NCAA members distributed $1.77B in revenue-share payments, $163.4M in new scholarship spending and $42M in Alston awards in 2025-26, per the College Sports Commission, with those funds reaching almost 35K student-athletes. “Of the 319 opted-in schools, 307 compensated student-athletes directly and 68 reached the cap or came within five percent of it.”  More from Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger: “Plaintiff attorneys receive a 0.75% cut of annual rev-share spend. That’s $13-15M this year, which goes to escrow until the appeal. Attorneys also get 18% of $2.77B in back-damages to athletes (~$500M) and $20M up-front. Total over 10 years should eclipse $700M.” (link, link)

House members are preparing to make what could be significant revisions to the Senate-passed Protect College Sports Act, per Ross Dellenger, who writing for On3, notes such changes threaten to ignite a major procedural battle between the two legislative chambers ahead of Congress’ final day on December 18. There are plenty of “pain points” for House lawmakers, such as the absence of a prohibition against student-athletes being classified as employees, the inclusion of a private-right-of-action concept allowing players to sue institutions and federal oversight caps on conference expansion. Senate leadership insists the current draft is a non-starter for major House amendments, with one “leading voice” in the Senate saying that wholesale House alterations stand to torpedo the bill entirely or trigger retaliatory Senate additions, including salary caps for HCs, ADs and university presidents; mandatory one-year non-compete periods for changing jobs; and potential threats to universities' tax-exempt status. “We are sending it over for adoption as is. It is a final product.” (link)

The Washington Sun’s Reese Gorman and Jesse Dougherty report the major sticking point House Republicans have with the legislation is its failure to prevent student-athletes from gaining employee status. The House-backed SCORE Act, which stalled out and ultimately died in the legislative body earlier this year, barred college athletes from becoming employees, which has long been a goal of the NCAA. The PCSA, however, is neutral on employment, even if labor advocates believe its antitrust protections for the NCAA and conferences would stunt future organizing efforts. “If House Republicans insist on adding an employment ban to this bill, that could affect support among Democrats in the Senate. [Sen. Maria Cantwell] fought hard for the PCSA to avoid the employment question. … To support the bill, those Democrats all broke with the AFL-CIO, which vehemently opposes the legislation. A full-on employment restriction, though, would conceivably be a no-go for many Democratic backers.” In addition, the bill’s failure to impose limits on athletic scholarships for international student-athletes and provisions on conference expansion and realignment have raised concern. The Athletic’s Chris Vannini examines how the The Protect College Sports Act’s proposed "Lane Kiffin Rule,” which aims to prevent FBS HCs and staff from leaving programs during competitive seasons, could affect the annual coaching carousel. “How could anyone hire a high-level coach in time for the recruiting and transfer portal periods under the season’s current calendar, in which high schoolers can sign during the first week of December, transfers pick their new schools during the first two weeks of January and the College Football Playoff lasts until late January?” One anonymous AD who supported the PCSA: “I don’t have a good answer for that.” Last season, 24 of the 33 new FBS HCs accepted a new position before their previous team’s season finished. Ultimately, coaches had to give up something for the sake of the larger bill and this was it per AFCA Executive Director Craig Bohl: “A great number of coaches said, if we’re asking for some limitations on players’ movement, we coaches need to have skin in the game. While the bill’s not perfect, coaches feel this is a pathway forward to providing some stability.” (link)

The National Invitation Tournament (NIT) and Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament (WBIT) have announced changes to their 2027 postseasons, including the reduction of both fields from 32 to 24 teams while shifting selection procedures. With Division I Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championship expansion to 76 teams, the overall number of NCAA-supported postseason opportunities remains steady at 100 student-athletes per gender, with the "First Four Out" receiving automatic qualification, No. 1 seeds and host rights in both secondary tournaments. Under the updated NIT guidelines, exempt bids will shift from the top 12 conferences to the top 10 based on KenPom rankings, alongside one additional exempt bid each for the ACC and SEC, utilizing an average of seven key metrics (including ESPN BPI, NET and Wins Above Bubble) to determine qualified hosts. Meanwhile, the WBIT is establishing a mandatory .500 overall winning percentage for at-large consideration, while guaranteeing under-consideration placement for teams averaging a top-100 NET/WAB ranking and automatic qualification for non-NCAA regular-season league champions ranked 110 or better. Both tournament fields will be revealed on Selection Sunday, March 14, 2027. (link)

