“I'm very bullish on where Ole Miss can go, and I hope that we look back 30 years from now and we've had as much success as Google and some of those [startups], because I think we can do that.”

Miami (OH), James Madison and UConn have reportedly contacted the American about becoming members, per On3’s Brett McMurphy and Pete Nakos. Miami and JMU are supposedly seeking full league membership, with the RedHawks reportedly offering $30-40M to join the conference. UConn is interested in a football-only relationship to maintain its Olympic sports presence in the Big East. One cited reason other schools are seeking out the American is the league’s revenue and brand, with its media rights deal ranking substantially higher than the other Group of Six conferences. In 2019, the conference signed a 12-year, $1B agreement with ESPN, which at the time was worth more than $7M annually per school.” (link); More…
➤ In response to On3’s report, the league has stated it is “not proactively seeking additional members. We will continue to evaluate the changing landscape and opportunities that strengthen the conference and support our collective mission.” (link)
➤ UConn AD David Benedict: “Would be nice to be contacted about these kinds of reports. Wasn’t aware of this.” When an individual on X referred to officials at both UConn and James Madison being upset with the article, Benedict added: “Who’s upset? I’m getting on the plane to watch our football team play tomorrow. I’m not getting mad about reports where they don’t even contact you before writing something. Keep the main thing the main thing!” (link, link)
➤ Miami (OH) AD David Sayler issues a statement on the rumors, per Enquirer Sports’ Chase Souder, who notes it isn’t a denial of involvement, but instead looks to focus on the RedHawks’ recent success. (link)
➤ James Madison’s statement: “We strive every day for excellence and to best position our student-athletes and university. Our charge is to evaluate every opportunity to make JMU Athletics the best it can be now and moving forward." (link)
Ole Miss AD Keith Carter recently appeared on The Out of Bounds Show to discuss internal alignment with The Grove Collective and shifts in the NIL era. Here are some of his most notable comments…
➤ Coordinating payroll, NIL and revenue sharing across administration and collectives: “[Grove Collective Executive Director Walker Jones and I] spend a lot of time together, communicate via text a lot along with [Senior Assoc. AD for Strategy and Cap Management] Matt McLaughlin [and Senior Assoc. AD for Development] Denson Hollis. The four of us kind of manage rev-share payroll, NIL payroll, fundraising, what is that going to look like month-to-month? ... It’s just been a great set-up, so a lot of credit to Walker and his team at the Grove Collective, Magnolia Sports Group. ... We felt like there was an opportunity when the NIL world started for us to take advantage of that, use that as an opportunity to bridge the gap with some of these 'larger brands.' We were able to do that.”
➤ On taking early operational chances in the NIL era: “We took some calculated risks early on that ended up, looking back at them, being the right decisions and kind of being ahead of the curve a little bit. ... You've got to be aggressive. You've got to be willing to take some big swings. ... I'm very bullish on where Ole Miss can go, and I hope that we look back 30 years from now and we've had as much success as Google and some of those [startups], because I think we can do that.” (link)
In the SEC’s federal court filing against LSU, the institution and its named defendants, President Wade Rousse, AD Verge Ausberry, LSU Board of Supervisors members and Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill, filed a motion to dismiss, citing no personal jurisdiction over the defendants, while noting the complaint “fails to state a claim upon which relief can be granted,” per Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, who adds: “SEC and LSU legal teams have been in negotiations this week in an attempt to strike a mutual resolution that would end the legal battle, sources tell Yahoo Sports. A resolution has not yet been reached.” Full motion. (link, link)
