Batten AD/Softball HC Brandon Elliott chats with AD Emerita Joanne Renn-Barnes to discuss the university’s rebrand, goals for the Marlins and more. Key takeaways…

On the support of donors and the rebrand: “We're at somewhat of a contentious time with the name change and just rolling over there, but what stayed the same is we used to say ‘Once a Marlin, Always a Marlin.’ That hasn't changed. It's still the same people. It's just the future of this place is getting ready to absolutely explode and go in a direction because of the generosity of Jane Batten and many, many others. It's just going to go into a different stratosphere.”

Goals for the Marlins: “When we set our individual goals for our teams in our department, I'm asking them to come in with their recruiting goals and with their fundraising goals and with their alumni relations goals, but I'm also asking them to come in with one BHAG (big, hairy, audacious goal) for this year and for five years down the road. So my BHAG for this department and what I've shared in front of our entire department was I want to get to a point where every program is in the NCAA tournament in the same year. What a marvelous run that would be. We're going to have a lot of work to do, but I think we have the right people, we have the right foundation, we have the right support systems in place to be able to make that happen and we have the right coaches that are motivated to do that.”

More from Elliott: “What we've instituted is a +1 mentality. I think what I shared with you the other day is looking at where we're at in the Directors’ Cup standings, I challenge our coaches across the board. If you've won the conference and you finished first, I want you to toe the line. Hold that line for us. If you finish ninth, finish eighth. If you finish fourth, finish third. … If we can collectively across the board have a +1 mentality, then all of a sudden we're going to move up three, four, five spots within that Directors’ Cup standings. But then we've shifted that because it's not only about wins, and you know that. We've shifted that is what that +1 looks like for us across the department? … So if I can +1 this thing every single day and that's the legacy that I leave, I'll take that.” (link)

In a virtual news conference conducted today by those opposing passage of the Protect College Sports Act, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) continued to take issue with the legislation as only protecting a “system of exploitation,” while granting the NCAA an “unprecedented antitrust exemption” to continue violating the law. Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger notes Murphy will continue his work to oppose the bill this week. Murphy: “I hear my colleagues talk about the chaos … yes, things are different, but the chaos primarily impacts the coaches who all of a sudden have to work harder to keep athletes who are no longer indentured. … We should recognize this is a Civil Rights issue. Let’s not mince words, many of the most valuable athletes are Black and almost all of the people protecting the billions made in the industry are white.” (link); More from the nation’s capital…

During today’s pro-PCSA presser, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) had this to say of the legislation’s vote count. “We'll see if we have 60. I don't know the answer for sure yet. I hope we do. They've worked very hard to get the bill in a form that I think addresses and solves the problem.” Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) adds: “In the next 10 days, the Senate is voting on the Protect College Sports Act. We are slated to be in second as soon as the crypto bill is done.” (link, link)

During Sen. Murphy’s anti-PCSA presser, NAACP President Derrick Johnson accused legislation supporters of attempting "to buy off members of the Congressional Black Caucus.” Johnson adds: “HBCUs deserve direct federal investment, not a political trade-off.” (link)

Student-athletes that are part of the Wisne lawsuit have sent a letter to congressional leadership, expressing concern over the PCSA, which would eliminate a student-athletes’ right to sue the NCAA. A group of 11 organizations, including the AFL-CIO, Athletes.org, the NAACP, the National College Players Association, the United College Athletes Association and more, also sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) expressing their opposition to the Protect College Sports Act as currently drafted. They strongly urge any Senate vote to be “delayed until the legislation more adequately addresses the needs and concerns of college athletes.” Full letters. (link, link)

Elsewhere in D.C., U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg (R-MI) and Sen. Jon Husted (R-OH) are introducing a bill that limits the amount of international athletes on a college sports roster to 20%, per Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, who notes the bill is called the ‘‘Training and Education for American Members in University Sports and Athletics Act” or TEAM USA Act. Hockey Happenings…

The U.S. government’s 50% tariffs against Canada are set to have a major impact on hockey equipment with sticks and skates among the 550+ goods to be impacted by the tariffs. This comes as the total spend on hockey equipment has grown 45.4% from 2020 to 2025 to $332.9M. Sports & Fitness Industry Association CEO Todd Smith on the impact on costs and the growth of the game: “This is not a minor blip by any means. Even if manufacturers have moved over the last several years from Canada to other countries, there’s still a healthy amount being manufactured in Canada and, yeah, this 50% tariff is a big deal. … This has, obviously, the potential to really stunt that growth. It couldn’t be a worse time for tariffs to hit in terms of really having the possibility to increase costs.” (link)
