The 2026 State of AI in Sports Report from Teamworks and Front Office Sports reveals a gap: 90% of sports organizations expect their AI usage to grow, yet only 15% can prove measurable ROI today. Based on responses from leading professional teams, leagues, and collegiate athletic departments, the report shows what separates top performers from the rest. Deploying AI department by department yields virtually no return. Organizations with dedicated AI budgets, accountable leadership, and connected athlete records see ROI rates of up to 67%. “The reality is every university has to stop thinking of themselves as an administrative-first program, but more think of themselves as a sports and entertainment conglomerate whose product is college athletics.”

Tim Harris

Le Moyne is officially leaving the NEC to join the Metro Conference for the 2027-28 academic year, per Mid-Major Madness’ Sam Federman, who notes the move keeps the league’s membership steady at 13 schools. Here’s what you need to know…

➤ AD Phil Brown said Le Moyne will earn a full financial share immediately after joining the league. The Metro distributed between $350K and $825K to its members in 2024, the most recent tax documents available.

➤ Brown says finding a new conference home for Le Moyne wasn’t on his “bingo card” when he accepted the job, instead keeping his focus on completing the school’s transition to full Division-I member status. The Metro reportedly reached out in late summer, following Fairfield's departure to the CAA, before extending an official offer in September, citing geographic proximity, shared faith-based identities and a basketball-centric focus as primary drivers.

➤ Brown: "They didn’t really give a strong pitch, per se. It was a very nice slide deck reminding us what schools are involved, and a map that showed me geographically where they fit. And for us, it was just a little self-reflection. The geography: everybody’s pretty close. The Catholic identity: we’ll be the 10th school that’s a Catholic school, and so that resonates and matters to us. … I was happy in the NEC. They were great colleagues. We’re all playing tremendous basketball here in the northeast. The NEC does have to focus on football, and for me, the Metro is a basketball league. Clearly, we’re a basketball-only institution, so it seems like a more natural fit for us." (link, link)

UCLA AD Tim Harris joined ESPN LA's Mason & Ireland Show to discuss navigating the financial landscape in Westwood, transitioning the athletic department into a modern sports enterprise, building fan engagement during football's unbeaten start and more. Key takeaways…

➤ Shifting away from the traditional amateur college athletics model: "College athletics is in this transformative period. How you used to view college athletics as an amateur program is no longer. NIL is a part of our life now. The reality is every university has to stop thinking of themselves as an administrative-first program, but more think of themselves as a sports and entertainment conglomerate whose product is college athletics."

➤ Boosting revenue growth through core sports business practices: "We now took back control of our marks. That's something that a college athletic program should do. That's something that a sports and entertainment company should do. We're in the process of working with the university to have a greater role in running the facilities that are on our campus where our teams play. We think there's an opportunity there to untap some revenue that hasn't been available before. And then it's really just leaning into the blocking and tackling of what I had done in my past life, ticket sales, sponsorships, ancillary revenue, content. That's what hasn't really been taking place across all universities, and so I'm challenging our folks to view us in a different way than we've been viewing ourselves before."

➤ Driving ticket sales and eliminating end zone tarps at the Rose Bowl: "I get asked a lot, ‘tell us your thinking around the students being free.’ And that was very easy for me because to me, a Rose Bowl full of students is what big time college football looks like. And so if we're going to have a big-time college football team at UCLA, we're going to need support. We're going to need support from ticket buyers. We're going to need season ticket support. We're going to need donor support. … It is an imperative that we're rolling those tarps away for [the USC game]." (link)

