The 2026 State of AI in Sports Report from Teamworks and Front Office Sports reveals a gap: 90% of sports organizations expect their AI usage to grow, yet only 15% can prove measurable ROI today.
Based on responses from leading professional teams, leagues, and collegiate athletic departments, the report shows what separates top performers from the rest. Deploying AI department by department yields virtually no return. Organizations with dedicated AI budgets, accountable leadership, and connected athlete records see ROI rates of up to 67%.

“I’ve said many times that the second worst thing would have been not getting into the Pac-12. The worst thing would be getting in and not winning and competing.”
Kelly Damphousse

Iowa State hires Auburn Executive Deputy AD Jared Benko as its next AD, starting October 30. President David Cook: “Athletics is vital to the strength of our university. Jared Benko brings the leadership experience and strategic vision to build on our success, support our student-athletes as students first and ensure Iowa State is well positioned for the future of college athletics.” ESPN’s Pete Thamel first reported the hire. Parker Executive Search assisted with the process. (link)
The NCAA has filed a federal lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio against Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, seeking to overturn his executive order directing in-state universities to permit Class of 2022 student-athletes a fifth season of eligibility. Writing for On3, Ross Dellenger notes the 41-page complaint, believed to be the first time the NCAA has sued a sitting governor in more than 100 years of the association’s history, attacks DeWine's order as a "misguided attempt" to give Ohio universities an "unfair, unprecedented and unwarranted competitive advantage in stadiums and arenas throughout the country.” More…
➤ The suit accuses DeWine of violating the Commerce Clause, First Amendment and 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution; of exceeding his authority under state law, by failing to identify any statutory or constitutional source of legal authority for his order; and depicts him as unlawfully interfering with eligibility rules that member schools, including those in Ohio, have contractually agreed to follow. The suit requests a judge declare the executive order as violating the Constitution, rule that it has no "force of law" and prohibit the governor under federal and state law from any order enforcement.
➤ Represented by Wilkinson Stekloff lead counsel Rakesh Kilaru, the NCAA maintains the executive order threatens fair competition across Division I. From the NCAA’s complaint: "Using state law to undermine fair national competition threatens the viability of college sports and the basic lesson all athletes learn early in their careers — to play by the rules."
➤ Sportico’s Michael McCann posits DeWine will likely invoke several lines of defense. He “might assert that until an Ohio school relies on the executive order and puts an ineligible player on the roster, the dispute remains too contingent to be ripe for judicial review. A related defense would be that the NCAA lacks standing, because it hasn’t been directly harmed by the executive order and won’t be unless an Ohio school relies on it. … Another possible defense is sovereign immunity, which generally protects states and state officials sued in their official capacities. … Other possible defenses include an argument that allowing Ohio athletes to play doesn’t unduly burden interstate commerce or other states’ economies, and that the First Amendment shouldn’t apply because the executive order doesn’t compel the NCAA to engage or not engage in speech. DeWine might also cite powers as governor to justify the executive order.” (link, link)
➤ NCAA President Charlie Baker on today’s filing: “Governors are expected to turn square corners and act within their authority. The Executive Order is unlawful because Governor DeWine lacks the authority to permit Ohio colleges and universities to disregard the rules they have agreed to follow by rostering ineligible student-athletes. If state courts – or governors – can unilaterally change the rules to give certain schools competitive advantages, it will become impossible for all schools to compete on a level playing field. … [On the Borovicanin case] We look forward to answering the Ohio Supreme Court’s questions on Monday, as ordered. In the meantime, the NCAA does not believe the Ohio Supreme Court declared the Borovicanin plaintiffs immediately eligible to compete. … [The court] stayed the mandate but did not reinstate the injunction. The injunction therefore remains stayed. Schools that read the order differently bear the risk of that interpretation.” (link)
The Sun Belt adopted new exit fees this week, increasing the exit amount from $5M to a range from $8-18M that is determined through the notification date of departure. Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger adds: “A 27-month or more notice is an $8M fee and it escalates from there. The impending increase in Sun Belt exit fees expedited a move from James Madison to agree to join the American. While JMU is planning to begin play in July 2028, there is a belief that a financial settlement with the Sun Belt can be struck for the Dukes to start play in July 2027.” (link)
