The 2026 State of AI in Sports Report from Teamworks and Front Office Sports reveals a gap: 90% of sports organizations expect their AI usage to grow, yet only 15% can prove measurable ROI today. Based on responses from leading professional teams, leagues, and collegiate athletic departments, the report shows what separates top performers from the rest. Deploying AI department by department yields virtually no return. Organizations with dedicated AI budgets, accountable leadership, and connected athlete records see ROI rates of up to 67%. “If the economics were even, we wouldn't be having any of these conversations. Thing is, we sit in the second tier. It's a reason we don't get a vote on the 24-team playoff and the Big Ten and SEC do.”

Joe Echevarria

Miami (FL) President on the financial & legislative realities of the ACC

The NCAA will expand bracket seeding to 50% of the tournament fields in both Division I field hockey and men’s soccer, starting in the 2026-27 academic year, to provide greater competitive balance and an improved championship experience by prioritizing match-ups based on team strength over geography. Under the revised format, field hockey will double its seeded field from four to eight teams, while men's soccer will increase its seeded field from 16 to 24 teams. NCAA VP of Championships Governance and Policy Liz Turner Suscha: “The selection committees working on these sports do an excellent job of identifying top teams and setting up pairings. Seeding more teams will enhance the work that they do to produce competitive fields for the field hockey and men’s soccer championships.” (link)

“It’s just business.” That’s Miami (FL) President Joe Echevarria’s simple retort when questioned about the school’s refusal to accept its current status quo as a “second class” member in the growing college athletics caste system, per Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger. Echevarria: “We are proud members of the ACC. If the economics were even, we wouldn't be having any of these conversations. Thing is, we sit in the second tier. It's a reason we don't get a vote on the 24-team playoff and the Big Ten and SEC do.” More…

➤ The campus buzz over the Canes’ new No. 1 ranking is emblematic of the football program’s “outsized” brand. That’s why “Miami is now positioning itself for a move into college athletics's top financial and social stratosphere, the SEC and Big Ten; why the school (and several others in the ACC) has been forced to explore aspects of football independence; and why the university, despite rebuke from congressional lawmakers and those connected to the White House, is fighting against a federal bill that stands to prevent further realignment in the industry.” Echevarria: “You cannot lock us into a conference. The fact is that we won about every game you could win last year and maxed out in revenue in our current [ACC] sharing model. And we made the same amount of money as other institutions [in the Big Ten and SEC] whose football programs operate at different levels of investment and performance.”

➤ Miami is investing heavily in football, with a roster spend that many believe tops $40M, but the Big Ten and SEC currently distribute an average of $25M more annually per school than the ACC. That gap is expected to double by 2030 when media rights deals are renegotiated. The ACC's binding ESPN TV deal doesn't conclude until 2036, and though the league pushed through an uneven revenue distribution model, the financial inequities with the power two leagues are fixed — still very much a frustrating point for administrators like Echevarria. “There's a reason certain conferences and programs have a greater influence in shaping the future of college football. Their collective competitive success and viewership give them leverage. There's no secret to this. It's just business.”

➤ The university has reportedly been exploring life as a football independent with media partners such as Amazon should federal legislation force their hand. Echevarria “hopes that reasonable minds prevail” and members amend language in the PCSA’s realignment provision when the House returns to session in mid-November. “If we have to go independent, I like our chances because we are a national brand. I wouldn't like to do that because scheduling [other sports] is really tough. It's great for football but what about track, volleyball and the golf team? … As an AAU research institution, we line up with the Big Ten's profile. We have an exceptionally strong profile that compares favorably with leading research institutions across the country. On the geography idea, we line up better with the SEC.” (link)

ESPN is permitted to sublicense six of the 12 new playoff games under the expanded 24-team College Football Playoff package annually to just one other new media entity, or TNT Sports can expand its existing sublicensing package. Here’s more…

➤ Writing for On3, Ross Dellenger notes the added restrictions emerged after ESPN's previous TNT Sports sublicensing deal last June surprised several FBS conference commissioners, who two years earlier had entrusted the network with the playoff's $1.3B annual media rights through 2031.

➤ “That means ESPN cannot sell off the new inventory to, say, NBC and CBS. Or Amazon and Netflix. Or Fox and Apple. Only one new partner is permitted if TNT decides against buying more games.” While ESPN must consult with the CFP regarding sublicensing the new inventory, consisting of eight first-round and four second-round games, it doesn’t require commissioners' approval.

