“I think as we look at how the college landscape is rapidly changing, and it becomes increasingly more difficult to schedule games, I do think it’s really important from a non-conference standpoint to go to regional opponents where fans can travel and attend games.”
Jon Gilbert
East Carolina AD on non-conference football scheduling strategy

Paramount has reportedly reached a settlement with a coalition of state attorneys general to clear the final regulatory hurdle for its $81B merger with Warner Bros. Discovery, per The Wall Street Journal’s Jessica Toonkel and Paul Kiernan. The agreement would resolve the antitrust lawsuit led by California Attorney General Rob Bonta and 11 other states, avoiding a trial and sparing the media company from paying Warner shareholders roughly $650M quarterly in "ticking fees" if the transaction failed to close by Oct. 1. Under Paramount CEO David Ellison, the combined media conglomerate will unite live sports broadcasting channels, primary streaming services Paramount+ and HBO Max, broadcasting assets including CNN, Cartoon Network and more without being forced to sell off cable networks. Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti, who was instrumental in challenging NCAA NIL rules, visited with the Knoxville News Sentinel’s Tyler Whetstone for a Q&A to discuss ongoing federal legislation efforts and more. Here are some takeaways…
➤ What are the nonnegotiables that need to be in the next iteration of the NCAA? “I think the proactive stuff that needs to be fixed is eligibility, which has to be a law saying the association gets to set the eligibility rules, that’s all there is to it. And then transfers, limitations on the portal. You know, student-athletes are not indentured servants but the universities are supposed to be promoting their education and their well-being in a way that’s different than an ordinary job. So, I think slowing down the pace and giving them a chance to get a fair deal going in, but then creating a lot of friction for moving around is important. But then I think the other thing that has to be there is some form of accountability so the NCAA doesn’t stop following its own rules.”
➤ Does he see his office, the University of Tennessee and UT Chancellor Donde Plowman continuing to be in lockstep on how the NCAA needs to fix things? “I think so. I mean, we got into a big, very public fight with the NCAA because there was a really severe sanction potentially coming in that was not legitimate. And the idea that you can make billions of dollars and everybody but the student-athletes gets paid is just fundamentally un-American. So, I think our interests were very aligned then. We’re at a point now where it’s time to start building and not just point out the problems but figure out a way to solve them that’s going to last. So, I think we’re pretty aligned.” (link)
Trbine is pitching top athletic departments on a "revenue-based security" model designed to raise large sums of capital at a lower cost than traditional private equity, per SBJ’s Chris Smith. Here’s the breakdown…
➤ Developed as an interest-only bond underwritten by major banks, it allows athletic departments to leverage their university's high credit ratings to trade a set percentage of future top-line athletic income for upfront capital at a 4.5% to 8.5% cost of capital.
➤ Hypothetically, a school such as Ohio State could raise $500M through Trbine’s offering in exchange for 5% of its $336M annual revenue, or around $17M. That total would be paid annually to security holders and if the athletic department’s revenue increases, so does the payout.
➤ Trbine Founder/CEO George O'Conor and adviser/investor Gordon Whitener reportedly have active term sheets in front of roughly 25 of what they deem the “top 54 athletic departments” in the country with hopes of having the first deals in place before the end of the year.
