“$78M of that comes from revenue that we create personally. That's better than a lot of Power Four schools, right? … If I had another $40M — I'm not even talking SEC, Big Ten numbers — we’d become extremely formidable right away.”

The College Football Playoff has released a statement in support of the positions and rules of individual leagues concerning the return of athletes with professional draft, contract or roster ties to college. “These conference rules are intended to protect the needs, interests and integrity of the sport. The CFP believes that certain clear rules should be followed so that individual institutions fielding FBS football teams know what will be expected of them, and so that the public can have full confidence in the competitive integrity of the sport. Given the ongoing legal proceedings, we will not have further comments on the matter at this time." (link)
Fox Sports’ Ben Portnoy reports Group of Six leaders have been quietly pushing for an additional guaranteed spot in a potential 24-team College Football Playoff. American Commissioner Tim Pernetti: “We're supportive of an expanded playoff so long as it provides more access for every conference. ... I feel strongly that it should double in size for everyone, including the Group of Six.” Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez adds: “If you're not playing for something, you're not playing for anything. Having that access point has always been a priority, and, if the field expands, I would 100% favor more access for the Group of Six.” (link)
More from Portnoy as he chats with Group of Six leaders to understand how they are pushing to compete in the revenue-sharing era with rapidly escalating payroll disparities compared to the Power 4. He points to average G6 NIL spending spiking from $1.9M to $7.5M over the past two years in an effort to combat talent poaching by better funded P4 programs. More…
➤ Tulsa AD Justin Moore contextualized the financial reality facing non-power athletic departments: "The team with the most money doesn't guarantee you that you will win or doesn't guarantee that you will get all the players. But not being in the ballpark guarantees that you won't."
➤ G6 stalwarts like Boise State have become staunch outliers in their ability to retain and recruit talent, while mitigating outside factors that have made retention an outsized and unfortunate lesson in capitalism. AD Jeramiah Dickey: “We're choosing to be here. You burn the boats, right? We’re all in on this, and it's worth fighting for these kids, what our industry represents, and, specifically, what our brand and department represents." Broncos Football HC Spencer Danielson adds: “Do we have what everybody else has? No, but I do know we have more than enough. … We play Oregon. We play Washington. We play Penn State, Notre Dame. On paper, do they have more resources? Probably. But, in those games, there's still 11 dudes on the field. We’ve got 11. They’ve got 11 — and there’s not going to be any excuses made from us."
➤ Memphis has been among those non-P4 programs that have pushed beyond preconceived financial restraints, believed to be among the biggest G6 spenders with plans to grow its football revenue share allocation to $10M by 2027. The school is slated to open a roughly $225M Liberty Bowl renovation; has seen an uptick in fundraising from $20M+ to $35.3M in 2025; and is on pace to bring in around $100M in revenue this year. Tigers’ AD Ed Scott: “$78M of that comes from revenue that we create personally. That's better than a lot of Power Four schools, right? … If I had another $40M — I'm not even talking SEC, Big Ten numbers — we’d become extremely formidable right away." (link)
Clemson officials through general counsel Chip Hood sent a Friday e-mail to LSU’s general counsel making it clear that while the school intends to travel to Baton Rouge and play in Saturday's season opener, the participation of former pro football players for the Tigers may breach "contractual obligations between the two parties." Per Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, Clemson administrators and legal counsel have spent the last several days pouring over the game contract, which includes an article prohibiting the participation of ineligible players. The university isn’t “seeking financial damages or in no way suggests filing legally against LSU. However, Clemson emphasizes that it ‘supports the position of the NCAA and our conferences regarding the eligibility of professional athletes returning to play college sports.’" South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, who expressed strong feelings toward any pro athletes taking the field against his state school on Thursday, declined comment on Clemson's examination of the game contract as he had not reviewed it himself. “That said, he believes the SEC, as a private organization, should be allowed to govern itself and enforce its rules, especially a bylaw approved by all 16 university presidents.” More. (link)