➤ Additionally, the new deal freezes any further expansion beyond 24 teams until at least the end of the current contract in 2031.

➤ Of note: “Fox would appear to be interested in buying new playoff inventory from ESPN. After all, Fox Sports CEO Eric Shanks publicly supported expansion to 24 teams. Will ESPN part with its inventory to what many believe is its top competitor?” One industry stakeholder: “For the right price perhaps.” (link)

Big Ten Chief Operating Officer Kerry Kenny tells ESPN’s Pete Thamel there’s not a specific SEC-Big Ten scheduling agreement being announced, as has been intimated publicly. When the CFP formally expands to 24 teams starting in 2027, every Big Ten team is committed to an annual non-conference game against a power team. Thamel adds: “That matches the scheduling of the other three power leagues. All four power conferences have been working for weeks to ensure everyone meets that standard in 2027. Moving forward, the Big Ten will continue to discuss opportunities to play the SEC on a more consistent basis - along with playing the Big 12, ACC and Notre Dame.” (link)

Mercury Public Affairs SVP/Game Day Media Founder Alex Fulton has launched the new College Sports United PAC, per Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich. Registered with the FEC back on September 22, the PAC plans to utilize targeted advertising and direct voter outreach to specifically target opposition House members to pass the PCSA without amendments before the next session ends. Fulton: “Our goal is to ensure that the constituents in their districts understand the ramifications of their bad stances. We are going to go to the constituents directly to apply pressure to ensure that the voters know exactly why it is important that this bill passes the House.” He described those who have encouraged the PAC’s formation as “smaller Division I institutions’ boosters and donors,” adding: “Essentially, all the donors that we’re talking to in these smaller schools have been very, very vocal [about] having their seat for the university at the table.” While the PAC has yet to report any financial donations, Fulton noted it has received a “good amount” of pledges and “expects to collect its first funds by the end of this week.” More, including the Statement of Organization. Virginia Tech is expanding premium seating options at Cassell Coliseum for the upcoming basketball season, increasing the total number of courtside and baseline seats from 54 to 176, while adding 32 new loge seats. The Hokies removed courtside tables to fit a second row of floor seating, added what it’s calling "Hollywood" seats, two rows of courtside seats between the scorer's table and home bench, and replaced press area tables to build loge seats equipped with elevated chairs near stocked fridges. Front-row floor seats for men's basketball will run $8,500 ($12K for "Hollywood" seats), while women's basketball front-row seats will be priced at $910 and wrestling first-row matside seats at $250. Tech AD Brian White: “The No. 1 thing I heard about Cassell was that there's not a lot of premium in there. The one thing … about modern college basketball is you can generate a lot of revenue with premium. So we're trying to maximize the premium with the footprint we have.” (link)

Albany is moving forward with a comprehensive renovation of its Physical Education Building after securing funding for the next phase of improvements, which began back in 2022. The project includes a $76M rehabilitation of the building’s basement and first floor with more than 102K-square-feet set to be redesigned to create modern, flexible spaces to support student fitness, recreation and athletic rooms. Those include a new Nutrition Center located on the concourse level; a permanent space for Sport Medicine; a 23K square-foot fitness center housed in the former pool area; and updated locker rooms. Construction is set to begin this December 18 and be completed in summer 2030. (link)

Idaho State announces a major transformation of the indoor track and field facilities inside the ICCU Dome. Made possible through philanthropic support from the Simplot Company Foundation and alums Dick and Connie Luebke, the privately-funded, $6M project will replace the approximately 50-year-old wooden track with a new indoor track and field system. The installation will combine a permanent flat track with a portable 200-meter banked oval, featuring a high-performance synthetic surface across the event floor, with sprint lanes, a throwing ring and other integrated elements designed to meet modern NCAA and World Athletics standards. The project includes two phases, the first of which will include construction and assembly of the portable 200-meter banked track. Following the 2027 spring football season, phase two will take place with construction and installation of the permanent Mondo surface on the event floor, with completion expected by August 1, 2027, in time for the fall football season and football turf reinstallation. All venue elements are expected to be fully completed in time for the indoor track and field competition and the Simplot Games in spring 2028. (link)

