The 2026 State of AI in Sports Report from Teamworks and Front Office Sports reveals a gap: 90% of sports organizations expect their AI usage to grow, yet only 15% can prove measurable ROI today. Based on responses from leading professional teams, leagues, and collegiate athletic departments, the report shows what separates top performers from the rest. Deploying AI department by department yields virtually no return. Organizations with dedicated AI budgets, accountable leadership, and connected athlete records see ROI rates of up to 67%. “I sure don’t think there’s this magic bullet of, hey, you know what, there’s this idea nobody’s thought of, and we’re going to get an extra $20M out of that. Peanuts feed elephants.”
Josh Heird
Louisville’s AD on identifying new revenue opportunities

Writing for On3, Ross Dellenger dives into how the Democrats flipping both Congressional chambers impacts the potential passage of the Protect College Sports Act, with New York Yankees President/College Sports Council Vice Chair Randy Levine stating: “The answer is nobody really knows. This was always a bipartisan bill.” More…
➤ With Republicans clinging to a four-seat House majority for the next two months and more than 25 ousted GOP incumbents set to be relocated to makeshift basement cubicles, Capitol Hill aides warn absent lawmakers could sink floor votes across the remaining 20 scheduled working days. Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell: “The challenge is that a lot of these guys who got booted may not show up to work.” An anonymous House staffer adds: “There’s just no incentive to pass the bill unless Trump can get (House Speaker) Mike Johnson to put it on the floor and have the entire Republican caucus show up as they are getting evicted.”
➤ The legislation also faces internal resistance from more than 20 lawmakers opposed to conference realignment restrictions urged by ACC programs such as Florida State and Miami (FL), while incoming Democratic majorities and presumptive Senate Commerce Committee chair Maria Cantwell (D-WA) leave House Democrats with little reason to advance the Senate-passed measure before January. An anonymous senior Democratic House aide: "If you want a quote, here it is: the NIL bill is dead on f****** arrival. They’ve only got to get four Republicans. It’s just a different environment. The Republicans need us now and they want the bill more than we do."
➤ Another source suggested to Dellenger that Democrats might want college sports legislation off their proverbial plates before a new Congress arrives, which could pave the way for an attempt to overturn President Trump’s policies around healthcare and tariffs. Campbell adds: “(The election results) make it clear that something has to be done in this lame duck session, so people will finally feel the urgency to stop screwing around and playing games.” (link)
Florida State is restructuring its financial apparatus to support player acquisition after the dismissal of Football HC Mike Norvell, per Front Office Sports’ Kennington Smith III. Here’s what you need to know…
➤ With less than a month until the early signing period begins (December 2-4) and the NCAA transfer portal set to open on January 4, Noles Interim AD Bruce Warwick emphasized stabilizing the current roster and positioning the program for prospective players from the portal as top priority alongside the coaching search. “The [high school commitments], keeping in touch with them over the next few weeks. We know the portal opens on January 4. In reality, that process starts now with some discussions with the agents and key stakeholders around, some of these kids that might go into the portal. So we’re never really out of that business and we’re mindful of that.”
