The 2026 State of AI in Sports Report from Teamworks and Front Office Sports reveals a gap: 90% of sports organizations expect their AI usage to grow, yet only 15% can prove measurable ROI today. Based on responses from leading professional teams, leagues, and collegiate athletic departments, the report shows what separates top performers from the rest. Deploying AI department by department yields virtually no return. Organizations with dedicated AI budgets, accountable leadership, and connected athlete records see ROI rates of up to 67%. The Big Ten’s new conference-level rule capping school-affiliated third-party NIL deals at roughly $27M, while implementing a financial penalty structure for those exceeding that plateau, could potentially open the door for further legal fights. Writing for On3, Ross Dellenger notes if federal legislation isn’t passed and the league imposes penalties on schools for exceeding this quasi-new cap, House plaintiffs attorneys Jeffrey Kessler and Steve Berman plan to file another complaint with the court, providing another test of the much-discussed conference-only governance model, where leagues are mobilizing to create and enforce their own regulations as a way to, in theory, avoid litigation that crippled the NCAA’s national rules. More details…
➤ Kessler: “They are in a binding settlement agreement. They signed it and it has been approved by the court. That agreement says there can be no limitation on third-party agreements. This (Big Ten) limitation is not in the agreement.”
➤ The other three Power 4 leagues have discussed similar conference-only cap rules that align with the bill. However, if they don’t adopt those policies and the PCSA doesn’t pass, the Big Ten could then be at a disadvantage, as schools in other leagues could distribute more than $49M in third-party cash.
➤ Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti: “We’ve talked a lot internally of what the right numbers are. The league is comfortable with maintaining national competitiveness. It is not an issue.” (link)
Hours before the SEC and Big Ten publicly endorsed the Protect College Sports Act, Republican Senate Commerce Committee Staff Director Brad Grantz sent a memo warning SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey that failing to support the measure could open up the risk of a Democratic version with collective bargaining and employee status for student-athletes, per Front Office Sports’ Jon Loesche. Key takeaways from the memo…
➤ “There is no legislative alternative that gets better for the SEC. After the election, because of who is likely to win the House, you won’t see this bill…being considered. The asks from the Democrats begin with employee status, collective bargaining rights, and end with private right of action. Let’s get this done.”
➤ Forwarded by lobbying firm Klein/Johnson Group on July 31 via Sen. Eric Schmitt's (R-MO) office, the e-mail asked that the memo be shared “directly with the SEC presidents and board members.” Sankey forwarded it to university leaders soon after, calling it “one additional email provided by the Commerce Committee.”
➤ Less than two hours later, the SEC and Big Ten publicly released a joint statement endorsing the bill. Much of Grantz’s memo was devoted to explaining how far lawmakers had already gone to accommodate the SEC, writing bluntly: “The Committee has moved substantially in the SEC’s direction.” SEC Associate Commissioner Herb Vincent responded to FOS’s request for comment by stating the league’s support followed “several weeks of discussions and negotiations with legislators and staffs,” with Grantz’s email “only one unsolicited point of input” among many the league received from government relations pros. The NCAA is officially participating in the Bad Actor Program initiative to target online harassment and betting-related abuse directed at student-athletes, coaches and officials. Developed by Integrity Compliance 360 and Signify Group alongside Fanatics Sportsbook, the program tracks online offenders to support enforcement measures such as bans from participating sportsbooks. The partnership follows an initial study that flagged over 5K verified abusive posts during championship events, with sports betting directly linked to 12% of all verified abuse, increasing to 19% in men’s basketball. The NCAA’s 2025 GOALS study separately found that 51% of DI men’s basketball student-athletes received social media abuse tied to performance, while 46% received negative or threatening messages from bettors. Florida State Interim AD Bruce Warwick visited with Front Row Noles to discuss his expanded leadership role following the departure of former AD Michael Alford and more. Here are some takeaways…
➤ Discussing day-to-day changes since he’s taken on the Interim AD role: “I obviously have to budget my time very, very wisely. Just the amount of information taken on the whole athletic department, just the different coaches, teams, support departments. I have a pretty good working knowledge of most of the athletic department just because of my role in football, but getting to know the coaches in the other sports and meeting some of the other student-athletes has been very rewarding and refreshing, a good change of pace, and I enjoy each and every day of it.”