The SEC took an “aggressive step” Thursday to combat the issue of member schools and coaches urging and incentivizing ineligible players to sue for court orders blocking NCAA and league eligibility rule enforcement by filing a federal lawsuit against LSU, university leadership and Football HC Lane Kiffin in an Alabama federal court. Per Sportico’s Michael McCann, the league is seeking an injunction to stop the school from engaging in conduct contrary to the conference’s “purpose and mission.” The SEC contends LSU's deliberate campaign to roster former pro players who exhausted their four-year eligibility window violates the conference's First Amendment right of expressive association by forcing it to connect its brand and media rights with conduct contrary to its mission. “Expect [attorneys for LSU] to argue that while the SEC claims it has authority as a private conference to set and enforce rules, it is asking a court to intervene in what LSU could characterize as a dispute involving a school within that private conference.” The case has been assigned to U.S. District Judge Annemarie Carney Axon, who presided over former Alabama Men’s Basketball student-athlete Kai Spears’ recent trial court victory against The New York Times. Florida has inked a multi-year deal with blockchain solutions provider Ripple to feature the XRP cryptocurrency logo on the field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, starting with the 2026 football season. Per Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, the agreement is expected to generate $5M annually for the Gators, believed to be among the most lucrative pacts in college football. In addition, Ripple will also support financial and technology education for UF student-athletes and the campus community, covering both traditional finance and digital assets. (link, link)
Kentucky taps UK Invests to serve as the Official Jersey Patch Partner of Kentucky Football, with the financial wellness program’s logo set to debut on Wildcat gridiron jerseys during tomorrow’s season opener against Youngstown State. Kentucky Sports Radio’s Jack Pilgrim reports the one-year deal will earn UK “just under $5M.” (link, link)
Florida State secures a multi-year partnership with Kin to place the direct-to-consumer provider of insurance and home finance solutions for homeowners on the jerseys of all FSU varsity student-athletes for the next four years, starting with the 2026-27 season. The deal was facilitated in collaboration with Legends Global. (link)

CBS’ Brandon Marcello adds more details on the LSU and South Carolina block trades on Kalshi that he reported on earlier this week. For the Gamecocks, they have denied any relationship with “Game Point Capital or any other third-party insurer related to coaching bonuses.” The four block trades, totaling $41,300, would pay out $230K should South Carolina make the playoff ($130K) and win eight or more games ($100K). As for the $662,050 in LSU trades, Marcello: “In the playoff market, 837,500 of the day's 837,735 contracts were that single trade on LSU making the playoff, according to data CBS Sports reviewed. More eye-opening, according to trade data CBS Sports reviewed, was that the risk priced at $343,375 for LSU to reach the playoffs was the largest on the entire Kalshi market that day. It also happened off the exchange because the public couldn't absorb a large trade block of 837,500 contracts at that moment, so it found a private counterparty, a Kalshi spokesperson told CBS Sports. Kalshi doesn't pair the sides, the Kalshi spokesperson said. Firms solicit bids and let market makers find the other side willing to participate.” More. (link)

San Diego State and Oak View Group reportedly paid an undisclosed $900K settlement to the San Diego Wave FC after the NWSL women’s pro soccer club shifted a home game from SDSU-owned Snapdragon Stadium to Louisville back in November 2024 citing field conditions it said did not meet “the standards required for a safe playing environment.” Per The San Diego Union-Tribune’s Mark Zeigler, the penalty was reached through internal mediation and not as part of a civil court case. According to the settlement’s terms: “the university, as owner of the stadium, [was] responsible for $400K. (Oak View Group), in its capacity as stadium manager and a related party, separately agreed to pay $500K, which [was] borne entirely by OVG and not charged to or reimbursed by the stadium.” Full sod replacement has become a regular occurrence at the 32K-seat facility, sometimes as often as two or three times a year, while representing an expanding part of the annual operations budget. Stadium financial documents note $2.5M was spent on “sod replacement” over the first four years, with another $1M budgeted for the 2026-27 fiscal year. Reached this week, Wave officials declined comment about the settlement or current field conditions. More. (link)
The average diesel price in the U.S. reached an all-time high of $5.85 per gallon on Friday, driven by Middle East supply disruptions and the ongoing conflict with Iran that has bottlenecked shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and pushed Brent crude above $95 a barrel. Per the AP’s Wyatte Grantham-Philips, the record fuel cost is rippling across the economy by raising freight and transportation expenses for everyday consumer goods, with shipping surcharges already added by companies such as Amazon, FedEx, UPS and the USPS, and grocery aisle prices rising for perishable foods, produce and meat. Diesel is now up close to 56% from its pre-war price of $3.76. Michigan State Professor David Ortega: "Early on, much of the cost increase gets absorbed along the supply chain through existing freight contracts and retailer margins. But as contracts reprice and fuel surcharges take hold, more of that cost makes its way to the grocery store." For those that don’t drive a diesel vehicle, AAA reports the national gas price average has surged to $4.14 per gallon, surpassing the previous Labor Day holiday record