“If it does go away – and there's no reason to believe it will or won't, more to come on that – we'll look to replace it with something. We'll need another tent-pole event to take its place, and I'm working on that now.”
Brett Yormark
Big 12 Commissioner on next steps should the football conference title game go away in a 24-team CFP

Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark met with the media over the past two days at the official introduction of new Iowa State AD Jared Benko in Ames and from Monster Energy Big 12 Basketball Media Days in Kansas City. Here are some key takeaways…
➤ On the possibility the Big 12 Football Championship could be eliminated: “[It’s] one of our marquee tent-pole events. … If it does go away – and there's no reason to believe it will or won't, more to come on that – we'll look to replace it with something. We'll need another tent-pole event to take its place, and I'm working on that now.”
➤ Does he foresee conference championship basketball tournaments potentially going away with NCAA Tournament expansion? “Tentpole events for us matter. Our [football] champ game has been very valuable. Our basketball tournament, both men's and women's, has been very valuable. If there's a point in time where change is made, we will look to backstop those events with other events. We're in the event business. It drives a lot of fan engagement and excitement. We'll see what happens in the future. Those are big moments for us. For some reason if one goes away, we'll replace it with something different.”
➤ How difficult is it for Big 12 football programs to schedule showcase opportunities such as the one that resulted in last Saturday’s BYU home win over Notre Dame? “Our schools are committed to playing the biggest and best. I do believe that if we were to get something done with the CFP, expand to 24, you'll see scheduling, the scheduling dynamic, move in a different direction. I think that will be a positive when you think about scheduling and the best matchups week-in, week-out, specifically out of conference. We're committed to it. We want those big moments. We want to compete against the best.”
➤ On how the Big 12 will help non-revenue generating and Olympic sports: "Olympic sports are critically important for us, and when I think about our growth going forward, obviously, we can continue to grow football and men's and women's basketball, but a lot of focus from a conference perspective are on those core Olympic sports that matter. You're seeing fan engagement. You're seeing ratings. You think about volleyball, women's soccer, softball and wrestling, gymnastics, baseball. All those are value-creators on a go-forward basis and we're putting a lot of emphasis behind them." (link, link)
Could College Football Playoff expansion to 24 teams incentivize top blue-blood brands to go independent like Notre Dame? Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde believes it’s an intriguing thought, if not a new one. Key takeaways…
➤ “Several years ago, one of the nation’s top [ADs] told me he believed Texas, Michigan, Ohio State and USC could all successfully go independent, perhaps others. … Dumbing down the playoff for the sake of mid-tier power-conference teams could hasten a breaking from traditional ties for the biggest brands. If winning a nonsensically large league has almost no inherent value, why do it when more lucrative, autonomous alternatives exist?”
➤ Significant roadblocks remain regarding housing non-revenue sports and how to schedule games. “While it’s easy to wave a hand and say none of those sports matter, they actually do (especially basketball and all those with federally protected equal access and opportunity via Title IX). … As for scheduling football games: Who is willing to play the independents, and what’s in it for them? The blueblood independents could all play each other and fill out maybe one-third of a schedule, then they might have to buy the other two-thirds at a highway robbery rate.”
