The 2026 State of AI in Sports Report from Teamworks and Front Office Sports reveals a gap: 90% of sports organizations expect their AI usage to grow, yet only 15% can prove measurable ROI today. Based on responses from leading professional teams, leagues, and collegiate athletic departments, the report shows what separates top performers from the rest. Deploying AI department by department yields virtually no return. Organizations with dedicated AI budgets, accountable leadership, and connected athlete records see ROI rates of up to 67%. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit has reversed and vacated the nationwide preliminary injunction in the five-for-five eligibility case, Wisne v. NCAA, per Scarlet and Black Insider’s Austin Massey. “The injunction had already been stayed since August 21, and following oral arguments that appeared to go poorly for the plaintiffs, this outcome was largely expected. The three-judge panel concluded that the plaintiffs failed to establish a legally supportable antitrust labor market encompassing all Division I sports. Importantly, the court did NOT decide whether the NCAA's exclusion of the Class of 2022 is ultimately lawful, nor did it address whether NCAA eligibility rules are exempt from antitrust scrutiny.” (link, link - full ruling)
NCAA Chief Legal Officer Scott Bearby’s response to the ruling, in part: “The Tenth Circuit's decision is consistent with the approach taken by every federal court of appeals to consider the merits of preliminary injunctions involving NCAA eligibility rules. The decision also acknowledges the NCAA's concern that retroactively changing eligibility rules can destabilize rosters and disrupt the settled expectations of student-athletes regarding roster spots and playing time. … The NCAA will continue to defend the membership's decision and the rules adopted through the Association's governance process. Although plaintiffs may seek additional review and certain proceedings remain pending before the district court, today's decision vacates the injunction in full and represents another appellate court's recognition that the extraordinary remedy of injunctive relief was unwarranted.” (link)
The College Football Playoff says the formal agreement with ESPN regarding expansion is “in the final stages of review.” (link)
The SEC is considering imposing a luxury tax on member schools that exceed the revenue-sharing cap of about $22.2M for 2027-28. Per ESPN’s Mark Schlabach and Pete Thamel, a working group of ADs, university presidents and general counsels is weighing a graduated penalty formula, such as 1% on the first $1M spent over the cap and 3% on $3M, with hopes of approving the mechanism before the early football signing period from December 2-4. League officials haven’t decided how to use potential collected funds, including possible payment to the College Sports Commission enforcement or or post-graduate student-athlete medical funds, and aren’t considering a method similar to Major League Baseball's Competitive Balance Tax, which funnels some of the taxes collected from big spenders back to teams from small markets with lower revenue. A source tells ESPN: “It's a lot better if we all know what everybody's doing right now. We're living in this world where we have no idea what anybody's spending. Agents can play you all day long because there is no general database. We're starting to get some information, but there's not enough transparency to know what people are really doing." (link)
The Protect College Sports Act won’t be on the House’s agenda when it returns to session next week, per Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, who notes the move was expected. (link); The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel, Ralph Russo and Justin Williams get more comments from key individuals about the legislation…
➤ NCAA SVP of External Affairs Tim Buckley: “Student-athletes from across the country and all three NCAA Divisions worked hard to advance this legislation and thanks to their advocacy, the bill received a massive, bipartisan vote in the Senate. Not acting on the Protect College Sports Act this session would mean not enshrining these transformative student-athlete benefits into federal law, and we will continue to see opportunities for young people to access college sports erode as professionals return to college and steal roster spots from college students. The Association looks forward to working with the House to get this bill across the finish line.”