of $3.82 established back in 2012. Louisiana Judge William Jorden issued an injunction allowing 42 student-athletes from various sports to play a fifth season, including Dae'Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris, both of whom plan to follow Football HC Lane Kiffin from Ole Miss to LSU. ESPN’s Pete Thamel notes Jorden “explicitly stated that LSU, NCAA and SEC are all enjoined from taking ‘actions that negatively impact’ the athletes.” According to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, Louisiana plaintiffs attorney Ryan Downton says he would ask the court to hold LSU in contempt if the school decides not to add the players. The SEC, who will appeal the ruling, in a statement: “We disagree with the court’s decision. The SEC's Presidents and Chancellors unanimously adopted a clear and reasonable standard: member universities should not place former professional athletes on their rosters. The Conference and its member universities have the right to establish, through agreed-upon governance procedures, the rules under which they voluntarily compete and to expect those rules to be followed. The SEC will continue to defend this standard, the principle of fair competition, and the Conference's authority to govern competition among its member universities." (link, link, link, link)

Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti joined Andy & Ari On3 yesterday & here are his key comments…
➤ The B1G’s willingness to support a rule requiring its teams to play at least 10 power conference games for CFP consideration if it helps the SEC support the idea of a 24-team format: “We’re comfortable making commitments to do that as a league. I think you’ve probably seen some reporting around what the SEC is asking about as part of the process of getting to 24. I think [Commissioner] Greg [Sankey] is right. His position about doing things to strengthen the game. … If you get to 24, we’re going to put our money where our mouth is. We’re going to do what we said, which is we’re going to improve our schedules.”
➤ Head coaches driving momentum for a 24-team playoff format: "I give a lot of credit to our coaches. I think we did a good job as a staff here at the Big Ten in explaining why we want the 24. We went to them very early on in the process to get their thoughts about it, how it would be scheduled, the format, the access, all of it. And they were united in talking about it. Our coaches have a lot of influence. … I think other coaches started having the same opinions and that built the momentum because ultimately the coaches are the ones that have the loudest voice.” (link)
Georgia Tech AD Ryan Alpert and AVP/Executive Deputy AD Brent Jones were guests on JohnWallStreet’s Big Business on Campus podcast. D1.takeaways…
➤ Alpert on standardizing valuations during apparel negotiations: "There's always a cash element to these deals. There's a product element to these deals and there's a sponsorship element. ... If you want to take cash and translate it to product dollars at retail or you want to take your retail dollars and translate it to cash, I think that's a little bit of the misnomer out there and sometimes the leading headlines when people say their deals are so great is a lot of that can be influxed in product, but what are you using as a product standpoint? Do your programs need more? If they have a multitude of uniforms and they have enough gear, how are you then taking that product dollar and translating it into cash or sponsorship dollars that can help you several different ways in your athletic department?”
➤ Jones on repurposing campus real estate to generate premium revenue: "We are transforming our student cafeteria, which is brand new in Fanning Center, into a sports bar. ... This is not assigned seating. It's all general admission. It's stand-only. It offers about a 100 outside and about another 150 to 200 inside. It's going to have three premium bars. ... It is literally going to have the best sight lines probably in America for a college football game."
➤ Alpert on declining to move the Tennessee game to prioritize season ticket acquisition: "Knowing that we could have a tremendous home schedule with Colorado and Tennessee to start the year, it really helped us in our sponsorship growth. That really helped us in growing our season ticket base this year. ... Every deal, every situation, every contract, every offer needs to be evaluated for what is its upside and what are we trying to gain from a programmatic standpoint." (link)
DePaul AD DeWayne Peevy sat for a Q&A with the CALS Report podcast to outline the Blue Demons’ new five-year plan, "Beyond the Dream," following an overhaul that increased annual fundraising from $1.1M in FY20 to a department-record $15.6M in FY26. The updated roadmap targets specific internal metrics by 2031, including $50M in total fundraising, 10% annual ticket revenue growth, 5% annual donor growth, and 90% season ticket renewal rates. More of what you need to know…
➤ Requiring evidence that athletics drives university enrollment and admissions: "I don't think athletics can simply declare that it's the front porch. ... We want to evaluate our relationship to applications and enrollment, to interest, student engagement and retention, to alumni participation, fundraising and donor acquisition, corporate engagement, media exposure. ... The question is no longer whether athletics creates visibility, it's whether we can convert that visibility into measurable institutional value."
