Paramount has reportedly reached a settlement with a coalition of state attorneys general to clear the final regulatory hurdle for its $81B merger with Warner Bros. Discovery, per The Wall Street Journal’s Jessica Toonkel and Paul Kiernan. The agreement would resolve the antitrust lawsuit led by California Attorney General Rob Bonta and 11 other states, avoiding a trial and sparing the media company from paying Warner shareholders roughly $650M quarterly in "ticking fees" if the transaction failed to close by Oct. 1. Under Paramount CEO David Ellison, the combined media conglomerate will unite live sports broadcasting channels, primary streaming services Paramount+ and HBO Max, broadcasting assets including CNN, Cartoon Network and more without being forced to sell off cable networks. ➤ On the value of having a coaching background in the current era of athletics: “It's really important to have somebody in the role as the director of athletics who can mentor, who can teach, who can stand alongside and help these young coaches navigate the challenges of recruiting and having a recruiting strategy and having a good retention strategy. We're seeing it all over the country. People are leveraging athletics for enrollment, especially at small private liberal arts schools. They really need now more than ever that athletic enrollment to help the overall enrollment. So having a background, I think, as a coach, is probably more important now than ever before.”
➤ Where will future DIII ADs come from as staff are stretched thin? “I honestly think that's going to be determined by the people who sit in the role of president and institutions and what they value. … I think it will be important, and it would be my advice to presidents, find somebody who has a really good working understanding of enrollment and enrollment management because right now for most everybody, this is an enrollment tool. It's a critical enrollment tool. And having somebody with that kind of experience who can help the director of enrollment management, the director of admissions, that's going to be a really important piece I think for a lot of schools to just be able to survive what we're going to navigate over the next few years.”
➤ On the importance of ADs reporting directly to the president: “I've been very fortunate to always report to the president. And I think that's critical because nobody can articulate the challenges secondhand. Something always gets missed in the translation. … Most of those people have never coached, have never done this job as a director of athletics and have no real concept of the challenges.” (link)
Last week, the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents approved a number of facility projects across the system. At Wisconsin-Whitewater, the board approved $7.4M to replace around 106K square-feet of roofing at the Williams Center. At Wisconsin-River Falls, the board approved a $4.59M exterior track and infield turf replacement at Ramer Field and a $1.413M stadium grandstand renovation and bleacher installation to improve accessibility and the overall fan experience. Westminster (PA) has upgraded its weight room for the first major upgrade in nine years. AD Jason Lener: “We'd been working on this probably for a year and a half and trying to figure out what to do. Now that kind of that's become the athletic weight room, we needed more racks in there to accommodate all our teams. So just having six in there was not enough. Instead of just buying two racks that weren't a match, it really made sense to try to get eight new racks in there, so it all looked nice. … It’s important to me is that when people come to our campus that it looks really, really nice and they're impressed with our facilities. When there's a lot of construction going on, that's a lot of good things for you guys (student-athletes). That's ultimately what we want is nice new things for our athletes.” (link)

The share of the high school graduating class of 2025 immediately enrolling in college increased slightly across all economic backgrounds, according to data released Thursday by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center. Per Higher Ed Dive’s Laura Spitalniak, post-graduation fall enrollment at low-poverty high schools rose to 73.9%, up from 73.1% in 2024, while immediate enrollment for high-poverty high school graduates reached 51.2% (up from 50.8%). College persistence rates among high-poverty high school graduates also improved for the class of 2023, climbing to 76% (up from 74.3%), and to 90.6% (up from 89.4%) among low-poverty graduates. Additionally, the share of high-poverty high school graduates enrolling in college within two years grew by 2.1 percentage points to 58.7% for the class of 2023, with urban high schools showing the largest two-year enrollment gain at 67.1%.
