Russell Sage AD Jim Lyons sat down with Asst. Director of Athletic Communications Matt Zumbolo on the Athletics Spotlight to discuss the college’s merger with Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Lyons: “Right off the bat, we're going to be Russell Sage University, which brings some prestige to your degree and should, I think, allow us to recruit a higher-level student-athlete. But so many of the things that we're going to benefit from are resources that we didn't have. I mean, we'll really be doubling the size of our campus, adding an extra gym. You mentioned the turf field, which we've got our logo on now and it's one of the nicest turfs in the country today, as well as other areas over on the ACP campus, whether it's moving over there for the dining hall, which has been an incredible hit with our student-athletes and our staff. … But it's those things that we didn't have to spend money to get. … I think will go a long way to helping us put our best effort out there and put our student-athletes in a position to have the best possible experience they can.” (link)

Last week, NCAA President Charlie Baker recently dispatched a letter to House lawmakers urging them to pass the Protect College Sports Act in its current form, while notably citing statistics that highlight the negative effects multiple transfers are having on graduation rates. From the missive, in part: “The NCAA recently conducted a comprehensive review of graduation outcomes for all Division I student-athletes who entered college sports in 2018. Despite the fact that many in this class graduated before the current unlimited transfer policy went into effect, we are already seeing fewer Division I student-athletes graduating in six years. Across race, gender and sport, our review found that multiple transfers negatively impact student-athlete graduation. Of those who did not transfer, 88% graduated on time, and 12% did not. Of one-time transfers, 81% graduated on time, and 19% did not. And only 71% of multiple transfers graduated on time, while 29% did not. For decades, participating in NCAA sports provided a pathway to academic success at rates that far surpassed those for nonathletes, but endless attacks on eligibility and transfer rules are threatening that success.” (link)

Next week, DII and DIII presidents and chancellors will meet to discuss the impact of athletics on their campuses, higher education funding and affordability, enrollment pressures and more to “help inform future divisional strategic planning and potential changes in legislation or policy. Meeting attendees will include the Division II Executive Board, Division III Presidents Council, presidents from Division II conferences not represented on the Executive Board, Division III Presidents Advisory Group, and select national office staff.” (link)

FloSports Files…
➤ FloSports has signed a multi-year global streaming rights deal with the National Lacrosse League with the company to launch a new FloLacrosse channel, similar to the FloCollege channel. Flo EVP for Global Rights Acquisition Phil Wendler: “We’re not trying to go in and compete with folks for Tier 1 rights, because the bigger players in the world do a tremendous job. But there’s a lot of non-Tier 1 partners that just aren’t getting the love they deserve. … Because with our investment with NLL, if it doesn’t grow, we are not going to be successful. We’re putting our money where our mouth is, we’re putting our resources where our mouth is and we’re going to build a whole portfolio around it to grow around that.” Flo plans to stream select NLL games and the finals on the FAST FloSports Channel. (link)
➤ FloSports’ media rights deal with the CAA (DI), its lone DI partner, is set to expire at the end of 2026-27 and Commissioner Joe D'Antonio says the league is negotiating with Flo and CBS Sports Network on an extension, while also exploring outside options. “The good news is that we're going to have options. ... There are options both within our current structure and outside of our current structure.” (link)

Mississippi University for Women is exploring a partnership with the city of Columbus that would renovate four unused local softball fields to become the new permanent home for the Owls baseball program, as the team currently plays at nearby Columbus Christian Academy on a non-NCAA regulation field. The two proposals range from $2M to $5.4M, with the leaner option including dugouts, bullpens, scoreboard and lighting. The $5.4M version would also include a practice field, batting cages, press boxes, concession stand and more, while also renovating an existing city softball field. From The Dispatch’s Emma McRae: “To fund the project, Mayor Stephen Jones said the city could potentially borrow funds to be paid back by The W once it begins leasing the facility.” The proposal will go before the Columbus City Council tomorrow. North Central President Abiódún Gòkè-Paríolá on the decision to rename the university to North Central University Naperville on July 1. “Research shows that North Central is respected by those who know it, but too many external audiences and even many familiar friends do not clearly understand the breadth of its offerings, its competitive accreditation, and other points of distinction. It is also often confused with a community college. With community colleges about to start offering 4-year degrees the need to differentiate ourselves from them has become even more urgent. … The number of college-bound high school students in Illinois will decline by 32% in the next ten years. Therefore, even though we have experienced good enrollment results, to continue thriving in a market with such significant decline requires us to leverage every advantage we have at a moment when we are still strong. Acting now capitalizes on current momentum to strengthen differentiation before the severe Illinois and Midwest demographic cliff and intensified competition in a shrinking market increase pressure on enrollment, yield, discounting, and net tuition revenue.” The institution will continue to be known as the Cardinals and North Central or NC, not NCUN.