➤ Prioritizing revenue generation and basketball during recent budget cuts: "We have had to make some difficult reductions in force while the competitive cost of college athletics is rising at a high level. ... We kind of gave priority to investments capable of driving future growth, particularly basketball, revenue generation, fundraising, and the new practice facility. Because those things had to continue. They couldn't stop." (link)
UMass entered the 2026 football season looking to snap a 16-game losing streak and USA Today's Jordan Mendoza caught up with Minuteman AD Ryan Bamford to find out what changes the program made in the offseason. Bamford says of managing an independent football program: "It was a real challenge trying to find our footing, given the fact that we didn't have a conference to play in. There's a reason why Notre Dame's the only one that's persisted as an independent, obviously because of their brand and their revenue lines and all the ways that they can support their football program in particular. And there's a reason why all the rest of us have gone in and out of independent." More Bamford: “I would argue a majority of the inputs that impact success have completely changed here. I couldn't have said that in the last decade. … We're not thinking about ‘How do you win a handful, three, four, five games?’ We're thinking about winning as many games on our 12-game schedule as you can. Nobody's running from the idea.” Looks like the process is working, as the Minutemen on Thursday night defeated Rutgers to end the streak. (link)
North Carolina Men’s Basketball HC Michael Malone has spearheaded a $20M+ roster build for the program ahead of the 2026-27 season, marking a 40% payroll boost over last year’s $14M investment, per Inside Carolina’s Greg Barnes. Following the March dismissal of HC Hubert Davis after a first-round NCAA Tournament exit, Malone, who lacks traditional UNC program ties, reinvigorated donor engagement beyond his contracted $6.75M direct revenue-sharing allocation, uniting Tar Heels’ AD Steve Newmark, MBB Executive Director/GM Jim Tanner and the Rams Club through a more integrated roster construction, fundraising and NIL planning process. Malone outlined the immediate challenge he faced upon taking over the program in Chapel Hill: "The day I was hired was the day the portal opened, and when you consider when I walked into a room, and there’s 100 names on the board of which I know none of them, I think we’ve been able to put together a pretty good team, a competitive team, but we have so much work to do." (link)
Following the resignation of North Carolina Football GM Michael Lombardi yesterday, WRAL’s Pat Welter, Brian Murphy and Jack Hagel provide details on his departure, noting the probe is ongoing and “lawyers hired to conduct the investigation are also questioning people about whether defensive coordinator Steve Belichick used drugs on the job or provided drugs to at least one player — and, separately, about whether a member of UNC’s recruiting staff had a sexual relationship with a player, people familiar with the investigation told WRAL. The lawyers also asked about possible sexual relationships between assistant coaches and recruiting staff, the people said.” Additionally, interviewees were reportedly asked about “the culture of the football program under Bill Belichick and Lombardi. They said a lawyer who conducted the interviews was questioning current and former Tar Heels players, their parents and staff members as part of the investigation. The firm was seeking documents and screenshots of text conversations, they said. And the people said they were asked whether they had reported any potentially questionable behavior to Bill Belichick.” Lots more. (link)
SMU suspended Volleyball HC Sam Erger for two matches for "impermissible communication,” a university spokesperson confirmed to The Dallas Morning News Thursday. Erger missed matches against Colorado State on Saturday and UC Davis on Sunday before returning to the team on Wednesday. SMU did not disclose further information. (link)
Tennessee is honoring East Tennessee native and the late legendary singer-songwriter Dolly Parton by selecting one of her tracks as the football program’s new fourth-quarter song at Neyland Stadium, per Volquest’s Mike Wilson. The exact song UT has chosen and how long it will be utilized after Saturday’s home opener against Furman are unknown. Parton’s tune will replace Morgan Wallen’s “The Way I Talk,” which has served as the Vols’ anthem between the third and fourth quarters since mid-2024. (link)
Towson is officially altering the name of the Towson Center Gym to the Beynon Family Training Complex in recognition of a $1.5M commitment from alums John and Robin Beynon. The gym will be temporarily renamed the Beynon Family Gymnasium, until a comprehensive renovation project transforms the space into a multifunctional training environment featuring approximately 15K square feet of indoor turf, practice courts for basketball and volleyball and updated viewing areas for coaches, student-athletes and fans. Mount St. Mary’s has officially broken ground on the Rooney Athletic Performance Center, an expansion to the Knott Arena, Recreation and Convocation Complex (ARCC) at the PNC Sports Complex. With construction slated to begin later this month and expectations for the work to be completed by the fall 2027 semester, the 28K-square foot facility is slated to hold enlarged and renovated areas for sports medicine, strength & conditioning and nutrition as well as a hospitality space that can be utilized by both the university and athletics. Space inside the ARCC that currently holds those departments will be transformed into dedicated locker room space for the baseball and softball programs. (link)
