More from UC Santa Cruz AD Chris Spells’ Small College Conversation on the big picture for Banana Slugs facilities and DIII, as a member of the Strategic Planning and Finance Committee. D3.takeaways…

➤ Coming off of a record $500K donation to upgrade the East Field running path and a resurfacing of the East tennis courts, Spells’ next focus is the East Field House. “The fitness center currently is about 25 years old. Not that it's bad, it's in great shape, it's just there were about six to 7,000 people on campus when that was built. We're now around 20,000. And so our task is to figure out what a new home looks like. We want a space for our indoor sports to play. We want a space for strength and conditioning. … And so that is the big picture. And I think in the past there have been challenges, being on a UC campus, there's a lot that has to happen to get it done. It's not private, where you can just like, we got the funding and we're done. We have to make sure that there's true alignment. While that is challenging from a timing perspective, it makes it easier because when you get to get going forward, which is, I think, where we are right now, everyone's on the same page.”

➤ On DIII funding priorities: “While championship experience continues to be that, I think there's a challenge of seeing how can we further spread the dollars? If you're an institution that is never going to make the tournament, how can you still feel that you're a part of what we're doing? And not to go down the path of subdivisions and all that stuff, but I think some of that comes from feeling a part of the experience no matter what. And so how do we figure that out? I think that's a big one. I think from a financial standpoint, I personally think we're in a really good space. Being tied to the revenue that comes through from DI for the next, what, eight years at least, is a really good thing.” (link)

Hanover AD Mark Shook sat down with Indiana Town Athletics to discuss managing through the enrollment cliff, retention and more. Here are some of his most notable comments…

➤ “I don't know that it's a cliff more than it's just a gentle kind of glide downhill, but there are going to be less kids. And so what you have to do is work that much harder and make sure your programs, you have good coaches, good culture leaders, you have nice facilities, you're fundraising because college, the margins now are so tight that if you want to continue to stay up-to-date, competitive and relevant, you need to figure out ways to raise money. You need to figure out ways to have that support.”

➤ On retention: “That's really what I've been proud of too here at Hanover with our coaches: they create cultures where even if you're not playing a bunch, you still love being a part of that team, you feel cared for, you feel supported and they stay. And so there's a number, and I'm working through some of that now that if we're at 50%, there's probably another easily 10% or more of students that came here thinking I'm going to play my sport. I want to be a part of this. And then they got here, they found out that there's so much to do at Hanover as a small campus, whether it's in the Greek life, whether it's in the clubs and the organizations, academic program things that they stay, they choose or self-select that their sport isn't maybe what they thought. They're not on scholarship, but they stay. And so that retention piece is even more valuable.” (link)

Last week, Shenandoah broke ground on its 77K square-foot James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics and Events Center expansion that is expected to be ready for fall 2027. Interim AD Bill Stewart: “This expansion is a game-changer for our football, cross country, and track and field programs, and it will create further opportunities to support other Shenandoah Athletic programs such as men’s volleyball. Having access to dedicated, top-tier locker room facilities elevates the daily experience of our student-athletes, and will help foster the championship culture we strive for at Shenandoah.” (link)

Springfield receives a $500K donation from Gaylen (Jake) ’72 and Maureen Jacobson to create the Jacobson Athletic Performance Initiative which will include upgrades to the weight room, added sports performance staffing and resources, a comprehensive sports nutrition programs, enriched fueling station, expanded mental health and sports psychology resources and more. Wisconsin-Stevens Point receives a significant donation from supporters Mike and Jill Williams to renovate the men’s basketball locker room, which will now be named the Mike and Jill Williams Basketball Locker Room. (link)

From yesterday’s CFO.ticker: Small private institutions are slashing published tuition rates to boost enrollment and counteract rising skepticism over higher education costs, Bloomberg's Amanda Albright observes. Emory & Henry reduced tuition from near $40K to $19,990, while Concordia-St. Paul, which saw undergraduate enrollment climb over 70% after a 33% cut in 2013, announced a further $5,500 reduction. Albright notes a NACUBO survey of over 250 private colleges revealed an average tuition discount rate of 57% for first-time students, and E&H President Lou Fincher says: “We just knew that we couldn’t be a school with a price tag of $40K and attract students, particularly those in the socioeconomic groups that are in our region. We couldn’t continue on that same path.” (link); Also of note, bond yields are pushing to historic highs, with the US 10-year Treasury hitting 5.34%, its highest mark since 2002, with Citigroup attributing the 60- to 100-basis-point surge to inflation pressures stemming from the Middle East, rising government debt that recently pushed the US national total to $40T, and corporate borrowing to fund AI investments that averaged $466B in the first half of the year.
