Maryville announces it will depart the SAA to rejoin the CCS starting in 2027. President Bryan Coker: “We are honored to reunite with our very good friends in the CCS. The Collegiate Conference of the South is growing and thriving in this disruptive era for intercollegiate athletics. We know the CCS and its member institutions well, and we are certain that the CCS's future looks incredibly bright. … While the SAA was the right conference choice for Maryville in 2024, we believe the CCS is the best option for us now and for the future. We were honored to join and compete amongst the SAA's institutions, and we wish the conference all the best, moving forward.” (link)
The CUNYAC will now be known as the CITY Collegiate Conference, starting in 2027-28. Brooklyn AD/CITY Collegiate Conference AD Council Chair Erik Smiles: “The creation of the City Collegiate Conference will help elevate the student athlete experience by securing our paths in multiple team sports to the NCAA Tournament, increasing participation numbers in individual sport conference championships, improve the level of competition within the conference and limiting travel for our student athletes allowing them to have the proper balance of academics and athletics.” Skye Design assisted with the rebrand. The American Rivers announces the Riverbend Bowl Series, a two-game postseason event held at Neenah High School on November 21. The NACC will be one of the teams participating in the Riverbend Bowl Series. (link, link); A-R-C Commissioner Marie Stroman joined The Left Hash Call’s Seth Howard to discuss the new event, as The Left Hash Call will be the Riverbend Bowl Series’ official media partner. Here are some of the most notable takeaways…
➤ The A-R-C will have a bid along with other nearby conferences that will be selected depending on each league’s AQ selection process to determine what the next team in would be. “If we go down a certain level for a conference, there's kind of a cutoff. We're not going to take up to two past what you would send to the NCAAs. So we have scenarios built in; if we need to plug a new team in, A-R-C actually gets that next bid.” The four participants will be matched up by NPI, with the top two and bottom two teams facing off to try to create more parity.
➤ Why the Fox Cities region? First, the league looked to the NCAA’s 500-mile rule as an initial guide, with Fox Cities having experience previously hosting the DIII Baseball World Series and Fox Cities CVB Director of Sports Marketing Matt Ten Haken being a former DIII student-athlete at Wisconsin-La Crosse.
➤ On creating an elevated postseason experience for student-athletes: “There's this element of almost just being in awe and just stepping into a venue and just knowing that there is extra care taken into the event. ... The headquarter hotel for this event is literally made for football teams. It's where the NFL teams stay when they play the Green Bay Packers. Those are the kinds of little things that the fans may not see, but the student-athletes, as they go through it, like, wow, this is extra and this is important. Those are the things we're trying to build into it, as well as being sustainable because money is a thing and we want this event to keep happening.” (link)
Internal communications and public records reveal that Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell’s advocacy group Saving College Sports (SCS) utilized a deep network of major conservative political figures, university leaders and conference commissioners to aggressively lobby for the Protect College Sports Act, per Front Office Sports’ Jon Loesche. Key details…
➤ Club for Growth President/Federalist Society Co-Founder David McIntosh and DraftKings Head of Corporate Development and Strategy/North Carolina Board of Trustees Chair/former Vanderbilt AD Malcolm Turner were among those invited by former Baylor Board Chair Dary Stone to an August 4 SCS strategy call with Sen. Eric Schmitt, (R-MO). The duo’s involvement in the effort to pass college sport legislation had previously gone unreported.
➤ Loesche: “Stone provided recipients with lobbying templates to send to senators, sent numerous campaign updates, and repeatedly pleaded with the mailing list recipients to contact university leaders and senators. … In late June, as Stone was rallying university leaders behind the bill, he and Campbell gave a combined $30K to Winning For America Fund, a joint fundraising committee for Schmitt. … Five weeks later, Schmitt headlined a strategy call to rally support for the bill.”
➤ With the PCSA facing an uncertain future in the Senate, Stone ramped up his urgency, sending a July 30 instruction: “There will be a vote amongst the Conferences on PCSA today. Please contact your Presidents.” He asked recipients to have them vote in favor, adding, “Very important. This is it.” More. (link)
➤ Campbell responds to Loesche’s reporting: “Lazy, sensationalist headline here. The ‘DraftKings executive’ is a board of trustees member at the University of North Carolina, and we spoke to him in that capacity - one of the hundreds of universities Saving College Sports has engaged with. And of course we have talked to ‘influential’ politicians. How else would we help get the bill passed??” (link)

The NCAA and RQ+ are partnering on the Next Generation Officiating Initiative for the second straight year to provide free virtual professional development for DII, DIII, NAIA, junior college and high school officials. The RQ+ Founder/CEO Bo Boroski: “NCAA men’s basketball leadership was hopeful to get 100 officials in the program last year, and the final number was over 700. We were confident this initiative could get legs, and we’re excited to participate in another edition.” After the conclusion of virtual courses in March, up to 100 participants will be selected to attend the in-person Next Generation of Officiating program in Detroit, the site of the 2027 DI Men’s Basketball Championship. Selected officials will take part in a weekend full of events, including a full-day clinic and the chance to officiate select games for the USA Basketball Junior National Team Minicamp and the 2027 Manager Games tournament. DIII Men’s Basketball National Coordinator of Officials Jim Haney: “The feedback from participants reinforced the value of connecting developing officials with experienced leaders who have been in their shoes. This program is about opening doors, advancing careers and creating meaningful opportunities.” (link)
Rockbeach Training has officially launched, giving ticket offices a place for new sales representatives to practice live phone calls with 175+ AI customers who respond in real voices, in real time, before they ever call a real fan. Rockbeach Training Founder/CEO/former Cincinnati (DI) Deputy AD/CRO Anthony Di Fino: “Make the call before you make the call. In this business, every new rep learns on real fans, because there’s nowhere else to practice. That’s the most expensive call in sports: a poorly trained intern or rep losing a fan. Now there’s somewhere else to practice.” (link)
