The College Football Playoff is finalizing a deal to expand to 24 teams starting in 2027, with ESPN to buy additional games through the 2031 season, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel. Thamel and Heather Dinich report that the 24-team field is likely to include the Power 4 champions, the highest-ranked Group of 6 team and 19-at large spots, although those details have yet to be finalized. The top eight seeds would earn a bye, with the New Year’s Six bowls expected to remain as hosts of the quarterfinals and semifinals. (link, link)

Delaware State AD Tony Tucker will step down to become the Senior Assoc. Director of Admissions/Director of Strategic Projects and External Relations at the St. Andrew's School. President Tony Allen: “Tony Tucker came to us from a long and successful career in residential K–12 private education, and he is going back to an industry he knows well, right here at home. … He took on the quiet work of reorganizing how we serve students before we asked him to lead athletics, and then he revamped the athletics department around responsible growth, with a particular emphasis on women's sports, academic achievement for every scholar-athlete, stronger partnerships with organizations like the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA) and new opportunities for sponsorships, fund-raising and investment in critical and long-overdue enhancements to our athletic footprint.” (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker recently dispatched a letter to House lawmakers urging them to pass the Protect College Sports Act in its current form, while notably citing statistics that highlight the negative effects multiple transfers are having on graduation rates. From the missive, in part: “The NCAA recently conducted a comprehensive review of graduation outcomes for all Division I student-athletes who entered college sports in 2018. Despite the fact that many in this class graduated before the current unlimited transfer policy went into effect, we are already seeing fewer Division I student-athletes graduating in six years. Across race, gender and sport, our review found that multiple transfers negatively impact student-athlete graduation. Of those who did not transfer, 88% graduated on time, and 12% did not. Of one-time transfers, 81% graduated on time, and 19% did not. And only 71% of multiple transfers graduated on time, while 29% did not. For decades, participating in NCAA sports provided a pathway to academic success at rates that far surpassed those for nonathletes, but endless attacks on eligibility and transfer rules are threatening that success.” (link)

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey sat down with both CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander and 247Sports’ Kyle Tucker at the SEC Basketball Tipoff to discuss a myriad of topics. Here’s what you need to know…

➤ On March Madness binding Division I together to prevent potential breakaways: "I do think one of the impediments to this departure idea is the expectation that big and small, north, south, east, west, public, private, liberal arts, public research all come together with basketball teams and have what is really a ‘Hoosiers’-type moment. That's what America expects. ... Why are Fordham and Florida in Division I together? Why [are] Montana State and Ole Miss? Why [are] Texas and Tennessee Tech? … It's because of March. And you can make up all the other reasons. In my opinion, it's because of March. And that's a cultural expectation."

➤ Evolving governance among the Power 4 conferences: “We've tried to adapt over time, and this is where there's maybe more authority and responsibility given to the four conferences in decision making. I don't think we can solve big problems in big rooms filled with people. And every problem we have is a big problem right now, in my opinion. And so the adaptation needs to continue about how we govern ourselves nationally. … We have to have a decision making process and eligibility standard. An agreement to make that work.”

➤ Describing the job of a power league commissioner in 2026: "It's intense, but that would've been five, six, seven years ago. It is transformational. And I think that's always been part of the collegiate environment, but it's accelerated.” (link, link)

“Can Greg Sankey's proposed College Football Playoff scheduling requirement work?” Writing for On3, Ross Dellenger posits that for Power 4 leagues outside the ACC, which is currently the only conference in which each school is slated to play 10 P4 games in 2027, things would likely get “real tricky,” assuming the requirement takes effect next season and the College Football Playoff actually expands (see above). Dellenger notes P4 programs without a non-conference power opponent in 2027 include five Big Ten members, one SEC school and five Big 12 programs. With expansion looming, athletic administrators at those schools find themselves in somewhat of a scramble mode. Dellenger adds: “Can the Big Ten and Big 12 schools strike scheduling agreements? That seems like the easiest route here. Oregon plays Arizona; Washington gets Kansas; Texas Tech meets Indiana; USC against TCU; West Virginia vs. Nebraska. … Not so fast. Who gets the home game? And the advantage and dollars that come with it? Do you strike a two-year home-and-home? These are questions being asked.” More on scheduling, Dellenger: “Notre Dame is expected to increase its frequency of playing SEC and Big Ten schools as part of the 24-team expansion.” (link, link)

