NCAA President Charlie Baker joined the SportsWise Podcast with Gabe Feldman to discuss the Protect College Sports Act and more. Here are some takeaways…
➤ Asked about the prospects for the PCSA in this Congress, Baker remains cautiously optimistic: “I do think the amount of traffic that’s taken place in the last few lame duck sessions does give me some optimism that we could end up being part of that back and forth that’ll take place. Literally the last couple of Congresses, more than half of the legislation they passed in the lame duck.”
➤ Expanding the revenue and audience base for non-football championships: "Our database is everything but FBS football. Schools have lots of data on that, but we have tons of data on all the other sports. And I think there's a real opportunity here for us to work together to grow the game and the visibility associated with all those other sports. And to me, that's a big part of this conversation because if the football program is still the mechanism on which you support and pay for the deficits that are running so many of your other programs, I think it's a much more challenging argument to make. The goal here should be to raise the revenue base for many of those other sports." (link)
NCAA Chief Legal Officer Scott Bearby sent a letter to membership on the antitrust lawsuit over DIII’s ban on athletic scholarships. “They seek certification of a nationwide damages class consisting of Division III student-athletes who participated from October 21, 2022, forward, as well as an injunctive relief class consisting of all current and future Division III student-athletes. … This is not the first challenge to Division III's prohibition on athletics-based financial aid. In Rock v. NCAA, a federal antitrust case filed in the Southern District of Indiana, the court dismissed claims challenging Division III's financial aid restrictions. In March 2013, the court granted the NCAA's motion to dismiss, concluding that the challenged rules were procompetitive and lawful as a matter of law. We will pursue all options to obtain a similar, early dismissal of the Printz case.” (link); Here is the full filing in the Printz case. (link)
The NCAA is officially participating in the Bad Actor Program initiative to target online harassment and betting-related abuse directed at student-athletes, coaches and officials. Developed by Integrity Compliance 360 and Signify Group alongside Fanatics Sportsbook, the program tracks online offenders to support enforcement measures such as bans from participating sportsbooks. The partnership follows an initial study that flagged over 5K verified abusive posts during championship events, with sports betting directly linked to 12% of all verified abuse, increasing to 19% in men’s basketball. The NCAA’s 2025 GOALS study separately found that 51% of DI men’s basketball student-athletes received social media abuse tied to performance, while 46% received negative or threatening messages from bettors. Schreiner AD Bill Raleigh sat down with College.town’s Kristen Eargle to discuss the buildup and launch of the Mountaineers’ inaugural varsity football season. Football got underway last year with 100 student-athletes and a JV schedule. “The idea was really just to, not so much the football, the university, to try to get them to see the changes. You bring a hundred men on campus, it changes dynamics. … Most of our players are freshmen and sophomores right now, and we wanted to build it internally that way to make sure that, again, it's a building process.” Here are some more notable comments…
➤ The Mountaineers have a two-year deal with Kerrville ISD to play at the local high school stadium three miles from campus. With over 2K fans at each home game so far, Raleigh credits HC Keith Allen for his community involvement as there has been buzz around Kerrville for the launch since 2022. As for SU’s future home: “There are a lot of other priorities that we need to get to before we build the stadium that's really for five games. So it is in the master plan, it is down the road, but it's been a great situation.”
➤ On what success for the program looks like beyond just the scoreboard: “The big picture is we want to integrate them into the university. That's been, I think, one of my proudest moments is the president has gotten on board and the university has gotten on board to say that we want this to be part of us, not a separate entity. Football is so big, it's the equivalent of adding five teams. It can overwhelm everything. We were fortunate enough to build a turf soccer field with lights for our soccer program and we moved our practice football field where our soccer field was. We built a 5,000 square-foot weight room for all our athletes. So we've done a lot of things to try to integrate it and try to make sure that football is part of us as opposed to we're an appendage of football. That was my number one goal with this.”
➤ At the same time, SU added beach volleyball and flag football and is evaluating adding swimming. With close to 600 student-athletes, Raleigh on what may be next: “The tough part is we're running out of options because we've got 21 sports. If we were in swimming, it'd be 23. There are not many more. There's going to be some stretching to try to find what the next ones are as we try to continue to grow.” (link)

➤ John Carroll will add men’s volleyball starting in 2027-28. The Blue Streaks plan to compete in the MCVL. (link)
➤ Regent, Warren Wilson and William Peace will join the Continental Volleyball Conference, starting this season. (link)
➤ Marietta is the latest to add women’s flag football as its 22nd varsity sport. (link)
This weekend’s Delaware Valley-King’s football game will move to Sunday due to a shortage of officials. (link)

People & Places…
➤ Saint Vincent elevates Asst. AD for Facilities and Internal Operations Nicole Karr to Assoc. AD/SWA. (link)
➤ Maryville welcomes Lincoln Memorial (DII) Men’s and Women’s Tennis AC Mimi Li as the Scots’ first full-time Women’s Tennis HC. (link)

Preliminary data from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center of 46% of institutions shows public and private four-year undergraduate year-over-year enrollment is steady, up 0.3% and flat, respectively. Graduate enrollment at public and private institutions fell 2.1% and 1.4%, respectively, as master’s program enrollment dropped 3.7% YoY. Louisiana saw the biggest year-over-year jump in undergraduate students, with a 7.8% increase in students. From fall 2024 to fall 2026, Kentucky (+9.6%), Idaho (+8.2%), North Carolina (+7.2%), New Mexico (+7.0%) and Texas (+6.3%) saw the most growth. On the other end, Vermont has seen the largest two-year drop in undergraduate students at 5.4%. Among the top major fields, Health Professions and Engineering saw the largest increases, up over 6% each, while computer and information science enrollment plummeted 12.4%. Senior Research Director Matthew Holsapple: “The important change this fall isn’t widespread decline; it’s the loss of that broad-based growth we saw last year.” (link, link - data)
