“I don’t know if we end up being part of those conversations or not, but I think it’s just as likely as not that we will, because we are something that got a profoundly significant overwhelmingly positive vote in the Senate.”
Charlie Baker
The NCAA President’s confidence in the Protect College Sports Act making its way through the House

NCAA President Charlie Baker believes the Protect College Sports Act still has a strong chance of House action after the midterms despite concerns about the legislation’s passage. Speaking at Puck’s In the Arena conference, Baker stopped short of predicting it would pass in the upcoming lame-duck session, per SBJ’s Ben Fischer, arguing the bill was ripe for serious consideration as part of political horse trading between Senate and House leadership. “There’s a whole bunch of stuff the House has passed that’s sitting in the Senate. There’s a whole bunch of stuff the Senate’s passed that’s sitting in the House ... I don’t know if we end up being part of those conversations or not, but I think it’s just as likely as not that we will, because we are something that got a profoundly significant overwhelmingly positive vote in the Senate.” Asked by Puck’s John Ourand about which parts of the bill he doesn’t support, Baker responded: “When I was governor, I signed hundreds of bills. I never signed a bill that was perfect. There’s always stuff in there you don’t like, OK? That’s called democracy. I think this thing is much better for college sports than not.” (link)
Florida State is evaluating a modern restructuring of its athletic department following the termination of AD Michael Alford, with leadership under President Richard McCullough and Board of Trustees Chair Peter Collins seeking to address structural business challenges, per the Tallahassee Democrat’s Jim Henry. Here are the details…
➤ The proposed model aims to better align functions currently spread across Seminole Boosters, the athletic department, and the university itself, while creating new executive-level roles, including a CRO; a senior executive focused on commercial growth; an AD whose primary responsibilities center on NCAA compliance, conference relations and sport administration; and GM positions to oversee roster construction and recruiting.
➤ The administrative shifts arrive as the university navigates rising costs, escalating NIL obligations and a widening financial gap for the ACC in relation to the SEC and Big Ten. While self-generated athletics revenue led the ACC at $121M in FY25, FSU leadership is focusing on building significant, recurring revenue streams from university and athletic assets like Doak Campbell Stadium, advertising inventory, premium fan experiences and campus partnerships.
➤ Separate from the business overhaul, prevailing sentiment among university insiders is that FSU would prefer to evaluate Football HC Mike Norvell at the end of the year rather than executing a mid-year change. (link)
The Ohio First District Court of Appeals has reversed the judgment of the trial court's preliminary injunction in the Borovicanin v. NCAA five-for-five eligibility case and the Kentucky Court of Appeals has dissolved the injunction allowing class of 2022 student-athletes to compete. Boise State Assoc. Professor Sam Ehrlich: “Notably, the appellate court is not disturbing the [Ohio] trial court's finding that athletes are intended third-party beneficiaries of the NCAA bylaws (though it's not affirmatively saying they are). That's a critical threshold issue, and a key ‘Can this be revisited?’ question for me. … While the opinion is mostly on procedural issues, the [Kentucky] court does joins Ohio from this morning in rejecting the idea that the plain text of the new eligibility rule bylaw allows Class of 2022 athletes eligibility, albeit for somewhat different (though more forceful) reasons.” (link, link, link)
Charlotte AD Kevin White joined the Highway 49 Podcast to discuss the evolving financial landscape and more. Here are some takeaways…
➤ Competing financially within the American and against regional peers: “We have to do what we can to make sure that Charlotte is successful, Charlotte football. We're probably not going to be in the conversation in terms of spending with others in our state that may be in the P4 conferences, and that's okay. We have to do whatever we can in order to be the most successful in the American Conference. And so yeah, Memphis and South Florida are some schools that are really out in front in terms of investing from a football perspective, but every campus is dynamic and we're trying to figure out where we land and where we fit. … We’re going to keep charging.”
➤ Balancing facility investments against direct roster revenue sharing: “The arms race used to be in facilities. And so everybody was trying to build these nice facilities in order to attract recruits. And what we've found over the last couple years is that yeah, the recruits really care about the facilities and that's important. ... But more and more programs probably desire more of a balance that moves more towards revenue share. That's kind of been the thing that's been the most important for us.” (link)