The Sun Belt has inked the most lucrative primary agreement in league history, including its first to feature a guaranteed bowl matchup with an autonomy conference opponent, to compete in the TransPerfect San Juan Bowl against an ACC opponent on December 16.  The match-up will be contested at Hiram Bithorn Stadium—with a primetime kickoff at 7:30 p.m. ET—and represent the first-ever FBS bowl game contested in Puerto Rico. Le Moyne is “on the cusp” of moving from the NEC to The Metro starting in 2027-28, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel, with a deal “expected to come together in the near future.” (link)

Southeastern Louisiana and AD Jay Artigues have agreed in principle to a contract extension through Dec. 31, 2029, that maintains his $210,610 annual base salary, according to CollegeAD. The extension offers up to $40K in annual performance incentives—capped at $20K for budget and fundraising milestones (including up to $25K for raising over $2.5M) and $20K for academic and athletic achievements. Artigues would owe a $50K buyout if he leaves for another Southland Conference school, while a termination without cause obligates the university to pay the remainder of his salary for that fiscal year plus any earned incentives. BYU AD Brian Santiago addressed the recent restructuring of the athletic department that shifted football oversight away from his office, noting the move reflects a collaborative effort to adapt to the changing landscape of college athletics. Following reports that Football HC Kalani Sitake now reports directly to Advancement VP Keith Vorkink, Santiago maintained that the administration remains closely connected on football operations and emphasized his ongoing relationship with Sitake remains strong. More key takeaways…

➤ "It’s a changing landscape of college athletics, we look at (restructuring) as everybody leaning in on how we can continue to chase greatness and chase excellence. I’m going to look at it always as we’re on the same team, we’ve got to continue to be great."

➤ On his relationship with Sitake: “I feel that I’ve always had a good relationship with Kalani. We saw each other the other night and had a good conversation with all the student-athletes there at our President’s fireside. Kalani and I have been in this together for 11 years, and we’re going to try to continue to chase the same thing, and that’s success for the program. To see how the program has elevated, nobody is more excited than I am for the success of BYU football."

➤ Tuning out external criticism following the administrative changes: "Right now, things are better than they’ve ever been in the history of our athletic department. … Like I said, you’ve got to look at what’s happening and focus on the positives, and that’s what we’re going to continue to do." Fox college football analyst Joel Klatt expects a scheduling agreement between the SEC and Big Ten to be announced shortly after College Football Playoff expansion to 24 teams becomes official, telling KTCK-FM 96.7 The Ticket in Dallas: "There are scheduling agreements that are in place once this thing expands officially. The next thing that will happen almost immediately is we're going to get scheduling agreements between the SEC and the Big Ten – top-end matchups, mid-tier matchups, low-end matchups – and we're going to be expanding the valuable matchups in the non-conference, far surpassing what we have now." FootballScoop’s Zach Barnett subsequently notes: “If they were to play exclusively against one another, the SEC and Big Ten would box the ACC and Big 12 out of opportunities to play the 34 schools in the two conferences and, thus, make it more difficult for ACC and Big 12 teams to pick up bids to the 24-team event.” (link)

Nevada has unveiled a new institutional brand positioning initiative, including a modern visual system, new logos and a brand campaign, “Where World Changers Get to Work.” The new identity marks the start of multi-year phased implementation across the institution beginning with high-visibility items such as recruitment materials and digital communications. The University’s old logos will be phased out while incorporating updates for items on- and off-campus into normal replacement cycles whenever possible. The Nevada Wolf, formerly the Sport Wolf, has evolved as the University's new spirit logo, and paired with a new Interlocked UN logo, it creates a cohesive brand system that unites academics, athletics and the broader university community under one shared identity. Nevada Athletics will begin incorporating both logos into future designs and brand activations over time. (link, link)

Utah Tech President Shane Smeed during an appearance on the Innovation with Competitive Kindness Podcast explained the institutional value of athletics and the importance of joining the Big Sky, describing the conference as “truly the FCS powerhouse,” adding: "Part of what we're doing as a foundation board with the university is really focused on three areas. One of those primary areas is athletics. ... The more individuals get comfortable with supporting students, the more they understand the impact of NIL. We're relatively small in utilizing NIL compared to some other larger institutions. But that really hasn't stopped us from being competitive. ... My goal really is I have to be incredibly invested and involved with our community from a philanthropic perspective to really help grow our programs financially so that they can continue to be and remain competitive." Miami (FL)’s football, women’s soccer and women’s basketball programs all debuted a UHealth logo jersey patch on their respective uniforms this past weekend, per The Miami Hurricane’s Sebastian Font and Jayden Gonzalez, who note it’s “unclear whether the patch is a temporary placeholder or a transactional sponsorship.” Women’s volleyball, which was on the road at SMU and Pittsburgh, didn’t sport the patch and it remains unknown if the team will debut one when hosting Notre Dame this Friday. Font and Gonzalez add: “A mid-season debut of the patch makes sense from a business perspective. … The Hurricanes can leverage this temporary sponsor into a more long-term deal with another brand and inject more revenue into an already streamlined process, or continue promoting the University’s biggest financial arm.” (link)