➤ O'Conor: “It’s borrowing money. It’s a bridge. And if you still want to sell part of your thing in seven years when you know what you’re selling, consider it then. ... What we have works for all business segments all over the world. It wasn’t built for sports. It just happens to be really good for college sports. … Why would you pay [a private equity firm] 22% a year or 15% a year when you can get money at 4.5% a year?” (link)
UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep Khosla has his sights set on building a state-of-the-art sports arena to showcase UCSD’s basketball programs as part of a broader effort to raise the university's national profile, per The San Diego Union-Tribune's Gary Robbins. Khosla: “It’s a dream of mine to build a new arena. … I may not be around (when it’s done), but it is 100% doable. We don’t have to always be on campus. We have to be proximal to campus.” Khosla’s idea is in the early stages but he’s pushing for a facility on par with their peers, as the early-stage arena proposal coincides with the Tritons' upcoming transition from the Big West to the WCC in July 2027. In the interim, UC San Diego AD Andy Fee plans to upgrade concessions at the 4,200-seat LionTree Arena, schedule higher-profile non-conference opponents and expand campus athletic merchandise sales into retail stores. Fee: “Our goal is to find more ways to get a USC or Fresno State to come here. It might require us to go on the road and play them. But we like that. We’re not afraid. We’ll play anybody, anywhere.” (link)
East Carolina AD Jon Gilbert outlined a non-conference football scheduling strategy that centers on regional opponents to navigate Power 4 conference expansion, per The Reflector’s Donnell Coley. With P4 leagues adopting nine-game conference slates and non-conference games getting cancelled, Gilbert is prioritizing proximity, ticket sales and regional recruiting presence through series with Group of Six programs like Old Dominion, Coastal Carolina and Appalachian State. “I think as we look at how the college landscape is rapidly changing, and it becomes increasingly more difficult to schedule games, I do think it’s really important from a non-conference standpoint to go to regional opponents where fans can travel and attend games.” For now, the Pirates still have a road tilt at Wake booked in 2028, while other future P4 contests include: at Northwestern (2027), at South Carolina (2030) and at Clemson (2034). Whether those all materialize is anyone’s guess and Gilbert says he will continue reaching out to the bigger conferences for games. In the immediate future, focusing on the ODUs to fortify regional rivalries is critical. “I think it’s important for us to schedule games across the G6 [so] that we’re playing the most competitive teams we can play." North Carolina is pursuing UNC Board of Trustees approval to “withdraw $9M from its Quasi-Endowment Fund to address increasing operational demands and support the Athletics financial plan during fiscal year 2027.” The Board of Trustees of the Endowment Fund approved the withdrawal by mail ballot, with the recommendation of the UNC Chancellor Lee Roberts. Old Dominion introduced Tim House as the university's sixth AD and Monarchs President Brian Hemphill cited House's revenue generation background and competitive drive as key factors in the hire: "He is a proven athletic administrator, a strong leader, a fundraiser, and a revenue generator. He has built a career working tirelessly behind the scenes so that student athletes, coaches, and staff can shine their very brightest on the very biggest stages." Takeaways from House…
➤ "Monarch Athletics can and should be the catalyst for expediting and amplifying those incredible initiatives and everything going on on this campus. ... College athletics is the greatest marketing platform anyone ever came up with. ... We have a responsibility to win so that everyone pays attention to everything great that I just talked about and everything else great going on on this campus so that more people want to come here, go to these games, get excited, be inspired, go to college."
➤ "This is my first time being an athletic director. I'm not coming here to fail, you know? I'm coming here to win. I'm only coming to a place that I believe can do it at the highest level. This is the best job in the Sun Belt and it's actually one of the best jobs in the country in all of college athletics." (link)
ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips caught up with The Mercury News' Jon Wilner to talk about Stanford and Cal after three years in the league: “Without question, there’s a commitment to football. When you hire Ron Rivera and when you hire Andrew Luck, to me, that’s an emphatic statement that they are paying attention to football. Both of them are all-in on sports. They are finding a way to support their teams and coaches. … All our schools go through transition periods, whether it’s coaching changes or administrative changes, changes with presidents and athletic directors, changes in funding.” Phillips acknowledges that “what I want us to do is to continue assessing how we can help [Cal and Stanford] from a travel standpoint. That’s something we talk about not only annually but throughout the year. For the (ACC) legacy schools, the trips west aren’t as often. In football, it’s once every other year. In basketball, you play two games and go back. But for Cal and Stanford, there’s more cadence, like in baseball. I want us to continue to be really thoughtful in how we’re scheduling.” (link)
Wake Forest AD John Currie addressed reporters ahead of Friday's football matchup with Miami (FL) and covered topics including federal legislation, facility development, athletic department finances and more. Here are the main points…
➤ Preparing contingency plans if federal legislation fails: "There are some people who say it'll be after the election. Senator (Ted) Cruz said it would be before the election. Who knows? I mean, this is not a new gray area — we've been operating in uncertainty throughout my career. So what we do is operate on what we know today, while also building plans for different scenarios. — if the PCSA passes, if it doesn't pass, if we end up with some other model of governance. ... Very detailed. Very detailed. Three-ring binder, tab dividers and everything."
➤ ACC revenue metrics and competitiveness against the Big Ten: "if you look at the three schools in the Atlantic Coast Conference who beat three schools in the Big Ten last week, they were in the same ballpark financially — all six of those schools. ... And according to The Athletic, all three of the ACC schools that won had less revenue sharing than the three Big Ten schools they beat. And then you look at the difference in The Athletic's reporting between where Wake Forest is and where Miami is — it looks a lot like the difference between where the mid-tier Big Ten teams are and where Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State are.”
