten to eventually command nine-figure annual valuations for conference-wide jersey patch sponsorships, according to Sport & State's Mark J. Burns. Here’s what you need to know…
➤ Professional Sports Partners CEO Jason Kohll projected the two leagues could seek $100M per year, significantly outpacing the Big 12's recent $20M annual deal with Monster Energy and putting the conferences on par with the Premier League.
➤ Oak View Group President of Global Partnerships Dan Griffis warns, however, that the high-dollar deals limit the number of potential partners: “I don’t think it’s out of the ordinary to ask for that much money or to think that it could be worth that. It just shrinks the pool of companies that could actually do it.”
➤ While a leaguewide deal for either conference has yet to materialize, SEC Deputy Commissioner/COO Charlie Hussey confirms Creative Artists Agency Sports recently presented uniform patch valuations to the conference's athletic director working group, though he says the league remains unready to finalize a deal.
➤ Navigate VP of Consulting Charles Rolston on the timeline for the SEC and Big Ten: "They’re really going to have to get some type of Godfather offer. ... Maybe our math might say that it’s worth, let’s say, 3x more than what the Big 12 sold their deal for if it was the exact same package. ... We might see a 4x number or 5x number because they’re able to drive that scarcity with the brand. The flip side is, how many brands can really afford a $60M or $80M check every single year for a sponsorship?" (link)
Utah State will rename its football stadium as Jim Laub Family Stadium on January 1, 2027. Aggies AD Cameron Walker: "Jim and Carol have been instrumental in supporting Utah State throughout the years and have a clear vision for where Aggie Athletics can go, while helping our university make an impact on the national stage. Their unwavering loyalty, leadership and investment have been critical to the success and growth of the athletics department. This is a fitting tribute to all they have done, continue to do and will do for the future of Aggie Athletics." (link); Here’s a video showing off the new signage. (link)
San Diego State has agreed to a football jersey patch sponsorship with Palomar Insurance. Financial details of the three-year agreement were not revealed, per the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Kirk Kenney. (link)
The family of hospitalized Arizona State men’s hockey student-athlete Matthew Mayich has hired former Arizona Deputy Chief Attorney General Rob Carey to evaluate the athletic department's internal review of an August workout. According to The Athletic’s Katie Strang, Nathan Fenno and Adam Kilgore, Carey demanded administrators place the men's hockey coaching staff on administrative leave after Mayich collapsed during a 45-minute military-style session led by former Green Beret Tim Ziesel. ASU has confirmed that SVP James Rund is conducting an internal review of the circumstances, and Sun Devils AD Graham Rossini last week emphasized that it was “a really, really important distinction” to note the school was not investigating what happened but rather conducting a review. ESPN has launched a digital scavenger hunt to expand fan engagement ahead of the 500th episode of College GameDay, set to air from Baton Rouge before a matchup between LSU and Clemson this Saturday. Fans can access a dedicated microsite to complete daily trivia challenges and locate campus landmarks like the Mike the Tiger habitat. ESPN, which partnered with Assembli and Flowcode to build the mobile platform, will randomly select 15 weekly winners to receive premium front-row access for the Saturday morning broadcast. ESPN Director of Sports Marketing Maggie Lewin designed the project to draw casual local audiences into the broader television ecosystem and says: "We’ve been doing this for now 40 seasons, but it’s also this crown jewel within the larger ESPN ecosystem and a way for people to come in and be like, ‘I don’t maybe watch ESPN or know a lot about ESPN, but I do know that ESPN College GameDay came to my campus and that was really cool.’ ... So, it’s kind of this vehicle into the rest of the four letters." (link)