With the CAA’s current media rights contract set to end with the 2026-27 season, Commissioner Joe D'Antonio says the league’s negotiating with FloSports and CBS Sports Network on an extension, while also exploring outside options. “The good news is that we're going to have options. ... There are options both within our current structure and outside of our current structure." (link)

Boise State secured unanimous approval from the Idaho State Board of Education on Wednesday for an $18M athletic department deficit spending plan, most of which will go into student-athlete revenue sharing. President David Hahn: “I personally don’t even like the term … deficit in athletics. Boise State is not running a deficit. We are managing our reserves, we are managing our finances. I’m putting that capital where it needs to be for success of all of the missions.” Per Idaho Education News’ Kevin Richert, the department now projects a $16.9M deficit for the current fiscal year ending June 30, with rev-sharing distributions set to increase from about $10M to $14.1M. The university plans to contribute $3M toward athletic debt service, while the department hopes to clear $2M from special events at Albertsons Stadium, including two nights of the Banana Ball tour and a Luke Combs concert. If the deficit exceeds $18M, athletics would have to return to the State Board for additional spending authority. Board member David Turnbull described the vote in stark terms. “The option is to basically put a bullet in Bronco sports if we don’t give them this runway.” (link)

The Big 12 agrees to a multi-year strategic partnership that will provide Principal Financial Group with featured uniform patch placement at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments as well as select Big 12 Olympic sport championship events. SMU announces the official launch of its men’s lacrosse program, with play slated to begin in the spring of 2028. In just two months, athletics has already brought in $15M to support what will represent the first men’s lacrosse program in the state of Texas, against a goal to raise $25M by April 1, 2027. ➤ Indiana inks a five-year agreement to expand its partnership with Merchants Bank by naming the financial institution the Hoosiers’ official jersey patch partner. Through the deal, which follows up a 20-year, $50M naming rights pact with the company last fall, Merchants Bank branding will appear on uniforms across IU’s 24 varsity sports programs, as well as on coaches' apparel. ➤ Columbia has suspended Women’s Basketball HC Megan Griffith for the initial three games of the upcoming 2026-27 campaign after a review determined she “had coaching interactions with the team that didn’t align with expectations.” Per the AP’s Doug Feinberg, an external firm evaluation was done after the university received a complaint about Griffith’s coaching behavior during practices from a prior season. The school also noted the review didn’t require NCAA notice of any rules violations and didn’t involve any allegations of violations of the school’s anti-discrimination, Title IX or related policies. The women’s basketball team notified the AP that it was aware of the suspension. “This is not indicative of our experience as part of this program, which has been overwhelmingly positive. We fully stand with and support Coach Griffith. This program is a family, and we pride ourselves on being a supportive and inclusive environment for all. We are ready to attack the season.” (link)

CollegeAD reports that Rice’s AD search “may soon get underway. Sources familiar with the process tell CollegeAD that officials from Parker Executive Search were recently in Houston to meet with Rice officials. Sources say Parker is already in the early stages of vetting candidates. The belief, we're told, is that the Owls are hoping to have a new AD in place by Thanksgiving.” (link) For those wanting to be in the mix, be sure to utilize the D1.dossier for the position. (link)