➤ Comparing FSU's new 150K-square-foot, football-only Dunlap Football Center to NFL standards: "Our facility is much nicer than the [Los Angeles] Rams, but they also built a $5B stadium. So, they put their money in the stadium first and the practice facility will follow. The facility we have here is second to none. … All the spaces that we have in that building versus what's in the Moore [Athletic] Center are in the player areas in the locker room, the sports med, sports science, nutrition, weight room, the walkthrough space that we have adjacent to the meeting spaces. It’s all about the development of the player." (link)
Georgia extends its partnership with Learfield for 15 years through 2042 in an effort to continue maximizing athletics revenue by expanding the ability to collaborate on new sponsorship, media and fan engagement opportunities. Through the deal, UGA taps into additional solutions to enhance fan experience and grow revenue, including SIDEARM Sports for digital fan engagement; Paciolan for ticketing, marketing and fundraising; and Learfield Amplify for ticket sales, development and seating. Overall, 40-of-61 Group of Six football HCs who offered an opinion to a survey of non-power programs favor creating an independent postseason playoff, as long as the cohort retains its automatic bid to the expanded 24-team College Football Playoff, per On3’s Brett McMurphy. More…
➤ While the G6 is currently guaranteed an automatic bid to a 24-team CFP, there are concerns its leagues could lose access and their 9% share of the $1.645B in annual CFP media rights, about $148M [an average of about $2M per school]. A G6 AD who prefers a separate playoff: “It’s all about access. We’re fighting for one spot out of 24 and it’s put us on our heels. In a Group of Six playoff, we would have five access points (for the other conference champions). We could hold it on campus or use the bowl structure. Whatever works best financially.” An industry source adds: “There is a real fear if the Group of Six started a playoff, they would get pushed out of the CFP.”
➤ An AD who opposes a separate G6 playoff questioned the reasoning behind one: “The fact we’re trying to decide who is the second- or third-best Group of Six team and not the best (G6) team, I don’t know what the motivating factor is. What’s the point? This is different than the College Football Playoff or at the FCS level, playing for a national title. This is playing for second or third place. That’s not fun. … It’s like the NIT. That doesn’t excite me. I’m all for creativity, but this seems desperate.”
➤ As to how much broadcast rights might potentially be worth, McMurphy posits that to receive maximum value, the games would have to be squeezed in around the CFP and NFL schedules. An industry source: “I don’t think it would be a huge windfall, but a four- or eight-team playoff would gross a little more than a conference championship game. They could build on it. It would be a giant perception builder and similar to a football version of the NIT. I think it would be a great move.” A different industry source disagreed: “No one other than ESPN was serious about bidding (for the 24-team College Football Playoff), so what networks would get involved for this? ESPN already owns the majority of those (G6) bowl matchups. Why would they pay more if those matchups were simply rebranded as playoff games?” (link)
Old Dominion University turns NIL income into tax confidence with Scout
NIL and revenue-share deals gave Old Dominion student-athletes real taxable income, many for the first time. A single 1099 can turn into a 10 to 15 page tax return, and most 19-year-olds have never seen either. Without the right infrastructure, that meant real risk: filing errors, financial stress, and compliance exposure for athletes and the school alike.
The good news? It's manageable with the right support in place. ODU wanted an athlete-first answer, not just a compliance fix. Scout centralized NIL financial processes and paired its digital platform with one-on-one guidance.
The outcome: filings completed with expert support, a more organized compliance process, and stronger athlete trust. Thad Madden, Scout's Head of Tax and a 38-year IRS veteran, to help athletes navigate their 2025 tax filings.
"NIL has created real income for our student-athletes, and with that comes real responsibility. Covering their tax filings is about education, protection, and long-term development." — Dr. Ronald Moses, Former Deputy Athletic Director, Old Dominion University
For athletic directors, tax season tests how well a program protects its athletes. Read here to see how ODU did it. Book a call to schedule a 15-minute call with our team.
Our sincerest condolences go out to the colleagues, friends and family of former Hawai’i/SMU/Atlanta Falcons (NFL) Football HC June Jones, following his passing at the age of 73. (link)

Texas Tech agreed to pay Skydance Sports $999,999 to film The Program, a four-part all-access docuseries that premiered on Paramount+ back in September, per Sportico’s Daniel Libit. The February term sheet set the “studio fee” to be paid across three installments, with the final payment due at the start of postproduction and no mention of revenue flowing back to the school. By limiting the price tag to under $1M, it kept the agreement below the state's statutory threshold for major contracts, which could have subjected it to additional scrutiny and oversight—including Board of Regents approval—and potential production delays. Despite Texas Tech footing the bill, the agreement also granted Skydance Sports sole ownership of “all elements in connection with and including the project,” excluding the university’s trademarks. TTU retained limited review and approval rights over rough and final cuts and can request use of produced social media or short-form content six months after the final episode airs. (link)
There’s a surprising new entry in the category of animals affecting sporting events as UNC Asheville’s women’s soccer match against Winthrop was briefly delayed with 14:20 remaining in the first half last night due to the proximity of several black bears to the field. Thankfully for all involved, they never entered the field of play, with UNCA going on to register a 2-1 win. (link)

House plaintiffs’ attorney Steve Berman weighs in on the Big Ten’s decision to implement rules aligning with the framework of the Protect College Sports Act: "To the extent the rule is implemented immediately it would directly violate the settlement. Our team is reviewing the rule and intends to fight any proposed limit to what the NCAA and conferences agreed to under the House settlement. Any cap that would keep schools from facilitating deals is a step in the wrong direction, and that the Big Ten tried to give this rule the moniker of 'protecting' college sports is a tired spin on its old hat arguments." (link)
While Clemson AD Graham Neff and North Carolina AD Steve Newmark support the broader principles of the Protect College Sports Act, they continue talking to Congress about modifying Section 205, which mandates that schools switching conferences must spend three years as an independent. While a congressional committee aide defended the requirement as a necessary safeguard to prevent private equity firms from circumventing membership caps and establishing a super league, the universities argue the restriction limits their ability to adapt in a rapidly evolving economic environment. Neff: "We don't believe Section 205 is critical to achieving the important protections that the rest of the bill provides. We think institutions should be able to decide how to strategically position their departments for long-term success." Newmark tells ESPN’s David Hale: "We appreciate the bill attempting to tackle many of the key issues impacting college sports today. We wholeheartedly agree on the need to implement a uniform and national standard to bring a measure of stability and clarity to collegiate athletics. What we've not received clarity on is the purpose of the independence clause, particularly with the existing language, which caps conference membership." (link)
James Moore & Co. Partner Katie Davis notes that a “new federal court ruling has implications for coach buyouts.” Here’s what you need to know…
➤ “The issue: Paying someone’s debt can create income even if they never receive the cash. For schools covering an incoming coach’s buyout, the tax treatment could change the cost of the hire. This month, in Levandowski (Kravitz v. U.S.) No. 4:25-cv-02713 (N.D. Cal. 2026) involved Uber paying a former Google employee’s debt.”