➤ Within the industry, there’s belief the school is positioned to invest more under a new coach. An anonymous agent: “I think infrastructure-wise, they’re prepared to put together a roster to compete in the ACC. Obviously, with the [College Football Playoff] expanding to 24 teams, they are not far away from being a potential ACC contender again. It’s obviously just putting the right pieces together, and putting a new coaching staff together that you know can align with the front office and roster construction.” (link)
Division I schools are expected to reach the 241 rescission votes required to overturn the newly approved two-semester men’s soccer model ahead of Friday's 5 p.m. ET deadline, according to GOAL.com. Rescission votes can still be withdrawn before the deadline, but sources suggested that such an outcome is unlikely, pointing to what they described as "back-channel politicking" that has gathered momentum in recent days. More notable takeaways…
➤ Of the 213 DI schools that sponsor men's soccer, around 80 are firmly in favor of the move. Those supporting the measure believe there might still be a pathway to significant changes. Maryland Men’s Soccer HC Sasho Cirovski suggested supporters could partner with U.S. Soccer to create an independent competitive division if the legislation fails: "I believe U.S. Soccer is going to step up and find another solution for the very interested schools...Maybe we get an FBS/FCS situation now. Maybe schools that don't want to do it can stay and keep doing what they're doing, and maybe we now create a situation for the schools that are interested in doing this. I think that could be a very likely outcome." (link)
➤ Florida Gulf Coast AD Brian Barrio: “62% of Division I schools have now voted to rescind the half-baked Men's Soccer year-round competition proposal. This is at least the third time that membership has rejected this concept, but somehow our governance process still requires that we find 18 more votes to kill it.” (link)
The DI Cabinet formally adopted proposals from the FBS and FCS Oversight Committees to change their respective calendars, granting schools more flexibility to meet the needs of coaches and student-athletes. The new out-of-season activities model will replace the current rules on spring practices and summer activities and allow FBS/FCS schools to conduct two out-of-season practice periods with a total of 21 on-field practices. The two practice periods combined can’t exceed seven weeks, and neither practice period can exceed five weeks. Additionally, schools will have to designate a minimum of nine discretionary or voluntary weeks for student-athletes when required athletically related activities are not permitted. The preseason practice period will consist of 27 calendar days to conduct 21 practices. (link)
With revenue sharing demands adding to a list of ever-expanding department financial obligations, Louisville AD Josh Heird tells WDRB’s Eric Crawford: “I think the days of self-sustaining athletic departments are in the rearview mirror.” More…
➤ Over the summer, athletics projected a FY27 deficit approaching $30M, a figure that could shrink by as much as $9M depending on revenue opportunities. Officials said they were prepared to cover the shortfall through borrowing if necessary, with Louisville looking to extend the $25M line of credit it opened a year earlier. Asked how sustainable that borrowing could be, Heird offered a different way of looking at the issue. “I think the bigger and broader question that every university administration board has to answer is what’s the value of an athletic brand to that institution. And if you can determine that, then I think you can figure out what’s the level of investment that we, when I say we, any university is willing to make.”
➤ As for where additional funding comes from, Heird said the department first must make sure it’s maximizing what it already owns — its intellectual property, multimedia rights, ticket revenue, donations and facilities — while also examining expenses before the new opportunities come along. “You know, that [L&N Stadium] gets used six or seven times a year, where really that entire bowl is being utilized. And so, how do we continue to create opportunities there.” The same thinking applies to other athletic facilities and to potential revenue streams that don’t involve buildings, but Heird’s not promising a windfall. “I sure don’t think there’s this magic bullet of, hey, you know what, there’s this idea nobody’s thought of, and we’re going to get an extra $20M out of that. Peanuts feed elephants.” (link)