➤ Also, per Forde, a more immediate short-term move for top-tier brands in major leagues may be demanding uneven revenue distribution based on postseason advancement and viewership metrics before an inevitable 20- to 40-school super league materializes. (link)
Montana State holds down the No. 1 spot in the first in-season reveal of the Football Championship Committee’s top 10 FCS football rankings. Tarleton State ranks second, while Youngstown State, Stephen F. Austin and South Dakota State round out the top five. Positions 6-10 consist of North Dakota, Northern Arizona, South Dakota, Austin Peay and Harvard, respectively. (link)
With potential College Football Playoff expansion to 24 teams, Army and Navy officials are working with an ideal goal of preserving the exclusive window for the annual Army-Navy Game, per Reuters. Under the proposed CFP model, the 16-team first round would likely begin during the second week of December, the exclusive broadcasting window currently held by the two service academies, to ensure the tournament concludes by mid-January. With conference championship games expected to be eliminated to accommodate the new format, moving the game to the first week of December or Thanksgiving week are potential alternatives. Army AD Tom Theodorakis emphasized the priority of preserving the matchup's standalone platform while ensuring postseason access: "I view these conversations as a win for the academies and 'America's Game.' ... If we can preserve Army-Navy while giving our cadet athletes the opportunity to be in the College Football Playoff, that's the best of both worlds." (link)
Through seven weeks and every FBS team playing at least two home games, Fresno State leads non-Power 4 schools in average attendance at 40,762, up 7.18% from last year’s average. East Carolina, Colorado State, Memphis and South Florida round out the top five. Full database. (link)
Super notable sports finance development from Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams: “The NFL is partnering with General Atlantic on a new investment fund. This will turbo-charge 32 Equity, the league's investment arm, and create a GP structure where the league shares in carry-on investments.” (link)
Vermont is proceeding with plans for its long-delayed multipurpose center, including a new basketball arena, after UVM trustees recently authorized up to $10M in spending on pre-construction activities for the project. Per WCAX 3’s Ike Bendavid, work on the Tarrant Center originally commenced back in 2019, but was derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, a hole in the middle of the UVM athletic campus has marked where the facility will be built between Gutterson Fieldhouse and Patrick Gym. The new arena will serve as home to the men’s and women’s basketball teams, while expected to also host non-athletic events such as concerts. The overall project also includes renovations to Gutterson Fieldhouse and some of the money has already been spent on new campus recreation and wellness facilities. According to the school, rising costs have been the biggest hurdle to get the originally projected $100M center back on track. Next steps for the project include determining the final cost as well as how much additional fundraising will be needed. (link)

(WLBT), will air various events from their local SWAC schools, including football, basketball, soccer and additional men’s and women’s sports. (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger clarifies his reporting on the College Football Playoff’s extension with ESPN: “The ~$125M conferences gained from ESPN for CFP expansion is not additive as it replaces lost ticket/sponsorship revenue from conference champ games. All champ game media value was ~$225M + $125M of ticket/sponsorship = $350M.” (link)
Iowa State held an introductory press conference for freshly minted AD Jared Benko, who described his plans to adopt a professional front-office model to accelerate commercialization efforts, discover alternative revenue streams beyond traditional ticketing and philanthropy, how athletics works within the university ecosystem and more. Here’s what he had to say…
➤ "To compete at the highest level, we have the resources and we need to continue to create additional resources to be disciplined about how we invest them. ... We can't count on one or two revenue streams and expect them to keep up. We have to continue to grow all of them. Philanthropy, ticketing, premium partnerships, events, and even find new ones."
➤ Utilizing consumer data to construct enhanced fan profiles: "Historically, you know, a fan purchases a ticket and maybe you have a little bit of information. But what we've done in the past is start connecting, what are their concession purchases, what are their retail purchases, and you start building profiles of ways we can continue to enhance their experience."
➤ Balancing future infrastructure investments against revenue-sharing demands: "I think right now for a long time, you could, you know, you go back five, 10 years ago, you really could make facilities a priority. And we're gonna continue to make them a priority, but you've got to balance a little more than you did 5, 10 years ago." (link, link)
Utah AD Mark Harlan addressed his department’s media exposure, television scheduling, and operational initiatives during a media availability ahead of the No. 10 Utes' game against No. 14 Houston this weekend. Notable takeaways…
➤ On hosting ESPN College GameDay: "I think it’s remarkable. There’s not a lot of schools out there that have been able to host three of the last four years. There’s some in the Big Ten and SEC [that] would dream of that, but we’ve got it here at Utah."
➤ Early progress with Crimson Brand Partners (CBP): "I’m thrilled by the start. This is a journey, multiple-year journey. I think [CBP CEO] Matt Webb and his team have done a great job collaborating with all of us to really, what we said all along, is to create the best possible experience. We’re trying stuff at football. We’ll start seeing that in basketball. ... You’ll see the debut of the new north end zone field suites this weekend. ... They’re up to 70 people [employed]. We used to have 16 people on it."
