Martin Luther names Osceola Magic (G League) President Hans Steinbrenner as its next AD. President Rich Gurgel: “We are very thankful that God has brought us, in Hans, a new athletic director with years of experience in athletic leadership at the professional level. We look forward to the blessings God will use Hans to bring to our campus as he uses Hans' skills and experience to help us strengthen how athletics serves the mission of our college as we raise up men and women ‘Knighted for Ministry.’” (link)

Rhode Island College AD Don Tencher joined WPRO News to dive into the changes around the department and the institution, as RIC will begin men’s volleyball this year and add men’s lacrosse in 2027-28 with the goal of bringing 45 new student-athletes to campus. The women’s lacrosse program is also getting an upgrade with a full-time HC. These changes and more are set to bring the department to nearly 500 student-athletes. More key comments…

Tencher on facilities: “We try to be in Division I, especially as it relates to providing for our student athletes. We have some of the best facilities anywhere. Our new outdoor track facility is like a gem. We're probably the only Division III school in New England that has its own building for academic and student support.”

On mental health support: “Rather than reinvent the wheel, our medical staff is trained thoroughly, and our success center staff is trained thoroughly, but they're not the experts. They're there for the conduit of information and then making sure our kids get over to what is an incredible mental health center with a new director that we meet with consistently and the campus has put tons of money into it. So they're very linked into us. We don't have maybe like Providence (DI) has maybe a mental health person sitting in the athletic office, but they're a hundred yards away and they've been very, very supportive.” (link)

Reconvening after a five-week recess, House GOP leaders are weighing an early exit ahead of November’s mid-term elections, with Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) prioritizing a fast-track vote on a Senate-passed stopgap spending bill to avert a September 30 government shutdown. Supported by President Donald Trump and key congressional Democrats, the proposed 10-week funding patch would extend government operations through Dec. 11, effectively deferring major legislative battles, including a party-line budget reconciliation package, Russian sanctions and farm bill negotiations, to the post-election lame-duck session. While Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) plans to focus the upper chamber's brief September session on judicial nominations, cryptocurrency regulation via the Clarity Act and a multi-university college athletics overhaul, the House's stalled legislative agenda and internal procedural gridlock have fueled speculation that lawmakers will depart well before their scheduled Oct. 1 recess target. Rep. Morgan Griffith (R-VA): "So many people are having to run back and forth to campaign. I think we can get some other things done [beyond the spending stopgap], but the big bills will probably have to wait until after the election." (link)

The NCAA sent a memo to members Friday evening with a schedule of notable upcoming multi-plaintiff hearings. Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter notes: “184 college athletes currently are entitled to a 5th season of D1 competition as a result of TROs/lawsuits granted in 5 in 5 lawsuits. 76% of those athletes are men’s basketball players (96) and football players (45).” (link)

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in 3-0 fashion that states have oversight of regulating prediction marketplaces. Notable from the appeals panel: “The substance of the sports event contracts offered on Kalshi’s (exchange) is sports gambling, regardless of whether Kalshi calls them swaps. Kalshi’s attempts to distinguish its sports event contracts from sportsbooks betting are unpersuasive.” NCAA President Charlie Baker issued a statement in response to the ruling: “The NCAA has expressed its concerns about this in numerous forums, because it fractures competitive integrity and puts student-athletes at risk. The Federal Court of Appeals decision today that says states can regulate prediction markets the same way they regulate traditional sports betting is a win for student-athletes and the integrity of all sporting events.” As you might expect, Kalshi plans to appeal the ruling. Keystone Sports and other international college athlete placement agencies face growing obstacles as federal visa restrictions and tighter roster limits threaten their business models, according to Sportico's Daniel Libit. The subsidiary of Oslo-based Keystone Education Group charges foreign athletes up to $10K to navigate the U.S. collegiate pipeline, an avenue disrupted by a 10% drop in international student applications and the NCAA's five-year eligibility mandate. The industry is also dealing with the Department of Homeland Security's four-year cap on F-1 student visas, which forced Keystone Sports executive Gonzalo Corrales to scramble for emergency embassy appointments for 350 clients in July. University of Kentucky assistant professor Simran Kaur Sethi notes these pressures incentivize firms to misrepresent the college sports landscape to prospective families: "Some of them are really telling parents that there isn’t any issue on college campuses, so your son or daughter is going to be fine, because universities are their own bubble. Living in America, we know that isn’t true—but agencies don’t live in America. However, they’ve got to keep their business going." (link)

The annual NFHS High School Athletics Participation Survey indicated that 8,415,684 participants were involved in high school sports in 2025-26, good for a YoY increase of 149,440. The total includes 4,761,095 boys and 3,654,589 girls, both record highs. NFHS also reports the spike in the number of girls participating in flag football and wrestling since the pandemic continues. In the first post-pandemic survey in 2021-22, there were 15,716 girls participating in flag football nationally. That number has now ballooned to 102,360. Furthermore, participation in girls flag football increased 48.7% last year as the sport cracked the Top 10 list for most popular girls sports. The number of schools reporting girls flag football participation increased from 2,736 to 3,990 in the past year, and a total of 37 states will be either sanctioning the sport or conducting independent/pilot programs by next year. Meanwhile, participation in girls wrestling increased 19.9% YoY from 74,064 to 88,771. The number of schools sponsoring the sport for girls now totals 8,853. Golf had the largest percentage increase among boys sports with an 8.3% uptick to 175,757 participants, while outdoor track and field was up about 4,000 participants, and tennis and soccer each gained about 3,000 participants.