Central Michigan launches Maroon & Gold BOLD Phase II, the next chapter of its Forge the Future athletics fundraising initiative. Following the success of phase one, which surpassed its original $25M philanthropic target by the end of June, athletics is now expanding the venture’s vision by establishing a new goal of $50M. Phase II will focus on garnering donor support for strategic investments, with priorities including a proposed facility envisioned to provide all student-athletes with comprehensive next-level training, nutrition, care and support and the completion of fundraising for the CMU Men's and Women's Golf Practice Facility, a project currently under construction. In addition to facility enhancements, Phase II will rally donor investment for student-athlete excellence initiatives; strengthen operational resources across all programs; expand opportunities for coaches to recruit and retain top talent; and create meaningful experiences that directly support student-athlete success. On3’s Andy Staples writes on the 11% drop in college football viewership thus far and reports: “According to a source with knowledge of Disney’s viewership data, SEC minutes watched are up 41 percent year-over-year for the season’s first month. In more publicly available stats, nine of the 10 most watched games so far this season included an SEC team. Only three of the 10 most watched games included a Big Ten team.” On the B1G: “The league’s insistence on waiting until week three to schedule conference games hurts its ability to put compelling games in every major TV window and leaves it as a disadvantage as other leagues build audience sooner. … The disparity isn’t because all the SEC teams scheduled more grueling non-conference games, either. It’s because the SEC — and the ACC and Big 12, for that matter — also schedule more intelligently than the Big Ten. … This is why commissioner Tony Petitti came on my show last month and said the league would happily comply with a proposed College Football Playoff rule that requires 10 ‘qualifying events’ — conference games plus non-conference games against Power 4 opponents and Notre Dame — should the CFP expand to 24 teams.” (link)
Kansas State is reportedly finalizing a settlement with former Wildcats Men’s Basketball HC Jerome Tang, which will pay him $12M between now and the end of 2027, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel, who adds: “[KSU] attempted to fire Tang for cause last year. He was owed $18.7M.” (link)

San Diego State’s football team continues to deal with a mumps outbreak and projects to be down to just 10 opening-day starters against Texas State, combining both the viral infection and conventional injuries. This marks the third straight week the joint issues have cost them nearly half the team’s starters. ESPN’s Pete Thamel notes the team is still being tested and monitored, so that number could change prior to Saturday’s kickoff. (link)

Puck's John Ourand caught up with SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey yesterday at the In the Arena conference to discuss the future of college athletics. Sankey’s most important comments…
➤ "The notion that you’re going to take like 130 football programs, put them in a negotiating pool, and everybody’s going to make three times the money—I think that’s fiction. I think the notion of a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for combined media rights in this environment is a nice story to tell, but it’s really about control. And so I don’t like that part.”
➤ Would the SEC ever expand to the West Coast? "No. I don’t even have that conversation. We were approached. I’m the one person who didn’t take it away from the Pac-12. If you play any sport in the Southeastern Conference, you have at most a two-hour plane ride from point A to point B. The longest trip prior to expansion was from Columbia, South Carolina, to College Station, Texas. Now it’s from Columbia, South Carolina to Austin, Texas. So we’ve allowed our fans to make trips. We’ve made our scheduling decision around nine games. You know, coaches don’t like that necessarily, but you can point to geographic access. And you watch our fans travel to different places.”
➤ Expanding the College Football Playoff to 24 teams: "There are a lot of ideas, and our concerns relate to how you manage the economics. Is there value in 24 or not? I don’t think people understand the difficulty of going week to week to week to week in December. … We’ve looked at it and said CFP selection decisions are negatively impacting regular-season scheduling, particularly big non-conference games. That needs to be addressed first, and also the economics, what we do with conference championship games, where the games fit, and understanding the impact.” (link)
New Big East Commissioner Tim Brosnan has outlined a business philosophy shift designed to lean into commerce to better monetize the league’s assets, per SBJ’s Mike Mazzeo. “This assignment that I have accepted: it’s not a job for me. It’s a passion. And I want to cap my career knowing that the greatness that is the Big East is secure for years to come. And I believe that the Big East can and will prosper in the years ahead, and that its legacy and traditions will endure far beyond my years.” More key notes…
➤ Among the business opportunities Brosnan is pursuing, the conference has initiated discussions about more co-promotion with TV partners including Fox, Peacock, Turner and ESPN, while pushing sponsors for greater regular-season activation around the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments. Brosnan: “Our focus is on hoops, 24/7/365, there are no days off or distractions from football.”
➤ Additionally, the league is developing a commerce committee to determine how to better integrate and share best practices across member institutions; exploring digital content opportunities, with an eye on its 150K students as potential content creators; offering its "full-throated" support for the passage of the Protect College Sports Act, and re-endorsing NCAA President Charlie Baker’s call to ban prop betting. (link)
➤ Brosnan on the Big East potentially expanding in the coming years: "I think that not this year, but in a couple of years, there will be more opportunity to expand the conference... I don't think that's now, but I think it's coming." (link)
Northwestern AD Mark Jackson joined the Big Business on Campus podcast with JohnWallStreet Founder Corey Leff and Playfly Sports Chairman Michael Schreiber to discuss tonight’s opening of the Ryan Field and more. Here’s what you need to know…
➤ Northwestern's unique competitive advantage: "It is a unique combination of, obviously, academic prestige, competing in the Power Two as a private university. There's really nobody else you know in the top 10 of academic institutions that has that makeup. Then [being] connected to a world-class city like Chicago only adds to the allure. … Although not the biggest alumni network in the world, I would argue in many ways the most influential. When you think about billionaires per cap across the Power Two, we have more than anybody and that's not to be said in an arrogant way. We just have a tremendous amount of success, so we pride ourselves in that we're uniquely Northwestern.”
➤ Generating new revenue through premium offerings and stadium operations: "In the history of Chicago, to start, we've never had a premium product around college football. That’s no slight to our previous stadium, but it was literally falling apart. ... The creation of the LLC itself allowed us to create a dynamic team and we brought in the who's who of college and professional sports to build around that team and allow us to grow revenue in a way that's never been done here before. So, as we start off, yeah, we're 3 or 4x of overall revenue.” (link)
Cal Co-ADs Jenny Simon-O’Neill and Jay Larson appeared on the Tell The Whole Damn World podcast to discuss navigating co-leadership, expanding corporate revenue streams, facility upgrades and more. Here are the main takeaways…
➤ Simon-O'Neill on the operational structure of paired leadership: "When the chancellor [Rich Lyons] was in the private sector, he worked at a company that thought that co-headships were really important to the business model. … So when he appointed us in this role, he was really intentional about the way we were set up so that we could be successful. Right off the bat, he said, ‘it's really important that you set the stage for success and make sure that people aren't able to split you.’ When you’re talking to one of us, you’re talking to both of us."
➤ Simon-O'Neill on capital project milestones across campus facilities: "When we took on this role, we vowed to solve some 20-year problems. ... We're excited about our basketball practice facility. ... [We’re] also excited to have a revamped Hall of Fame that we just opened a couple of weeks ago. And then the team store, that’s one we’ve been thinking and talking about for a really long time.” Larson adds: “A couple that are open soon, beach volleyball, the new facility on the west side of campus, will open up in late October. Softball will open up in the spring in time for the season to start." (link)