The FBS Oversight Committee is asking the DI Cabinet to amend a July Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee proposal to also expand scouting restrictions to FBS football staff. Originally designed to prohibit men’s basketball staff members from attending other DI preseason, regular-season or conference tournament games, with limited exceptions, the revised measure would prohibit FBS football staff from scouting other DI contests in person, including those involving teams that aren’t future opponents. The proposal outlines two exceptions for FBS HCs: attending a bowl game played in their institution's home stadium and attending the College Football Playoff national championship game. The DI Cabinet must review and vote on the amended proposal during its October 6-7 meeting before it becomes effective. The committee also voted to amend its out-of-season activities proposal to allow on-field practices and skill instruction to begin February 1 instead of January 1, as originally proposed, preventing overlap with football’s notification-of-transfer period and the start of the regular academic term following the conclusion of the season. The White House is denying reports that President Donald Trump’s appearance at January’s College Football Playoff National Championship between Miami (FL) and Indiana impacted helmet communications, per Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich and Kennington Smith III. From Trump’s Rapid Response 47 X account: “No, President Trump’s departure from the CFP championship in January did not cause headset or comms issues for the teams.“ Christovich and Smith III add: “Two Miami football sources told CBS Sports … that though helmet comms did cut out, they didn’t do so during the final drive of the game. All sources reportedly added the game wasn’t impacted. Indiana HC Curt Cignetti also disputed the claim. … White House pool reports, which track the president’s movements, appear to align with Cignetti’s version of events.” (link, link)

Unisun Sports CEO Jeff Bacon sat down with Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman and Rob Dauster to wrap up the league’s basketball media day and discuss the formation of Unisun Sports, the benefits of the alliance and more. Here’s what you need to know…
➤ Scheduling crossover basketball games to build sponsorships: "We're going to play like four or five [crossover games] per team. That's new, right? It's a lot of volume. We're putting great games on our campuses. We're going to create great rivalries out of that. ... We're working on some fun things to put behind that, right? We can put a brand behind that. ... Creating these crossover competitions with leagues … is really hard, but not when you're all together in one sandbox."
➤ Evaluating expansion candidates against the looming enrollment cliff: "We really love our 17, right? Both the eight in the ASUN and the nine in the UAC. ... These are all healthy, strong schools. They're growing in enrollment. They're all in the southeast. They're in the best part of the country to be in, especially for, you know, with the enrollment cliff that's coming. That's not hitting our schools the way it's hitting a lot of other folks in the country." (link)
Wisconsin AD Shawn Eichorst outlines his head coach-centered leadership approach and discusses the department's priorities during a sitdown on the Locked On Badgers podcast. Key notes…
➤ Acting as a head coach-centered administrator: "It's about putting a leader of a program in a position to be successful by providing them the resources that they need and then kind of taking a step back. They are the ones that are out there on the front lines. ... I lean into the coaches and ask them, ‘What is it that you're seeing and what is it that I can do to help you be successful?’”
➤ Improving the fan experience at Camp Randall Stadium: "You have to not become complacent with all of that and you've got to really pay attention to the experience. ... How are we communicating? Once they're leaving home, what's the traffic look like? What's the parking look like? What's the entry look like? Getting to your seat, what are the concessions like? All those things matter."
➤ Establishing first-year objectives: "What I hope to accomplish … this year is to continue to do a lot of listening and looking and learning and making sure I understand completely what it is that our coaches are trying to get done in each one of our programs. ... I want to build deep relationships in that regard and I want to continue to drive the momentum and the passion that people have for the University of Wisconsin and our athletic programs.” (link)
Kraft Analytics Group CEO Jessica Gelman and JaneWallStreet’s Deirdre Lester sat down for a conversation about the evolution of KAGR, as well as the company's recent partnership with the NCAA under President Charlie Baker, which more than doubled the association's consumer database in 18 months to drive new revenue. D1.takeaways…
➤ Financial and fan engagement results of the NCAA partnership: "We've more than doubled their consumer base in the year and a half. Like we're far ahead of the expectations and it's leading to significant revenue generation for the NCAA which they have to do … but also it's helping the people who are fans of college sports know when the championships are and that they get to support the college athletes."