New Iowa State AD Jared Benko’s five-year contract, which runs through June 30, 2031, will start with a base salary of $900K, per the Des Moines Register’s Eugene Rapay, who notes that figure is on par with former AD/predecessor Jamie Pollard, who signed a 2025 extension that bumped his pay from $875K to $900K. Benko’s salary will increase each year, eventually maxing out at $1.15M in the final year of the contract. Should Benko terminate the deal in the first year, he would owe the university 100% of his remaining base compensation for the remainder of the agreement. If a buyout were activated during the second or third year, that percentage would drop to 75%. In the fourth year, it would fall to 50%, while in the fifth and final year, Benko would be required to pay 100% of the remaining salary. In turn, if Benko were fired without cause, the university would owe him identical percentages of the rest of the remaining base salary on the contract depending on which year the termination happens. Writing for Extra Points, Athletics Admin’s KC Smurthwaite posits that recently approved NCAA legislation allowing FCS programs to start their seasons during Week 0 and play 12 regular-season games annually, coupled with an upcoming early standardized start for FBS schedules beginning in 2027, has temporarily shifted scheduling leverage to FCS ADs. Being permitted to kickoff early has altered how administrators negotiate contracts, position bye weeks, construct home schedules and perhaps most importantly, generate revenue. It has also allowed them to charge six-figure "convenience fees" to adjust game dates. With 2026 FBS-versus-FCS game guarantees averaging $450K, programs are now utilizing the calendar flexibility to generate additional departmental revenue, such as North Alabama securing an extra $100K from North Carolina to move their 2027 matchup to Week 0. North Alabama AD Josh Looney: “When they opened up that opportunity, there was a scramble of schools looking for home-and-home agreements, neutral-site agreements and really moving other games to Week 0, which opened up better bye week scenarios and the ability to play 12 games. We’ve signed three amendments so far. The convenience fee really determines if we have a domino effect moving multiple opponents.” (link)

Texas and the McCombs School of Business are partnering with Google Cloud, Dell Technologies and SHI International to launch Bevo Lab, a 25K-square-foot sports analytics and AI hub in Austin's Innovation Tower. Per CBS Sports’ Brandon Marcello, the facility will utilize custom tools such as Football Scouting Intelligence and AI portal scouting models to streamline game preparation and manage revenue-sharing evaluations across all 21 varsity sports. Key details…

➤ Business of Sports Institute Executive Director Kirk Goldsberry noted early work through Google Public Sector had saved coaches over 15 hours per week in game preparation this season, with Google engineers helping rebuild how reports are produced by digging through what Goldsberry called "haystacks of data." Goldsberry: “They would come in Saturday night or Sunday morning and have their game planning reports ready for big meetings Sunday and Monday. That was a giant pain in the rear end. We were able to streamline some of that."

➤ AD Chris Del Conte expressed confidence that data-driven insights will shift traditional coaching strategies, while elevating performance across collegiate athletics: "It's not the boogeyman. Let's lean into this. Let's lean into analytics. ... [Bevo Lab] will become the global benchmark for innovation in sports AI and data analytics." Goldsberry adds: “The biggest mystery here is why did it take so, so freaking long for this to happen at a university?” (link, link, link)

Per the Committee on Infractions, Ole Miss men’s basketball was found to have committed tampering violations when former AC Wes Flanigan knowingly engaged in 16 impermissible recruiting phone calls and 10 text messages with a known advisor to a student-athlete at another school who was not in the transfer portal. The student-athlete, who subsequently entered into the portal, did not visit the Rebels, did not receive an offer of an athletics scholarship and ultimately transferred to another school. The parties also agreed that HC Chris Beard was automatically responsible for the violations under HC responsibility legislation. He ultimately received no penalties after both parties noted Beard wasn’t personally involved in the violations, wasn’t aware of the impermissible contact and promoted an atmosphere for compliance. The violations were discovered during a broader review of the UM athletics department that stemmed from information garnered through outside legal proceedings, including the failure to disassociate a booster involved in the school’s 2017 infractions case. Level I-mitigated penalties include two years of probation; a $455K fine; a two-year re-disassociation of the booster; a one-year show-cause order and two-game suspension for Flanigan; and various recruiting communication and visit restrictions across 2024-25 and 2025-26. Speaking recently with Axios Media Correspondent Sara Fischer at Axios’ Media Trends Live Summit in New York City, Hearst President/CEO Steven Swartz says there’s no price that would result in Hearst selling its 18% equity stake in ESPN: “It’s a great business. [ESPN Chairman] Jimmy Pitaro is just a phenomenal executive and he has a great team under him. Disney are great partners. The NFL, they’re not only the best brand in sports, they may be the best brand in entertainment. To have them come in as partners, we’re very excited by it. No, no interest in selling.” (link)