As part of its effort to encourage big funds and companies to utilize prediction markets to guard against losses, Kalshi has launched event contracts at the request of investment firm Grand Teton Systems tied to the timing and size of payouts from the $2.8B House settlement. GTS, which has purchased roughly $400M in backpay settlement claims from nearly 6K college athletes at a discount, sought the contracts to hedge the risk of payment delays and payout reductions caused by ongoing legal challenges. Per The Information’s Michael Roddan, offerings include wagers such as when distributions will begin and whether women will receive a larger share of back pay. GTS Co-Founder Louis d’Origny says the markets also offer other benefits, because athletes who sell a claim to GTS could use the markets to place bets that could boost their total payoff: "What's exciting is that this is a genuine hedging opportunity for real world risk. … This actually competes with our product offering. We take on the risk entirely for athletes. Here they have a new avenue.” (link)
Arkansas and SMU are the first schools to feature their jersey patch and field naming partners in EA Sports College Football, per SBJ’s Matt Fortuna, who notes the Tyson Foods patch on the Razorbacks’ football jerseys, the Tyson and Walmart logos on the 25-yard lines at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium and the Texas Capital patches on the Mustangs jerseys are now officially part of the game. CLC, a business division of Learfield which manages the intellectual property rights for those participating in the game through its license with EA Sports, is leading the program as a new school-specific revenue stream with plans to add sponsorship integrations featuring more schools in the future. Conflicting reports from prominent local media have clouded the internal reporting structure of Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek, according to Best of Arkansas Sports' Andrew Hutchinson and Evan Demirel. Pig Trail Nation’s Mike Irwin noted that while Yurachek technically reports to Chancellor Charles Robinson, the AD bypasses the chancellor to communicate directly with UA Board of Trustees Chairman Randy Lawson. A recent FOIA request uncovered a text exchange showing Robinson questioning Yurachek about the athletic department's attempt to hire an outside public relations firm. Irwin reported the administration abandoned the PR strategy, but columnist Wally Hall claims the Razorback Foundation finalized the agreement and spent $60K on the effort. Hall ultimately views Yurachek’s future as hinging on whether Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders reappoints Lawson to the board in March, while Irwin anticipates a leadership transition before the end of the year, reporting that SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey asked the board to delay any termination until Yurachek concludes his College Football Playoff committee duties in December. Samford AD/Men’s Basketball Committee Chair Martin Newton chats with SoCon Assoc. Commissioner for Brand Strategy and Broadcast Dave Friedman about nuances of the selection process with an expanded field…
➤ Managing the compressed timeline of tournament expansion: "You get to those last couple of days during the selection process where you're choosing those last teams in and it was always difficult at 68. And now that we're moving to 76, you're adding eight more teams. We're going to have our work cut out for us ... literally getting the brackets done, getting them to CBS and Turner in time for the show as well as flights, getting teams where they need to be in the opening rounds."
➤ Separating close teams from one another: "It goes back to who the committee feels are the best teams, not the most deserving teams, but who are the best teams. And I think we'll stick to that principle and procedure. ... There are no bylaws or anything that says that you have to have a winning record or 20 wins. Our focus is to pick the best at-large teams."
➤ Discerning player availability from NCAA eligibility: "Our job is not to determine who's eligible, who's not eligible. Our job is to determine are they available for games and what games were they available for and how did that team do during the games that they were available for. … Each one of these conferences now … is doing some type of player availability throughout the week before games. And so we will ask that, we will go through that." (link)
In an interview with the Navigating Sports Business podcast, Rutgers AD Keli Zinn talks about utilizing benchmarking to establish concrete performance expectations for head coaches: "If we are investing in your roster and facilities and operations and salaries at ninth in the league, you should perform at ninth in the league. ... If all of those things put you ninth in the league and you're performing 14th, there's a problem there." (link)
Missouri State AD Patrick Ransdell sits down with The Starting Lineup to chat about the transition to Conference USA, the department's ongoing facility upgrades and more…
➤ "Ultimately I am a believer that we need to in some way, shape, or form collectively bargain. Because I think that's just the best way to do it. The pros have proven that. ... I think it would be really difficult to collectively bargain at the individual campus levels and state levels. I think it probably needs to be done through maybe a conference office. … If this thing (the PCSA) can't get through Congress, then I think you're going to see conferences kind of take the bull by the horn and kind of do some self-regulation and we’ll see how that goes.”
