College Football Playoff leaders were planning to meet with ESPN today to deliver a final 24-team bracket financial proposal, initiating a strict clause that grants the network five business days to evaluate the terms. CBS Sports’ Brandon Marcello reports the CFP's exclusive 30-day negotiation window with the network is likely to lapse this evening without a deal after both sides traded proposals earlier this week but remained far apart on figures. Here’s what you need to know…

➤ Some involved are confident the two sides will reach a deal that keeps ESPN as the event’s lone rights holder. However, if no agreement is achieved, the CFP will head to the open market, where ESPN retains certain matching rights. CFP executives expect to land on a final figure roughly $70M to $80M above the $250M total value of conference title games, which would be eliminated under the new format, bringing the proposed rights offer to more than $320M. That’s on top of the current contract, which averages $1.3B per year.

➤ Should ESPN decline or allow its window to expire on either October 16 or October 19, the CFP may keep pushing for a 24-team field by splitting media rights among multiple networks to meet its financial goals. Less likely, the playoff could stay at 12 teams or expand to 16. (link)

➤ The Athletic’s Ralph Russo posits expansion to a 24-team CFP is “a virtual lock,” adding that at this point, it would be surprising if it didn’t happen. He opines ESPN has now accepted that 24 is what the conferences want. And as the home of the CFP, the network is going to try to find a way to get a deal done. “Nothing is set in stone until a media rights deal can be secured. But if you’re looking for an educated guess on what will happen, here goes. Sometime before December 1 but after the CFP takes the 24-team idea to the open market, it will strike a deal to continue with ESPN as its exclusive partner. The CFP will have more of a say in ESPN’s ability to farm out games to other networks. The network currently sublicenses some CFP games to Warner Bros. Discovery, which has broadcast them on TNT and HBO Max. And in 2027, after just three seasons of a 12-team CFP, like it or not — and ‘not’ appears to be the consensus among fans — college football will have a 24-team Playoff.” (link)

North Carolina and Clemson have both released statements supporting the Protect College Sports Act, while simultaneously responding to Saving College Sports’ recent claim that a group of four ACC members were holding the legislation hostage for “selfish reasons.” From UNC’s missive, in part: “We have been consistent from the start that it is critical to the future and stability of college athletics. Supporting the bill and seeking to improve it are not in conflict. The Senate version was strengthened through many modifications, and our request for one targeted amendment is part of that same process. Congress can protect college sports without litigating conference composition, and we look forward to working with the House to get this legislation enacted.” Clemson adds: “Clemson has consistently supported the PCSA while advocating for a narrowly tailored provision addressing conference composition. This critical flexibility would strengthen the legislation without undermining its core objectives. Clemson is not seeking to delay or derail the PCSA. We are working to ensure the final legislation protects the ability of institutions to adapt, compete and succeed at all levels.” (link, link)

UConn AD David Benedict spoke with CTInsider.com’s Mike Anthony about the Protect College Sports Act, federal coach salary cap proposals, modern roster building, the underlying value of high-profile head coaches and more. Here are some takeaways…

➤ On the operational disruption caused by continuous roster turnover and transfer portal free agency: “If we’re left with the current structure, where you have unmitigated free agency — and it is, without question — just look at the numbers of transfers and how that continues to increase. We’ve gotten to a place where, for a certain percentage of our athletes, whether it’s their perspective or that of those advising them, it’s just about how much money they can make. ... You’re creating an environment where I think the notion is, it can be better to just transfer every year for various reasons, one being compensation or one being you’re not getting enough playing time. I’m not sure, long term, that is necessarily going to contribute to helping young people have a foundation for how to be successful in life.”

➤ The difficulty of applying professional league revenue-sharing models across non-profitable collegiate athletic departments: “How do you negotiate something when there’s such a disparate opportunity across Division I, FBS, to suggest this is an appropriate number for all? The one thing that is uniquely different to me about college sports than professional sports is so much of this is driven on the passion and emotion that is connected to your alumni base and support from your state and the pride they have, as opposed to this is just pure revenue we generate from a business or an asset. If you’re going to take that approach and it’s going to be purely negotiated based on your revenue, well, what is the play for programs that don’t make any money, that actually lose money?” (link)

Northwestern has inked a 10-year extension of its apparel and equipment deal with Under Armour. Now slated to run through at least 2037, the agreement expands the partnership across five areas: a commitment to new uniform design created in collaboration with student-athletes; an investment in student-athlete NIL opportunities; increased marketing support; expanded retail reach; and enhanced performance gear for all 21 varsity programs. (link)

Adidas currently boasts three of the top five, six of the top 10 and eight of the top 20 most lucrative college apparel deals, per Profluence Founder Andrew Petcash. Penn State (Adidas - $30M annually) leads the way, with Tennessee (Adidas - $20M+), Miami (FL) (Nike - $20M+), Ole Miss (Adidas - $20M+) and Georgia Tech (Under Armour - $18.7M) rounding out the top five. Overall, the combined Nike/Jumpman equaled Adidas with eight of the top 20 (three in the top 10), while Under Armour rated third with four total deals (one in the top 10). Full list. (link)