Wake Forest has agreed to a multi-year deal, with options to extend, to have Playfly Sports replace Learfield as its exclusive multimedia rights holder and corporate sales arm. Wake Forest AD John Currie: “As we bring The Grounds to life in 2027, we want a partner who understands how professional sports franchises build lasting commercial ecosystems around their venues, and Playfly’s experience doing exactly that makes them the right fit.” (link)

The Atlantic 10 inks a multi-year ticketing partnership with Playfly Sports that centers on sales for the A-10 Men’s Basketball Tournament at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. The company will work to generate increased revenue through sales of a full-ticket menu, including all-session packages, group tickets, premium and individual tickets. (link)

Rice has reportedly agreed to a 20-year naming rights deal with First Community Credit Union that will change the moniker of Rice Stadium to First Community Stadium. Per ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the agreement is considered one of the most lucrative in the Group of Six with Owls’ Interim AD Eric George having initiated the conversations and completed the agreement. Fairfield expands its partnership with Yale New Haven Health to begin featuring the academic health system’s logo on the primary home and away uniforms for Stags’ basketball, lacrosse, soccer, volleyball, baseball, softball and field hockey. Van Wagner assisted in development and negotiation of the deal. (link)

Nevada agrees to a multi-year deal to name Renown Health as its Official Healthcare Partner, while featuring the academic health system’s branding on jersey patches for both the Wolf Pack’s men’s and women’s basketball programs and on court at the Lawlor Events Center. Learfield’s Wolf Pack Sports Properties helped facilitate the agreement. (link)

The University of Louisiana System has engaged Deloitte to examine its athletics budget problems and recommend solutions, including whether its member institutions should depart the DI ranks for a lower subdivision or even drop to DII or DIII. UL System President Rick Gallot on the $150K study: “We really want an objective set of recommendations that will help us make sound decisions. … They have no limitations on their findings and recommendations. We’re going to need support from all levels in order to really make some of the decisions that we’re going to make … We’re not going to shy away from them.” Per the Louisiana Illuminator’s Piper Hutchinson, dropping to FCS likely wouldn’t help Louisiana Tech, Louisiana or Louisiana Monroe’s financial situation much, as they would still face significant scholarship costs but with less broadcast revenue. “[Recomendations] could include capping coaches’ salaries or switching conferences. Though Gallot seems ready to tackle the problem, athletics administrators and university leaders have expressed reluctance to leave Division I. … While competing at the highest level has some advantages, namely better media rights revenue, dropping to a lower division could significantly reduce travel and scholarships costs, the top culprits behind their fiscal problems.” (link)

San Diego State’s football team is currently dealing with a mumps outbreak as it continues prep for this weekend’s Pac-12 opener versus Texas State. Per ESPN’s Mark Schlabach, a university bulletin to SDSU students noted San Diego County Public Health Services had confirmed 14 cases and that the outbreak remained contained to a single athletic team. While the school has yet to confirm the affected program, the San Diego Union-Tribune previously reported it was football. The Aztecs' initial Wednesday availability report included nearly 36 student-athletes, including 17 who were listed as doubtful or out. Football HC Sean Lewis: “The football gods have not really favored us with the injury luck. Guys have got to be ready to step into the light when the time comes. ... We've been given a nice storm here. But this too shall pass, and we've got to be able to see our way through it." (link)

U.S. District Judge Tiffany Johnson has tossed out a lawsuit led by former college swimmer Riley Gaines against the NCAA, alleging it violated her rights when it allowed transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports. Per Politico’s Bianca Quilantan, Gaines and more than a dozen other current and former college student-athletes sued the association in 2024 under Title IX, with the NCAA's now defunct policy allowing transgender women to compete on sports teams and to utilize facilities that align with their gender identity at the center of the suit. Johnson ruled Monday the NCAA isn’t covered by Title IX because “there is no evidence that the NCAA received federal financial assistance” from the federal government. Gaines said in a statement that she will be appealing the decision. “This momentary setback will not deter me or other women athletes in the least. Rest assured, we will be appealing this decision. We are on the side of truth. I am confident Americans will rally to our side to fight the NCAA. Working together we will defeat the NCAA’s continuing efforts to trample women’s rights in sports.” (link)

When an athletic department initiates a football staff change, writing an unmanaged lump-sum check creates administrative chaos and distracts incoming coaches during crucial early recruiting windows. Modernizing your relocation framework before making a change guarantees a seamless transition that protects both staff focus and departmental budgets.