Arkansas Men’s Basketball HC John Calipari was asked about Razorbacks AD Hunter Yurachek at SEC Media Days and replied: “The best thing for this program: we're not in debt. Now, there are not many programs around the country that can say they're not in debt. We're not in debt. He's been great for me. Part of the reason I took the job is, I sat down with him and I was comfortable. Everything he said he would do, he did. I'm looking around the room, saying, 'What? Are we losing our minds here?' He has kept us to where we can now figure out how we're going to go forward. But I understand you got ADs being fired around the country. You know why? Because their programs are in debt: $200M, $100M, $150M, and so they're firing ADs now, but he's going to do fine. I wish we'd have won that football game for our football players, our coach, and Hunter. But you don't know what's in the cards. I just know he's a good man." (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger chronicles James Madison’s rapid ascent in college athletics, culminating in the recent move to the American and notes the rise stems from a multi-decade administrative alignment that views successful sports programs as a primary enrollment driver. Formerly an all-women's institution known as Madison College, longtime administrators traced the department's transformation back to a key decision in the mid-2000s to eliminate 10 sports programs to comply with Title IX, allowing the university to fully resource its remaining 18 teams. Under Football HC Billy Napier, Dellenger observes the 6-0 Dukes are capitalizing on a player-led culture while the university plans a multibillion-dollar campus project featuring a commercial district and a rebuilt east side of Bridgeforth Stadium. While the future looks bright, Dukes GM Cliff Wood acknowledges there will always be financial hurdles to overcome: "We're going to need money to maintain. Same as moving from FCS to FBS. In order for us to be successful, people have to put their money where their mouth is." (link)

Houston AD Eddie Nuñez spoke with TUDN Radio Houston’s Cesar Procel about football attendance challenges, Hispanic community outreach, the need to grow athletic department revenues and more. Here’s what you need to know…

➤ Early kickoff times impacting stadium attendance: "[An] 11 o'clock game doesn't make it easy on a Saturday. There's a lot of families that have kids' events. When you start thinking about, well, I've got kids, they're playing games, basketball, football, this, that, birthday parties. It just gives them another reason why not to come. We have a huge and tremendous fanbase. The thing for us now is letting them understand, come enjoy the experience. ... Having a 6:30 game is a lot different than having 11 o'clock. Look, we have a great product, we have a great coach, we have a great environment. Now it's putting it all together."

➤ Setting attendance targets for home games: "My staff knows we're pushing everything to try to get 40K-plus in there. Now the reality is if we're at 35K, that's still better than where we were. What I don't want to do is be where we were last week. … For me, it's let's get 10K students, let's get 40K people there. If we get 35K at the end of the day, am I going to still be proud? Absolutely. … Because we're going to make it great. And that environment, if they do what they're capable of doing, it's going to help our team be even better than they are."

➤ UH’s most pressing need: "Right now, because of everything, it's finding money. It's trying to find new ways to create new revenue. And for us, that may be through businesses, partnerships with local businesses. One of the ones that I'm starting to really get a better relationship with is Goya and others. Hispanic companies, other companies that are based here in Houston, getting them to help us really elevate what we need financially and be partners with us." (link)

San Jose State AD Jeff Konya appeared on the HQ Sportscast to discuss the athletic department's record-breaking fundraising pace and ongoing facility upgrades. Key takeaways…

➤ Economics of modern roster construction: "In this new world environment when we came in as the caboose budgetarily in the old Mountain West and we're not that far from where we are the caboose in the newly formed Mountain West with some new members trying to put revenue share, institutional rev share and NIL plan so we can retain our competitiveness into that framework has been somewhat of a challenge but we've been able to do it. … The results are the results and there’s an ultimate scorecard with everything in intercollegiate athletics.”