More from Extra Points’ Matt Brown on the EA Sports College Football franchise’s future viability. EA’s licensing agreement with CLC and various schools was for four titles, produced annually, with Brown noting the company is committed to producing and releasing one more game next year. “EA is not only interested in renewing that agreement, but is also in active negotiations to do so. … These licensing agreements are typically about four years in length. Barring something dramatically unforeseen happening, I believe it is reasonable to assume the game will continue until at least 2032." If the game does go away or fails to perform financially, Brown believes licensing costs won’t be the reason. “I understand why some at EA would be nervous, especially since sales of the game have declined over the last three years and individual athlete payments jumped from $600 to $1,500 from Year 1 to Year 2. But this is still the most publisher-friendly licensing deal. EA has to pay more money to players and teams for every other game it produces! The lack of a union or players association to formally bargain on behalf of the athletes drives those total costs down, compared to what the MLBPA, NFLPA and others would demand.” (link)
JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher highlights what he refers to as the “sleeping giant” of Texas State in the most recent entry of his series on the new-era Pac-12 schools. Located in San Marcos, 33 miles from Austin, TXST has “47K students, ambitious leadership, good recruiting geography, motivated donors, and a football program that wants to punch above its weight.” When the Pac-12 was searching for a complement of eight football-playing members to become NCAA compliant, it zeroed in on Texas State, managing to lock down the Bobcats in front of last summer’s July 1 deadline. Canzano adds: “Texas State will get more revenue and far more TV exposure in the Pac-12 than it got previously. The school’s men’s basketball team had zero nationally televised games last season, for example. It will have 18 such games this season in the Pac-12.” The challenge, according to Texas State President Kelly Damphousse, is parlaying that quickly and efficiently into success in the standings. “I’ve said many times that the second worst thing would have been not getting into the Pac-12. The worst thing would be getting in and not winning and competing." (link)
Coastal Carolina AD Chance Miller on his football squad’s 1990s-style jerseys for tonight’s nationally televised matchup against Appalachian State: "There’s so many people that are relocating from other places in the Northeast and the Midwest that might not have had that traditional college football fandom. And we’re trying to get them to come to the games, buy tickets, and really adopt us. This is one of those ways that we can do it." (link)
Fairfield has released its 2025-26 annual report, highlighting an all-time record fundraising total of $4.437M over the past year to support its student-athletes from 4,073 total gifts. That mark included a record $4.2M in operational support. In addition, for the first time in the department’s history, it achieved two $1M fundraising days, surpassing that plateau on both STAGiving Day [1,466 donors] and Giving Tuesday [849 donors]. Dropback has partnered with Hudl to integrate advanced athletic and statistical data into its college roster management and player valuation models, per SBJ’s Joe Lemire, who notes the move joins prior data inputs from PFF, SkillCorner, Synergy and Sports Info Solutions. Dropback CEO Luke Bogus: “That was the vision: these folks who were coaches forever are now asked to run a multimillion-dollar business, so how do we give them the same business tools that any other CEO or CFO would have? We are not making AI decide what players are worth ourselves, and we don’t have some proprietary algorithm. We are trying to give teams tools to build their own process of creating their own valuation models and their own way of assessing talent. Everyone talks about the moving market, but our opinion is that if you have more diligence behind why we’re coming up with the valuation of the player in the first place, then maybe we can control the market more than if we don’t have any rigor.” Dropback currently serves over 30 collegiate clients across football, men’s basketball and volleyball, including Georgia, Kentucky, Butler and Michigan State. lowa State officials met with AD candidates on Thursday as part of the final round of interviews, per CollegeAD, which reports: “The in-person meetings took place in Chicago. The final interviews come nearly a week after lowa State completed its virtual round last Thursday and Friday. It's our understanding that the final pool included at least one sitting athletic director and at least one senior executive from a Power Four program. Sources believe lowa State could make a decision in the coming days.” (link)
The College Football Playoff issued the following statement concerning discussions about a 24-team format: “Constructive discussions with ESPN continued this week. We have enjoyed a strong partnership with ESPN since our inception and are appreciative of the productive dialogue we have had throughout the negotiating period and continuing over the last several days. We will provide additional updates on the matters of future format and media rights when appropriate.” (link)
James Madison AD Matt Roan on whether the Dukes could make the move to the American prior to the July 1, 2028, target date: “I will say never. I think it’s a possibility … and if it’s beneficial to the Sun Belt and the American I think we’d be open to that possibility.” Roan adds that conversations with donors about covering the higher exit fee if JMU does leave early are “not very advanced, but I think we could quickly pivot to get there.” (link)
Ivy League Commissioner Robin Harris joined The Field of 68 podcast to discuss the league’s unique athletic model, moving the annual “Ivy Madness” men’s and women’s basketball tournaments to the PPL Center in Allentown, Pa., and more. Here are some takeaways…
➤ NCAA Tournament expansion and league impact: "I was squarely on the fence because I could see both the positives for the Ivy League and I could see the potential negatives. ... For example, with the women, we pretty regularly now are placing multiple teams in the tournament and so obviously expansion continues to help that. And I continue to believe on the men's side that there will be a day where we will be able to have that second team."