➤ Ditch the Lump-Sum Trap: Passive cash stipends leave 30–50+ families vulnerable to retail rate spikes and force business offices into tedious receipt audits, replacing an onboarding strategy with financial friction.

House of Representatives Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) tells The Washington Sun’s Reese Gorman the House will not come back to vote on the Protect College Sports Act before the midterms: “We’re coming back as soon as the election's over and we have a lot of work we'll be doing.” (link)

Rice President Reginald DesRoches has put together an internal search committee and selected Parker Executive Search to help find the Owls’ next AD. The committee includes trustees Elle Anderson, Patti Lipoma Kraft and William “Bill” V. Neville III along with Provost Amy Dittmar and FAR Leo Costello. (link)

Former longtime Des Moines Register sports journalist Randy Peterson reports that “I’ve seen [Nebraska AD] Troy Dannen is being mentioned as candidate for next [Iowa State] AD. Sounded odd, but I checked. A highly informed source close to Troy just told me he ‘Has not been, Is not and will not be a candidate’ to be next ISU AD.” (link)

College Football Playoff leaders are accelerating discussions to expand the format to 24 teams, negotiating directly with ESPN ahead of an October 9 exclusivity window deadline, according to Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger. The proposed format would feature 23 at-large bids and one spot for the highest-ranked Group of Six champion. To offset the potential elimination of conference title games, power leagues are seeking to recoup at least $250M in lost broadcast revenue, with CFP Executive Director Rich Clark noting: “The revenue is an unknown. That’s why we’re in this negotiating window.” Officials must finalize the expansion by December 1st to implement the new tournament for the 2027 season, a timeline that requires logistical shifts for first-round campus games and the annual Army-Navy rivalry. Clark adds: "We've worked through a lot of the other issues associated with [a 24-team] expansion and those things needed to happen before we started any kind of negotiation [over money].” Meanwhile, one “confident stakeholder” tells Dellenger: “If we can get a decent [TV] deal, we are definitely going to 24.” (link)

Big Sky Commissioner Tom Wistrcill in an appearance on the FCS Edge podcast discussed the state of FCS, private equity exploration, the financial realities driving national conference realignment and other topics, including the impending departure of North Dakota State to the Mountain West. Here’s what he had to say…

➤ On the hurdle to securing private equity investment for the FCS Playoffs: "The biggest roadblock we've kind of run into – and it’s kind of good and bad news – is the NCAA owns the rights to FCS football, the media opportunities, which they sell as a package to ESPN. And the primary drivers of revenue of that are ice hockey, softball, baseball, volleyball, women's basketball and FCS football. And so unpacking that in a reasonable time frame so that we could really dive into the private equity discussion, that's pretty difficult. … It’s not dead, but it’s not something we’re actively pursuing right now.”

➤ On the Protect College Sports Act capping revenue distribution: "The powers that be, the presidents, the commissioners, the ADs in this situation, they're under tremendous stress to make that work. And oh, by the way, the Protect College Sports Act just capped that at $47M. Well, where's that money coming from? Well, you know exactly where it's coming from. It's coming from those media rights contracts and that $40M gap between them and the conferences below them." (link)

Ole Miss AD Keith Carter outlined the department's infrastructure and financial roadmap during an appearance on the Talk of Champions podcast, during which he confirmed the university is exploring apparel sponsor alternatives as its Nike apparel contract nears its June 2027 expiration. The department is also advancing a public-private partnership to expand the Vaught-Hemingway Stadium north end zone by 5-6K seats with a specific eye toward student seating to accommodate growing enrollment demand. On testing the open apparel market: "We just felt like it made a lot of sense for the university, for the athletics department to see what was in the marketplace, to see what was out there. ... Hopefully, in the next week or two, we’ll have some more information on that." (link)

Tennessee AD Danny White made the following announcement via X: “Should we make it a thing? Feels like we should make it a thing. Inspired by Vol Nation’s incredible response to unusual pregame circumstances last week, Happy Hour at Neyland Stadium will be in effect for the remainder of the season! Gates will open three hours early, with half-priced concessions available for the first hour. I hope this is a small way we can show our appreciation to the best fans in the country. See y’all Saturday!” (link)

Washington State AD Jon Haarlow makes no secret of his pride over athletics’ managing to balance its books for the third consecutive year, telling CougFan.com’s Barry Bolton in a financial Q&A that the revenue side for FY26 will slightly outpace expenses, a notable development in today’s era of growing fiscal tumult. More…

➤ “I think one of the things that we continue to hammer home is we have landed at budget the last three years now ... That's something we're really proud of, especially at a time — I just saw this today — where you look at what other athletic departments around the country are doing, and the median deficit that they're running is $21M.”

