The 2026 State of AI in Sports Report from Teamworks and Front Office Sports reveals a gap: 90% of sports organizations expect their AI usage to grow, yet only 15% can prove measurable ROI today. Based on responses from leading professional teams, leagues, and collegiate athletic departments, the report shows what separates top performers from the rest. Deploying AI department by department yields virtually no return. Organizations with dedicated AI budgets, accountable leadership, and connected athlete records see ROI rates of up to 67%. “I need someone who hopefully has some experience with campuses, and mostly is going to be an innovator and help us on that path of revenue diversification and thinking differently about how we conduct ourselves and be the tip of the spear in some of these changes.”
Douglas Girod

Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark will depart for an opportunity outside of college sports, effective January 31, 2027. Kansas Chancellor/Big 12 Board of Directors Chair Douglas Girod: “I think in all fairness, had he not joined us and convinced us to go early on re-doing our television deal, we all believe we could have ended up like the Pac-12 did, which was unable to get [a TV deal]. We certainly recognized that and believed it at the time. As it played out, it demonstrated it was the right move. His leadership and experience and network in the media world has continued to be extremely beneficial for us.” Girod to ESPN’s Pete Thamel on what the league needs in its next leader: “I'm going in very open-minded. I don't need a [Yormark] twin. I need someone who hopefully has some experience with campuses, and mostly is going to be an innovator and help us on that path of revenue diversification and thinking differently about how we conduct ourselves and be the tip of the spear in some of these changes.” (link)
Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark reportedly approached league leaders in recent weeks about a departure, citing multiple reasons from conference power dynamics to family reasons to new opportunities, per The Athletic’s Chris Vannini and Justin Williams. More details…
➤ Among other issues, Yormark had “grown increasingly frustrated by the imbalance of power between the Big Ten/SEC and everyone else.” That included the ongoing College Football Playoff-ESPN negotiations, which have been led by Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey and Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua. The full group conducted an October 15 call, hoping to mostly finalize the deal, but Yormark reportedly pushed back strongly, with that continuing into the ensuing days. He and others believed the entire group should be consulted more on the numbers and the possibility of taking the rights to market. While a handshake agreement with ESPN is “95 percent” done, finalization still hasn’t occurred.
➤ “[He] was among the commissioner group that granted overwhelming CFP power and revenue to the Big Ten and SEC in the spring of 2024, when the two leagues subtly threatened to make their own breakaway playoff on the heels of conference realignment as leverage. It was a move Yormark and others came to regret. … For someone who built a career on being aggressive and active with business, getting sidelined with diminishing power created a restlessness.” (link)
NCAA President Charlie Baker joined the SportsWise Podcast with Tulane Sports Law Director Gabe Feldman. Here are some takeaways…
➤ Benefits of raising the revenue-sharing cap under the PCSA: "The move to dramatically expand the school-based revenue share is a good thing. I think it will eliminate some of the, we'll call it games, but it'll create a lot more transparency for people around who's doing what, especially in which sport, which I think is really important. And there's no cap on traditional third-party NIL deals. People can generate as many of those as they want."
➤ Student-athlete revenue sharing forcing a rebalance in overall athletic spending: "If we get to the point where we do have schools spending plus-or-minus up to $48M in rev share on student-athletes, it's hard for me to see how that won't have some impact on what schools spend on everything else. It's a much more balanced distribution. [Arkansas Men’s Basketball HC] John Calipari, who takes great pride in the success that his former college basketball players have had, said point blank, ‘you're not going to have any teams playing in the top end of college basketball where the roster isn't going to cost a lot more than the coaching staff.’ And I don't think that's a bad thing, and I don't think he does either."