➤ Venue renovation strategy leading into the 2034 Winter Olympics: "That’s a joint university and CBP investment, so it’s not $40M just from them. ... It’s a constant collaborative conversation, but it’s also starting to have conversations with the Olympic organizers too, right? ... as we look at our facilities going forward, we’re having multiple conversations to see if we can hit the mark." (link)
Austin Peay AD Jordan Harmon was asked about a potential move to FBS on the GovTalk podcast: “If the phone rings, you owe it to yourself to answer it, but you've got to be really good with where your feet are to even give yourself an opportunity to have any growth. … We really don't see a lot of desire and need to make that transition. I think we again have the ability to be really successful in the FCS, really successful in the mid-major ranks." (link)
Clemson shares a first look inside Brown Family Pavilion, the Tigers’ new $40M men’s basketball practice facility. Clemson Wire’s Drew Landon notes the facility “includes about 30,000 square feet of new construction and renovations to more than 51,000 square feet of existing space around Littlejohn Coliseum and Swann Pavilion. The Brown Family Pavilion houses the men's practice gym, team areas, and coaches' offices, while the women's program is receiving upgrades to its practice gym, offices, and recruiting spaces. Clemson also expanded the strength and conditioning, nutrition, and sports medicine areas shared by both programs.” (link)

UCLA reported an actual attendance of 36,045 for a 17-7 football victory over Wisconsin, highlighting a disconnect between the program's undefeated 6-0 record in the Big Ten and lagging fan engagement, The California Post’s Ben Bolch observes, noting the Rose Bowl turnout fell well below the program's 2014 average of 76,650, even with a top-10 national ranking, a promotional giveaway of 1,000 conductor hats, and secondary market tickets priced around the cost of a McDonald's Happy Meal. Football HC Bob Chesney addressed the fan base ahead of the final four home games: "I think for them, this should be the one to give them the confidence to understand just exactly who we are and where this thing is going. … I hope that we’re making people proud and I hope that they release the fear they might have of anything else and just support the hell out of it and enjoy this journey." (link)
LSU Football HC Lane Kiffin has soured on the tradition of field-storming, citing safety concerns as fans increasingly seek to record altercations with opposing personnel for social media. After LSU's 35-34 overtime loss to Kentucky, Kiffin complained that fans followed him off the field making obscene gestures while filming the encounter. The SEC currently enforces a $500K fine for rushing the field, but Kiffin questioned the efficacy of the penalty if universities view it as the acceptable cost of celebrating a major upset. Kiffin: "What we used to have was just fans having fun with each other and excited and going to try to find their team. And now that's not really the case, a lot of them, because everybody's got their phones and they all want their moment. So let us go see if we can get a coach or a player to say something back and run right into them and hold the phone in their face and all that. I think the reasoning for it has changed and what happens. So it's not really a safe event because of that." (link)
Louisville will raise a banner honoring its late longtime SID Kenny Klein during the Cardinals' Jan. 2 men's basketball game against Stanford at the KFC Yum! Center. Klein, a Sports Information Hall of Famer who spent over four decades with the Cardinals before his passing in June, coordinated statistics for 40 NCAA Final Fours and produced decades of university media guides. Cards AD Josh Heird: "Kenny Klein dedicated his career to telling the stories of Louisville’s greatest moments and the people who made them possible. He never sought the spotlight or recognition for himself, but there is no question that Kenny profoundly shaped the history and tradition of Louisville Basketball as we know it." (link)
St. John's is also honoring Klein throughout the 2026-27 season by keeping the seat next to Men's Basketball HC Rick Pitino empty and wearing a black "K.K." band on the team's jerseys. The New York Post’s Zach Braziller notes the Red Storm has also launched a new 10-member Ring of Honor, and Johnnies AD Ed Kull says the athletic department is now in discussions to officially retire player jersey numbers for the first time in program history. Pitino on Klein: "His wife is going to be with us both home and away, which is big for us. On a personal level, it’s been a really horrendous summer. Not since 9/11 have I felt so sad, losing a person right in front of you who I love so much. We’ll keep honoring him. I keep thinking of him. My heart breaks for his wife. I miss him terribly."