➤ Improving the east side of the football stadium: "What we need to compete is to be able to get more revenue into our program. And the only way we're going to be able to get more revenue into our program is to have more premium opportunities in our football game day. ... Unfortunately when we looked at a solution way back in ‘21-22 at one price point, it's nearly 2x or 3x to that now given the inflation and some of the cost materials that have happened." (link)

UTSA officially opened its $35M, 53,000-square-foot basketball and volleyball training facility, and the San Antonio Express-News' Greg Luca notes the complex provides the Roadrunners with two full-sized practice courts, hydrotherapy spaces, and a creator lab, eliminating historic athletic scheduling conflicts at the Convocation Center. UTSA President Taylor Eighmy used the grand opening to announce a separate $20M baseball development center slated for a December groundbreaking as the athletic department upgrades its infrastructure to match American Conference standards. SMU is accelerating plans to add a varsity men’s lacrosse program, according to Inside Lacrosse's Terry Foy, who explains the “effort comes as the Mustangs evaluate an opportunity to compete during the 2028 spring season, taking advantage of the unique volume of mostly Ivy League seniors in the NCAA Transfer Portal and their remarkably accomplished résumés, as 2025 national champion Cornell has 11 players in IL’s Portal Tracker and ’26 champion Princeton has eight.” Foy also reports that a dedicated fundraising campaign has already secured nearly $20M in donor pledges to support the new program and renovate the Crum Lacrosse and Sports Field. The addition would give the ACC its sixth men's lacrosse program, restoring an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for the conference for the first time since 2016. Foy adds: “SMU is unique among nearly all its Division I (much less Power 4) peers for its ability to add men’s lacrosse without an offsetting women’s support. Sources tell IL that Mustang officials intend to add a women’s lacrosse team, as well, likely targeting a 2031 or ’32 debut.” (link)

Georgia’s 20-17 victory over Alabama on ABC drew 12.4M viewers to lead all college football Week 6 broadcast ratings, according to The Athletic's Stewart Mandel. ABC also captured 9.8M viewers for the Red River Rivalry between Texas and Oklahoma and 3.4M viewers for Texas A&M’s contest against Missouri. Fox captured two top-10 windows with Indiana vs. Nebraska drawing 6.7M viewers on Saturday and a Friday night matchup between Iowa and Washington averaging 2M viewers. Additional top-viewed games included UCLA vs. Oregon on CBS (3.1M), USC vs. Penn State on NBC (2.9M), Florida State vs. Louisville on ESPN (2.7M on Friday), and LSU vs. Kentucky on ESPN (2.2M). Big picture: ESPN delivered a 10% YoY increase in total viewers across ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPN on ABC during FY26, marking its sixth consecutive year of linear television growth. The network captured 31% of all sports viewing among total viewers and Adults 18-49, outperforming second-place Fox Sports by nine percentage points and NBCUniversal by 13 percentage points. Female viewership rose 14% YoY to represent 34% of the overall network audience, while total cross-platform reach expanded to an average of 239.4M monthly users across linear, digital, and social properties. Programming highlights included the College Football Playoff National Championship game between Miami (FL) and Indiana averaging 28.9M viewers, an NFL AFC Divisional Playoff matchup between the Texans and Patriots drawing a network-record 37.9M viewers, and the Knicks-Spurs NBA Finals Game 5 averaging 24.5M viewers. College sports tournament operator Players Era resolved a trademark dispute with headwear manufacturer New Era regarding its name and brand application. According to Sportico's Daniel Libit, New Era withdrew its opposition before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office following an undisclosed settlement between the two entities, allowing Players Era to move closer to securing full trademark rights. Kalshi is updating its rulebook to allow for financial penalties against users who harass athletes on social media. In a filing with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the company categorized athlete harassment as an "impermissible activity" that could prompt account deactivation and law enforcement referrals. Kalshi is also partnering with tech firms Signify Group and IC360 on a "Bad Actor Program" to match abusive social media posts with registered betting accounts, joining DraftKings and Fanatics in utilizing the monitoring service. Sportico’s Dan Bernstein points out the policy adoption follows rising concerns from professional athletes and leagues regarding the intersection of sports betting and online abuse, which Kalshi addressed in a statement: "The initiative is focused on abusive, threatening and potentially criminal behavior, rather than legitimate criticism or discussion of sports performance."