➤ Expanding the revenue and audience base for non-football championships: "Our database is everything but FBS football. Schools have lots of data on that, but we have tons of data on all the other sports. And I think there's a real opportunity here for us to work together to grow the game and the visibility associated with all those other sports. And to me, that's a big part of this conversation because if the football program is still the mechanism on which you support and pay for the deficits that are running so many of your other programs, I think it's a much more challenging argument to make. The goal here should be to raise the revenue base for many of those other sports." (link)
Florida State President Richard McCullough took about 10 minutes during today’s FSU Board of Trustees meeting to note the school is actively "looking at and benchmarking" peer institutions when planning for the future of the Seminoles athletic program, per the Tallahassee Democrat’s Liam Rooney. (link); More from Tallahassee…
➤ Per 247Sports’ Kolby Crawford, Board Chair Peter Collins affirmed the AD search “will begin next week, now that the position has been defined. He said the role is changing because of a ‘very rigorous review of the structure of athletics.’" (link)
➤ Noles247’s Chris Nee reports Florida State is expected to “create something along the lines of 'Seminole Ventures,’” similar to the corporate structures created at Clemson, Michigan State, Kentucky and others, with the ultimate goal of commercializing assets to the best of their ability. With such organizations guided by CEO-types, Nee opines that will likely be one of the new positions hired over the coming months, with that individual “generally someone with a professional sports background or familiarity with the college sports marketing and multimedia rights landscape.” That’s in addition to the upcoming AD search, with the goal for both hires to be finalized over the next 45-60 days. He also reports that Deputy AD/GM of Player Personnel John Garrett and members of his staff are expected back regardless if there’s a football coaching change or not. (link)
Sam Houston is accelerating its national AD search, with a nine-member search and screening committee, chaired by VP for Student Affairs Dr. Dannie Moore, set to immediately begin working with CSA Search & Consulting to recruit and screen candidates for the position. President Alisa White: “We are moving forward with a focused and expedited search process while remaining committed to selecting a leader who understands our university, supports our student-athletes and can guide our athletic programs into the future." The incoming AD will subsequently begin leading the search for the Bearkats’ next Football HC, with Bobby Williams expected to remain in charge of athletics until his spring retirement. (link)
The College Sports Commission has published aggregated and anonymized student-athlete compensation figures from the College Athlete Payment System (CAPS), which records rev-share payments from schools to student-athletes, and the NIL Go clearinghouse. During the first year of revenue sharing under the House settlement through June 30, 2026, the CSC recorded $1.77B in direct school-to-athlete payments in CAPS, while 46,478 NIL deals were cleared in NIL Go with an aggregate value of $582.49M through August 31, 2026. CSC CEO Bryan Seeley: “This is the first time compensation data of this kind has been published for college sports. The CSC is making this aggregated, anonymized information available to student-athletes, schools, and the public to help people make better informed decisions while preserving the confidentiality of individual agreements.” The report covers different ranges varying by sport and breaks down percentile-level institutional and non-institutional distributions across football position groups, men’s and women’s basketball and other varsity sports within the A4 leagues and for non-A4 institutions. With Jacksonville’s Everbank Stadium undergoing renovations over the next two years, the annual Florida-Georgia football rivalry’s move to Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium this season and Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium for 2027 came as a disappointment to some fans who hoped the game would be contested on campus sites. Key takeaways…
➤ Per The Athletic’s Seth Emerson, unlike a 1994-95 stadium renovation that shifted the series to home stadiums, such a move this time was never seriously discussed. Florida AD Scott Stricklin: “If we had a conversation about it, it was brief. The economics, along with the tradition of it being a neutral-site game, I think really drove the conversation.” Georgia AD Josh Brooks adds: “Obviously you always take everything into consideration, but when exploring this it was too good a situation to pass up.”
➤ While campus home games remain lucrative, both schools will receive $7.5M from Arthur M. Blank Sports and Entertainment for this year’s relocation plus $1.5M each from the city of Jacksonville as part of the deal to keep the game there. Stricklin: “There’s probably always going to be value in it financially, and so that will drive some schools to want to do that. And I know there are still cities out there, and sports councils, that want to host those kinds of games.” (link)

The DI Cabinet introduced legislation for the January 2027 cycle to eliminate restrictions on the number of countable coaches across all sports, including strength and conditioning staff in FBS football. The proposed changes would also remove caps on athletically related income and allow institutions to fund travel and entertainment for up to four individuals accompanying a recruit on an official visit. During its October meetings, the cabinet officially adopted Proposal 2026-27 to shift the men's soccer championship to the spring starting in 2027 and passed expedited legislation allowing FBS football programs to designate up to 17 off-campus recruiters. The group also enacted new governance policies requiring at least 50% of student-athlete representatives to be present for any committee to take legislative action. Full report. (link)
The Big Ten is exploring an NFL-style dynamic scheduling model that bases future matchups on the previous season's results, according to Ohio State AD Ross Bjork, who revealed that the conference could implement the results-based system as early as the 2028 season. CBS’ Austin Nivison explains the proposed change aims to balance strength of schedule in an era of heightened parity driven by NIL and the transfer portal, replacing current rotations that rely on obsolete historical records, as Bjork notes: "They looked at historical rotations over the course of everyone's football life [when setting previous schedules]. Indiana was not what Indiana is today when they set the model. Same thing with UCLA." The new format would match struggling programs with more favorable slates while pairing top teams against tougher competition, all while permanently protecting primary rivalries like Michigan-Ohio State. Syracuse AD Bryan Blair visited with JohnWallStreet Founder Corey Leff and Playfly Sports Chairman Michael Schreiber on the Big Business on Campus podcast. Key notes…
➤ "Somewhere between 3% to 4% of our seating in the dome is premium. … We probably need to be approaching, certainly over 10%, but probably closer to 15% to 20%, if you look at a lot of peers around the country. ... Right now we have suites, we have two smaller clubs, but not a whole lot in between. … This market just got the largest investment in the United States from Micron, $100B investment in semiconductor facilities. There’s a waterfall of businesses moving to central New York. ... So how do we not only build a department and be successful now, but skate to where the puck is going? ... I think that premium is part of that opportunity."