➤ Financial realities of midweek television windows: "If we're getting let’s call it $2M, $3M a year from Conference USA and we said, 'All right, we're not going to do weekday with CUSA anymore and so we’re not going to play in October on the midweeks,’ we're not going to generate $2M or $3M more in ticket revenue. So, there is no doubt the money is worth it on that side of things. … The money’s the money, and right now if I can find a dollar, I’m going to spend it about eight different ways.” (link)
La Salle AD Jarett Gerald discusses what accomplishments he’d like to see in his first year on the job and notes the Explorers will launch a capital campaign on Friday, November 6. “A lot of that is going to be investing in our students, investing in our people, and one of those big things will be investing in our student spaces. There’s two things – obviously, you really want basketball to be competitive at a high level, and I think we have a chance to do that. But the other side of that is I want to be able to invest in some of our spaces. … I talk about our women’s soccer team being third in the A-10 and some of the things that our peers have that we don’t have and some of our student spaces – whether it’s locker rooms, whether it’s a wellness center for all of our students – those are the things that I really think if we invest in those, it just builds what we’re doing at La Salle and makes people more excited about being there.” (link)

For the first time ever, the Heisman Trophy Trust is partnering with REVELxp to sell general public ticket and hospitality packages to its December 11-13 Heisman weekend in New York City, per USA Today’s John Brice. The get-in price for any of the three offered packages – Legacy, Icon and Bronze – starts at $8,500 and scales up to the top-tier Legacy option, which includes Times Square hotel accommodations, a theater box for Friday's Heisman Live event, a photo opportunity with the four finalists and a Sunday social event, among other amenities. Heisman Trust CEO Jeff Price created the public access model after observing empty tables at last year’s weekend event and to support the Trust's charitable mission. Price: “We can do all of those things programmatically that we’ve done, but you can also then get an intimate fireside conversation with the four finalists and really have a celebration of college football and the Heisman finalists, along with the amazing winners that we have and the impact that we drive.” (link)
Florida-Georgia led the college football weekend with 7.1M viewers on ABC, according to The Athletic's Stewart Mandel, who notes Ohio State-USC followed closely behind, drawing 6.6M viewers on NBC. Indiana's matchup against Minnesota pulled 4.9M viewers on CBS, edging out Miami (FL)-North Carolina's 4.6M audience on ABC, the network which also captured 4M viewers for Notre Dame-Navy. Other notable broadcasts included Wisconsin-Iowa on Fox (3.3M), Arizona-Texas Tech on ESPN (2.5M), Mississippi State-Texas on ESPN (2.1M), and Arizona State-BYU on Fox (2.1M). (link)

North Carolina paid outside law firms more than $914K to investigate workplace culture and conduct allegations involving former football GM Michael Lombardi and DC Steve Belichick, according to Sportico’s Daniel Libit. Public records show Barnes & Thornburg collected $821K after billing 1,034 hours at a rate of $990 per hour for lead counsel Nate Huff, while K&L Gates received $86.5K for work dating to July 9—weeks before the university publicly disclosed the inquiry. Williams, Mullen Clark & Dubin also received $6.7K for employment-law and litigation advice. (link)
Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders has resolved a federal fraud and copyright lawsuit filed by graphic designer Alan Tipp over the ownership and branding rights to the "Prime" logos, according to USA Today's Brent Schrotenboer. The dispute centered on Tipp’s allegations that Sanders and SMAC Entertainment representative Sam Morini fraudulently induced him into signing an August 2011 work-for-hire agreement relinquishing his logo rights in exchange for unfulfilled career promises—including marketing opportunities with Nike, brand consulting for Blenders Eyewear, and personal branding sessions with Colorado student-athletes. Tipp, who sought to void the 2011 agreement and demanded compensation after the Blenders sunglasses line generated more than $5M in its initial three-day launch, claimed he received no financial compensation while Sanders capitalized on the intellectual property across apparel and commercial partnerships. Sanders and his legal team contested the claims in federal court in Nebraska, arguing Under Armour and other partners operated under established trademark rights without prior objection before the parties filed a joint stipulation to dismiss the case. (link)
Another settlement as USC is done with the lawsuit brought by former men’s basketball student-athlete Chad Baker-Mazara over unpaid NIL compensation and damages stemming from his dismissal following a late-season loss to Nebraska last year, according to The Athletic’s CJ Moore. The complaint alleged the university dismissed Baker-Mazara when postseason qualification appeared unlikely, after which the Trojans' collective terminated his contract under a morals clause for unspecified conduct that could adversely affect the program. The university released a statement closing the matter: “USC is pleased to resolve this matter and will have no further comment.” (link)
