The DIII Management Council is recommending the Presidents Council oppose the age-based eligibility proposal for the 2027 NCAA Convention, citing “more time is needed to observe the implications of the legislation adopted by Divisions I and II and assess the division’s current eligibility model.” The council also recommended opposing establishing a spring practice period in football, believing any playing season changes should be paused due to the ongoing DIII Analysis Working Group review and recommended supporting legislation to reduce the time when vacancies on Presidents and Management Councils can be filled. The Management Council did discuss referrals from the Analysis Working Group – Model 2035 membership and the collective purchasing consortium – and will provide feedback. (link)
The DI Membership Committee is recommending the DI Board of Directors introduce legislation to change the DI reclassification application fee to be “based on six times the amount of the estimated annual average value of direct benefits through distribution and championships made available to Division I members.” Here’s the thesis…
➤ “This recommendation reflects the committee’s conclusion that the current application fee undervalues Division I membership. The increased application fee is based on the fewest number of years that a reclassifying institution needs to move from entering the reclassification process to becoming fully eligible to receive DI revenue distribution. It more accurately reflects the value of Division I membership, retains the legislation’s existing refund provisions, mitigates the dilution of revenue distribution for members of the division and helps positions the division to address any championships-related pressures a larger division may face. Further, the increased application fee helps a reclassifying institution demonstrate its financial commitment to Division I’s philosophy, operating principles and student-athlete experience.”
MIAA Commissioner Lauren Bryne-Dunn joined The MIAA Pulse to lay out the strengths and challenges of the league: “The competitiveness, I think, is huge. We had a handful of individual championships last year between track and field and swim and diving and then national championships the past few years, so it's been awesome watching that. I think on the flip side, a challenge is figuring out how we can remain competitive, especially with NPI rankings and how national championships are based on that now, just figuring out how we can elevate our schedules to remain competitive. Then, just being America's first conference is a huge strength. Just the rich history that we have.” (link)

Maryville receives a record $1.5M gift from the Zappa family towards a new football practice facility that is set to be ready for the 2027-28 academic year. AD Andrew Wu on the long-term plan for football: “I think we have everything we need from a staffing, coaching, player and culture perspective, but we're just lacking a little bit as far as facilities go to keep moving our program forward. We've readjusted our plans for these facilities, and this gift allows us to get a major project done so that we can demonstrate to our community that we are moving the needle for Athletics and for football.” (link)
With the addition of women’s flag football, Capital President Jared Tice on the growth of athletics: “The addition of women's flag football is part of a broader investment in the Capital student-athlete experience. The University will add athletic training capacity to provide enhanced support for its growing number of student-athletes and will recondition the South lawn athletic field into a competition-quality, natural grass surface. The upgraded field will provide an additional high-quality practice and competition venue for Capital's outdoor field programs, increasing flexibility across the University's athletic facilities and supporting the continued growth of Comet Athletics.” (link)
Manhattanville has broken ground on its new multi-sport field project that will include turfing its baseball field, along with new lighting, seating, press box, bullpens, batting cages and more, and new field striping for its turf field to support a number of programs. (link)

Ithaca’s projected FY27 budget deficit has grown from $4M to $8M after missing its enrollment target by over 100 students. The college will reduce non-salary operating expenses and retirement contributions to save around $2M and explore the potential for staff layoffs. President La Jerne Cornish: “I know the uncertainty that that creates, especially for colleagues who have already taken on additional responsibilities. I am asking the board of trustees to consider allowing a higher deficit this year as we work toward budget neutrality in fiscal year 2028.” (link)
“The way we’re running now, from an economic model standpoint, just isn’t sustainable. You can’t go do it forever, and so you need to find the next thing.” That’s Kenyon Board of Trustees Chair of the Budget and Finance Committee Mike Arbour on the college’s projected $15M budget deficit. Arbour says the Kenyon has been running a deficit since 2023-24, but it has grown to now be 11% of net revenues. The deficits have been covered by “drawing down on existing resources.” Arbour believes the keys to getting Kenyon on a healthy financial track include more aggressive fundraising efforts and expanding the Kenyon Keys learning and development opportunities to try and increase enrollment. More from Arbour: “There’s no profit goal at Kenyon. There’s no expense cut for the purpose of building the environment. All anyone actually wants to do is have a giant pile of money to be able to invest in all the things that make this place great.” (link)
Illinois Tech plans to borrow up to $200M from its endowment through FY28, per Bloomberg. The college’s endowment reported a market value of $300M at the end of FY26. The move led S&P Global Ratings to cut the institution’s credit rating from BB+ to BB. (link)