➤ “The court rejected the argument that he had no income because he never controlled the money. It also rejected the argument that the indemnification arrangement operated like nontaxable insurance. Those findings give additional support to challenging similar arguments used to exclude coach buyout payments from income.”
➤ “That’s an analogy, not a ruling specifically deciding coach buyout taxation. The ruling also does not mean every coach buyout is discharge-of-indebtedness income; compensation characterization still requires its own analysis.”
➤ “It is an interesting twist that would be a big change for most schools that treat the buyout of the coach’s old contract as an ‘ordinary business expense’ and don’t include it in the coach’s income as a benefit. I am not suggesting making a change yet, but consider reviewing the documentation supporting your current tax position on coach buyouts in light of the similar circumstances addressed in this case.” (link)
The Big 12 has fined UCF $100K for chants targeted at the BYU football program on Saturday. The Athletic’s David Ubben reports the league “also amended its sportsmanship rules and will assess on-field penalties for continued violations.” A statement from the league reads, in part: “While the Conference recognizes the pregame protocols followed by UCF and immediate actions taken during the game, including removal of some individuals responsible for the conduct, discriminatory behavior has no place in the Big 12.” (link)
Meanwhile, Cincinnati AD John Cunningham explains in a statement that the “Big 12 has notified us that we will not be fined following Saturday's field rush, as our safety protocols were successfully implemented and allowed the visiting team and game officials to safely exit the field following our victory over Texas Tech. … As we prepare to welcome another Top 10 opponent to Nippert Stadium this Saturday, let's keep bringing the incredible energy and passion that make this place so special, while always respecting our opponents and prioritizing the safety of everyone involved.” (link)
The NABC Tournament Advisory Committee plans to expand its evaluations during the upcoming 2026-27 campaign, while continuing to provide feedback for the second straight year to the DI Men’s Basketball Committee. This year’s group will not only evaluate and compile top-16 rankings of teams potentially warranting consideration for the NCAA Tournament bracket’s top-four seed lines, but also submit rankings of the top 16 teams from leagues outside of the historically multi-bid ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC to the committee immediately prior to its January, February and March meetings. Former coaches who are slated to serve include: Scott Davenport (Bellarmine); Ed DeChellis (East Tennessee State/Penn State/Navy); Fran Dunphy (Penn/Temple/La Salle); Seth Greenberg (Long Beach State/South Florida/Virginia Tech); Jeff Jones (Virginia/American/Old Dominion); Phil Martelli (Saint Joseph’s/Michigan); Norm Roberts (St. John’s); and Gary Waters (Kent State/Rutgers/Cleveland State). We take this matter seriously and will address it in accordance with university policies and procedures.” (link)

I am proud of our players and coaching staff for remaining focused on concluding our fall training programs - including a 13-3 win on Sunday versus West Virginia to conclude their fall schedule - and buckling down for the stretch run of the academic semester. ➤ ESPN men’s hoops analyst Dick Vitale says he’s full speed ahead to work games this season, telling the East County Observer’s Jay Heater it’s part of the fight: “It’s not easy battling cancer. There is lots of chemo and radiation. But I always think positive, and I have faith. If you don’t, cancer will eat you alive. My advice is to stay active. If you do nothing, lay in bed, it will eat you up.” Dickie V adds: "You need to have that energy and enthusiasm. So I won't accept any project unless I can finish it. If I can't be me, I won't accept that assignment." (link)
➤ ESPN/SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum says he’s unsure about his contract with the company after it expires at the end of football season, telling Awful Announcing: “The contract technically runs out in July, but I’m a college football analyst. So at the end of January, I will probably start contemplating exactly what is next. But I would be foolish to tell you anybody who is in the last year of a contract doesn’t think about it. Troy Aikman thinks about it, so does everyone else. But I would also be foolish to tell you I know what I’m going to do next.” Finebaum adds: “I intend to continue doing what I’m doing, which is doing a show of some sort, but I don’t know how it will be constructed. These are always awkward situations that are probably best not discussed in the public airwaves, but then again, here we are.” (link)