➤ On data proving net-new audiences and unlocking capital: "It's like a net new audience largely for all of these women's sports, the investment is coming in, the sponsorship is coming in because it's not just it used to be, oh, well, we already reach NBA fans, so we're probably reaching the WNBA fans, too. But with data and being able to prove that that is not necessarily true, I think it's opening up a lot of investment and financial opportunity." (link)
Miami Dolphins owner/prominent Michigan supporter Stephen Ross is in advanced talks to sell a 20% stake in Formula 1's Miami Grand Prix to private equity firm Otro Capital, according to Front Office Sports' Ben Horney. The potential transaction involves only the weeklong race and excludes other assets held under Ross Sports & Entertainment, such as the Dolphins, Hard Rock Stadium, and the Miami Open. (link)
Nike Co-Founder Phil Knight and his wife, Penny, committed $1B to Oregon to launch the Knight College of Engineering as part of the Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact. The 10-year payout structure will fund operations in perpetuity, aiming to double engineering student enrollment from 500 and expand faculty from 17 to 42. Knight Campus Executive Director Bob Guldberg says the academic expansion provides financial resilience to counter falling birth rates and restrictive visa policies that have limited the pool of prospective university students. The Oregonian’s Mike Rogoway notes the program positions UO as a regional competitor to Oregon State—which will open a $200M supercomputer center backed by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang—and aligns with corporate partners like Intel to address semiconductor workforce demands. Following the passing of former Appalachian State Football HC Shawn Clark at age 50 from a hemorrhagic stroke, his wife, Jonelle Clark, launched the Shawn Clark Legacy Foundation and the 61 Initiative to advocate for annual health physicals for college football coaches. More than 60 FBS programs have committed to the campaign, including Georgia, Florida, Clemson, and the full membership of both the MAC and American. Named after Clark's former jersey number, the initiative encourages coaches to take one extra minute for their own health beyond a 60-minute football game, and Jonelle Clark tells The Athletic’s Chris Vannini: "We train players with nutrition and exercise plans, but what hasn't changed is how much the coaches work and their standard of care. They pay these coaches good money. To administrators, I'd say, protect your investments. And to coaches, I just say, protect your brothers." (link)
New College Swimming League CEO Rob Kent says the venture that brings together 12 SEC, ACC and Big Ten programs for a fall series of ESPN/DAZN-televised team competitions was a calculated gamble that drew on lessons from the International Swimming League (ISL) while seeking to tap into the established fan bases of major universities. “There's only really two ways to do it. You either ease your way into it or you swing for the fences. And guess which side we took." Per Reuters’ Rory Carroll, “the league, which received funding from ISL founder and Ukrainian businessman Konstantin Grigorishin, will cover nearly $1M in team travel costs and offer a $100K prize purse, with $25K going to each of the four schools that reach the championship. The money will go to athletic programs rather than directly to swimmers.” Direct student-athlete compensation is a future ambition, according to Kent, who notes the first priority is establishing a viable commercial platform for swimmers whose sport has lagged football and basketball in exposure and revenue. “Student-athletes that generate revenue should benefit. Swimming doesn't. So why don't we build something for them to do that? And here we are." (link)

President Donald Trump’s attendance at Saturday's Texas-Tennessee contest in Neyland Stadium could affect coach and player headset communication, per The Athletic’s Sam Khan Jr. Longhorns HC Steve Sarkisian: “The one thing that you have to be aware of when the president goes to any game is that any time he enters the stadium or leaves the stadium, or changes locations within the stadium, they cut all communication. They cut headsets to coaches. They cut headsets to coach-to-player communication. So you have to have a plan for that if and/or when, and you get no warning. So that just gets cut out. … If he comes in the middle of the first quarter or leaves in the fourth quarter or decides he’s got to use the restroom, whatever that looks like, you’ve got to be prepared to have no comms for a short amount of time.” Sarkisian added there are no logistical or scheduling changes related to the team’s arrival at the stadium. UTRGV generated more than $9.38M in philanthropy, ticket sales, sponsorships, licensing, and game day revenue during FY26. The state of New York has sued Polymarket's domestic arm for allegedly running an illegal gambling operation, according to The Wall Street Journal's Kevin Dugan. The suit mirrors a broader crackdown on prediction markets spearheaded by Attorney General Letitia James, including a July lawsuit against Kalshi seeking up to $36B in penalties, as well as accusations against Coinbase and Gemini Titan. The state argues the unlicensed platforms bypass local regulations and deplete tax revenue from legalized gambling, while prediction market operators maintain they are federally regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Polymarket Chief Legal Officer Neal Kumar: "We believe in New York and we’re staying here. While the AG’s decision to copy/paste a recycled lawsuit is disappointing, we’ll fight for our users."