➤ "Our licensing revenue at Wake Forest has tripled over the last six years. ... It's really important to us when you walk into a Lowe's Foods — one of our great partners — and in 50 different Lowe's stores you see a Pepsi end cap with a picture of Jake Dickert and a WF on it. That's brand extension." (link)
The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman writes on the uptick in international football games as Arizona State and Kansas tussled in London last Saturday. As far as other leagues’ plans to play across the pond, Big Ten COO Kerry Kenny explains: “There’s some benefit to the Big Ten diaspora with how many fans are across Europe and other areas of the world where obviously you want to meet your fans where they are and be strategic about how you do that. (NFL and other college games) are all data points that we need to study before figuring out whether or not just moving a game over there for the splashy headline of moving a game makes the most sense.” While the ACC doesn’t directly advocate for international games, it does help facilitate all neutral-site contests and coordinate logistics. ACC SVP for Football Michael Strickland adds: “We give them a lot of guidance of what their proposal should look like. If we feel like it’s worthy of being passed along, then more times than not we do because we want to be transparent with our membership.” (link)
North Alabama inaugurated Bank Independent Stadium by defeating Alcorn State on Saturday, and Lions AD Josh Looney remarked on the atmosphere: “What energy from this community. The amount of people that have been here a long time told me they had tears in their eyes at some point during this game — some told me multiple times during the game — which is really cool. I’ve been here five years and it’s amazing to see that. I can’t imagine the people that’ve been waiting five decades for this night, and it delivered.” (link); Check out the festivities outside the stadium leading up to kickoff. (link, link)
More from new UCLA AD Tim Harris with the California Post’s Ben Bolch as Harris says the key to financial sustainability is in securing a robust season-ticket base: “It’s why the Lakers were so successful because we started out sold out of season tickets, you know, every year. It is a huge relief when you have that going in because tickets are the portal to everything because a ticket is the ultimate expression of interest. If you can sell tickets, you can sell sponsorships. If you’re selling tickets, you’re gonna get social media engagement. If you’re selling tickets, donors are paying attention. It’s the ultimate expression.” (link)
Playfly has released its new Playfly Sports FanScore: The Premium Opportunity in College Sports, a new report built on a custom Vision Insights survey of collegiate premium attendees, paired with pricing and capacity research across the FBS, the NFL, and the NBA. It’s full of actionable data, including…
➤ 86% of college football fans and 91% of college basketball fans who have attended a collegiate game in a premium or hospitality area have also sat in premium seating at a pro event within the past two years.
➤ Premium college attendees are six years younger on average than non-premium attendees, and purchase rates barely move across income brackets. The older, high-income donor stereotype does not hold up.
➤ The jump from the best standard seat to the cheapest premium seat runs a median of +93% across the G6 and +19% across the P4. In the NFL it is -6%. Where the ladder has no middle rungs, fans do not climb.
➤ Top-quartile FBS programs grew all-sport ticket revenue 33.8% between 2016 and 2025. The bottom quartile grew 8.2%. (link)

The Illinois Board of Trustees approved a new six-year contract for Women’s Basketball HC Shauna Green that includes a $1.2M signing bonus and a four-year non-compete clause covering NCAA and WNBA teams, according to the Illini Inquirer's Jeremy Werner. The agreement increases Green's annual retention pay from $200K to $225K and raises her average annual salary by $117.5K across the guaranteed six years. The deal can extend up to 10 years—adding $50K in compensation per extension—if the program reaches four NCAA Tournaments over six years, and Werner notes: “The non-compete clause means Green isn't going anywhere for the next four seasons, allowing the Illini to continue to build on an amazing resurgence in Green's first four seasons, and she gets a big signing bonus and a solid annual pay bump in return.” (link)

DraftKings utilized machine learning to identify and target unprofitable customers with increased promotional incentives, according to a New York Times investigation by Alex Klavens, Walt Bogdanich, and Jenny Vrentas. The online gambling giant, which reported $8.7B in gross revenue and distributed roughly $3B in promotions last year, deployed an internal data science team to build an "elasticity" model that analyzed dozens of variables—including betting frequency, daily account balances, and loss-to-wager ratios—to isolate bettors most likely to respond to free bets and bonuses by losing more money. The platform then prioritized its promotional spend toward those elastic losers while simultaneously sidelining a separate data science project designed to build predictive models that would proactively flag customers exhibiting signs of problem gambling. Despite multiple former employees raising concerns over the predatory nature of the targeted incentives, DraftKings Chief Responsible Gaming Officer Lori Kalani defended the strategy: "It’s a marketing tool that every company out there uses. ... Customers who are betting within their means, are betting for entertainment and betting for fun. ... Shopping can be problematic for people." (link)