➤ Donations contributed to the revenue rise, climbing 18% from the last fiscal year, to $9.2M. Haarlow notes that is growth that must continue with WSU “nowhere near the rev-share cap” and the school having devoted just $5.4M to rev share over the past fiscal year. “For the amount of dollars that we could raise, there's enough things that we could certainly spend dollars on. …. So it could be 2x and we'd still want to see growth there. But we had an increased amount of activity last year ... I would say personnel shifts and intentionality, and growing that external unit was part of the reason that we saw growth there. We also saw a change in behavior and folks starting to give toward rev-share opportunities.”

➤ What’s the biggest opportunity for WSU in fundraising? “We need to continue to try and expand that donor base. We need to continue to expand the CAF membership. And again, I know I hammer this home quite a bit, but 250K living alumni — we've got less than 3K CAF members. … We've got to continue to activate that alumni base for us to get there and realize what that potential is. So, a lot of room for growth, a lot of room for activity. You'll continue to see those fundraising numbers increase, I believe, because of the activity level that we have out there, but there's always going to be a need, and we've got to continue to chase those resources.” (link)

The initial edition of D1.ticker’s 2026 FBS Attendance Trends has been released. Kansas (111.08%) tops a contingent of 29 schools that have achieved a stadium capacity percentage of 100% or higher through Week 4 of the 2026 campaign. Comparing average attendance change YoY from 2025 to 2026, Sam Houston (172%), Northern Illinois (88.86%), New Mexico State (79.97%), Temple (68.22%) and UMass (54.33%) represent the top five for largest percentage increase. College football viewership across all Nielsen-rated networks is averaging 1.7M viewers through the first month of the season, marking an 11% decline from the same period in 2025, according to Front Office Sports' David Rumsey. Texas's Week 2 victory over Ohio State ranks as the most-watched game so far, drawing 14M viewers on ABC to become the largest regular-season audience on an ESPN platform in a decade. Only one other matchup, Ole Miss's win over LSU, eclipsed the 10M viewer threshold this year, a sharp contrast to 2025 when four games achieved that mark in Week 1 alone. Despite the live-game dip, ESPN College GameDay is averaging 2.83M viewers, tracking 5% ahead of its record 2025 pace. Rumsey adds more context "The next two months could bring viewership gains for the 2026 season, though, as the SEC and Big Ten get into the heart of their conference schedules primarily on ABC and Fox, respectively. NBC will air No. 3 Miami [FL] vs. No. 4 Notre Dame on Nov. 7; last year’s matchup in South Florida that drew 10.8M viewers on ABC was in Week 1." (link)

Fox Sports President of Insights and Analytics Michael Mulvihill notes that through September, total time spent viewing college football is up 0.2% across all outlets while the NFL is down 0.7%. He adds: “I’ve seen at least one story saying average CFB viewership is down -11%, and it is. But the number of games on national networks is up, so the higher volume negates the lower average viewership. To me total viewing time is the most correct way to look at a sport’s overall trend. … It’s tracking as a flat football season, which is fine. The NFL is as dominant today as it was a year ago. And for all the talk of chaos in CFB it’s not manifesting as loss of interest in the TV product. Perfectly healthy season.” (link)

Murray State has received a $1.25M gift from an anonymous donor to support the Vision For Excellence Fund as part of Murray State Athletics' historic Leading The Pack campaign. (link)

Clemson will keep its 50- to 60-person pep band home for football games at Cal and Syracuse this season after the athletic department declined to increase the band's travel budget to cover expensive flights, according to The State's Chapel Fowler, who notes the Department of Performing Arts group carries a $329K operating budget for the year, supported by $175K from IPTAY and a baseline $150K travel stipend from athletics. Fowler notes that expanding the ACC footprint has significantly increased logistical costs, as sending the band to Cal would have required an additional $90K, while the Syracuse trip demanded another $60K. Band Director Mark Spede: "I fully understand the current climate in collegiate athletics and why the decision was made. ... Do I wish there was an unlimited supply of money to fund all of the things we would like? Of course. But we operate the band program with the budget we’re given and live within those means." (link)