➤ A Senate Committee on Commerce spokesperson adds: “There is no realistic path to secure the same broad bipartisan support for a new bill in 2027 and beyond. Passing the Senate-approved bipartisan bill through the House and sending it to the President’s desk during the lame duck Congress gives House Republicans an opportunity to close out the 119th Congress with a significant win for President Trump, HBCUs, women’s sports, and student athletes. An attempt to amend it would be a surefire defeat for the colleges and fans counting on PCSA’s enactment.” (link)
Tarleton State President James Hurley knew that if there was one surefire way to boost the school’s profile, it was college sports and the Texans, per The Wall Street Journal’s Andrew Beaton. “Athletics will never be the most important endeavor we embark upon, but it is the most visible.” Tarleton State has seen its enrollment more than double to over 28K students since Hurley took office in 2019, with the athletic rise from DII to DI serving as a core driver for institutional growth. As the enrollment has surged, the university has directed $1.5B toward campus construction, including the new $130M EECU Center, aided by Texas’s $45.9B Permanent University Fund (PUF). To Hurley, it’s all going according to plan, and while PUF money can’t be used on athletics, the influx of capital allows him to rethink his own budget and splurge more than he might otherwise on sports. “We would like to be considered an athletic program that’s great, not good, but great in every sport. We’re competing for championships.” (link)
Texas Tech has released contract terms for its 15-year, $74.3M naming rights agreement with Galaxy, after a ruling by the Texas Attorney General’s Office. Per The Daily Toreador’s Austin Jackson, the deal, which includes multiple provisions for the brand to be displayed during Tech football, men’s basketball and women's basketball games, is set to pay the athletic department $4M for the 2026-27 school year, with 3% annual escalations up to a $6.05M sponsorship fee in 2040-41. Headlining the agreement are naming rights for TTU’s football stadium, along with title sponsorship of the West Stadium Club, extensive digital signage, radio spots and category exclusivity across AI infrastructure, data centers, and cryptocurrency exchanges. Additionally, multimedia rights holder Learfield can activate NIL opportunities to amplify the partnership, with Galaxy holding the option to pay $100K annually to fund student-athlete marketing deals as part of what AD Kirby Hocutt previously termed "above the cap dollars" to supplement revenue-sharing limits. Also included in the contract are multiple hospitality items that athletics must provide to Galaxy, including tickets, parking passes and suite access. (link)
CBS Sports’ Richard Johnson examines the financial calculus behind small-school coaching buyouts that often ventures well beyond the initial cost. For example, the buyout for Sam Houston Football HC Phil Longo is roughly $1.53M in base salary through 2028 and $50K in supplemental income, but a dollar-for-dollar mitigation offset clause allows the department to reduce payouts by the amount of any future coaching salary. More…
➤ If you're thinking the offset seems easy to get around, think again, per Johnson. One industry source said to consider the school as the bank. “You need to be nice to the bank so you can withdraw money out right over the course of your contract. Schools have gotten really sharp lately by introducing language that doesn't allow you to game the offset." An anonymous industry source adds: "[Group of Six schools] are gonna nickel and dime you on everything, and they're gonna want to get the contracts from the new place and cross their Ts and dot their Is. We've never really ran into the issue of like, oh, like you're not making enough. We're not going to pay you until you adjust your contract. But that is language in most of these offset/mitigation contracts themselves."
➤ Athletic Admin COO/Consultant KC Smuthwaite says one of the first things he advises schools to look at is ticket data to help determine if making a coaching change is the right thing to do. “There's some Group of Six schools that expect to get $300K to $500K at least in single game ticket purchases every week. ... You have fan apathy. The fan base hates the coach. They hate what's going on with the program. They're not showing up. And all of a sudden you have three or four even home games still to go, you're all of a sudden looking at $500K- $600K that you could have historically gotten, or even half that if you just had half those individuals show up.” Further: “Can we actually just make that money back with the opportunity cost to hey, we're actually losing more money by being patient, and we're going to make a change." Michigan State has received a $10M commitment from alums John and Becky Duffey toward FOR SPARTA, the $1B initiative focused on elevating facilities, enhancing the student-athlete experience and strengthening opportunities across athletics. SMU has received a $5M gift to the Student-Athlete Benefit Fund from alums Matt and Candee Fleeger and the Fleeger Family Foundation that contains a significant NIL component and will provide resources to help Mustang student-athletes thrive academically, athletically and personally. In recognition of the philanthropy, the football locker room at Gerald J. Ford Stadium will be renamed as the "Fleeger Family Locker Room.” (link)
Oklahoma has received a $1.125M philanthropic commitment from the Enos family of Fort Worth, Texas, to fund upgrades to the Sooner women’s soccer program's locker room and other team areas, while also supporting the Soccer Championship Fund to benefit recruiting and development. The NCAA joined the Bad Actor Program to combat a surge in online abuse directed at college athletes by sports bettors, and Sportico's Michael McCann explains the initiative—established by IC360 and Signify Group—monitors threatening social media behavior and shares investigative data with sportsbooks like Fanatics to ban offending users. The harassment faced by student-athletes intersects with broader campus trends, as a 2023 commissioned study found 67% of on-campus college students engaged in sports betting. President Charlie Baker affirmed the association's intent to utilize the new monitoring partnership to curb the escalating digital hostility: “We are committed to working with stakeholders across the sports betting ecosystem to eradicate this horrific behavior that plagues sports far too often.” (link)
Oklahoma State AD Chad Weiberg says he was “caught off guard a little bit” regarding Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark's decision to step down, adding: “I wouldn’t say surprised because nothing surprises me anymore.” Weiberg expects the Big 12 Board of Directors to move quickly in finding a replacement capable of navigating expanding playoff fields, revenue sharing, and the legislative uncertainty surrounding the Protect College Sports Act. Weiberg also notes: "We’ve got another round of media rights coming up, which is going to be critically important to position the conference the best we can. I think the key is trying to close the gap with the Big Ten and SEC as much as possible. However that happens or needs to look like." (link)
Parker Executive Search has begun reaching out to potential UAB AD candidates to gauge interest, according to CollegeAD, which adds: “This comes roughly one month after we first reported that the Blazers had hired Parker to help lead the department's search for a replacement for Mark Ingram, who had a mutual parting of the ways with the school back in August. For those interested in the opportunity, materials are due to Parker Executive by November 13.” (link) Want to lead the Blazers? Arctos Managing Partner Ian Charles, Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark, and SMU AD Damon Evans addressed the integration of private equity into college athletics during a panel at the Dallas Citizens Council's annual meeting. While Charles strongly criticized institutional investment in the collegiate model, Evans acknowledged holding preliminary conversations with private equity groups to explore new commercial avenues, and Yormark highlighted his conference's recent partnership with RedBird Capital as an alternative to traditional debt or equity frameworks. More key takeaways…
➤ Charles on the true cost of accepting private equity: "In collegiate athletics, it is a disaster scenario. It is not a safety net. It is the most sophisticated form of capital in the most evolved capital market in the world. It doesn’t do it to be kind; it doesn’t do it for your community or your alumni base. It does it to compound a rate of return of at least 15 to 17%, unless you give it a guaranteed return."