➤ ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports Stanford is hiring Dan Grunfeld as its Men’s Basketball GM. “He’s a former captain and All-Pac-10 player for the Cardinal. He comes from private business, where he was a vice president at Lightspeed Venture Partners.” (link)
➤ The NBA has retained Excel Search & Advisory to lead its search for the next WNBA commissioner, SBJ’s Tom Friend reports, adding: “The speculation on external candidates has ranged from the political world (Michelle Obama and Kamala Harris) to the corporate world (Ally Financial’s Andrea Brimmer) to outside sports executives (Renie Anderson, the NFL’s chief revenue officer and executive vice president, and Duke AD Nina King) to former players (Swin Cash and WNBPA President Nneka Ogwumike).” (link)

Western Michigan held its introductory press conference for new AD Alex Gary, who said during his remarks: “Here’s what I believe. Where we are today is not our destination. It is a strong foundation. When you have a strong foundation, you don’t start over. You accelerate. You raise your expectation, you raise your ambition, and you raise your belief in what’s possible. The people are here to do that, and certainly the passion is here to do that. The opportunity is here to do that. Now we just have to put it all together and make sure that every alum, every Bronco, everyone feels that the best days of Bronco athletics are ahead. Because we’ve come too far not to go farther and we’ve done too much not to do more. We are proud of where Western Michigan Athletics is today. And now we need to build what Western Michigan athletics can become. …We’re the best program in the MAC. That’s evidenced by back-to-back-to-back MAC Director’s Cup championships. Now we want to be the best program outside the Power Four." (link, link)
Intersport and the American Volleyball Coaches Association have partnered to launch the creation of AVCA Match Point, dubbed an “elite” two-day women’s volleyball championship event that will take place at Freedom Hall in Louisville from April 10-11, 2027. Nebraska, Louisville, Kentucky, Pittsburgh, Stanford and Wisconsin are on board, with two additional programs to be announced at a later date that round out the eight-team field. (link)
Continuing its positional series, Collegiate Sports Connect has published a new Coach Intel report benchmarking guaranteed compensation for Division I Football running back coaches. The data highlights a robust Power 4 market where elite recruiters and backfield developers command a $425K median salary, with the top quartile pushing past the $600K mark. Notably, the report reveals a massive financial premium for assistants carrying elevated leadership designations; upgrading a running back coach's title to "Assistant" or "Associate Head Coach" correlates to a staggering $250K increase in median pay over the standard title ($650K vs. $400K), with six of the top seven earners holding this distinction. This massive investment at the top creates a pronounced financial separation between conference tiers, as the Power 4 baseline is more than triple that of their Group of 6 counterparts ($127,675) and dwarfs the FCS median of $60K. Take a look at the full report. (link)

Nike stock has fallen 43% this year following its delisting from the S&P 100 as the company prepares to report fiscal Q1 2027 results, according to Sportico's Sara Germano. Wall Street consensus projects $646M in profit on $11.3B in revenue—down from $1.1B in profit on $11.6B in sales during the same period in 2024—amid projected low-to-mid-single-digit revenue declines. The loss of star endorser Kylian Mbappé to On after 20 years coincides with sell-equivalent ratings from J.P. Morgan, Morgan Stanley, and Bank of America, where analyst Lorraine Hutchinson lowered Nike's price target from $47 to $30. Nike CEO Elliott Hill and newly hired CFO Dave Denton will host the company's first investor day in nine years in November to address product pipeline strategies. Meanwhile, Dick's Sporting Goods Chairman Ed Stack attributed the segment slowdown to shifting consumer preferences away from traditional lifestyle sneakers that “simply aren’t resonating the way they once did.” (link)
