MIT AD/Head of DAPER G. Anthony Grant sat down with College.town’s Anthony Grassi at the 2026 NACDA Convention to discuss DIII and how athletics is approaching budget challenges. Here are some of his most notable comments…

For DIII, Grant emphasizes that, while the conversations around topics trickling down from DI are important, the division cannot lose its focus. “Division III has a very clear and unique value proposition in terms of being a division that allows for the growth and development of student-athletes through a co-curricular experience. That's what we stand on and that's what we should lean into even more. But at the same time, understand the financial pressures that are happening across higher education, understanding the changing landscape in college athletics. And it's hard not to factor that in, but we have to figure out a way that we can utilize some of these challenges and uncertainties and to put ourselves in an even stronger position as a division with one, the core focus continuing to be on student-athlete development, understanding what our north star is as a division. Then two, figuring out the appropriate ways to adapt. Are there different ways that we need to generate revenue as a division? Do we need to look at travel and championships a little different and things of that nature?”

How is athletics adjusting with the institute’s budget challenges? “We really have to come back to really being strategic about what are the things that we need to invest in that's really going to enhance the student-athlete experience, put our coaches and staff in a position to be successful and that's consistent with our core values. Anything outside of that, we don't really have the space for the nice-to-haves. That's not where it is. And even with the needs, we have to prioritize and say, ‘What can we do now? Maybe what we can look to do later? And maybe the last thing is I acknowledge that we need it, but we're going to have to figure out a different way to get it right now in this environment.’”

Those external budget pressures have changed the nature of the conversations he is having with donors. “A good amount of it was for wants and enhancements. Now, it's to make sure that the foundation for what we do is where it needs to be for our student-athletes to have the experience that they need to have. The conversations that I have with them is that one, to acknowledge the financial pressures that we have, also understanding that we are in a better situation than most, but at the same time, we have to prioritize and we're not able to do everything that we want and need to do. So in order to do that, we need your support. I'm adamant in the fact that we're here to provide a high level student-athlete experience. I said in the beginning, it needs to be in line with the academic experience that they're getting throughout other parts of the campus.” (link)

The NCAA will publish NPI up to two or three weeks earlier than previously and increase the frequency of publication, with a majority of sports publishing twice a week leading into daily updates in the two weeks prior to selections. The NCAA will also add “What-if scenarios for staff/committees to assist with selections and bracketing preparation.” Looking ahead, the association will look to continue working with Tim Danehy, the architect of NPI, and his site NCAAnpi.net that could include live updates. Men’s and women’s tennis are set to begin with NPI this year as other sports explore the application of the selection metric. (link)

Republican leaders have announced that the final two weeks of the pre-mid-term election House session have been cancelled, with members set to depart Washington no later than September 17 and not return until mid-November. Per Politico’s Meredith Lee Hill, Mia McCarthy and Riley Rogerson, the move will severely curtail what had been a full September legislative calendar. “Leaders would recall House members for those canceled weeks if the Senate moves forward with a party-line budget reconciliation package in the meantime, GOP leaders indicated, though that is not anticipated. The decision comes as candidates agitate to get back on the campaign trail and as GOP leaders continue to struggle to maintain control of the House floor.” (link)

The DIII Committee on Infractions has found that Loras awarded close to $215K in financial aid paid for by a donor to four Columbian baseball student-athletes during 2024-25 and 2025-26. The student-athletes received 97% of their cost of attendance covered through a $28K international student award and another $24K in a private award that was funded by a donor who knew the four student-athletes through his work with a “youth baseball charitable organization.” The funds were then facilitated through a new private award created with the help of the former president and former VP of advancement. Penalties include two years probation, a $2,500 fine, public reprimand and comprehensive compliance education. (link)

The DIII Committee on Infractions also found that Whittier provided impremissible financial aid to 11 Swedish men’s and women’s soccer student-athletes “a pattern clearly distinguishable from the financial aid patterns for all students at the institution.” The committee found that the college’s enrollment office, in an effort to boost enrollment, encouraged its recruitment team to recruit Swedish students to take advantage of a roughly $23K award from the Swedish government. That $23K combined with the $47K in financial aid offered by the institution equated to the full cost of attendance and “no other student or student-athlete at Whittier received close or equivalent to full cost of attendance.” Penalties include one year probation, a $2,500 fine and educational training. Hiram has pulled more than $47M from its $56M endowment fund and is currently eliminating eight academic majors to stabilize its budget, as it works to close budget shortfalls. Former Hiram President David Haney cautioned that administrators must focus on cutting expenses rather than utilizing restricted donor capital to bridge enrollment gaps: "What a lot of these small colleges do is they think that things are going to turn around. 'If we just invest in new athletic facilities, everything is going to be fine.' In most cases, that doesn’t happen. To me, that’s why borrowing from the endowment and taking out debt is not the way to go about it." More from Bloomberg’s Amanda Albright and Elizabeth Rembert. (link)

The average diesel price in the U.S. reached an all-time high of $5.85 per gallon on Friday, driven by Middle East supply disruptions and the ongoing conflict with Iran that has bottlenecked shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and pushed Brent crude above $95 a barrel. Per the AP’s Wyatte Grantham-Philips, the record fuel cost is rippling across the economy by raising freight and transportation expenses for everyday consumer goods, with shipping surcharges already added by companies such as Amazon, FedEx, UPS and the USPS, and grocery aisle prices rising for perishable foods, produce and meat. Diesel is now up close to 56% from its pre-war price of $3.76. Michigan State Professor David Ortega: "Early on, much of the cost increase gets absorbed along the supply chain through existing freight contracts and retailer margins. But as contracts reprice and fuel surcharges take hold, more of that cost makes its way to the grocery store." For those that don’t drive a diesel vehicle, AAA reports the national gas price average has surged to $4.14 per gallon, surpassing the previous holiday record of $3.82 established back in 2012.