BYU receives its largest philanthropic commitment in history from PV3 Enterprises to support football facility investments and an NIL initiative with more than 40 Cougars student-athletes. Utah and Crimson Brand Partners have reportedly begun soliciting architects and engineers for a $26M renovation of Rice-Eccles Stadium, per The Salt Lake Tribune’s Jason Batacao, who notes that if approved, the initial phase is expected to be completed in August 2027 with the potential for additional phases to be added. According to the project description, the school is looking to refresh existing suites on the fourth and fifth levels of the stadium’s West Tower; add six new suites and a club on the sixth level; and create a new field-level “Corner Field Club” in the stadium’s northeast corner, near the new North End Field Seats, which is slated to include a “pass-thru” bar, a feature bar and other dining areas. The sixth level currently houses Utah’s primary gameday operations and media areas, including the John Mooney Working Press Area, Varsity Room and Bill Marcroft Radio Booth. In the architect solicitation, the U. is seeking services “for a period of three years with the option of two one-year extensions” for the facility renovation. (link)

Long Island is nearing completion of a major athletics facilities project, featuring three newly renovated turf fields, the Field Hockey, Lacrosse and Soccer Multipurpose Turf Field, the South Upper Field and the South Lower Field, to support the Sharks’ men's and women's lacrosse, field hockey and men's and women's soccer programs. The first of the renovated fields opened a few weeks ago and is already in use. A second field is slated to be completed later this month, while the third and final field is set for completion later this fall. (link)

Morning Edition

October 9, 2026

College Football Playoff Executive Director Rich Clark expressed support for expanding to a 24-team playoff format while publicly endorsing the Protect College Sports Act, telling Front Office Sports’ Matt Iseman: “I don’t think I’ve ever said that in an interview before, but I totally am. I do believe that [college athletes] should be paid. I also believe that there should be guardrails and there should be a structure in place to keep it above board and to make it reasonable for a college athlete—and a student-athlete—to be able to be compensated. And I think things like the Protect College Sports Act. I think that’s a step in the right direction. A really good step.” (link)

More from Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti from Big Ten Basketball Media Days…

➤ Thoughts on the timeline for potential PCSA passage in the House? “The members control the timeline of how they do their work and when. … Our role is to actually lobby and have conversations, so the timeline for that is now. We've been doing that, and we'll continue to do it. That's an effort that goes across from, you know, presidents and chancellors to athletic directors to coaches across all of our sports making phone calls, explaining why this is good for us, why it's good for college athletics, student-athletes, and everybody in the system. How they actually come back and what the timing is and when, I think we have some general ideas of the parameters. … I'm just going to continue to be optimistic that members of the House will, you know, listen to the groups that are involved and take guidance.”

➤ How might expansion impact the number of teams the league expects to get into the NCAA Tournament? “I think part of and talking about expansion and why we support it is in a league of 18 and the way we travel and play, you're going to have teams that are really, really good that tend to look like maybe .500 in conference play, .500 in conference play or slightly better. So giving those teams access and a chance to acquire more spots is going to be really critical. It's very consistent. We feel like access -- we want more access in football, and by definition, more access in basketball makes sense for us. I think this is a good number. It will help, especially in the league as deep as we are with the 18 teams.” (link)

Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez sat down with The Albuquerque Journal’s Geoff Grammer at the league's hoops media day to talk about the league's competitive standing and more…

➤ Why the Protect College Sports Act is the right move for college athletics: "Because it’s a move. It’s not perfect, but it has a lot of positiveness around it. And we need that stability, mainly in we’ve got to stem the tide of antitrust litigation against the NCAA. We have to level-set the state laws because you can't have national championships with every state having different eligibility standards. And the transfer portal. While I respect student-athletes’ rights to make moves and decisions, it cuts directly against one of the core goals, which is graduation rates.”

➤ On criticism that student-athletes lacked a voice in establishing compensation limits: "I think the piece that's missing there is this limitation was a result of a negotiated settlement to a lawsuit. So they had a say at the table. It was a negotiation between the litigants and that's why they came up with the limitation. So, I do think they had a fair say. They had their day in court, so to speak. … It didn’t represent everyone, but that’s the point of class-action negotiated settlements.”

