#7: The NCAA has been issued a showcause order to be held in contempt of court as a result of the SEC's alleged violations of a TRO in Louisiana that enjoined NCAA transfer rules for class of 2022 student-athletes and thus “acting in concert and/or participation with the NCAA.” (link)
#6: The annual NFHS High School Athletics Participation Survey indicated that 8,415,684 participants were involved in high school sports in 2025-26, good for a YoY increase of 149,440. The total includes 4,761,095 boys and 3,654,589 girls, both record highs. NFHS also reports the spike in the number of girls participating in flag football and wrestling since the pandemic continues. In the first post-pandemic survey in 2021-22, there were 15,716 girls participating in flag football nationally. That number has now ballooned to 102,360. Furthermore, participation in girls flag football increased 48.7% last year as the sport cracked the Top 10 list for most popular girls sports. The number of schools reporting girls flag football participation increased from 2,736 to 3,990 in the past year, and a total of 37 states will be either sanctioning the sport or conducting independent/pilot programs by next year. Meanwhile, participation in girls wrestling increased 19.9% YoY from 74,064 to 88,771. The number of schools sponsoring the sport for girls now totals 8,853. Golf had the largest percentage increase among boys sports with an 8.3% uptick to 175,757 participants, while outdoor track and field was up about 4,000 participants, and tennis and soccer each gained about 3,000 participants. #5: Emporia State closes the east side stands at Welch Stadium, effective immediately. AD Steve Rodecap: “During a continuing evaluation of our athletic facilities, we identified some structural deficiencies on the east side of Welch Stadium that, for the safety of our fans, could no longer be delayed.” The Hornets will add portable seating for 700 and a VIP tent for up to 75 as capacity will decrease to 4,419, below the five-season per-game average of 4,533. #4: Bluefield State's Board of Governors reversed its decision this summer to extend President Darrin Martin’s contract, thus “ending his employment with the university.” This comes as the board did not get notified of “potentially serious violations of NCAA rules,” the university being “significantly behind” on paying at least $1.5M, an inability to get reliable evidence about outstanding debts or institutional finances and more. Board Chair Charlie Cole: “The Board’s immediate priorities are to stabilize the University’s financial position and protect the future of the institution for its students, staff, faculty, and community. We are taking swift steps to strengthen financial oversight and meet the University’s obligations responsibly.” (link)
#3: Columbus State becomes the second DII department with a jersey patch partner, with YMCA of Metropolitan Columbus to sponsor the Cougars’ men’s basketball jerseys. AD Justin Hay: “We are incredibly excited to partner with the YMCA of Metropolitan Columbus in a way that represents much more than a logo. Asked about her goals leading the RMAC: “I think we just have a great balance from top to bottom. So we have 15 schools, so there are more members versus the other two conferences that I've been in, but what I'm looking to do is I'm looking for one of our institutions to get that Learfield [Directors’] Cup.