➤ Applying business intelligence and objective metrics to roster spending and ROI: "We're putting our institutions under a lot of strain to try to generate the revenue and make the investments that we need. I think we need to have an objective framework to qualify those investments. And so a lot of what we're going to think about from a business intelligence standpoint is knowing that consumer, having the data on hand, pulling it all together in that overall ecosystem. But on the similar pathway, how do we think about that roster that's on the field and those investments we make from a rev share and NIL standpoint and how are we learning from our decisions to make better decisions going forward?" (link)
Drake AD Brian Hardin explains why he opposes the year-round soccer model: “The proposed model will strain our overworked support staff. It will add to our budget challenges due to travel and indoor facility rental. And who is asking for outdoor soccer matches in the Midwest in February?! I ask D1 ADs to join me at Club 241.” (link)
Western Carolina Senior Assoc. AD for Student Success/SWA Ashleigh Simmons discussed her second year on the Women’s Basketball Selection Committee with SoCon Assoc. Commissioner for Brand Strategy and Broadcast Dave Friedman…
➤ Balancing data analytics with subjective evaluations: "Data plays a huge part but it's not the whole thing. ... At the end of the day, I would say the strongest thing a team can do is win. Period. And I understand how hard that is … but I think that's what coaches have the most frustration on and there is no cookie cutter."
➤ Factoring player injuries and absences into tournament resumes: "We can't say, ‘Well, had so-and-so been there, they would have won that game. But we can say that was a loss to … a Quad 2 team that at this point they didn't have their starting point guard or their starting post player. So, it is definitely playing a factor into how we're seeding, how we're talking about teams, where we're ranking them." (link)
Montana State AD Leon Costello sat down with Colter Nuanez on the Big Sky Breakdown. Here are some takeaways…
➤ Prioritizing traditional scholarship support alongside new NIL demands: "Everything that has come about here in the last five, six years has been an education process for all of our people and all of our fans. The scholarship support is still the bedrock of everything that we do. So to get somebody here to pay for the tuition, room board, books, fees, and then obviously being able to live here, be able to perform or whatever, that is everything foundational that we do. And then it's an education process about how we're going to be able to live in the new world and what it's going to take to live in that new world. The one thing I can say is our fans have been very open about all the new possibilities."
➤ Retaining head coaches and supporting assistant coaching staff: "Every time we have a conversation, it's not always about themselves. It's about how can we retain our coaches? It's about how can we do more for our student-athletes? And it's really building a plan with them to help build their program. They all want to be successful. They don't want to be at a place where they feel like they can't accomplish their goals. And it's more than just the HC. The HC is the leader, but we've got such good coaches that want to take care of those to make the program successful. It's really understanding, again, what they need to be successful and working with them to try and make sure we get those things for them.” (link)

Boston College has signed a multiyear extension with security technology company Evolv. (link)
Speaking of Evolv, SBJ’s Bret McCormick notes Northwestern has deployed the company’s frictionless security screening technology at Ryan Field, joining a growing list of collegiate venues adopting the system over the last two years. The recent expansion into college athletics—which now includes Washington, North Carolina, Memphis, Texas Tech, Boston College, BYU, and Nebraska—has helped the company increase its FY26 first-half revenue to $90M, up from $64M during the same period last year. Because college sports lack universal NCAA or conference screening mandates, McCormick notes the company plans to hire a dedicated account manager to navigate the unique sales environment and pursue the sector. Several mid-major hoops programs are adjusting their travel logistics and sleep patterns to participate in the Field of 68 Tip-off Marathon, an eight-game event in Rock Hill, S.C., featuring 24 consecutive hours of basketball. Northern Illinois will shift its players to a 4 a.m. to noon sleep schedule ahead of a 3 a.m. matchup against Grambling State, while Merrimack plans a 7 p.m. bedtime and a 3 a.m. wake-up for a 6 a.m. tipoff against Appalachian State. High Point secured the midnight slot against Liberty—the first DI game played stateside this season—and opted against altering its practice routines for the 90-minute bus trip. High Point HC Flynn Clayman stated he would have rejected the 3 a.m. or 6 a.m. time slots due to his team's at-large aspirations, but adds: "I get why those teams are doing something like that. They’ll be the only game on, and even though it’ll be late, where a lot of Americans will be asleep, just worldwide on YouTube, it’s probably going to be their most watched game of the season unless they make the NCAA Tournament."