➤ Financial structure of the MW+ streaming platform: "[For] every subscription, 60% on the dollar goes back to the school that drove the subscription. So if you're pulling down that menu and selecting New Mexico, it goes back to the school." (link)

As rumors continue to swirl regarding West Virginia AD Wren Baker and the Oklahoma State AD role, a source close to Baker indicates there has been no direct contact with the university, according to The Oklahoman's Jenni Carlson, who notes Baker handles all of his business directly without an agent and has previously refused to discuss the OSU job while it was still occupied, most notably rebuffing a 2017 inquiry while Mike Holder was the sitting AD. The reported pursuit faces additional hurdles given Baker’s friendship with current Pokes boss Chad Weiberg and the fact that he currently makes twice Weiberg's salary. Carlson: "And this puts OSU leaders who want to fire Weiberg in an extremely difficult and tenuous position. They have absolutely no guarantees that if they pull the trigger and fire Weiberg, Baker will take the job, and it could leave them floundering for a replacement." (link)

Western Michigan inked newly appointed AD Alex Gary to a five-year contract running through October 8, 2031 with an annual base salary of $415K, according to CollegeAD. Gary can also earn up to 20% of his base salary in performance bonuses. If the university parts ways with Gary without cause before October 2029, it owes him two years of base pay. That figure drops to 50% of his remaining salary thereafter. Conversely, if he departs voluntarily before September 2027, he owes a $5.1M buyout, an amount that drops to $4.25M in year two, $3.4M in year three, $850K in year four, and $500K in the final year of the deal. (link)

Duke AD Nina King appeared on the inaugural episode of the Dealing with the Devils podcast to discuss summer facility upgrades, the financial landscape surrounding NIL and more. Here are some takeaways…

➤ On the summer workload for ADs: "Summer is not really what a lot of people think. We don't sit around with our feet up or at the pool with a beverage all day, every day in the summer. It's time for planning and strategizing and really talking about the year ahead, reflecting on what we just accomplished, but also really forward thinking time. It can be a bit challenging with staff. Everybody kind of takes vacations at different times, so it's really hard to get everybody together in one room to sit and talk, but it is a good planning time.”

➤ Navigating revenue sharing and NIL: "We're all looking for a competitive advantage and NIL unfortunately has become kind of a weapon, if you will, in this competitive race. And where schools are really trying to recruit and retain athletes, NIL has become a factor. I think we're starting to see roster costs are spiraling out of control and just on top of all of the other costs an institution has in providing an extremely elite athletics program. … So we're hopeful that Congress will step in and help us with some federal legislation so we can kind of stabilize what is a very messy environment right now.” (link)

Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey discussed the athletic department's trajectory ahead of basketball season, highlighting the ExtraMile Arena reseating project, the program's impending move to the Pac-12, and new infrastructure developments. Dickey noted the basketball reseating initiative yielded a 78% ticket renewal rate – slightly below the historical average of 83% to 86% – as the department rightsizes seating allocations to fund ongoing facility and roster investments. More from Dickey…

➤ Upgrading the fan environment inside the arena: "I sit there and I know everyone's heard the story that someone … got upset at my wife and my kids because they were getting crazy and believe me, I understand. ... But we're at a basketball game. Like, this isn't church, you know, and we need to bring the energy. ... If you don't want to do that, then don't come. Give me back the tickets and we'll sell them."

➤ Financial realities driving the reseating process: "My job is to make the tough decisions. My job is to elevate this institution and this brand … and right now every dollar counts. I don't want to imply it's just because of the money, but we needed to rightsize it. We needed to get people in the right seats in the right positions and change is uncomfortable but it was needed." (link)

Virginia has received a $4M gift from softball alumnus Lisa Palmer to endow the program’s HC position as the Palmer Family Softball Head Coach. (link)

Idaho State has landed a “transformational” gift from Idaho Central Credit Union (ICCU) to support construction of a new basketball arena and multipurpose facility. The project is slated to cost between $70-80M and will be fully funded through private fundraising in addition to ICCU's gift. (link)

UCLA inks a multi-year e-commerce partnership with Fanatics that includes the launch of a new official online store, which is now live. (link)

LightShed Partners analyst Rich Greenfield suggests the newly merged Skydance entity holds an excess of sports media rights and will likely shed the secondary packages TNT Sports acquired to backfill its lost NBA inventory. Greenfield anticipates the combined company will trim redundant contracts to help offset $80B in debt and achieve $6B in targeted cost synergies while preserving core properties like the NFL, March Madness, and UFC. He also advises management to maximize the value of its remaining portfolio by simulcasting as much cable sports programming onto broadcast television as possible to simultaneously drive affiliate revenue and Paramount+ subscriptions, telling Puck’s John Ourand: "The reality is that Skydance probably has more sports rights than it needs. All of the things that TNT Sports was doing to scramble to fill the hole that the NBA left—Skydance doesn’t need those rights anymore. ... There’s no doubt that if you’re going to be in the broadcast TV business and in the streaming business, then you need sports." (link)

The NFL has pledged $192M toward flag football alongside financial partners like Ariel Investments, Sixth Street, and Bessemer Venture Partners, with the bulk of the capital earmarked for the development of a men's and women's professional league expected to launch next year. Bloomberg’s Amanda Mull notes the remaining investment has funded vast infrastructure across youth and scholastic levels, including providing 40K+ schools with free equipment kits through the NFL Foundation. The grassroots push arrives as the NCAA prepares to formally recognize women's flag football as a championship sport in January. NFL SVP for Global Flag Football Brian Flinn notes the financial commitment secures a future consumer pipeline against declining overall youth sports participation and adds: "All of the altruistic reasons that we’re involved are real. This is also a good, smart, long-term business decision for us. Both things can be true." (link)