The DI Membership Committee is recommending the DI Board of Directors introduce legislation to change the DI reclassification application fee to be “based on six times the amount of the estimated annual average value of direct benefits through distribution and championships made available to Division I members.” Here’s the thesis…

➤ “This recommendation reflects the committee’s conclusion that the current application fee undervalues Division I membership. The increased application fee is based on the fewest number of years that a reclassifying institution needs to move from entering the reclassification process to becoming fully eligible to receive DI revenue distribution. It more accurately reflects the value of Division I membership, retains the legislation’s existing refund provisions, mitigates the dilution of revenue distribution for members of the division and helps position the division to address any championships-related pressures a larger division may face. Further, the increased application fee helps a reclassifying institution demonstrate its financial commitment to Division I’s philosophy, operating principles and student-athlete experience.”

➤ Currently, the DI application fee is $1.96M and is equal to the estimated annual average value of direct benefits. If approved, the change would apply to schools entering the reclassification process in 2027-28. The BoD is set to meet on Tuesday. (link, link, link)

In the latest episode of the College Football Enquirer, hosts Ross Dellenger, Steven Godfrey, and Andy Staples discuss Miami (FL) President Joe Echevarria’s comments about the Canes’ ambitions. Here’s what you need to know…

➤ Godfrey on Echevarria stripping away traditional collegiate pageantry: "You are seeing a leader arguably for the first time at a single institution represent his cause purely as a business. ... That is an analysis of an enterprise. He calls it no modern enterprise. The veil is off. The mask is off. This man is talking about the business future of Miami being restricted, artificially so, from a free market.”

➤ Staples on departing ACC schools potentially forming an independent scheduling alliance: "If Florida State, North Carolina, Clemson, Miami aren't happy with the ACC, if they all went independent together … you've just guaranteed yourself three power conference games a year against teams that are like-minded and like-financed. And you only need 10."

➤ Dellenger on the financial math possibly driving a breakaway super league: "Michigan and Ohio State’s value of that game annually I think is upwards of like $300M or something like that. It’s like one-fifth or one-fourth of the Big Ten TV deal or something like that. So, you can imagine if those two programs (Michigan and Ohio State) said like, 'Eh, we're done with this Big Ten, right? We're going to go over here. We got a game that just from our game will double our Big Ten distribution, right? Like, why are we sharing our game value with Purdue and Indiana and Rutgers?' And so eventually … that's going to happen. And we’re getting closer to that happening.” (link)

Tennessee Tech AD Casey Fox Q&A’d with Southern Conference Assoc. Commissioner for Brand Strategy and Broadcast Dave Friedman about his role as the SoCon representative on the 11-member FCS Championship Selection Committee. Evaluating teams based on current achievements rather than predictive models: "I take it as what people have done to this point of the season really. I look at schedules. I dig into strength-of-schedule. I look at who they’re playing. … I even look into why they’re playing non-DIs. … You don't know what's going to happen … there's a reason we play and not just select based off of a computer." Fox also talked about how Tennessee Tech’s previous playoff exclusion influences his committee evaluations: "Having gone through that personally and really kind of not wanting another school or team to have to do that … that was tough ... I am looking at non-DI games and why you scheduled them. I am looking at FBS games ... I'm absolutely weighing it a little differently in my mind." (link)

Wisconsin balanced its $198M budget for FY26, finishing with a $181.6K surplus bolstered by a $13.3M state debt service appropriation signed by Gov. Tony Evers. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Mark Stewart reports that concerts at Camp Randall Stadium and the Kohl Center generated $12.3M (roughly 2.5 times initial projections), while the Big Ten distributed nearly $4M more than expected after sending three teams to the College Football Playoff. The department also collected an additional $2.3M from licensing, merchandising, and the University Ridge Golf Course, while saving $3M in operating expenses and $1.7M due to the football team missing a bowl game. Those gains effectively absorbed a $22.2M deficit in projected gift funds and a $2.5M shortfall in football ticket sales, along with a $4.5M overage in salaries driven by an expanded football staff and postseason performance bonuses for the school's volleyball and hockey programs. (link)