“A thick $13.5M.” That’s the current cost to construct the typical high-major college basketball roster in 2026, per CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander and Isaac Trotter, who arrived at that number following a six-week research project that relied on more than 100 sources across college sports. “The $13.5M is the average number across all 79 Power Five programs, plus Gonzaga, which has operated as a high-major outfit for well over a decade,” representing “the most accurate information to date on how much college basketball teams are paying in order to keep up with an ever-escalating market.” The trickiest part of the project per the authors: “An understandable motivation for some people to lie about their school's actual number.” More…

➤ The SEC leads the way in 2026-27, boasting five of the 15 biggest spenders in the sport while averaging a Power Five-high $17.3M per roster. Unburdened by the cost of power-league football, the Big East ranks second at an average of 13.6M per roster, followed by the Big Ten [12.7M], Big 12 [12.6M] and ACC [11.9M]. “The Big Ten would be No. 2 if not for having one-third of its league limited to less than $10M in spending in men's basketball. … The Big 12 is barely behind the Big Ten; the difference is negligible. While there are obviously still gaps between the top teams and the bottom ones, this league has the widest middle. Nine of its 16 teams are separated by less than $6M, and some of its most successful programs are spending about $2 or $3M less than a lot of its competitors believe. … The ACC has the widest gaps by far of any high-major. The usual suspects are in the stratosphere, while the conference also has 12 of its 18 teams under the national average of $13.5M.”

➤ Schools in the project’s Tier 1 range, spending an average of $20M-plus on their rosters, include Duke, Florida, Kentucky, Illinois, Louisville, Michigan, North Carolina, St. John's, Tennessee, Texas and Texas Tech. “Last season there were only two teams believed to be operating at $20M-plus: Kentucky and (maybe) Louisville; 2026 seriously escalated college basketball's spending ceiling. … [Florida has] a collective valuation north of $25M, putting [it] alongside the likes of two bluegrass blue bloods, Louisville and Kentucky, and ranking among the richest rosters in college hoops. What's more, the Gators didn't rely on a spate of portal pickups like many others occupying the top end of this tier. According to our research, Louisville has spent more on players in the past three years than any program in college basketball.”

➤ The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman weighs in on the report: “I started doing this project months ago and gave up on it because about half of the coaches are full of shit with what they tell you they are spending.” (link, link)

An estimated 7K fans are expected to travel to Rome for the Eternal City Tip-Off between Villanova and Notre Dame on November 1st, according to the AP’s Andrew Dampf, who notes fans and members of all four men's and women's teams are scheduled to attend a private papal audience at the Vatican, while Philadelphia Archbishop Nelson Perez will celebrate a private Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica. As for whether the Vicar of Jesus Christ will be at the games himself, Dampf writes: “While the arena is only about a half-hour drive from the Vatican, the pope is not expected to attend the games. Popes regularly go to sports stadiums when they are travelling internationally, but in those cases the pope is presiding over a papal event: A Mass, a youth vigil or some other event tied to his mission as Christ’s vicar on Earth. He doesn’t go as a spectator, but rather as the chief celebrant. As a result, the pope’s attendance at a basketball game, even a season opener featuring his alma mater, seems unlikely — especially considering his health condition.” (link)

Stepping into a new athletic role demands immediate focus on team culture, scheme install, and roster retention, yet administrators and coaches are routinely pulled into hours of logistical phone tag with commercial van lines, auto transporters, and temporary landlords. D1.relocation’s Director of Relocation Operations (DORO) solves this disconnect by serving as your family’s dedicated liaison. Instead of tracking down multiple third-party vendors across disparate time zones, one call or text to your DORO coordinates your entire move, aligning school district discovery, neighborhood vetting, packing crews, and direct-billed expense management so your family lands settled while you stay locked in on winning.
