UC Merced AD David Dunham sat down with College.town’s Anthony Grassi at the 2026 NACDA Convention to dive into building the Bobcats’ department, the transition to DII and much more. Here are some of his key takeaways…
➤ When UC Merced embarked on starting athletics, the university worked with two consultants, former NCAA President Cedric Dempsey and former Stanford/Dartmouth/Pacific AD Ted Leland. That work produced 15 recommendations that the Bobcats have guided the Bobcats’ build. “We have followed those almost to a T. I mean, 15 years ago, one of the recommendations was that we should be in Division II and be a member of the CCAA. … Clearly, the budget modeling and budget projections did not hold, as athletics has changed and morphed in higher education and our economy has changed, but we had a plan and we have stuck to it. So as we're finishing this year of our expedited provisional membership process Division II, we will have checked off all the boxes of all the recommendations from that report.”
➤ As part of the first group of members to go through the two-year expedited provisional membership process, Dunham described it as "drinking out of a fire hose while you're holding another fire hose to put out the fires. The biggest challenge was the unknowns of squeezing three years of transition into two for both the department and NCAA staff who were very collaborative throughout the process. “I would say to folks that are thinking about going through this process, it is a lot of work, but it's very rewarding because one of the reasons we decided to do it is you only have one year without post-season access, which is really critical. But at the same time, it also, I think, forces your hand to really take care of the business at hand of making sure that you are going to comply with everything and that you have structures in place to do that.” (link)
DII will collaborate with the National Council for Mental Wellbeing to support the division-funded Mental Health First Aid training that will be available to DII members. (link)
Republican leaders have announced that the final two weeks of the pre-mid-term election House session have been cancelled, with members set to depart Washington no later than September 17 and not return until mid-November. Per Politico’s Meredith Lee Hill, Mia McCarthy and Riley Rogerson, the move will severely curtail what had been a full September legislative calendar. “Leaders would recall House members for those canceled weeks if the Senate moves forward with a party-line budget reconciliation package in the meantime, GOP leaders indicated, though that is not anticipated. The decision comes as candidates agitate to get back on the campaign trail and as GOP leaders continue to struggle to maintain control of the House floor.” (link)
Lincoln Memorial will bring athletic training, strength and conditioning and mental health counseling under one umbrella: LMU Athletics Performance. Assoc. AD for Sports Performance and Wellness Don Grigsby: “Bringing these areas together under one umbrella just makes sense. We have several new faces joining our staff, and we want to create an environment where everyone feels supported and communication is constant. When you have the health, performance and well-being of our student-athletes in your hands, communication has to be one of our highest priorities.” (link)

The average diesel price in the U.S. reached an all-time high of $5.85 per gallon on Friday, driven by Middle East supply disruptions and the ongoing conflict with Iran that has bottlenecked shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and pushed Brent crude above $95 a barrel. Per the AP’s Wyatte Grantham-Philips, the record fuel cost is rippling across the economy by raising freight and transportation expenses for everyday consumer goods, with shipping surcharges already added by companies such as Amazon, FedEx, UPS and the USPS, and grocery aisle prices rising for perishable foods, produce and meat. Diesel is now up close to 56% from its pre-war price of $3.76. Michigan State Professor David Ortega: "Early on, much of the cost increase gets absorbed along the supply chain through existing freight contracts and retailer margins. But as contracts reprice and fuel surcharges take hold, more of that cost makes its way to the grocery store." For those that don’t drive a diesel vehicle, AAA reports the national gas price average has surged to $4.14 per gallon, surpassing the previous holiday record of $3.82 established back in 2012.