Michigan State has received a $10M gift commitment from alumnus and longtime supporter Aaron Zeigler. The gift is designated to FOR SPARTA and will be used to support the football program, including improvements at Spartan Stadium. (link)

We offer our best wishes to Southern Football HC/NFL Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk, who revealed this week he has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. From ESPN’s Alex Scarborough: “Faulk said that with medication, he is not experiencing ‘issues’ beyond hand rigidity, which he believes hasn't gotten worse in the year and a half he has been dealing with the disease, and ‘little tremors.’” (link)

The football transfer portal doesn’t open until January, but tampering and contract negotiations have already started behind the scenes, especially for quarterbacks according to On3's Pete Nakos, who notes that top-tier QB portal valuations are projected to land between $4M and $7M, while the going rate for a reliable Power Four backup currently sits around $1M. More…

➤ One anonymous Big 12 GM tells Nakos: "You can’t afford a top high school quarterback every year. And if the guy that you pick out of high school doesn’t pan out or gets injured, you have to go to the portal. That throws everything off, and that costs a f*cking arm and a leg. … It might cost $1M, but golly, it is worth it."

➤ From an SEC GM on the challenge of building QB depth: “It’s hard when you can’t get agreement in the building. The quarterback coach wants to develop the recruits, the head coach wants to show continuity, and the general manager wants to go get the best guys. Just the way they all are.”

➤ From an agent on the benefits of starting at a Group of 6 school rather than sitting at a P4: “It’s the only way to get better. You got to play, man. Thirty starts is a real thing if you think you want to go to the NFL. And then there are other guys who chose to be a backup this year, and now they made enough money that they can go backward and go to a MAC school for $200K and start.” (link)

It’s Personnel…

➤ San Jose State has announced several promotions, including Senior AD for Student Wellness and Leadership Development/SWA Laura Alexander becoming the new Executive Senior Assoc. AD for Football Administration/SWA; Assoc. AD for Development Bryan Goodman’s elevation to Senior Assoc. The three-year agreement that saw six teams split into two pods to play two games round-robin style to determine seeding for the Big 5 Classic men’s basketball tripleheader at Xfinity Mobile Arena is ending after the 2026-27 season, per The Inquirer’s Jeff Neiburg, who notes Villanova wasn’t interested in maintaining the event’s status quo, preferring a different set-up that would have all but guaranteed the Wildcats didn’t have to play another Big 5 road game. The five non-Villanova schools – Drexel, La Salle, Penn, Saint Joseph’s and Temple – wouldn’t agree to such a move and instead have decided to continue the 70-year tradition through a new round-robin scheduling format, beginning in 2027-28. A trial date of April 12 has been set for the lawsuit filed by former UAlbany men's basketball student-athlete Luke Fizulich against HC Dwayne Killings regarding an alleged locker room assault prior to a November 2021 game. While U.S. District Judge David N. Hurd dismissed allegations that the university discriminated against Fizulich by opting not to dismiss Killings, the assault and battery claims remain active for the trial that will be overseen by Judge Mae A. D’Agostino in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York. (link)

Former Fresno State/San Jose State basketball student-athlete Steven Vasquez and former DraftKings sports trader Matthew J. Martin face Class C felony charges related to an alleged prop bet fixing scheme. ESPN's David Purdum reports the pair face up to five years in prison after being charged with “committing a fraudulent act in a gaming establishment and attempting or conspiring to cheat at a gambling game.” Additionally, Purdum notes an arrest warrant remains active for former Fresno State player Mykell Robinson. According to the NCAA and court documents, Robinson deliberately manipulated his performance during a 2025 game against Colorado State—recording just three points in 21 minutes—while Vasquez, Martin, and another former DraftKings employee, Samuel Silverman, placed under bets on his statistics to win a net $15,950.