➤ Moving the "Ivy Madness" men's and women's basketball tournaments to the PPL Center starting in 2028: "We have been looking throughout the past 10 years for neutral sites that are also cost-effective because we candidly don't generate net revenue on our tournaments. They're about the student-athlete experience. ... It’s how we operate, but we also have to be fiscally prudent. Even though we looked at major venues, they just didn’t work economically. And so, as we continued to explore options, PPL Center became a really exciting option. ... The enhancements to the arena are truly incredible and it’s right-sized. … By engaging in a three-year deal, it gives us the chance to anchor the tournament and to grow it." (link)
In a Q&A with Inside Lacrosse’s Matt Kinnear, SMU AD Damon Evans talked about the decision to launch a DI men’s lacrosse program…
➤ "There’s a big lacrosse base out here in the Texas community. When you look at lacrosse, we want to leverage the growth of the sport in Texas, the 3,200 high school athletes competing across nearly 160 varsity or junior varsity teams statewide. That is very, very significant."
➤ On leveraging the transfer portal and eligibility rules to fast-track program assembly: "We saw this as a unique opportunity with the five years of eligibility rule that came into play. We believe it's a unique opportunity to stand up a program and really make some noise.”
➤ Is it fair to say the influx of Ivy League transfers accelerated the timeline? “That's very fair to say. You’ve got to take advantage of the moment, and we want to take advantage of the moment. Obviously, the portal is going to play big for us as we move forward. I know from everything I hear there’s an elite group of individuals coming out of the Ivies. I'm sure that a lot of the other programs across the country are going to be going after them. So we're looking at the opportunity to attract talented student-athletes who want to help us establish this program. They will be the foundation. They will be the pillars that stand this program up.” (link)
Surging roster costs and massive buyouts are reshaping college football coaching carousel decisions, per Fox Sports’ Ben Portnoy, who notes such factors are forcing athletic departments “to make a new-look cost analysis: Is it better to spend $100M to fire our coach and bring in a new staff? Or, is it better to put another $15M into the roster and see what happens?” Here’s the gist…
➤ An anonymous industry source: “The rev-share piece is definitely coming into play. That's a factor now when you fire your coach because not only do you’ve got to pay out the coach — you may have to pay a buyout — then you may have to pay this roster off, and then you’ve got to have enough money to go get a new roster."
➤ Wisconsin serves as a key example, with the team off to a 4-1 start this year after the university restructured its NIL operations to better support HC Luke Fickell. Another anonymous industry source adds: “It's like, OK, well, is this new coach that we're going to hire that much better than what we had previously? Or if we invest more in the guy that at one point we thought was the perfect fit, is that a better math solution than starting all over and investing more?" (link)

UCLA is in the process of assuming control of Pauley Pavilion, Drake Stadium, and the Wallis Annenberg Soccer Stadium from the university's recreation department, according to On3's Tracy Pierson. Doing so will allow the athletic department to retain revenue from its own sporting events and eliminate facility usage fees previously paid by the basketball program. Pierson: “A timeframe for when the transition would be completed was not provided. UCLA athletics obtaining control of its on-campus venues should generate millions in revenue. It also makes it possible for the athletic department to generate income from other events conducted in the venues, like concerts or rallies.” (link)
One-third of Arkansas baseball suites at Baum-Walker Stadium will turn over following a new reseating plan that raised minimum donor thresholds to $40K annually and added a 20K priority points requirement, according to Whole Hog Sports' Matt Jones. The overhaul generated $8.8M in new pledges within three weeks—including $5.75M in positioning gifts—as 12 of the stadium's 36 suites opened up for a waiting list of 42 high-level accounts. Chair-back season ticket holders also faced donation increases from $250 to a minimum of $500 per year, with 80 of 127 impacted accounts agreeing to the higher rate to help fund rising costs across the athletic department. The NBA and WNBA are partnering with the National Council on Problem Gambling to launch a comprehensive responsible gaming initiative this fall addressing the risks associated with both traditional sportsbooks and emerging prediction markets. The cross-platform campaign will run across social and linear channels, emphasizing that wagering should remain an entertainment vehicle rather than an income generator. NBA Head of Media Distribution and Partnerships Scott Kaufman-Ross: "As the ways people engage with sports continue to evolve, it is important that fans understand the risks associated with putting money on sports outcomes. [We] want to help fans make informed decisions, understand the risk and, if they choose to bet, trade or anything similar, that they do so responsibly." (link)
