More from Schreiner AD Bill Raleigh’s Small College Conversation on returning to the ASC and what lies ahead for the Mountaineers. Key takeaways…

➤ On the benefits of rejoining the ASC: “The biggest one is it's a smaller conference, so all six teams qualify for conference championships and anybody who's building programs and trying to help them, that's a big, big thing. You go win a couple games in a conference tournament and your whole prospect changes, your whole season changes and how the team approaches themselves.” On the other hand: “It's a trade-off. I think football, it hurts a little bit. It's going to be a higher lift to get to competitive because of just how established and how good those programs are. But over the big picture, our footprint is closer, so our travel's a little bit easier. … The downside is we don't get as many conference games, so you've got to fill those non-conference games. So everything's a trade-off, but they've been great partners for us.”

➤ “Right now we're in what we call a privilege, not a right. So we're messaging to our athletes about trying to get them focused on the bigger picture, and we're really emphasizing making sure they're going to class, making sure they're doing the little things outside the classroom or outside the athletic arena to make sure they're able to succeed. … The number of professors who have come up to me saying it's just a different feeling in the classroom because the kids are engaged and expecting to be engaged and all those things, that's been really exciting.”

➤ Looking ahead: “Growth is a big thing and responsible growth is the most important thing. That's why football has been great, but we've got to make sure we're growing it and I'm trying to keep people looking forward. As we get better, as we go through this, our number of freshmen are going to start going down. So we can't get caught. We had a hundred freshmen this year. We'll have probably 70 next year and hopefully level off at 50 or something. Well, if you get caught going, what happened to that 50 freshmen you had? We've got to fill them in someplace else. So that's a big process. Then we have a lot of building we have to do. Infrastructure never stays up to growth and we've got some things we've got to get caught up on. … A lot of infrastructure that we have to really figure out. So my plate is full for the next few years, there's no question about that, but it's exciting and it's been fun here. It's been a team effort.” (link)

The Championships Committee is recommending preliminary round hosts of the Men’s and Women’s Team Tennis Championship receive the same NCAA live streaming stipend to support early round matches. The addition would cost $48K per year, with the Champs Committee recommending the Strategic Planning and Finance Committee include tennis starting this academic year. Also of note, the committee added average time gap from scoring student-athletes to the cross country selection criteria and denied Johns Hopkins’ tennis waiver to be eligible for the Centennial Conference AQ while competing as an independent. Front Office Sports and Teamworks released the Teamworks State of AI in Sports 2026 report, revealing a stark disconnect between artificial intelligence adoption and measurable financial returns across the sports ecosystem. While 90% of sports organizations expect their AI usage to increase over the next two to three years and 79% expanded their investments over the past 12 months, only 15% can currently demonstrate clear ROI. The research, which surveyed 164 collegiate and professional organizations, indicates that fragmented, department-level purchasing serves as the primary operational bottleneck. Key findings…

➤ Organizations deploying AI against an organization-wide strategy report clear ROI at a 37% rate, compared to just 2% for those adopting tools one department at a time.

➤ Respondents cited integrating existing systems as their top planned investment (58%), while only 12% plan to replace a core system. Buyers prioritize accuracy (77%) and data security (65%) far above the sophistication of the underlying model (9%) when evaluating new products.

➤ Athletic departments historically purchased separate software platforms for different internal functions, leaving medical data in one system, scouting data in another, and performance metrics in a third. Because artificial intelligence requires unified data to function effectively, this software fragmentation severely limits the technology's ability to generate actionable insights. When an organization consolidates its data into a connected record (one to three systems), AI tools can analyze the complete athlete profile to produce a clear return on investment—defined by the report as measurable financial gains or definitively improved operational decisions—67% of the time. When that data remains scattered across a fragmented record (four or more systems), AI tools fail to connect the dots, causing the ROI success rate to plummet to just one in eight. (link)

Regular youth sports participation reached a 12-year high of nearly 41% in 2025, propelled by post-pandemic surges in tennis and golf alongside continued flag football growth, per data from the Sports & Fitness Industry Association and the Aspen Institute's Project Play initiative. From 2019 to 2025, core tennis participation rose 72% among kids ages 6-12 and 46% for ages 13-17, while core golf play increased 33% [ages 6-12] and 36% [ages 13-17]. On the other end, core participation among 13-17-year-olds fell 41.7% in wrestling, 39.3% in team swimming, 23.6% in track & field and 22.7% in lacrosse. Data shows retention challenges for soccer and baseball, with participation for both peaking at six years old and following a consistent downward trend as kids age, citing early sport specialization. Rsing costs widened the household economic divide with those boasting higher average household wealth statistically more capable of absorbing rising youth sports expenses, even amid economic downturns or cuts to public sports programming. Core participation for children ages 6-12 in households earning $25K or less dropped by 7% in 2025, expanding the participation gap between high- and low-income tiers to 24.8 percentage points, up from 14.5 percentage points in 2022.