➤ Evans on the urgency to modernize athletic department revenue generation: "We’re going to have to become better at commercialization as we move forward. We’re going to have to become better at being able to generate revenue and not rely on other people to do it for us. PE could be a safety net for some. It might be right for others, but what I see happening is we rush to do something and really don’t understand what we’re trying to accomplish."
➤ Yormark on exploring capital partnerships outside of traditional models: "When I first got here... we looked at debt; we looked at traditional private equity. We went in a bit of a different direction. We’re the first conference to tap into a third-party resource. We did a deal with RedBird Capital, but we were looking for something a bit more bespoke." More from GOAL’s Tom Hindle on the coalition of Division I institutions that is expected to meet the 241-vote threshold required to overturn the recently approved two-semester men's college soccer model before Friday's deadline…
➤ Because voting rules allow schools without men's soccer programs to participate in the rescission period, over 80 non-sponsoring institutions joined the opposition, citing potential workload strains on sports information directors and fears of setting a precedent for other sports.
➤ Hindle also points out that he was told “a crucial surprise ‘no’ vote from an ACC Athletic Director in an October meeting, without the knowledge of his MSOC head coach, dragged out the process. The committee was shocked. Had that AD voted ‘yes,’ the proposal would have been automatically implemented.” (link)
➤ Sports Illustrated’s Bryan Fischer reports that no vote “came from Pitt's Allen Greene. Big 12 also entirely abstained from voting for the proposal, causing it to come up short in the first DI Cabinet vote and entering the rescission process.” (link)
Utah State AD Cameron Walker joined the KSL Sports Zone to cover a number of topics. Key comments from Walker…
➤ On the likelihood of Congress passing the PCSA during the lame-duck session: "I think historically if you look at them, especially when you know that it's going to transition to a different party … they're just notorious for not getting anything done. Because it's hard because nobody really wants to bargain until they're in power. ... You hold out hope because you would like to think that college sports is a nonparty issue. But it certainly complicates it."
➤ Daily demand for capital generation: "It’s probably an area I need to spend more time in. Let’s put it this way: the revenue side would eat up every minute of every day that I can give it. And so there's not a shortage and we need to be fundraising more. Sponsorship, any sort of those revenue-generating things, we need to spend more time towards those than I currently even am. And I'm already spending an inordinate amount of time on them." (link)

The two end wall displays, both measuring 11-feet high-by-14-feet wide, supplement the centerhung and extend visual coverage throughout the venue. D1 job postings were up 11% through October, but the growth isn’t spread evenly across platforms, according to new data from College.town and CollegeSports.jobs. D1 listings on CollegeSports.jobs climbed 23% year over year to 2,349, while postings on the NCAA Market fell 8% to 1,650, leaving CollegeSports.jobs with 699 more D1 openings than its legacy counterpart. The result is a market that looks very different than it did three years ago: CollegeSports.jobs now carries roughly seven of every 10 D1 job postings, up from 42% in 2023, while the NCAA Market’s share has slid from 83% to 49%. Former Akron Women’s Soccer HC Jennifer Simonetti filed a Title IX lawsuit against the university demanding a jury trial, back pay, and compensatory damages following her May 2025 dismissal, according to Signal Akron's Carissa Woytach. The filing alleges the athletic department dismissed her less than a month after she reported gender-based discrimination and cites unequal marketing opportunities, restricted recruiting, and fewer support staff compared to the men's programs. The complaint also claims former Zips AD Charles Guthrie issued contradictory in-game instructions and accuses the men's soccer coach of berating her in a "profanity-laced tirade" over facility usage. Akron originally placed Simonetti on paid administrative leave in February 2025 following anonymous complaints regarding her alleged dismissal of athlete injuries and pressuring hurt players to compete.
