Alfred announces former Knox Interim AD/former McDaniel/Swarthmore/Alvernia AD Adam Hertz as its next AD starting September 14. VP for Student Experience Kim Harvey: “Adam distinguished himself throughout the search process as a collaborative leader who understands the important role athletics plays in student development, campus engagement and institutional success. His commitment to student-athlete achievement, both in competition and in the classroom, aligns strongly with Alfred University's mission and values. I look forward to partnering with him as we continue to strengthen Saxon Athletics and further advance a vibrant and connected student experience at Alfred University.” (link)

St. Mary’s (MD) selects Susquehanna AD Sharief Hashim as its new VP for Athletics, starting October 5. President Rhonda Phillips: “Sharief brings a strong record of leadership and a clear understanding that athletics and recreation are integral to the educational experience and the broader mission of the institution. His commitment to student success, relationship building and strategic leadership will be tremendous assets to St. Mary's College. I am especially pleased to welcome him back to Maryland and look forward to the contributions he will make to our campus and our community.” (link)

More from Southwestern AD Ken Ralph’s Small College Conversation on his leadership perspectives, shifting the culture of the department and structural tweaks to meet the needs of the department. Here’s what you need to know…

Asked about overcoming pushback to the way things have been done, Ralph notes that he doesn’t expect everyone to change for him and not everyone can or will make the necessary changes. “Once there's some success within the new culture and within the new framework, it's easier for people to buy in and go, ‘Okay, hey, this isn't ruining my life. This isn't changing things dramatically. And actually I have more resources at my fingertips than I had doing it the old way.’ I think one of the biggest things is to really overcommunicate a lot of it. I've been accused by some past presidents of oversharing a little bit, but I work with really smart people. I work with people who thrive on good information and people can't make good decisions if they don't have good information at their fingertips.”

Part of changing that culture has been a recognition of the greater good of the department, alignment in leadership, checking off minor capital projects, creating a new senior staff position focused solely on the game day experience and more. “What it does is it gets people to say, ‘Wait a minute, we're starting to take ourselves seriously here. Wait, this is something that our peers don't have, and all of a sudden we do have.’ … So that's really become a change in the narrative of, let's talk about what we do have.”

“We don't need to be world beaters today, but what I want to do is every single day have the department get better so our students take a lot of pride in their sense of place and a lot of pride in being part of the Southwestern community and being part of our athletics department. I want them to defend this logo strongly because they're having a great experience, but I want our staff to do it too. I want our staff to be proud of working at Southwestern. I want them to be proud of the people they interact with every day. I think if you try to make it a race, if you try to do everything instantaneously, you're going to skip steps and you're going to end up in an area where you might be good for a year and then you fall back. Anybody can build a program; the great ones sustain them.” (link)

Hilbert will install a new regulation-size artificial turf field at its current on-campus practice field to serve the Hawks’ football, soccer and lacrosse programs. AD Tim Seil: “This project will have a tremendous impact on our student-athletes and the overall campus experience. Having the ability to compete on our own campus creates a stronger connection between athletics, student life, and the broader Hilbert community. It creates an environment where our students can represent Hilbert in front of their classmates, families, alumni, and supporters while building traditions that will last for generations.” Work is expected to begin this fall and be ready next fall. Four Hanover women’s swimming student-athletes have filed a class action Title IX lawsuit over the discontinuation of its program earlier this year. The student-athletes have also filed an emergency motion seeking to preserve their program and all women’s sports at Hanover. Plaintiffs attorney Arthur Bryant: “Hanover’s elimination of its women’s swimming team is a flagrant violation of Title IX. According to the most recent publicly available information, women were 50.34% of Hanover’s undergraduates in 2024-25, but they were given only 34.86% of the opportunities to participate in varsity sports. Hanover needs to add around 170 opportunities for women to reach gender equity. It should not be eliminating any women’s teams.” (link)

The NCAA approved a slate of technology and pace-of-play rules for the 2027 college baseball season, headlined by an experimental option allowing all three divisions to implement a challenge system for called balls and strikes. The updated rules also require a double first base for all games, permit larger 18-inch square bases and expand video review to cover fair-foul calls and all tag plays. The committee is also allowing conferences to test professional-style rules like a three-batter minimum for relief pitchers and a two-disengagement limit per at-bat. (link)

The DII and DIII Playing Rules Oversight Panel and the DI Men’s and Women’s Track and Field and Cross Country Oversight Committee approved a slate of rule changes for the 2026-27 track and field and cross country seasons, including a strict 30-minute warmup limit per flight for preliminary horizontal jumps and throwing events, which drops to 15 minutes for finals. The committees also mandated distinct barriers for cross country turns, permitted protests for suspected illegal shoes, and reverted equipment calibration guidelines to 2023-2024 standards. To protect competitive integrity, active coaches and enrolled track and field athletes are now explicitly prohibited from officiating meets involving competing schools. The updated policy also officially defines a flagrant action as an evident or decisive act that impedes another competitor. Finally, the rules committees across all three divisions rescinded optional indoor and outdoor team scoring proposals, delaying any potential implementation for at least another academic year. Hunter is facing a $14M budget deficit with its $399M budget per the New York Post’s Carl Campanile. In a statement about the deficit, a spokesperson: “Hunter College is implementing financial savings measures to address its projected structural deficit while ensuring our ability to provide a high-quality education for our students is not impacted. Full-time faculty and staff and academic programs are not expected to be affected. We may also draw on reserves if necessary to cover any remaining deficit at the end of the academic year. These decisions are being made with an aim toward minimal operational disruption.” (link)
